Didn't try to charge me for anything else, my tires needed to be special ordered because they're not a usual size, which is fine I already knew that. But they charged less than the dealer or anywhere else in the neighborhood. Some places were trying to quote me upwards of $1,000 (they're not that expensive). WARNING these guys are straight up THIEVES. Quoted me $400 to replace a Toyota Camry crankshaft position sensor. Part costs $50 at auto zone (luckily next door) and to replace requires removing an easily accessible 10mm bolt, pulling out old sensor and sliding in new one. Took less than 5 minutes. $350 for 5 minutes of work puts their hourly rate at 12 x $350 ummm about $4200 an HOUR!!!! THIEVES! BEWARE. Even the crookedest shops in LA are a safer bet. No wonder their garage is always empty. The technician was so ashamed when we came to pick up the vehicle he would not even look us in the face. read more

Took my car in for a breakfluid change, the inside door handle is caked in motor oil and engine grease. Took me an hour to clean, and that was after they were running two hours behind with my appointment. Edit: upon further inspection the motor oil on the door handle literally destroyed the handle, melting the plastic. Will be taking further action to resolve with Pep-Boys. read more

I paid $50 for a diagnostic and when I decided not to move forward with their overpriced services, they wrote in pen on my receipt what issues they claimed to have found but said they don't do official print outs of the issue as if that actually made sense. Additionally, they gave me astronomically higher prices than necessary for the issue they found with my AC. I called my dad and had them speak to him and he explained that the repair shouldn't cost nearly as much for the issue they are stating and then the pep boys employee goes, "oh uhhh, most of the charge is for the labor. It must be a labor-heavy job to do." I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. I'm getting the issue fixed for half that amount at a local auto repair shop. read more

After all the complaints about the North Hollywood Pep Boys and writing to the CEO, the supervisor of the district called, and later the manager, Vee, to whom I'd previously spoken, and he said they were willing to give me the Toyota Upstream Oxygen Sensor original part price of $202. With tax differentiated, I was refunded $353. So, I am grateful that Pep Boys did this (Vee said he would match part prices I find in the future), but he admitted few people contest bills. If so, that is not very intelligent, and I urge you all to pay close attention to unusually high parts prices from Pep Boys in the future. And definitely write to the highest corporate authority as I did (though we shouldn't have to). Pep Boys has a lot more purchasing power than a single customer, and if I could find the same part from AutoZone, which I'm sure marked the part up from Denso, and the Pep Boys price was $450 higher, someone should investigate Pep Boys pricing. PLUS, DUE TO AN EMAIL ADDRESS MISTAKE, MY NAME IS MICHAEL IN WEST HOLLYWOOD, NOT 1301: I have been going to Pep Boys for decades, mostly in Hollywood California. However, that store closed a few years ago and the closest was 7 miles away in North Hollywood. Before last week I had only gone to North Hollywood for oil changes, but a Check Engine Light appeared recently, so I went there, knowing of the $100 diagnostic fee. 2 hours later Sam called with news that I needed a new Upstream Oxygen Sensor and it would cost almost a thousand dollars. The part alone was almost 600 dollars. Sam knew I was planning to sell my almost 23 year old Toyota Corolla in several months, but also suggested other repairs, costing 2000 dollars total. I declined the other service, and was told the Sensor would turn off the Check Engine Light. When I got home, I wondered about the high cost for the Sensor and called the AutoZone parts store across the street from Pep Boys, where Sam sent me to buy Power Steering fluid. I gave them the part number 234-4800 on my Pep Boys receipt and they said it cost $124. Shocked, I asked if there were other parts with the same number? She said no. I called Pep Boys the next day. Sam was off, so I spoke to Edgar and then Vee, the manager, and both explained that Pep Boys only uses original Toyota parts. But I explained AutoZone, which has thousands of stores, said the part number was for one part and confirmed today it was a Denso OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer. Again, same part number on the Pep Boys invoice. How could Pep Boys charge more than $400 higher? Why wasn't I told about the odd Pep Boys policy to only use high cost parts, so that I might shop around and learn of the less expensive option for the same part from AutoZone and find a mechanic who would use such a part? No explanation. Vee did refund $26 for insurance Sam never told me about. Even with a 10% Veterans discount it was still more than $400 higher. I have written to the CEO of Pep Boys in Pennsylvania and if I receive no satisfaction will never go to Pep Boys again and urge you to do likewise. UPDATE: Further investigation took me to the Toyota dealership in Hollywood, inasmuch as the North Hollywood Pep Boys manager Vee said you only use original equipment. This, apart