Dropped off my car to get my pinion seal replaced, they did an awesome job. I took my car to a couple of shops but they gave me the run around and told me its a tough job to do, but not these guys. They also returned my car in a timely matter and price is very reasonable. This is my first Yelp review ever! I'm happy to do one for Ken and his business. I brought my 1970 Bronco project car to him after trying 2 other shops closer to my home in L.A. Basically had to get on a wait list to even get in those other places. I went by Ken's place to get some prices and see if I could tow my Bronco in and get some work done. It started with changing some worn bushings and a clutch job. The price was good around 1,200 for a lot of labor work due to the rust. I decided to give him some more business and let them install all new brakes and a brake booster. I haven't picked the car up yet but I know that the price will be fair for the work. I highly recommend Performance 4 Wheel for any of your gear orientated or drive train problems. Nothing fancy, you'll get a great honest mechanic when you walk in and walk out knowing the job will be done right. read more

I live near by performance and I always see the coolest 4x4s parked outside- K5 blazers, broncos, landcruisers, suburbans and ram trucks to name a few. A few months back the emergency brake on my 4Runner wasn't engaging so after some investigating I noticed oil all over the inside of my rear tire. I brought my truck into Ken's shop and he told me the axle seal had broken that the gear oil had ruined the brake shoes in the rear. I was given a very reasonable quote so i opted to have both front and rear axles serviced plus new brake pads and shoes installed. Performance had me back on the road faster than I expected. Just a few weeks ago I came back in because my locking hubs were not working and ken took care of me right away despite have long a long queue of trucks ahead of me. The staff at performance 4wd are very knowledgeable and honest men, I was very impressed with their service and will be returning with more business in the future. read more

I am new to 4 wheel drive vehicles and recently bought an older (1982) Jeep Cherokee Laredo. The 4 wheel drive wasn't shifting correctly and Ken at Performance first tried to help me with it over the phone. When that didn't work I brought it in and after discussing the front hubs that were locked up and incorrect shift pattern of the 4 wheel drive he estimated I was in for about $300 to get new hubs/replacement and to straighten out the transfer case/shifter. He called me before the day was over and told me after inspection on the rack that someone in the past had put the hubs AND transfer case shifter together incorrectly and he got everything reassembled correctly for $100 and everything works great... Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but my experience with performance 4 wheel drive has not been pleasant... I originally took my 2010 Tacoma for a differential gear ratio upgrade, due to lifting my truck and running 35 inch tires. After talking with Ken, I followed his advice & went with 4.88's front and back. That bill came to $1,500 ($700 Parts/$800 labor). The first problem arrived 4 or 5 days later when I found oil leaking from the rear differential cover. I wasn't happy as I'd just paid $800 on labor and now my differential cover is leaking oil. So I called Ken and arranged a day and time to fix the leak. Leak fixed; the following weekend I drove about 180 miles round trip to the desert. On the way back I felt a vibration that started small but by the time I got within a few miles of home, it was pretty bad because I couldn't drive over 60 mph. The next day, without calling, I drove my truck to Kens shop for him to to Inspect it. He asked me to leave the truck so he could check it out. The diagnosis was a broken u joint which caused the transmission yoke to break as well. I thought it was extremely unusual since I keep my u joints well greased and I didn't abuse the truck. Coincidence? I believe the u joints weren't properly torqued... But $350 dollars later, problem solved. Now... it's been a year and 2 weeks, and on my way to work, (4.5 miles away), I hear a loud, consistent clank noise somewhere underneath the truck. I slowly drove the truck to a recommended, nearby transmission shop and was advised that it was the differential. Because it was Friday afternoon, I had it towed home on a flatbed, then Monday, had it towed to a different, recommended differential shop. His findings... I had 2 broken gear & pinion teeth, AND the worn, stock, 2010 differential bearings! WTH! Ken didn't replace the bearings when he did the gear upgrade. And now I have a $750.00 repair bill. read more
