I'll be the first to say that going to places like Pep Boys can be a gamble. However, I think I found an honest and proficient group at the West Patrick Street location. Scroll down to the last paragraph if you want to get to the "punchline" quickly. Let me take you back to Memorial Day weekend 2016. My SIL and her 3 kids came into town with their mini van. Given that my family doesn't have a van or comparable sized vehicle I ended up driving all of us around. I immediately noticed that the brakes had the worst warp and pulsation I ever felt in my life. No way would I let them take a 8 hour drive back home in this condition. So being a good BIL, I went to Pep Boys and purchased some parts. Long story short, replacing the rotors and brakes were a pain. [Cliffnotes: It took MUCH longer than anticipated, and screw you Dodge and your different "duty" brakes for the same model and using the retention clips from hell.] After I installed the rotors, I took the car for a drive and the rear brake was smoking! I had the vehicle towed to Pep Boys on Memorial Day Monday. I fully expected to have to pay mucho dinero and have to house my SIL for extra days. HERE'S THE PART YOU SHOULD READ: I forgot to clean off the anti-rust treatment off the new rotors when I installed them. The Pep Boys guys cleaned up the rotors and charged me $0.00!!! We ended up at Pep Boys after a breakdown on the interstate. The tow truck brought us to the parking lot, where we went in to get what we needed. The parts counter seemed to have no clue of what was going on, and couldn't help us with what we needed. I went in for gold or yellow antifreeze, and they sold me green because they didn't know the difference. On the other hand, one of the mechanics was very helpful. He came out to our vehicle in the parking lot as we were putting the antifreeze in to make sure everything was going ok. He may have even been on a break, but walked out to help anyway. I have come here on serveral occaisions and ony one time I had a painful experience (specific to a certain employee). The other times, as long as you are calm and understanding with the staff, they are the same to you. This is one of the top places to purchase car parts and they give military discounts!! read more

This review applies specifically to a particular visit (afternoon of 11/21/15), but my overall experience with this Pep Boys has been pretty much right in line with today's experience. I'd initially stopped at the AutoZone next door to this Pep Boys, mainly because the AutoZone parking lot is a little easier to get into from my neighborhood due to their respective locations on a major retail road (in addition, it's a divided road). I was told by the AutoZone service rep that the part I needed was a dealer-only part, and that I probably wouldn't find it at any auto parts store. Being the never-say-never kind of guy I am, I stopped in at home to look online and see if that might be untrue. Sure enough, Pep Boys had the part I needed on their website, so maybe they had it in stock. I went back down the road, this time bypassing AutoZone and heading to the Pep Boys next door. I came in to the shop because my tire had gone completely flat over the course of the day and I wasn't sure whether or not I was going to have to buy a new tire or if the one I currently had could be repaired. I feel like a lot of shops would have tried to rip me off and tell me I needed to buy a new tire, but this shop repaired my tire (it was my valve seal) and had me on the road in about 30 minutes! I've seen a lot of negative reviews about this location, but I have nothing but great things to say. Deryck (I hope I spelled your name right), the service manager, took care of me right away, even though I was 30 minutes late for my appointment. It was only 20 minutes before they pulled my car in the bay. The young man working on my car took his time ensuring he lined my vehicle up right before lifting it. He also took his time doing a VERY through inspection of both my front and rear brakes (even though I only needed my front brake pads replaced). Ended up being that I needed new rotors, pads and sensor. I went in expecting to pay between $600-$700...parts, labor AND a military discount I walked away paying less than $500!!! Incredible. For those complaining about wait times...come prepared next time. They have free Wi-Fi so I brought my laptop and charger with me and did some online assignments while I waited. There are plenty of shops and restaurants around too so you don't HAVE to wait there (that's why they ask for your phone number). Excellent job guys!! DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE! THEY ARE THIEVES AND LIARS! ANYWHERE BUT HERE!! BE CAREFUL!! On Wednesday Dec. 7th my mom came in with an appointment for 9am, she was only seen at 10am because there was no mechanic. The mechanic was supposed to align the vehicle and they didn't because it came back exactly how it was before. She paid for a service that wasn't done and paid extra to have an unlimited warranty on it. They robbed $160 for a service that was never done and lost half a day of work. She came in on Friday Dec. 9 so that they could order a new tire for her car with the reference and they said it would arrive that Saturday so we could come in on Sunday to put the new tire. No one called so she called on Saturday to know if the tire had come in. Update: Tire only arrived today. Today she took off work AGAIN so that she could finally get her new tire, they guaranteed that at 8am the mechanic would be there, when she got there, "mechanic only comes in at 10, we can call you a lyft though". She patiently wanted for their call until 5. At 5 since no one had the decency to call, We called they said that since her car is a 4-wheel drive that they would have to order 3 more new tires?!?! I told them no that I was coming in to get the car. When we got there, the car was in the exact place that she had left it, outside untouched. I went inside a blond lady was behind the desk, I asked to speak to a manager and she said no manager was in today, I asked so can I speak to someone responsible? She was completely rude and laughed in my face. I asked her what was funny and she turned her back and left to go outside. I waited, she came in and took a person who had arrived after me, completely ignoring my existence and after those clients paid, asked didn't I give you your keys? I said I would be back tomorrow to speak to the manager. I'm giving 1 star because it doesn't let me post with zero stars. read more

