Stay away! Completely incompetent and dishonest. They installed an oil filter incorrectly in my Jeep and it leaked oil and caused 4000$ of damage The Jeep dealer documented and photographed the issue and gave us the parts to show them. I filed a claim and spoke to another incompetent individual by the name of Maxine Clarke. After 2 months and several phone calls she informed me they were not accepting liability and when I asked her on what basis she had no response. I then asked her for name of the store manager she handled the claim with and she didn't know who she spoke to. Her response was "I don't know, they change all the time". I said no that I was just not late and I would be waiting for the service. He told me they have a full shop today and it would be 1.5-2 hours. I was in for an oil change and tire rotation. I waited longer than i would have expected but not awful - at least an hour. They said I didn't need a tire rotation and didn't deduct from price but expect its just included in the full synthetic price. I think i did need a tire rotation but that is another question. Offered engine protection but i said no, no real pressure. I may or may not go back.. but probably try somewhere that is faster. read more

Went in for normal maintenance. Dif fluid at 100k miles and transfer case fluid change. A few weeks later I hear a grinding noise coming from the rear dif and it cost me $6,000 to fix at a shop that does that kinda work. I am normally on schedule with car maintenance. But when my oil light started flickering, I realized that I hadn't remembered the last change. I have a maintenance check in 2 weeks at my dealership. I made an appointment at this location for this morning. Topped off my tank, reassured me and sent me on my way, without charging me. I also appreciated being talked to and not talked at. This place is all about price gouging. I took my car in for a front brake replacement, in which I was already quoted for a full brake replacement and stabilizer repair from a different business. They quoted me a price ($870) that was for ONLY a front brake replacement , which my previous quote was about $1100 with both brakes being replace along with other repairs. Darien Pep Boys any other details of your experience; Horrible service. 1st I booked online for an available time slot 5:30pm; I received a text stating they can't do that time cause it's too late. Why? So I had to leave work early to get there by 3pm. Once arrived & checking in he tells me I don't have the type of oil your car take so it's gonna cost $69.99 ($70) & I can give you a $20 off coupon. Why wouldn't you tell me that before I came all the way here? He tells me I didn't have time I'm the only one here today; that's not my fault sir. Then he says I haven't had conventional oil in weeks. Sir please tell me how that's my fault? I got the oil change because at this point I had no choice. I'm going out of town for my birthday so I'm trying to get everything in order. As I'm standing there I'm trying to show him how to work my alarm & he's mad & not paying attention; then takes keys to car & couldn't get them to work so he had to come ask me how do I work your car? I called and secured a 9am apt with a service rep. The rep stated there would be a 45 minute wait time so I could wait for my vehicle. I arrived at 9am and was told by the cashier there were multiple people ahead of me and it would be a 4 to 5 hour wait (even tho I had an appointment secured). Run don't walk away from this place! They lie, cheat and rip you off! If you do go there and they offer free inspections of any kind DO NOT let them do it! They use these "free inspections" to then "find" these mysterious things wrong with your car that do not really exist. Could not do the oil change because they could not get the cap off and then they do $705.62 worth of work that was not authorized. To top it off, the car is not driveable even tho it was driven to their shop. Still fighting with them on this and they are not being cooperative so we will see what the lawyers get done. read more

Service is #1! So I used to be a Pep Boys advocate but moved to the suburbs a few years ago and was now closer/easier to go to the dealer for service - and I thought I could trust them more here. Nope. Pep Boys looked at my brakes (which the dealer warned me were dangerously low) and told me I was fine. They took me out to show me in person. I was shocked because the dealership service (Toyota) flat out lied. Anyway, they advised me what to be on the look out for and sent me on my way with a $0 bill. I won't go anywhere ever again. I ordered a set of four tires online and selected this Pep Boys outlet as my installation site, making an appointment in the process. This was quite easy. When I arrived, there was one car ahead of me in the queue, and I was advised that it would take about 1:20 for the tires to be installed. This seemed a little long, but to be fair, I did arrive maybe 10 minutes early for my appointment. The young man who seemed to be running point was friendly and efficient. The work bay was open to view to the waiting area, and I could see them removing the old tires and installing the new ones. Reduction in shenanigan potential for sure. The tires they installed have performed well, and were perfectly balanced. Good job Pep Boys. read more

