Went there for the Green cheese enchlada special on Friday $9.99 (with $3.29 drink purchase required). Enchiladas were OK, but not as good as many other places in town. Server was very professional, attentive, polite and the experience was pleasant. Because of the drink purchase requirment (we always order water with lunch) not much value to the "special' that we have found at place like Los Mariachi's that do not require a drink purchase for their specials...in fact LM includes tea with theirs. read more

This was a nice quiet spot. We did go a bit earlier in the day before the rush so it was very relaxing. Excellent service quick and always checking up on our party. The food was very satisfying and delicious. I had the smothered breakfast burrito and that was extremely tasty, not to spicy hot it had the perfect about of kick to it. The ladies sitting next to us said they come about 3 times a week because they also have an enchilada night. No liquor or beer. But get some tea and chow down on some really great Mexican food. So after a long trip home to Mesa from New Orleans I needed a seriously good Mexican Food fix. So while gassing up in Las Cruces NM my boyfriend jumped on Yelp and found Pepe"s. I grew up outside Los Angeles so I know anything that has the name Pepe's in it that it had to be good. We stopped in and picked up some really amazing tacos the beef was so tender and juicy that it just melted in your mouth it came with an amazing hot what I'm thinking was a habanero sauce that was just the right temperature. Now the burrito combination wasn't really on the top of the list for things to order it was more of a steak fajita burrito it came with beans and rice that were really g ood. What turned me off on the burrito was the size of the pieces of steak they were too large for the burrito and it could be a choking hazard the flavor of the steak was good its just not a good idea for a burrito maybe they could make the pieces smaller to fit into the tortilla better. This is a good restaurant but my preference is the tacos. read more

Here's why my August 2024 visit to Pepe's Restaurant may be my last. After earlier experiencing some good quesabirria tacos at Pepe's I upgraded this restaurant, but my most recent visit convinced me that Pepe's inconsistent food preparation is a major problem. On my most recent, and probably my last visit, I wanted to check out their Green and Red Chile con Carne Smothered Burritos. After all, this is the gold standard for any true New Mex restaurant. I came away disappointed. Here's why. Pepe's Restaurant is clean and a pleasant place for a casual meal. The gentleman waiting tables today was pleasant and efficient. The chips and salsa were on the table quickly. The tortilla chips were quite mediocre with little flavor and a crispy texture. Rate them a "C." The salsa was not like the salsas I'd previously experienced at this restaurant, it was sort of a salsa verde and it lacked flavor. It was somewhat high on the heat, but it was not very good salsa...rate it a "C-" or perhaps a "D." The two burritos arrived within ten minutes. The green chile burrito was awash in a very watery green sauce with little flavor. Both the sauce and the meat inside had little seasoning and I had to add a lot of salt as I consumed the burrito. This burrito was clearly well below the Las Cruces standard (and as a point of reference I have consumed hundreds of them from almost all major restaurants in town!) Rate this green burrito a "C-). The sauce over the red chile burrito was also thin but not as watery as that over the green. The flavor of the red burrito was marginally better than that of the green, but it was not up to the Las Cruces standard either. Unlike the red chile burrito I'd had previously this one had no cumin flavor which i take to mean that their chile con carne was under-seasoned in many other ways. Whereas the green chile was verging on poor, the red was just mediocre. Rate the red burrito a "C." To top it all off, they charged me as if I ordered rice and beans with the two burritos. What they charged me was far more than what I would have paid at El Jacalito, Si Senor, or Nellie's Cafe for instance. So you see, folks, given the whole experience, I can only rate Pepe's THREE and a Half Stars and I have no good reason to continue patronizing this restaurant. It is too inconsistent. I don't wish to pay that kind of money for "C" level food when there are many other good Mexican/New Mexican restaurants in town. (as a point of reference...a week or so later I enjoyed a big meal at Roberto's featuring Roberto's special combination plate and a smothered burrito for far less money that what Pepe's charged me this day for only two burritos!) Leave it to their local customer base. read more

I ordered a Chicken Chimichanga. What I got was a large tortilla with chicken and red sauce. Nothing else inside and definitely not fried. It came with rice and beans on the side. Even though it wasn't a true chimichanga I was going to eat it anyway. It was disgusting! Two bites was all I could handle. The chicken was BAD and had a small bone in it. The waitress told the owner who said it was not bad. It WAS! Of course I got a check. No apology from them, or a thank you for my money. So many better restaurants in town, no need to go to PEPEs. read more

We decided to stop at Pepe's today for lunch. We have driven by the location many times but hadn't stopped until today. We had been told by a friend that he couldn't get his food spicy enough here, but we do not need spicy hot. My wife had the shredded beef tacos and I had a smothered shredded beef burrito. Hands down one of the best shredded beef tacos I've ever had. As a new resident to Las Cruces, I'm enjoying trying new local foods. I'm a San Diego native where Mexican food is top tier but I think Pepes might take the winning crown. At the current moment, in-house dining is not available but we sat on the patio in 100+ degree heat and it was worth it! Service was exceptional. Everything from top to bottom was great. Chips and salsa, rice and beans, my partners red enchilada with fried egg on top.. bomb bomb bomb!! I encourage everyone to continue to support local businesses during the pandemic, especially Pepes! My dad and I have been driving by this place for awhile and we have been meaning to try it but never have gotten around to it. Today we were doing some running around in the area and we decided to stop by for lunch. I had ordered a bean and cheese tostada with all the fixings on it and let's just say it was amazing the guacamole was so delicious and it had an amazing flavor and the fresh veggies just added the crunchy crisp goodness. The Spanish rice was soft and fluffy with really good flavor. To drink I had the homemade strawberry lemonade and it's the best lemonade that I have ever tasted. It had a slight tang and it was a little sweet but not to sweet that it became refreshing, even the cup was cute I asked if they had sold them!!! The staff was extremely friendly they went above and beyond for us. Let's just say we will most definitely be coming back read more

