I had a headlamp go out on my 2010 Nissan versa. I went to AutoZone and bought replacement bulbs only to come home to discover that I just could not reach into the compartment well enough to change it myself no matter how hard I tried. I decided to go to Pep Boys. I called first and they told me they couldn't use the bulbs I bought at AutoZone. I thought I could just then return the bulbs to AutoZone so I said fine. When I got there, they didn't have the right bulbs and so they did agree to use the bulbs I bought at AutoZone. The gal behind the counter gave me some weird story about how they could charge me for an engine diagnostic and it would end up cheaper than charging for installing the two headlamps. I admit it was stupid of me to agree to this, but the cost ended up being $110. $110 to change two headlamp bulbs? So, with the price of $40 for the two headlamps I ended up paying $150 to have two headlamps replaced. Again, my bad for agreeing to it, but I was kind of stuck. I should've gone elsewhere. I now see why they have such a bad overall rating of just two stars. Much better places around so stay away from Pep Boys. read more

I made an appointment for an oil change and was there right when they opened. There was only one tech on site when I arrived, so my truck sat for a half hour before they got started. Two hours later I was told they're finishing up. I waited another half an hour and they FINALLY pulled my truck out. Two and a half hours for an oil change?? That's a half hour service tops.. I brought my car in Friday evening at 5:30pm on February 3, 2023. My tire had a slow leak. I was told I would be called when they were finished. 8:00pm rolls around and still no word and no phone call to let me know that they were going to have my car overnight. I never agreed to that. I was under the impression they would call me in an hour or two. Get a call the next day saying I needed new tires. No apologies. Communication is key. If you're going to keep my car I need to know. Had my truck in 11/15/22 for a coolant leak and oil change with tire rotation and multi point inspection at the Pep Boys in New Lenox, IL. Coolant appears to be ok for now. Tires were not rotated - I had overfilled my front right on purpose the day before and when I picked it up, it was not rotated or even brought down to acceptable air pressure levels. They said they did not rotate due to wear, which is the reason to rotate. They also could not explain how they did a proper brake inspection without removing the tires. Tires had no cleaned areas/fingerprints, etc. indicating they were removed. So, they could not even check for proper inflation, at a tire place BE CAREFUL if you take it there. I wish I could rate them higher, but certain items needed extra attention. When I went to pick up my car the checkout process was nice and easy. When opened my front door there was grease all over it (not the first time this has happened here). Checkout rep came and cleaned it all off (blamed it on new employee). Even said if not happy, bring the car back and they will get it cleaned. Nice of them. Started car, never reset service oil light. Another trip back into the store for this. Same guy refreshed the light and asked me if there was an oil sticker on the window? Nope. Here we go again. Same guy brought out sticker, but mileage was wrong. At this point I'm frustrated and just want to leave. I don't need the sticker (car tells me when). Wake up this morning to find oil dripped onto my garage floor (even after leaving on street for a while). Make sure to look over your car before you leave the store. Follow up. Still needed to get one of my other cars an oil change. Called to get an appointment for tomorrow and the guy told me to go online and make appointment or just drop it off. I asked if he couldn't take appointments over the phone and he said he was new and best bet was to go online. That's the last straw. I'm done with Pep Boys New Lenox. Don't bother booking an apt online. First attempt was a 6pm apt, but when arriving to the store was told I shouldn't have been able to book that time slot (oil change).Second attempt was a 130 apt (oil change). Upon arriving at store, I was told several hour wait and that I would be put at the end of the line. They treated me just as a walk-in completely defeating the purpose of making an apt. I had called asking if I would be able to walk in or if I needed an appointment, Lydia Sanchez- the manager- told me if that I made it there by 3:15pm I would have my car back by the time they closed(7pm). By 6:45, no one had called me so that's when I decided to call them and Lydia had told me they were keeping it overnight. No one called to inform me of this, leaving me high and dry for work the next day. The next day, Lydia called me in the morning telling me I needed XYZ done and it would be $977 and I had told her I would need to call her back. She then, rudely, asked "Do you need to call your dad?" That's when I politely told her I was working, and I needed to have my mom speak with them. My mom spoke with her on the phone and Lydia told her that if they didn't do "X" it would save us $300, that's when my mother told her to go ahead and do the sensors & we'll save "X" for another day. They called me later on to tell me my car was ready & the total was $977, that's when I handed to phone off to my mother. Lydia then had the technician remove the NEW spark plugs("X") and put the OLD ones back in to bring the price down $300. Never going back there, and I hope Lydia learns to wear a mask during a global pandemic. read more

