My sons car broke down, and he had it towed here. Ended up being a fuel pump/ gas tank issue. After getting it fixed and paying we were surprised by how expensive it was. Called around to get quotes from other garages and everyone came back about 1/3 the cost charged here. Also every other garage quoted out 1-2 hours of labor where they charged for seven hours here. I meant to write this a couple of weeks ago... I always have some trepidation when I have to make a trip to an auto parts store due to some previous frustrating experiences. Many times the staff although wanting to be helpful, are usually overwhelmed with phones ringing and customers like myself asking for advice. No doubt being spread too thin leaves little time to organize and clean the store which makes finding items on your own quite a challenge. Not here. I was very impressed by Julie and her manager Karen that was working the day I went in. Specifically, their knowledge base and how incredibly organized and clean this store was. When I complimented them they explained that a clean and organized store is like a clean car...it just runs better. I agree. Went in there to get my break pads replaced. Had an appointment at 10:30 usually this should take about and hour or two depending on how busy they are. With my car being my only source of transportation I chose to stay in the lobby I was there for 10:30am - 2pm. They told me around 1:30 my cars lug nuts were stripped. I knew that was false because I just had my tires rotated. I told them to not do anything to my car and give me my keys. I went to another shop to find out my lug nuts were in fact not stripped and they were perfectly fine. Mind you when I first arriving at 10:30 to pep boys they were telling another lady that she had the same problem I had...seems like it was a scam to make more money off of people. read more

Hard to believe that after many oil changes and a brief stint of time where I was here several times a week while I thought wrenching on cars was to be my next hobby, I can't believe I haven't reviewed this store. Granted my experience inside the store itself was many years ago, I can still distinctly recall the staff being incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Whether I was looking for wear and tear parts for my Mazda 3 so I could have an independent mechanic install them, or after parts for a 94 Wrangler I was attempting to upgrade, the staff was quick and efficient in locating products in their system, and more often than not they also had the best price. In the Service dept, they're also affordable. A conventional oil change seems to consistently around $22, and if you're a DIY guy the store almost always has an inexpensive deal on everything you need! I think it's easy to overlook this national brand, but it seems that this one has solid standards that are being adhered to in Reno. That just means a better experience and more confidence in the products you buy or services you receive and more long term employment for locals. I'm just fine with that. read more

I was verbally told my appointment was re-scheduled, so I showed up a week later to find out the order was canceled, refunded and the tires were now discontinued. Wow., I guess they never wanted to honor the original deal. I asked for them to honor the deal, The district manager said no, and I was offered inferior tires at a higher price. I patiently waited for resolution, and they had their chance to make this right. They failed. Beware, this place has big issues and lost a long term customer for good. read more

Prior to contacting Reno Pep Boys, I had called around for brake estimates as well as had 2 inspections. I spoke to a representative at the Reno Pep Boys. Was quoted $209.99 for a standard rear brake service with resurfacing and new pads. This matched online pricing. Made an appointment. When checking in, was told by the check in tech and his manger on duty that they do not do resurfacing and can only do my brakes if I get new rotors. The cost $589.99. I kept asking why they don't honor their website and previous quote. They kept deflecting. After 10 minutes of back n forth, manager said their resurfacing machine was down and therefore could only do new rotors. But when asking for cost with only resurfacing, he quoted $697.99 and stated they have to charge for additional 3 hrs labor which inflated the cost above what he wanted to charge in 1st place. Very shady establishment. Do not recommend doing any repairs at Reno Pep Boys. read more

2.5 stars. I took my car in about 6 months ago for an oil change. I upgraded from the regular conventional oil to the Mobil 1 full synthetic because I like to run 10-15,000 miles between oil changes...not because the car is anything fancy. They did the work, rotated my tires - pointed out the tires were getting old, no high pressure sales. Appreciated. But, they stuck a regular Purolator oil filter on it - I just noticed in changing the oil myself. It's one that's not meant to go high mileage. Putting premium oil in the car but sticking a typical 3-5K mile oil filter on seems to defeat the point. I'm looking at the original receipt and paperwork, and it says in there the oil filter that comes with the oil change is valued at ~$4, and an upgraded one would cost more, so it's ultimately on me. But nobody pointed that out and I'm not going to read a contract with a line of people behind me. Just wish someone asked, 'Do you want to upgrade to the Mobil 1 extended mileage filter?' when we were completing the work order. read more