I went to this location on Sunday for engine oil change. After 2 days notice half quart oil was already gone, took it back to PepBoys to investigate and they gave me estimate of around $1600 for oil leakage on gasket and cover which include more than $1200 just for labor work and $200 charges for other.. I mention the guy no leaks was identified when changing oil and how it possible in just two days. Anyways took to two other auto shops and they showed me no leak from gasket or cover, while oil filter which Pep boys installed was leaking. Wow what a RIP off. They installed bad filter and instead of changing it they want more money for leaks never exist. Brought my car in for an oil change and to get my tires looked at. The person in charge (I'm guessing the manager) took a 2 second look at my tires and stated I needed 4 all new tires which is fine they are experts. However she quoted me over $800 for an oil change and all 4 tires. There are advertisements all over for buy 3 get 1 free when it comes to tires so I'm unsure why my bill would be so high. The manager wouldn't explain anything to me, discuss tire options, educate me on why the price is so high, etc. She basically stated "you need 4 tires, that will be $800". Every other mechanic I have seen in the past will explain what's needed and why the price on it. All of this while having a not so great attitude and making me feel like I was a bother. I'm a rewards member here (I'm aware that really means nothing), but I am very unsure about coming back to Pep boys after this experience. All of this happened while the store was virtually EMPTY! Good customer service goes a long way and this Pep Boys just didn't have it. Update- I did not buy tires from here, but I did request all the documentation on pricing and tire types just in case they did have the best deal and I would come back to Pep Boys. I asked for this information twice before I left. The manager gave me a 3 page receipt with no information about tire prices or options. Therefore, I am 100% not buying their tires. If you don't want to give me the necessary information for me to spend my money at your establishment you don't get my business. read more

On a Friday afternoon I went to have my blinker light bulb replaced. I had an appointment, but was running late, so I knew that was probably going to cost me extra wait time. There was only 1 other customer in the store, so I thought it wouldn't be that long, but then looked and saw that all the service bays were occupied. The owner told me it would be about 90 minutes, so I took a seat. Nearly 2 hours later my car still hadn't been brought in, but the mechanics were all working hard. As we closed on the 2 hour mark a mechanic came to get my keys, and did the job in about 10 minutes. The manager refused to charge me for the service since I had waited so long. To me, that really meant a lot. Every business will have its bad days, but how a customer is treated in those times makes a lot of difference. I will give this place another chance because I appreciate that the manager, Eduardo, did the right thing, and I was really not expecting to be given free service. read more

If I could give no stars I would. My husband and I both scheduled noon appointments for tires which showed available. That way I would not have to sit by myself. They told us it should take an hour for the appointment. Instead, they worked on each car separately and we ended up leaving after 2.5 hrs with the one car that was done and had to come back for the other one. Their waiting room had such a strong odor of rubber ( I get it they do tires but this was nauseating) that my husband and I had to walk to a nearby restaurant where we had to try to kill time because the change was taking so long. read more

I've gone to this shop 3-4 times now and each time they've amazed me each time. The first time was for breaks, they came in underestimate and on time. The following visit my oil cooler on my Volkswagen broke. I asked would it be alright if I sourced the part and had them do the labor, again no problem what so ever. This last visit I needed a front drive axle replacement. Again I sourced the axle, however since it was a VW they didn't have the correct tool to replace the axle. They accommodated me beyond my expectations. I had no problem that they didn't have the part since I know VW has special tool sets. They went out of their way to order the part and they gave me a discount on the service because of the wait time for the tools to come in. They are honest, forthright, and genuine. They tell it like it is without being rude or condescending or belittling. I commonly say that I know enough about cars to be dangerous if you will. They'll respect your knowledge (or lack there of), give you an honest and fair assessment of what's needed, and they'll bust their asses to make it right in a timely manner, no matter the situations. For some reason if they're incapable of doing the repair, they'll say so and never give you the run around. FINALLY and honest shop with great staff. This is definitely a gem in Darien and worth the trip if you're not local, and I only work out in Burr Ridge, which is how I found them to start with. There's a reason why I say they're the only shop I'll go to, and I HIGHLY recommend them to anyone who needs work done. My sincerest thanks to Tim (Store Mgr) and Rudy (Mechanic who does all the work on my car, and the only person I'll let touch it. Bravo Boys. Keep up the good work. read more

Went in for a quick headlight bulb change. When I went to pay, the service rep told me that they did a complimentary brake check (which I didn't ask for, nor have time for) and said my car had less than 30% left on the rear brake pads. When I told him that I recently had my car serviced by my mechanic (who I've gone to for years and is very reputable), I still had plenty of time left before they needed replacement. The rep laughed and said, "When are you going to change them, when they're metal on metal?" When I went home and checked my mechanic's records, I had 60% left the last time they were checked, less than 1,000 miles ago. Not sure how the service quality is here, but I feel this is a blatant example of them trying to take advantage of me. I will not be returning to Pep Boys in Darien. read more