Nice server. Great food. The price is on par with a decent sit down Mexican restaurant. Around $10 for an enchilada plate. I had the Rainbow Enchilada plate. It was very good. My brother had the fajitas, and he said it was good. It was well worth stopping by on our way to Roswell on vacation. Once I got over my disappointment when I found out that Pepe's doesn't have a beer/wine or liquor license, I settled in and enjoyed myself. One of the really notable things about Pepes is how friendly everyone is. There must be a lot of regulars, because people kept coming in, greeting people at other tables, then settling in for their meal. Spouse ordered caldo de pescado (fish soup) which proved to be a rich golden broth with a few pieces of white fish. Not a lot of fish - but a huge amount of flavor. A good, light meal. My meal was shrimp cocktail, Mexican style. If your idea of shrimp cocktail is half a dozen shrimp stuck on the edge of a glass with cocktail sauce - set that aside. Mexican shrimp cocktail (of which this was a good example) consists of a large footed glass half filled with shrimp - usually large (as these were) but sometimes baby size-- topped with a cold, well seasoned, tomatoey broth with cilantro and some veggies. Very good! When it comes time to pay, they don't give you a bill. You just go out to the cash register in the next room, tell the cashier what you had, and pay your bill. All very friendly. We will undoubtedly go back to Pepes, and, being pre-warned, won't have to deal with the no-booze disappointment next time. read more

A great find! The family was having the daily debate over where to eat lunch on our vacation roadtrip. Dad spotted Pepe's on the way to some other restaurant Mom was guiding us to. The outside doesn't look like much but inside was such a pleasant surprise! Very clean and colorfully decorated with authentic Mexican stylings. The table ordered: Caldo de res, steak Tampico, red enchiladas with cheese and beef, and beef flautas. All of the dishes were excellent. I only wish I was able to have a cold Corona with the food. Recommended by a friend that have lived for many years just down the road. First impression in the lot is that the sewer order was very strong, not a good start to the meal.. I had the three Pepes special steak taco plate and son in law the chicken burrito special. Chips and sauce was served, they only have one real thin sauce hot but not real flavorful, no other choice available. The chips were a little thick and tough and not cooked evenly, some overdone and so under done and flexible and not crisp on the chips 1 star. There was only one waitress and I had to ask for everything and not real attentive, had to remind her that I had requested a glass of ice. The Tacos were tasty with soft shells, the refried beans just so so nothing special, the rice also run of the mill. I did enjoy the tacos. The chicken burrito was flavorful and well seasoned and enjoyed very much. I felt it was a bit pricy for what you get. The restaurant was clean and looked nice but again nothing special. I would have to try other dishes for a better review. All in all OK but certainly nothing special on just one visit. I understand that they have ground beef and shredded beef for their food which I like. It would be much better for a better sauce and thin crispy chips cooked correctly this should not be a challenge to overcome. read more

We were driving towards Roswell and stop for lunch here. I definitely recommend this place the food was delicious and the restaurant was clean. I had the Tampico plate everything on the plate was good my sister and I shared it and it was enough. Outstanding lunch. We went a little late in the afternoon and were one table of only 3 others, but the food and the service were excellent. I had rolled red enchiladas with chicken. Very flavorful and good portions, the red sauce was wonderful just the right flavor and a nice burn. My wife had the taco plate, which she is still talking about. Everything freshly made and it was all hot (temperature and seasoning. The complimentary salsa and chips were a treat. We finished up the meal with a couple of sopaipillas which were fresh from the frier and delicious. It was my first time eating here thinking the service was going to be good but I got the wrong impression. I came here with my boyfriend and my daughter, they sat us down, and our waiter got our drinks. That's what made me think our waiter was doing his job correctly until he got our order that's when he started slacking off. Another guy came and gave us our food but told us our waiter was going to bring our silver wares. And of course that was got me annoyed and mad. We waited there sitting like idiots thinking "are we supposed to just use our hands just to eat our food?!?!?" We waited and waited for almost 10 minutes until we flagged another waitress to bring us some silverware. She brought us our silverware and our food wasn't too hot like what we expected. But of course my boyfriend wanted more salsa for his food when he told the guy that brought our food the guy told us he will go get more for us. A few minutes later I seen the same guy that was supposed to bring more salsa just walking around and spacing out. Of course we never got the salsa which was a bummer. But when we were ready we needed a to go box. I told the lady manager if I may get a to go box and she said okay, but then again I seen her stop and started a conversation with another employee. This restaurant is very eye catching from the outside food is very delicious, but SERVICE?!?!? not what I what from any other restaurant. SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE.