This Pep boys are the best in the business. I was from out of town and in need of a tire, which was a very urgent favor to ask considering they were almost closed. But they took care of me after bending over backwards and stay after hours to get the tire I needed so I could get back on the road. I've made 4 appointments with these people and all 4 times they've said there are cars in front of mine even though I made an APPOINTMENT to make sure it was done in a timely manner. This time we finally got my car in around 2:30 pm. We came back around 4:30 and nothing was done. I only needed new tires and an oil change. They are pure lazy and the costumer service is HORRIBLE and they absolutely don't care. I do not recommend this place to absolutely anyone not even someone I absolutely loathe. read more

Had an appointment at 4:30pm for a tire balance. Was told that the shop was "short on staff, and that it would take an hour to an hour and a half to finish." I'm not an unreasonable person, so I told the employee helping me that I understood. No big deal. 2 hours later I see that my car has not moved, so I go to who I assume is the manager, and ask for my keys back. I'm told "They were just about to pull it in." I watched two of the four employees "working" there chatting with a guy in an SUV that had pulled up for 20 minutes before giving up and asking for my keys back. Do yourselves a big favor and never bring your vehicles here. Save yourselves the time. If my experience is a reflection of how the shop is managed and the employee reliability, then you're more likely to have the employees break your vehicle than fix it. Came in to get a slow leak repaired in a tire with my baby. I was told it would be 20 minutes since it just required a plug. So I carried my son around for 90 minutes and was told the tire wasn't leaking (it was, it's been losing 10 psi/day). They didn't apologize and didn't explain. Customers were treated with disdain, workers were constantly sighing and complaining, and my baby was tired and starving by the time we left. Worst shop on every level I've been to; you really, really should avoid it. read more