Went in for belt squeak, brake pedal issue, balance. First the good...they fixed squeak w new serpentine belt and were fairly courteous. Now the bad.. I needed new rear brakes and rotors. They couldn't get the right rotors so they said they would refinish existing. Ok...I have a special car and it's understandable ...Result... CHARGED me for resurfacing when ALL THEY DID WAS slap on new brake pads...and charged me for brake fluid line clearance but neglected to tell me about a cracked brake fluid cap. I ended up with a loud clicking sound from a dirty brake line which wasn't there before on my front brakes. When I returned a day later to ask them to look at the sound (which was obviously coming from brakes) they wanted to tear into my firewall and claimed the clicking was from a loose socket head attached to my engine. Nope! Poor diagnostics. DON'T GO TO THIS LOCATION. THEY LIE AND CHARGE FOR WORK NOT DONE! I ended up going to Lombard PepBoyslocation where I was well taken care of and a brake line cleaning got rid of the sound. Moral. Not all PEPBOYs are bad... just this one. read more

Poor service went in for a simple tire repair tried to tell me they couldn't fix it until I had a complete brake job. Funny I just had new brakepads placed on. Luckily the manager stepped in and told them just to fix the tire. I left with a estimate of over $1000. Wow how a $12 tire plug could have made them so much money. Had a flat tire that needed repair. I was told I damaged the tire. Quite possibly, but the tire I needed they no longer carry. I was told it would be 2 days since they needed to order a tire. Pep boys no longer carries Cooper S4 tires. I asked if they could give me a comparable tire since I wouldn't be able to ride on a donut for 2 days. I was told no. I asked to speak to the manager and he suggested I drive on the donut for 2 days but could not help with my request for a comparable tire. It turns out the tire was 5 minutes from my home address. I drove to that Pep Boys and only waited 2 hours for it to be replaced. I was also charged for another installation package and pro rated tire. Which is fine, except this is the 2nd defective Cooper tire and 4th flat in a year. read more

Last week my front brakes went out while I was driving to work on I-355, and ironically, I had purchased brand new breaks late summer. My car was towed and brought it to Pep Boys that morning, and my car was fixed by the end of the day. The services that Pep Boys provides are outstanding. Andrew in the front is very professional, accommodating, knowledgeable, and kind. He went above and beyond and kept my family, and I updated throughout the day. He also took pictures of the damages and thoroughly explained what had happened so that I would have evidence to show the person who had previously worked on my car. Since I am new to the area, I am thankful that I have found a place that serves their customers with the utmost care and respect. Did an oil change at my home and was getting a weird drip after lowering the car. After double checking for leaks I was still unable to diagnose the issue. Took it to this location 10 minutes before closing and Nate was kind enough to put it up on a lift and double check all of my connections. Just got scammed out $50. Pep boys advertised a $50 bonus on 4 Cooper Tires. The store employee game me the rebate form and said I could either mail it in or do it on line. I tried to submit it on line first. The web site said the offer didn't exist. I then called their customer service and was told the same thing. They said the particular Cooper tire I bought didn't qualify. Apparently the store employees were not aware of this as they thought it would apply and gave me the submission form. I don't fault the employees as it is on the surface a deceptive promotion and Ad. The average person would not suspect the fine print excluding this particular Cooper tire. Beware of their promotions. They are designed to not pay. They are essentially a scam. read more

Extremely pleased with the service I received. It's Fourth of July and most places are closed. I had an emergency and needed my car fixed ASAP! They towed it and took care of it in a very nice timely manner, they knew I had to get to work so they got to it quickly! Back in December, 2017,I highly recommended this location. Now, as of April, 2018, I would not recommend this location. I purchased an alignment package. The package does not come with a tire rotation, but a tire rotation is a free service as stated per their website. The manager refused to rotate my tires, and instead tried selling me an oil change in order to rotate my tires. He was also very rude and unprofessional. Crooks and liars... I brought my Rav in there for a transmission flush. They did the job and took over an hour after the emailed me that my car was ready to get picked up. But when I picked up my car the check engine light was on and the traction light was on. I spoke with the assistant manager Andrew and he said that both the lights we on which they weren't when they got the car. He then proceeded to call me a liar and said that I wanted it to be fixed for free after spending $216 on a transmission fluid flush. We spoke with the manager and the district manager and the best they can do is offer us to fix the check engine light for $200. I will never use pep boys ever again. Shady shady shady!