I'm bummed about my 2nd and last experience with Pep Boys. Both experiences were for alignments. My 1st was quick and I received texts on the progress including pictures. I chose the lifetime alignment and the guy there informed me there was a $30 off coupon. Really informative and courteous. I decided I'd like to do the same about a month later with my 2nd car. I scheduled the appointment on a Monday and about 15 minutes before the appointment I got a call that their alignment guy wasn't available that day. No big deal. The following Monday I had rescheduled another appointment and the same thing. 15 minutes before, no alignment guy. I rescheduled for that Wednesday and dropped off my car off at 9:30 (appointment time). I work across the street so that it appears convenient to just walk back over once the job is completed. I asked the guy at the desk before I left on an ETA. He said around 2. That day it was 3:45 so I called to check the status since I didn't get a call or any texts. The guy on the phone said it wasn't completed yet and they will have it done by the end of the day. I asked what is the end of the day because I get off work at 5pm. He said 7. I told him I didn't want to wait that long and that's why I dropped my car off relatively early. I also mentioned they had canceled on me twice. I let him know I would be picking up my car at 5pm completed or not. When I went in to get my key the guy at the desk offered an insincere apology to the lines of. "Sorry bout that. We'll get to it sometime." Not sure if they have an employee retention issue or just a bad couple of weeks? It seems like a larger chain like Pep Boys would have more than one guy capable of doing an alignment. In addition, just simple communication and being genuinely apologetic goes a long way to make a bad experience better to save the deal. Although, I don't like providing reviews, I thought this is necessary feedback for managers and/or the employees. Be semi-professional guys! I wasn't expecting to be coddled and I understand things happen, times get busy, life gets in the way or whatever. It's not difficult to be respectful when things get rough. Customer service is horrible and the service manager and mechanic are unprofessional and negligent . I tell them my concerns about their service on my car and they yell at me and fly into a rage. I asked the mechanic to reinstall the back seat that he took out. And he pushed me out of the way to fix it. When he was done I went to check but before I could he slammed my car door nearly taking my arm off. I told him he needed to be careful and he went into a rage. A very toxic place. Worst place ever to take your car!!! So I had a check engine light on, I had taken it to tires plus for a diagnostic a week early and my cylinder 6 was misfiring. But they didn't have a tech to work on it. So I take it to pep boys, I tell the Tim asshole guy what it had (cylinder 6 misfire) and asked if they could fix it and if they worked on valves and stuff like that, he said they do and they would get my check engine light off, well it was all a lie, they didn't have any experts that knew what they were doing, charged me 100$ for diagnostic and 10$ for some supposedly misc hardware. His only solution was replacing the whole motor where just labor he said would be 3500. What a douche bag!!!! Never again with them.... I should have listened to the bad reviews And all the bad experiences people post, they're trying to rob me for 110$ , fuck it let's take it to court..... they're not getting a penny from me!!! Already had a horrible experience and my car is worse off now then it was before I brought it in, but then Stan decided to call me and leave me a message about a poor review I had left them. Originally brought my car in and according to them my whole brake system needed to be replaced because I was hearing a chirping that sounded like a wheel bearing going out. So I called today, on my birthday, for him to tell me I apparently wouldn't have heard a loud knocking coming from my wheel well because of the chirping I was hearing prior. Apparently my struts were already bad before they did whatever they did, according to them, but weirdly enough I never heard that knocking before it was in their care. If they were indeed bad before though, shouldn't they have marked them as bad in my complimentary inspection? Wouldn't they have felt them as well as heard them when they pulled my car into the bay? Because I can hear them now, even going slowly over the smallest of dips. Not only that but my "brand new brakes" slipped while driving with my kids yesterday and we almost got in an accident so that was terrifying. Mentioned the possibility of a small gnome coming and sabotaging my car while it was in their care and he agreed with a "yeah maybe". Kind of an off putting remark to a customer. Then offered me to bring my car back in to have them look at it. No thank you. Never again. read more