My 18yo daughter took her car here for a simple oil change. I had her ask them to inspect the brakes (due to a squeaking sound). They called her and told her she shouldn't even be driving the car because the brakes were so bad, and that they could do it same day for $400+. We told them no, we have a mechanic. Took the car to the mechanic who informed us that the brakes had 40-50% life on pads and rotors and that they didn't need to be changed. They also fixed the squeaking sound. Cost me all of $20! In regards to the oil change..... 2 hours later (with an appointment!) we went to get the car where I found out they gave her a full synthetic for $55! Ridiculous and unnecessary. No more Pep Boys for this family!!!!! read more

I had an absolutely terrible experience. I made an appointment for an oil change and the technician was literally in his phone (looked like texting or Facebook) the entire time. This caused him to work very slowly. There were four cars in the shop and only two technicians working. No one was running the front desk because he needed to work on a car. I had my doubts, when Pep Boys moved to New Lenox, as i had used them for my Mom's car and once in Orland park. But Scott B. proved that this Business is not only reputable, but very Fair. I brought my car in (with appt) for an Oil Change the day of the Blizzard ( Sup.Bowl) and not only did he get it done quickly, but he gave me the coupon deal(even though I forgot the coupon$17.99) , AND when I stopped in to ask about headlight that day, they installed it at a VERY low rate, and gave me the headlight bulb at COST!! Thanks to Scott (manager) , I finally found a FAIR and COMPETENT auto repair shop that's local!!!!!!!! I definitely recommend Pep Boys to anyone with immediate Car repair issues!!! This was my first time at this location and needless to say it was my last time. All I needed was a simple oil change and they wouldn't do it because the handle on my dipstick broke off. The guy told me that it they didn't feel comfortable doing it because they wouldn't be sure how much oil was in there/how much they'd put in if they changed it which is understandable. But they made it seem like the dipstick fell into where the oil is and told me that either A. They can try and run it through and get it out but it would be cost me about $4,000 or that I go to the dealership and see what they say. Even though you could clearly see the top of the dipstick of where it broke off. They also told me that I was low on power steering as well as coolant. I asked them if they could at least top me off with the coolant (since it's pretty easy to do) but they wanted charge me $90 for the flush and the new coolant. I have done this before and I know it doesn't take that much effort to do. At least not $90 worth. So I left with no oil change and a broken part. I went home and with a pliers, a small magnet, a screw driver and a screw I was able to get the dipstick out. It only took me about 10 minutes. One of the reasons I went was because they were open on Sunday. Well they're open, but they just won't actually take time to work. It was simply "Oops the dipstick is handle is broken. Can't do the job. Oh Well, it's just an oil change anyway." This problem could have been fixed easily if they just looked a little further and just didn't give up on it at the drop of a hat. We took our van in for an oil change, but knew there was some other maintenance needed. Turns out it we needed over $1,000 of work (back breaks, alignment, front tires, etc) Ed was fantastic. He clearly broke down the work that was needed, parts & labor costs & how we could prioritize. He helped us find discount & was a true professional from beginning to end. I took my car to this Pep Boys twice in the last year or so. Once to replace a bad starter, once to replace brake calipers. Within 6 months the calipers had significant failures leaving a puddle of brake fluid on my driveway. Within a year, the starter failed. To Pep Boys credit, they did warranty the brake calipers. That said, I refuse to pay a couple hundred dollars for labor every time the junk parts Pep Boys gives me fail. I've taken my business elsewhere to get my starter replaced and won't be going here again. read more