from the fact, as earlier indicated, that the part number 234-4800 listed on the invoice specifically relates to the Denso OEM part sold by AutoZone, which cost $124. However, I decided a trip to the original equipment source Toyota would be in order. At the Toyota parts department, I gave the clerk the part number 234-4800,'but the man said Toyota part numbers have 10 numbers, not 8. Nonetheless, he looked up the Toyota Upstream Oxygen Sensor for a 2003 Toyota Corolla and found my vehicle in the system, as I have occasionally been serviced there. The part number for the Sensor at Toyota is 89465-13030, and it is the part for my car, and Toyota's price is $202.41, $380 less expensive than I was charged at Pep Boys. And a Toyota dealership marks up prices higher than a parts store. But it gets better. On Amazon, the Toyota Sensor OEM with their 10 digit part number sells for $132.68, just a tad higher than AutoZone's price for the 234-4800 part Pep Boys used, as per the receipt I was given. Plus, the Toyota Dealership parts man showed me the picture of their Sensor on his computer and he pointed to engraving on the part saying Denso, just like the part AutoZone was selling for $124. I believe this demonstrates that either the Pep Boys clerk screwed up or Pep Boys has clearly changed its business model, as it was for me over 3 decades very reasonable, with costs much lower than a Toyota dealership. The bottom line is that the store overcharged me over $450 more, based on the part number they provided to identify the Sensor or even using the Toyota part number available on Amazon for a similar price to AutoZone. And it was more than $380 than even the Toyota dealership charged. I'll be contacting Los Angeles consumer reporters at our local broadcast stations about this scandalous rip-off. read more

Came back and car still wasn't even brought into garage yet I asked if they have mechanics that do the oil changes only and they said no it's who ever is available. You would think they would assign 1 mechanic to do oil changes and simple fix's so that a) get more business and b) speed up the process It's sad cause I used to use Pepboys all the time with my other older cars. And that the new scratches underneath the soap they used to put them on were old curb damages - despite the fact that i park my car in a garage and not on the curb. And that the scratches are on the inside between the rim and tire where the soap was heavily used ....He insisted there was no way they could have caused the damage and that also he stood by their presentation at pick up. Spent 1200 for the tires to look bad. Didn't feel like a job well done or a good service response to my concern. Wouldn't recommend going there. They mentioned I had a dirty air filter but I literally changed my air filter right before the appointment. I don't think anyone should go to pep boys to get their car serviced. According to Glassdoor, the employees are paid slightly above minimum wage and make a commission on how many services they complete per hour. This leads to shady business practices and it reflects in all the other reviews too. There's also about 30 or 40 homeless people that live in the parking lot where you leave your car. Pep boys suck bro. My car wasn't starting due to electrical issues. AAA was certain that it was not a battery issue and insisted it was a short or something was draining the battery. I then took it to pep boys and they insisted that it WAS the battery, and assured me that's all I would need. Well, $350 later my car won't f-ing start and I'm at another mechanic fixing the BS that Poop Boys didn't fix. Pep ran an "electrical evaluation" which I'm pretty sure they had Johnny from the back come and hit the engine block with a hammer like a caveman and called it good. Not to mention they didn't install the battery fully, leaving it unscrewed and loose in my hood. Horrible, trash, wouldn't recommend the poop boys to anyone. Easy flat repair, quoted $22, told I needed a new tire. I stated that the screw was in the tread and repairable. They told me something about the tire which wasn't true and I needed a new tire. Also said to go next door to advance auto parts and buy a tire kit and fix myself. I did my own tire repair at Pep Boys on Aug 18, 2023 during a hurricane and just made it home to Canada after 2,500 miles yesterday. Being here at the Pep Boys located in North Hollywood, California, my car has the ability to tell me which tire may have a nail in it or low on air so it indicated one tire to have this problem so I brought it into the Pep Boys here in North Hollywood and I allow them to put it up on their stand to get started. It was only gonna be $22 to pay to have it patched up because they said if the nail is in the middle center of the tire, then it can be patched, but if the nail is off to the edge of the tire, then it would have to be entirely replaced! So, after sitting in the waiting room, they let me know that there's another nail that's close to the portion of the wheel on the outer part which cannot be repaired And I said really show me, and I look at it and it looks like a fresh new nail that the head of it never came in contact with concrete if you understand what I'm saying, a nail fresh out of the box would not have any harsh edges. This nail was a brand