I was just in this store to get a headlight for my car. The staff was super helpful and friendly. Once I get my bulb and had help installing it, it turned out I needed a second one. Turned out they didnt have the same one, so they allowed me to replace the one I bought with a double pack, helped me change them both and gave me all the info to get a rebate as well. On the 4th of June, I went in to get my tires balanced at 1 pm a very simple service, The client before I was arguing with Shanon the service dept. asst. manager because she had an appointment for 10 am and they told her to return at 1 pm and now they wore telling her car would not be ready until 2:30 pm. This should have been a sign to me about what I should have expected but I left my car anyway. The asst. manager told me there wore 2 cars ahead of me and that it should be ready at 2:30 pm. I called at 5 pm and the manager Nick told me the car should be the next one in for the service, at 6:30 I call again and Shanon the asst. manager tells me that the mechanic had an emergency and left. I can understand they are understaffed but you need to be upfront with the clients, call them and tell the truth so they can make the appropriate choices to leave the car or take it somewhere else but what really upset me was that after I told them I was going to give them a negative review Shanon asst. manager laughed at me and said no problem this client will make a good review to counteract your bad review. This is the biggest shit show I have ever seen. I made an online appointment for Monday and when I arrived on time, they told me that there were 4 cars in front of me and that it was going to be a very long wait. Well I couldn't wait that long bc I had to get back to work so they rescheduled for Friday. We show up Friday again, on time and when we get there they say that they do not have the tires that we ordered in stock and couldn't even give us anything comparable so we didn't have to make a 3rd trip up there for their mistakes. So they tell us that they can have the tires that we originally ordered in the first place next Tuesday. The tires didn't come in until Wednesday and when we showed up on Wednesday they said it would be a 2 hour wait for a tire change and they did an oil change since they screwed up so much. Well I dropped my car off at 2:30 and 5pm rolled around and they still had not called so I went back to check the progress and my car had not been touched. I was furious. They said they were short staffed but I saw at least 2 guys standing around talking doing absolutely nothing. When I went inside and went off they jumped on my car immediately and it was finished in 30 minutes. A job that took them 3 hours was finished in 30 minutes. They are lazy, inconsiderate, morons and I will never ever go here ever again. I can't even believe these people are still in business. I could've had my dad do this shit in less than an hour if he had the equipment. I hate taking my car to shops anyway but this just ruined that even more. Ordered tires online via their website, set an appointment for installation the next day. Got a confirmation email for my purchase and installation of 4 tires. Showed up 20 minutes early only to find the order had been cancelled without even bothering to notify me. At the store they told me that orders that require a store to store transfer of tires because of a lack of stock results in an automatic cancellation and if JimBob in commercial sales does not notify Bubba at the service desk, the customer is left coming in to have tires installed that are not present. Why even bother having the ability to buy and set appointments online if it only results in utter failure at the store. read more

Bev took the time to do a diagnostic and Steve came off break to review the results. Although they were swamped, they realized we were either stuck overnight or the car needed to be fixed. I went online and found a wiring kit that said it would work for my 2016 truck. Put it in the cart for store pick and when you pick it up, then, you pay for it. Go in and a guy helped me find it, because it wasn't ready even though the email said it was. The manager, Joe, then ASSURED me it would work on my 2016 and that even though it said up to 2014 on the package that it was just due to the packaging. So, mechanic comes to my work next day (who I am paying) and guess what? Doesn't work. Returned it next day and I told him that he told me it would work...he didn't care. Tried to blame me. I saw online that Pep boys had a special "coolant system evaluation", so I took my car there to get a second opinion. I saved hundreds of dollars by having it repaired at Pep Boys. Everyone I talked to in the service department was very friendly and knowledgeable. Carl and Derick explained the problem to me and showed me the part that needed to be replaced. 1st visit I was told repairs would take 1 hour. At 2 hours they told me my vehicle was almost done. At 3 hours I saw my vehicle being pulled in the 1st bay. Clearly they kept lying to me. While waiting. Another guy had been their for over 5 hours because they lied to him the day before. After keeping him in the waiting room all day, they told him they didn't have the correct part and he would have to come back the next day. A few days ago I went in for tires and was told 30 minutes. That ended up being shy of 2 hours. During that time a manger was telling a customer who just left less than a hour before that there was no way all five lugs came off and their tire flew off their vehicle. I waiting yet again, because I had a completely flat tire today after 3 days. I some how think the 30 minutes will be much longer since they just pulled my vehicle in after 90 minutes. The woman waiting next to me had an appointment for a 30 minute oil change. It took 90 minutes. Another customer needed a headlight, it took over 2 hours. On the bright side I actually heard a manager making courtesy follow up phone calls. The downside, it was the same manager that lied to me the 3 times the 1st time. He was also the one claiming a tire wouldn't come off. I filed a complaint with their corporate after the 1st incident, and a month later they called asking if I was satisfied with the resolution. I told them nobody ever called and was told they would reopen the complaint. Never heard back. STAY AWAY! I only come here because it is a fleet vehicle and I get paid to sit and wait. read more

