This place is one of those that you can't judge by the looks!! Initially its seems out of control until you stop and see what's going. I did a Groupon for a radiator flush and fill for the Vette. And got an alignment for my 18 yrs son's as a BDAY present because his car was in need of some TLC!! The value we did receive from this place was more than that!!! I called in to schedule an appointment for the requested services I was given a date and time to show. When I showed up and checked in with the normal information. I received an explanation of the process that they take your vehicle through. You not only get what you originally requested you get so much more!!! It's like a check up for the entire system. Basically check up that tells you about your vehicle vitals. The value on that is PRICELESS. They will email or print the results for you and go over what they with you to ensure you know what repairs are needed or not. Plus they will tell you what's going good with your vehicle So you aware before you they have small area and a bathroom if you choose to wait. And the quoted time for the work can vary, depends on what work is being done. From my last service there with my now 18 year old son. Parking on the street for your appointment is best because there maybe other cars that have to move making room to get in and out of the bays. What I do know is the value received is epic!! I drove an hour to get there to have work done on my car I drove up to the parking area to have my car repaired I was yelled at by the service guy a few times to stop my car which I did it's a very tight parking area I have a large vehicle so I stopped parked it went to walk up to the office sign the little white office sign with an arrow in the back is a little desk where the owner said I'm right here which I couldn't see that good I decided to leave and I was very disappointed my advice is park on the street if you can find parking which I couldn't and then walk up to the little white sign and wait for them to come to you. read more

Bought a Groupon for a coolant flush and they did a once over on my car telling me I needed a new axle seal because it was leaking. I was given a quote of $330 parts and labor, ok fine do it. Once they got it apart they called me and said I'll need an entire new axle, bearings, and seals, and brakes, now the price is $1400. I reluctantly agreed and asked if they have financing which he (Francisco) said yes. I looked up their website for in house credit and the company charges 129% interest! I got my own card through my bank. When I came back to get the repair done I heard a noise in my engine and it was the top to the radiator getting chewed up in the belt red flag #1. I brought it to Francisco's attention and he was completely dismissive, essentially saying oh well. When I got my car back the 2nd time they failed to secure my center wheel cap which flew off on the freeway and I had to replace for $75. I called the shop, spoke to Francisco about both incidences of their incompetence and he apologized and offered to replace the part, and reimburse me for the wheel cover. At the end of the day, I texted him multiple times, and now he ghosted me! Avoid this place like the plague! Their labor rate is way too high, they marked up my parts an exorbitant amount, and did shoddy work. Save yourself the headache of dealing with this shop!! read more

I had several items addressed: oil change, replace front break pads and replacement of control arms both sides, alignment and fuel injection service. Car is steering and braking better, there was a vibration issue and it turned out to be a wheel balance problem but they took care of it. Absolutely one of the worst mechanics in the area! I had a problem with my brakes, they recommended and performed a brake fluid flush as well as a "comprehensive vehicle inspection" , only to have the brakes totally fail and go all the way down to the floor 2 months later. Again they recommended and supposedly changed the master cylinder the next time (charging the full amount, even more than anyone else I checked) and kept the vehicle all day on both occasions only to have the master cylinder fail within 4 months of their "work"! I brought back the master cylinder they "replaced" to try to get a refund as there was a 2 year 24,000 mile warranty 1 week ago and I am still waiting to hear from them. I wouldn't recommend them to a dog catcher!! They may have made money off of me, but WILL NEVER again!! read more

This is My 3rd review about Performance specialties. I don't want to go into my 1st review about them but just to let everyone know, The 4800 and something dollars they charge me to fix my 87 Chevy Camaro. The check engine light still came on after driving off of their property 2 miles away. Bobby the mechanic gave me a bottle of emissions cleaner to put in my gas tank with Chevron gas which I have always used in my car. I've owned this car for 32 years. Since I left them the bad review a few weeks ago I did receive a call from Bobby telling me that they warranty their work. There is no way in hell I would ever bring my car back to this company. I am still trying to drive my car even though the check engine light is on and I have expired tags and it won't pass the smog. I tried driving it to work seaworld drive getting on to 5 South going to Coronado. As soon as I got on to the freeway the car completely shut down. I was in the 2nd to the left lane. 5:30 in the morning otherwise I would have been killed. The tow truck driver came out my car has been diagnosed with the The fuel pump that performance specialties replaced and charged me $1200 for went out. I was almost hit 4 different times in the middle of the freeway by different vehicles. I'm contemplating taking this company to court. This makes me sick to my stomach what they did to me. And then they have the audacity to tell me their work is warranty and to bring my car back. read more

Took a car here once; got overcharged for a clutch replacement but whatever. Ever since they've been frequently texting asking me to bring my car in as if they are in need of business. Well, every time I have a repair to get done and I hit them back, they either never respond, or they get back to me with a ridiculous price to get the repairs done. So I blocked their number and I'm done with them. I'm not recommending them to anyone and I will steer people clear from this place every chance I get. In business since 1974? This is a family business and they are all very knowledgable. Ernie takes the time to explain the issue and even show you a part that they are replacing and why it's worn out, broken etc. They (in my experience) can take a little longer than normal but that is replaced by quality service at a low cost. I am okay with this approach. They generally start (when troubleshooting) at the cheapest fix and work up from there; all the while keeping costs low for the person bringing in their vehicle. Took my truck there for a blown out spark plug, Ernie said he's done 100s of those repairs. When I picked up my truck it had the check engine light on and wasn't running correctly. The son charged me $700 and told me to bring it back so they could tear the engine down to see what caused it. Turns out they installed the spark plug too deep and piston was making contact with spark plug. Ernie said bring it back and he'll fix it, he installed a plug fouler to pull the spark plug up from piston and said you're good to go. Plug fouler are used to space spark plugs up out of combustion chamber in high mileage, oil burning vehicles so they don't foul the spark plug. Engine still had a miss and check engine light on. I had to have the engine rebuilt by another shop, the piston had dents in it from contact with spark plug, cost me $5600 plus $700 for Performance Specialties to ruin my motor. If you are thinking about using these guys.......don't! I turned them into California State Repair Board and got a judgement against them, it's on record!! read more

That is not true. You did not call me and that is the problem. I had to call you and was told by your son several times that I needed to speak to the father because the son didn't know any about the car. You being in business that long should have taught you to communicate with the owner of the vehicle. You never called me I had to constantly reach out to you. My car was in non operative which is why it was there in the first place. My car was no neglected there. You failed to contact me to let me know the issue and did not run the test until several calls was made. So don't act like you did me a favor. The car was there because you took long to work on it m. Don't get on here and tell lies. I've been to several mechanics and was never treated this way. I dropped the car off they call and let me know what's wrong with it and how much is going to cost. This is not the service I received and that is why I made sure I reported it. I wouldn't want any other customer to be treated the way I was. Instead of trying to blame me for something that didn't happen re-evaluate your unprofessional behavior so this doesn't happened again. read more