new nail into my knowledge look like it was shot into my tire because had it been something I was riding on as the other nail it would've been scraped up by having come in contact with the concrete These guys just looked at me like they knew I knew it was on something, but this is the kind of service that you get from these kind of people. Horrible. I went in with a 10am appointment which was rescheduled, to sit there for 4 hours, because it took them that long to run a diagnostic for my check engine light. Something i learned AFTER that takes less than 5 minutes. They told me my water pump needs to be replaced. $450 for water pump. $375 for labor. I wish I knew that auto zone does it for free and gives you the report. It's so sad to know these guys truly charged me $100 to run the diagnostic knowing i didn't know anything and auto zone was RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THEM. I've been giving pep boys business for my oil changes and other things such as new tires. Over charging for time and part price gauging!!! While the service seems to be complete correctly, this store (and maybe all Pep Boys) gauge you on parts and labor. My part was 3X what it can be bought for at a car parts store. Also, they use a 'book' to calculate labor (which is $169/hour) which did not fit my work completed. If I could give this place negative "stars" I would. I went in on Friday to have my AC checked. I was told it would be $55.00 for a dye test which would enable the mechanic to know which part of my AC system was defective. After being told this would take "several hours" and that I could return later, I opted to wait, instead. Within 45 minutes a man came up to me and said, "We filled your car with freon", it should be okay for a while. However, I hadn't authorized the freon yet so I stayed around to discuss with w/"V" the manager. He immediately contradicted what his service rep had said and told me I needed a condenser instead. I asked if this was revealed by the dye test, he told me he didn't need to do that test; he was the "expert" and "could just tell" that's what my car needed. Then, I was given a lengthy price list of all the services which would entail replacing my condensor. I already had a regular mechanic who'd put freon in my car just two days ago so I knew I was being lied to by these guys right away. However, my own mechanic couldn't get around to fixing my car for two weeks yet I needed AC right away. Since this store was about to close for the evening, it was recommended I return to next day to further discuss what my car actually needed. When I did, that's when I was shocked and appalled because the "scamming" began. There are 3 men running this location and they're never on the same page about what they tell their customers. The manager, "V" told me I needed a condensor, the guy at the counter said, "no you need a compressor", a third employee told me I needed an entire system repair.... Get this... the ENTIRE time I was getting this information - except for when the freon was supposedly added the day before - my car never left their holding bay/parking lot area! That means, they weren't doing any services or evaluations on it. I kept checking and my car was NEVER moved from where I parked it when I first arrived. In addition, their "labor costs" are off the charts. When I confronted them about this, I was told that my interpretation of their costs was correct: They charge their customers "labor" from the moment the car's in their lot; NOT when the car is hoisted up and being repaired". Therefore, they had a "labor bill" of $700.00 as their estimate of what it would cost to "baby sit" my car while it awaited servicing. I told them to forget it. I could buy a condensor myself for 1/3 of the price they quoted me and my original mechanic would install it for around $100, max. I refused to pay them anything for adding this alleged "freon" I didn't need and which had just been added two days prior. As I started to leave, one of the men came running after me and said, "Hey, if you buy the compressor and bring it back here, we'll install it for just $87.50!" That blew my mind.... What happened to the "$700 labor charge" on my work order?! It was when I told these men I'd texted my attorney is when "V" said, "How about I just give you your car and not charge you anything?" I agreed and left. I've never seen such blatant and obvious scamming, swindling and lying by another other company in my life. They are so obvious in their attempts to seperate customers from their money without any regard for how transparent they are when they do this! NOTE; Whoever writes back to all the complaining Yelpers! to apologize and try to correct the problem, do not write to me! Since you've done nothing with these employees despite dozens of yelpers being "consoled" by you, I'm taking further steps to report this to the corporate Pep Boys office in PA tomorrow and the BBB (since this business is not accredited, the BBB still take consumer complaints about fraudulent business locations seriously). read more