How is this place still in business? They lie about everything and the customer service is non existent. My parents bought 4 tires here with a guarantee that said if they need a replacement before 85,000 miles or 3 years they will replace them free. And so we went back here because the tires are worn out and we haven't reached the 85,000 mile mark and it hasn't been 3 years. First they said the tires were still in good condition. So we went to other tire stores who all said they needed to be replaced soon. Then they finally admitted that the tires were pretty worn out but that only the manager would be able to take care of us and that he wasn't going to be in for a while. Finally we went in again spoke to the manager who said that even though everything is on file we would still need the paperwork (the paperwork that they stated we wouldn't need when we purchased the tires) in order to honor the guarantee. They're so eager to sell their little "deal" but when it comes to using it, it becomes impossible. This is the only and last time we ever do business with them and I strongly suggest that everyone go else where. Luckily we have many other options when it comes to auto care and tires here in Reno that are higher quality and respect their customers. read more

I was in town for the weekend when I thought my car started to over heat. I called every shop I could find on google & Yelp. It was really difficult to find a good shop that was open on a Sunday. Called Pep Boys and they had an opening Monday morning. Perfect because I was going to leave town that day (5 hours away). I even called a few shops on Monday morning and those were all booked. Even dodge was 2-3 weeks out lol. Tim, the service writer checked me in when I pulled up. Super nice guy. The technician pulled my car in, so I went outside to tell him what was going on. Ken Sr. is truly good at what he does, he checked my car from top to bottom & pressure tested it. No upselling, just genuine help. Turns out my car just dumped out the over flow from being over filled (what I figured and was hoping). Or the elevation caused it to spill out? What ever the case was Tim & Ken Sr. both took care of me and my car. Thank you guys. Definitely recommend this shop! read more

Purchased 4 tires online for pickup in store. They did arrive at the store within 24 hrs so that was nice. My wife went to pick them up after work and when she arrived they were the wrong size. The size was clearly stated in the receipt. So instead of offering to return the tires and have the correct tires delivered. They told us the correct tire size would now be approximately $50 more per tire. Obviously didn't make that purchase. The employee told us he couldn't change the price to the advertised price and that 1-800-pep boys are the only ones that can change the price. So guess what 1-800 pep boys said? They can't modify orders only the stores can change the order. Another example of big box customer service. Anyways I tried to talk to a supervisor and the csr on the phone refused. I turned in a complaint and we will see what happens. read more

So based off of just scrolling, the girl with the cut in her eyebrow (I remember her having tongue piercing and I believe her name is Sarah), has had multiple poor reviews. I came in for an oil change and she was very rude and condescending. I'm not too savvy on cars and I honestly did not know, that I supposedly didn't have oil in my car. I'm not sure if it's because I'm black or she just hates her job but I had a terrible experience. She didn't want to elaborate on the difference in oil changes and what type of oil I would need for my car. I left my keys and I got a call saying I needed to buy oil for my car and they would not put it in or do an oil change. Turns out I do have oil in my car.. apparently too much (since I added more and it's old.) They didn't check if I needed coolant or a new air filter. If it wasn't for my boyfriend taking it back the next day, I would have NEVER spent money there. I also called corporate and I will be following up. There's a reason this location has such a low rating. The only reason I came there was because it's close to my house. I also wanted to add the two service techs working there did not step in to offer any help either. They watched these interactions and continued to eat their lunch and ignore me. They were just as lazy and rude too. read more