After sitting there for over an hour..again with a two year old they told me my car needed $1500 worth of work, but was fine to drive. I really regret going to Pep Boys for a simple oil change. First I looked for a coupon online and found one from Pep Boys for $19.99. I got home went to the website and scheduled the appointment. When scheduling the appointment I selected my vehicle, the engine type and the type of oil change that I wanted. "Formula Shell or BP Visco Conventional Motor Oil Change Service". I arrived at Pep Boys promptly at 3:00pm, they took my keys and I walked over to Walmart to buy Thanksgiving supplies. Walked back 30 minutes later and my car still had not been touched. So, I waited. After 30 more minutes they pulled my car around and then I waited about another 10 minutes for the guy on the phone that was working with a customer. (truth is I didn't care all that much about the waiting, I had a pretty light day). Here's what really bothered me, when I went to check out I presented my $19.99 coupon and basically got laughed at. The guy said 'Oh no, that is not gonna work, we did a synthetic oil change, that is what your car takes." While I was not happy and argued a little, the only saving grace is that the coupon had a $39.99 synthetic service on the other side of the coupon. After succumbing to the pressure I said, I guess I'll pay the $39.99. Again the checkout guy laughed and said we'll see. Once he got done pushing all the register buttons he told be my charge was $89.99!! $89.99 for an oil change!! Unfortunately we had a much more heated discussion after this round. After a few minutes of back and forth and a lot of button pushing, he magically got the price down to $29.99. Still $10 more than the damn coupon, though in the interest of finally getting out of there I accepted it and paid. Funny, the salesman's parting comment was "Well next time you are going to have to pay full price", LOL Next Time??? Wish it ended there, but it doesn't. Of course, my entire ride home I smelled burning oil. My garage smelled like burning oil, and when I moved the car (2014 Buick Enclave) out of the garage on Thanksgiving, there was oil all over the garage floor!. I went back to this Pep boys to have my alignment fixed it seemed to be pulling. I called on Sunday afternoon and the gentleman that answered the phone said that he was overbooked for today but could get me in tomorrow. I booked the appointment for 3 pm, I left work 45 min early so that I could get home pick up my wife's car and get there on time. I arrived at about 2:45, they had a car on the alignment rack and I was told that as soon as they got the car off of the rack they would put my car on. In the mean time 3 people came in for oil changes, the tech that was doing the alignment on the other car stopped what he was doing and did an oil change for a lady that came in after me, finished that and then worked Monday the alignment car for 5 min pulled that car out and left. At that point I had been there 1 hour and 15 min. They finally pulled my car in and looked at it then cam to tell me that my alignment was fine , but they never hooked up any equipment, but stated that I had a bad ball joint which was causing the issue. They quoted me $300 to fix it and would take 11\2 hour. I thought I trusted them but after waiting and being skipped on having my car looked at felt like they were trying to rip me off. I will not return to this or any other pepboys and tell all my friends not to go there I emailed the customer service dept as they recommended, to no avail! they stated that the upper management would call me to resolve the matter that was 2 weeks ago, so I call again a week later and the rep stated that the District manager would call me, well I'm still waiting for that call. In the mean time I had my car checked out by another company and stated that my ball joints were fine that my car was out of alignment. I have to be honest, I have been to the one in Joliet and they are far better to deal with so shop around. The one in New Lenox is poorly managed, over priced, and its sole purpose is to screw the consumer....and they do that very well. I had my son's oil changed at Jiffy Lube in Joliet and have been leaking oil for a few days since. I didn't want to bring the car back there since I didn't trust they would tell me the truth. I stopped at Pep Boys since I've brought my other cats there and Richard jumped right in to take care of me! The oil plug was loose and ready to fall out! Richard tightened it right up and checked the oil to make sure the level was good! I was so appreciative because I had a bad day at work and didn't feel like dealing with this issue. Richard was kind and honest and made sure everything was ok. I LOVE GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! I'm a manager and always take the time to acknowledge those who give good service because it's important! Bought a battery during the artic blast. They were quick and explained different types of batteries that were available. A few months later I had electrical issues in my vehicle and the mechanic found the issue. The manager, Jamie is THE BEST, he explains everything. Great customer service! Took my company van in on Friday because the blower in my heater stopped working said he would look at it on Saturday give me prices and have the parts on the same day and assured me that he'd have it done on Sunday because I needed it for work on Monday which happens to be one of the coldest days on record -15 in the morning which is why I needed my heat fixed.