I've been to this Pep Boys four times over the last year to fix my headlights. First time they just replaced the bulbs. Next time they replaced one of the sockets, the next time they replaced the other socket. Went back today because both of my headlights had gone out again. I was there October 2022, May 2023, July 2023, and now September 2023. I've spent well over $500 and my issue still isn't fixed. Disappointed I even have to leave a review like this. I believe I have an obligation to others in my community to share when improprieties transpire, so that we can focus on supporting businesses who respect us. I showed up to this place around 5:20, close to closing, admittedly, but not last minute. To be fair, I didn't have any control over when/where I got a flat tire. I wandered around the store looking for assistance or someone who worked there, though it appeared as if no such person existed. Lastly, I saw a man staring at me awkwardly, he asked what I was doing and i told him that I had a flat tire and was wondering what options I had. I didn't know whether it could simply be patched or if I needed a replacement or what, regardless, he sent me to another counter where no one was present. I stood at the next counter for a couple of minutes until someone came in from the work bay. He asked what I needed and I explained. He looked at his watch and said "sorry, won't be able to do anything about that until tomorrow." Sort of surprised, i said "you can't even look at it to see if I can just patch it or something," to which he responded "no, you came in too late and I have a guy in there doing an alignment and that take quite a while." I asked politely again and he said I was SOL. By this time it was around 5:35, I asked another employee and that employee if they knew of anywhere nearby I could get a tire fixed and they all said no. I was quite annoyed because 1. This was a matter of safety, 2. While it was near closing time, it wasn't near enough to where everyone should have checked out. Here's where it gets ugly. I decide to shop around while I look on my phone for legitimate businesses that provide services. Suddenly, employees are cleaning individually packaged items, conveniently only in and around aisles I was looking at. I'd watch them staring at my every move and as I'd glance back they'd go back to pretending they weren't following me around the store. My one transgression apparently being that i was a youngish looking black male. As I made my way to the back of the store another employee decided took up the shift of following me, this time informing me that I needed to "wrap it up" as the store was soon closing. Well aware of what was going on, I decided to ignore him. This was at 5:40. About 5 minutes later, he came back and again told me I needed to "finish up, because were closing." I responded, "in 20 minutes right, seems like I have ample time to finish shopping." To which he said " ugh well uh my boss wants to close up early today." Now I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I know that a nationwide retailer with over 9,000 stores reaching all the way to Puerto Rico is not just going to up and close 20 minutes early because the manager feels like it. By this point I was disgusted by not only the lack of effort on anyone's part to make so much as a minimal effort to assist me, but also the blatant discrimination towards someone who came in wanting/ needing to spend money to solve a problem. I kept shopping, and the guy would walk back every 3 minutes in an attempt to make me uncomfortable. Mind you, nothing was said to the other customers in the store and when he would walk by me he would yell "I know, I'm doing my best to deal with it." And "I know, I guess boss really wants to get us out on time today I'm trying everything I can." The irony in all of this is that I would imagine a majority of people hired by pep boys are minorities, especially in Los Angeles, though we should all remember that just because that's true, there exists degrees of self loathing and cultures within organizations that allow the seeds of prejudice and discrimination to persist. Finally he came over a last time and it was 5:55 and I had had enough of the repulsive interactions, I took my items to the front, noticed the other customers who continued to shop unbothered and lo and behold, not even a single employee at the registers. I waited there so long that the security guard had to go find me an associate to check out!! So much for that big push to get out of there on time? I spotted some items at the checkout I wanted to look at and by the time someone showed up let the other person go in front of me. At that time, I got an important call about a relative being hospitalized prompting me to quickly set my items down and take off, only to be followed by an associate who then followed me out and wrote my license plate number down. What I experienced here was disgusting, inexcusable and a damn good reason to recommend you probably just shop across the street at Autozone if you're a person of color. I shouldn't have to wear my college degree to get assistance. I urge anyone who has a choice not to shop here, support local small business and contact corporate if you were discriminated against. read more

Had a 9:00 am appointment, greeted by Sam who welcomed me, answered all my questions, honored my coupon and kept me updated on service. Had an oil change and 2 front tires taken off and checked for leaks and put back on all in 1:15 minutes. No complaints here great job thanks Sam! read more