I had to go back and forth with staff, one said i couldn't return it and other said yes i can. It was a mess. Came into the store because my flat tire could not be patched and needed to buy a new one. Spoke to the associate who told me there were two tires that matched my car's needs and explained the difference between the two and his recommendation. Not from around the area and wanting to get home, I took his recommendation. He told me it would be an hour or so before I got back on the road again, no sweat. About 45 minutes later, noticed my car still sitting in the parking lot untouched. I inquired what the hold up was and they stated they couldn't find either of the tires that were mentioned to be in stock. I waited an hour for them to tell me their computer program was off and their stock was not accurate. I don't understand how you can mess that up and given the plethora of other tire options in the area I would highly avoid this place. 1 star was generous for making me wait until all the other stores in the area had closed to tell me I had no choice but to drive an hour on my donut. This is very minor work, but the guys at route 40 Pep Boys were fast, friendly, and didn't try to hose me. My wife and and I went to Pep Boys just to get a quote on tires for a Toyota Highlander. We made our way to the service area where they service tires and found 4 employees and one supervisor at the desk talking. When my wife and I walked in, they all scattered and no one even acknowledged our presence. The manager/supervisor was at the desk on the computer and I thought, surely he would at least acknowledged us...he didn't. He raised his head once from the computer...saw us standing there and resumed whatever he was doing. My wife and I were appalled by the blatant rude attitude of the staff. There was NO customer service, no greeting from any of the staff and a supervisor/manager who couldn't stop what he was doing to say, "I'll be with you in a minute." Needless to say we will NOT be purchasing tires from this location or ANY Pep Boys establishment. My wife was disappointed because she has had dealings with Pep Boys in NYC and had good things to say. If this is indicative of the service you get from Pep Boys, then they don't deserve anyone to spend there money there. read more

Yes I've stated in another review that I would choose this place over any other place because of the pricing here but the service is horrible. I called in for an appointment once and I came in and they didn't even touch the car for an hour. They don't put any effort to rush the service for the customer because they don't care. They get paid flat rate for the job they do. They will try to spend the whole time working on that job just to get the money. I one time broke down and needed an over the phone consultant, the guy I think his name was Eric told me that he couldn't help me even though I explained to him the exact area of the problem and even though the stay open till or past 7 they still avoid to do jobs. It was 5:30 and the guy Eric told me that they won't work on it today and might work on it tomorrow if they aren't to busy. I've come in other times to get work done and they tell me they don't have enough mechanics to do my job, it's a one person job to balance tires. Why be called a parts and service center when you barely work on cars when the time works for the average customer. The advisors here don't know anything about cars and just make up crap so you pay for work that doesn't need to be done. read more

They were honest with their estimate, and came in under it when they were done. It's as smooth and quiet as the first day it was driven off the lot. Sent my daughter to pep boys to get 2 tires installed. It took 4 hours. Why? Because the employees spent more time out back talking and smoking than actually working. And to top it off they all left their posts and helped a lady with a big item, that she bought at SEARS, to rearrange it so it would fit in her vehicle to be able to close the hatch! Really? That was Sears' job not pep boys. Management needs to retrain the employees to abide by the "fast service" that is listed on their website and to get the job done in a timely manner. These people are the biggest crooks. This was the second time I went there. The first time I went in for a 29 minute oil change and a tire rotation, they told me would take an hour it was more like 3 - 4 hours an quoted me a different price in the phone. Next u went in for a dead battery so they did a test and the battery was fine but thought it was the ignition. So the manager quoted me a price to look at it. Long story short it was a blown fuse and they tried to change me 90 dollars for. They did cut the price in half but after I argued the point 60 dollars to change a fuse.