I brought my 2001 Outback in just for a service. Oil change, transmission change, and tire rotation. My car was running perfectly fine. One of the mechanics, nice guy with a mustache told me that the car was mostly in great shape, apart from a wheel bearing that I would need to eventually take care of. Great! Shouldn't be more than 10 minutes. 30 minutes later, I got called over by the woman at the front desk, who told me that the transmission fluid was so old (I only had this car for one year) they took it out, put new transmission fluid in, but it wouldn't hold, kept slipping. My transmission was gone. Not going to lie I was very upset, but wasn't going to blame Pep Boys. They said I wouldn't be able to go faster than 25 miles per hour. Went to try and drive it. Didn't move an inch.. They made it out to not be their fault, just the fault of the last owner, which turned out to be wrong, for the most part. We decided to have the replacement quoted by Arrow Automotive, and they said yeah, the transmission was totaled. $2800 fix, more than the car was worth. Later on, they called back, to tell me that there was NO fluid in the transmission. Not a drop. Where was it? In the f**king differential. It was overfilled with transmission fluid. They put the transmission fluid in the wrong place!! Arrow automotive said that the transmission probably wouldn't have been in the best shape, but they probably caused a lot more damage to the transmission by running it with no fluid in it. I contacted headquarters demanding compensation, for my car, for the tow, for the diagnosis. Now I am out a car, and I am out $2200 putting a downpayment on another car that I might have not even had to purchase. In closing, f**k this place. read more

This business does not deserve my patronage. This incident was easily avoidable and the direct result of poor communication & business practices. I bought my tires here several months back and that experience was fine, I got a great deal and have been in a few times for rotations. I called last week and asked if I could come by the next day to have one of my tires that I popped replaced. After checking they had the tire I needed in stock, Ed told me "come by when we're open tomorrow," I asked if 4:30 was okay, he said yes. I show up then the next day, tell the guy in the office what I was told, he says "of course he told you that. He forgot to mention we're only doing appointments today, he's currently under review. I can refer you to another shop or my first available appointment is on 9/2" (this happened on 8/25). There was only one technician working and there were cars in the garage so I understand it was busy. I suppose I just expected at least a more sincere apology, an attempt to squeeze me in sooner, something other than a hard "can't do that until over a week later" to make up for the lack of service I expected to be getting that day, all while the girl I'm assuming is a manager sat scrolling on her phone in the garage outside the office. I ended up buying only the tire I needed and a smaller shop down the street that I walked into installed it and got me in and out in 25 minutes. I also want to stress that I don't believe Ed is the problem since the guy in the office made it out to be that way by telling me he was under review (this also threw me off, I feel like that should be confidential). Ed has always been great and professional when he sold me the tires, when I've been in for rotations, and handled my initial call the day before this incident exactly how I would have hoped- by telling me I can get my single tire replaced the next day, because a popped tire doesn't really happen by appointment, and I couldn't drive on my donut spare for over a week. So thank you, Ed, for trying to help me. I hope that Pep Boys will review how they handle situations like this and the professionalism of their office staff in the future. read more

Absolutely trash service. I went in twice to get my ac fixed for the 100+ degrees in Reno. Spent over 700$ and my ac is blowing hot air.

Used Virginia Street location first. Trying to fix loudly squeaking brakes. Was told would take 2 hours, actually took 5. Employee discounted price slightly to account for time lost. As we have no other transportation, had to wait in store (Virginia location) for 5 hours. Car "repaired". Next day, squeaking just as bad. Make appointment to correct problem we've already paid for. 2nd appointment takes ANOTHER 5 hours. Mechanic test driving car doesn't wipe his hands, leaves steering wheel and shifter COVERED with grease. Next day, STILL squeaking. Never been told why this is so hard to fix, or why it takes do long. Both front and back brakes under pep boys "warranty". Today, take car to this location, across from meadowood mall. No reassurance that repair, 3rd repair to same simple issue, will be free, as has already been payed for. Waiting. Going on 6 hours. Hoping for improvement in service/ repair, but not optimistic. Odds of refund unlikely. Honestly surprised nationwide company can be this ineffectual and inefficient. Shouldnt have to write yelps to get PAID FOR service. UPDATE: After 5+ hours, I called and was told I must be "riding the brakes", as if I'm an idiot. Was told they were trying to decide which store would pay for the repairs ...repairs which, again, had not yet been started. Was told to come get car. After walking to location, found empty waiting room with another customer who said he'd been waiting for 30 min. Nobody at desk in repair shop, one mechanic in garage, TALKING ON HIS CELL PHONE and ignoring us, despite repeated attempts to get his attention. Asked employee in sales area for help, was told it wasn't his job to get my keys. Mechanic never came, and after 2nd time alerting staff in other part of store, employee finally got my keys and paperwork. When I asked when my car could be repaired now, after the 3RD 5 HOUR REPAIR, was told he "didn't know" and they would "have to call me". I do not expect a call. I assume I can kiss the $400 dollars goodbye, although by any reasonable metric I deserve at the very least a full refund for the wasted time, money, and lack of repair. Wonder what the head of the company would say about this. Perhaps he can afford to waste 15 hours and $400, but as an average working stiff, I can't. Worst experience possible. read more

If I could give NO stars I would. UPDATE BELOW at the bottom of this first review After going to the first Pep Boys on Virginia street I then drove to the second. I asked the person at the service desk if the other Pep Boys had made an appointment to perform a Wheel alignment. They said no, we just work them in. I asked if they could do a wheel alignment for me and they did not respond just started asking me questions about my car etc. Finally I said can you do an alignment today? She said yes I would take an hour. That was 11:07AM. I gave her the keys and my cell phone for any text messages . At 12:10 I walked back into the store. I thought it was strange that my car was still where I parked it. Nope... They had not even started on the alignment told me they got busy on another car. Did not text me, or call. She said it would take another 35 minutes. I waited another 5 minutes and they never moved my car. I then walked in and said... I had an hour I don't have more we must cancel. She did not say I am sorry, she did not say anything just walked over to the service pack and pulled the keys and gave them to me. So I have now spent 1/2 a day 30 minutes to drive in over and hour waiting to get something that was promised and a drive home with getting the service i needed. First and last time for this chain. Update April 24.. After my initial review Pep Boys Customer Service contacted me and wanted more information which I happily provided. After a few days a new appointment was scheduled for my car and the alignment was preformed within 45 minutes by Umberto. He was very friendly and professional and explained exactly what was done and why. I also had some time to walk around the fully stocked store and was greeted by several friendly employees asking if I needed anything. This was a much more positive experience than the other one. I would have rated this experience higher except for the fact this should never have happen. It's my belief they did try very hard to made amends. THANK YOU Pep Boys for trying. read more

Went in for snow chains the week after a big storm. They were sold out. The guy behind the counter mentioned they can't get trucks in. I had to go elsewhere for my chains. I asked if they had medium (regular) sized ice scrapers, they only had truck size or mini scrapers. The store appears old but well maintained. The "showroom" felt empty. Display tracks spread widely to fill space. Maybe I just came at the wrong time. read more

Took my Xterra here for news tyres with their buy 3 get one free deal. Fairly simple and rudimentary procedure I would imagine. I had to come back 5, say that again, 5 times so that my tyres would stay at the proper level on inflation. My front driver side tyre went flat the first hour I had them on and needless to say, I was irked about having to promptly return for less than apologetic service. The passenger tyre in the front was the next to be problematic and on the 5th return visit, I asked them to replace my tyre. They did as asked, albeit with reluctance and then I bit the bullet and added fix-a-flat and I have not had problems since. My largest frustration was that they did not offer any discount or partial refund. They were receptive to fixing the problem but after that many return trips to fix what should be a basic procedure, you deserve a partial refund. I won't be back. read more

I recently purchased a battery from Pep Boys Auto Parts. The battery was not cheap, I think it was $215, and it after 2 months it died completely. I took the batter in with no receipt and the manager was super cool about swapping it out. It was clear that I was not trying to pull a fast one and just wanted a product that worked. All the guys working were very nice and one of the mechanics asked if he could swap the new and old battery out. Very nice! I highly recommend this store based off of the exceptional customer service I received. read more
