Before a single dish arrived, this restaurant had already won me over starting with the air itself. Walking in, I was met with a clean, refined fragrance that perfectly matched the room's energy, upscale without being cold, polished without being pretentious. The kind of place that knows exactly what it is. The hospitality was exceptional. The host made me feel genuinely welcomed, and my server was knowledgeable, warm, and clearly passionate about the chef and the menu. Not a rehearsed performance, real enthusiasm. That's rare. I ordered the chef's signature: sea bass with black rice. The fish was perfectly executed, delicate, flaky, with a sear that gave the skin just the right amount of texture. The black rice was earthy and dramatic, the ideal counterpoint. Every element on that plate had a reason to be there. Some restaurants impress you. To be honest, really disappointed. When we walked in, staff was so friendly, the place is beautiful, and the ambiance is great. But the food was really subpar. I got the tomato pasta which ended up being a weird collection of pasta, tomatoes, olives, and edamame that frankly didn't blend well. My fiancee got a strip steak and it was undercooked and tough to chew. The mushrooms, brussels and tiramisu were all good however. I was very excited to try Perle Mesta but left the restaurant very disappointed. The lack of flavors was very surprising coming from a James Beard award winner. For the price they were charging, I was expecting the food to taste better than it did. They charged $7 for a prawn that was just a regular shrimp. I ordered them grilled but it came out burnt. Just not enjoyable. We wanted to celebrate my mom's 50th birthday so we brought our own cake, but we were surprised with a cake cutting fee regardless if we or they cut it. We were looking at their menu online and we both agreed to each order the Sorghum-glazed sea bass and we're so glad we did! Each order had its own issues, if this was a quick and cheap meal it may be one thing but for $70+ per order it was overall a disappointing experience. Perle Mesta was such a pleasant surprise. I honestly wasn't expecting much because of the poor reviews, but we ended up having an amazing dinner. We kept it light and ordered only a few items, but all of them were delicious. We tried the Parmesan truffle fried okra with candied lamb belly, the Périchor ham on milk bread, and the sea bass with black rice. I've also heard from a few of my coworkers that their bison is huge and absolutely delicious, so that's definitely next on my list. Can't wait to come back and try more! read more

Came in on a Wednesday night around 7 PM expecting a nice dinner, especially based on past experiences at other Chef Black restaurants, which have always been excellent. Unfortunately, this visit completely missed the mark. The restaurant was maybe 25% full, yet it took 30 minutes just to receive drinks -- two whiskeys on the rocks, a wine, and a prosecco. Nothing complicated. After another 20 minutes, our waitress finally returned to take our food order. After waiting a total of 1 hour and 45 minutes, I finally went to the bar and asked to just pay for the drinks and leave because I needed to get back to relieve our babysitter. While waiting on the check, the food finally came out. At that point, we just asked for everything to be boxed up. To their credit, the restaurant comped the entire meal and drinks, which was appreciated, but it still did not make up for the overall experience. Once we got home and opened the food, it was even more disappointing. The appetizers were extremely underwhelming for the $16-$20 price point, and the $32 entrée looked barely larger than an appetizer itself. Between the long wait, poor service, and lackluster portions, the experience simply did not justify the cost or the time. I know Chef Black is capable of much better because the quality at the other restaurants proves it. That's what made this visit so disappointing. read more

Quite frankly, we were disappointed with both food and service, particularly since we were so excited to come since we had read up on the chef and wanted to try one of his restaurants. We came here for lunch the day after Christmas and were the first to be seated. The place was otherwise empty and started filling up gradually. Our server was super friendly and sweet, but she failed to mention some important details. For instance, nowhere on the menu did it say that the escargot didn't come with actual escargot. We didn't know, and the server didn't tell us. When the appetizer came it was literally mushrooms with cheese on top and a piece of toast. It tasted okay, but we would never have ordered that for $14 if we had known there was no escargot in it. In addition, the menu didn't mention whether or not the sandwiches came with fries. So we ordered truffle fries as an appetizer, assuming it would have said something if it came with, and ordered a burger and the French dip, both of which ended up coming with the same fries. One would think that the server might mention that there were fries on the side so that we wouldn't need an additional plate full of fries, but that too was not the case. Both burger and French dip were good, but honestly nothing special. We also ordered the salmon, which tasted really good. Everything on that plate was comforting and well-seasoned, but the portion size was very small. If I had only ordered that as my entree and nothing else I would have left hungry. Overall a disappointing experience in terms of expectation vs reality, and also a lack of communication that left us feeling like we just didn't get what we paid for. read more

Christmas Eve dinner with my wife. We had been wanting to try Gray Sweater -- but for one reason or another had never gone. Chef Black's Perle Mesta had seating so we went. The lobby was beautifully decorated for Christmas-- so we started with a good first impression. Unfortunately, it ended with the lobby. The restaurant decor was OKAY in sort of an understated retro vibe. We were greeted upon entry and seated promptly. Then we waited and waited and waited some more. Finally the server appeared and took our orders. More time elapsed and our cocktails arrived. I ordered a grey goose martini dirty and it was quite possibly the worst martini I have ever had. Olives were old and foul tasting. I should have sent it back. My bad. More waiting and then our starters arrived. My wife had the baked cheese and I had the lobster bisque. Both were unremarkable. I ordered the Branzino and my wife had the short ribs. The fish skin was nicely crisped, but the fish was dry and overcooked. The predominant flavor was salt. The short ribs were nice and tender and not greasy. Again seriously over salted. Both of our sides were blah and tasteless. Finally dessert was served and proved to be the icing on a disappointing dinner. The apple pie top crust was flakey but everything below it was average at best. I have had better apple pie from Wal Mart. My wife ordered the chocolate cream pie. This travesty should never have left the kitchen except via the trash can. The crust was much too thick. The filling was rubbery and gelatinous and only had the faintest hint of chocolate flavor. I have had better freezer pies from the grocery store. Chef Black -- your name is all over this restaurant. Whatever nameless person you have hired to run it is ruining your good name. You have some fixing to do and you better do it soon. read more

Perle Mesta is a wonderful date night or special occasion restaurant. It opened in late June in the Skirven Hotel, a concept of Chef Andrew Black, a James Beard 2023 award winner. The venue is opulent. The decor embraces a mix of orginial building design and appointments with some of the 2007 updates and the more recent updates for Pearle Mesta. The north wall of the main dining room is craved plaster of Chef Black's favorite herbs and spices. The wall is both interesting and stunning. Additional work is ongoing, out of site from the patrons, involving three private dining rooms. We were fortunate to get a "back stage" tour of these dining rooms, escorted by Kaiya. They hope to have the rooms available in the coming months. They also plan to install a library in the restaurant lobby to house Chef Black's culinary book collection. I ordered the sorghum glazed sea bass with black rice in citrus beurre blanc. It was amazing! Jan ordered the citrus fennel-dusted sea scallops in parsnip cream, blood orange reduction, and butternut squash vinegarette. She thoroughly enjoyed the scallops. The service was good. The prices are reasonable. My sea bass was $38. Some of the dishes served to others looked amazing. The only problem was the server being soft-spoken with the background music too loud. What a great lunch we just had today. The place was not busy when we came in. The restaurant is beautiful but not too fancy, which I liked. Our server was friendly and he gave good feedback about the menu. We weren't impressed with it in the beginning, I just felt like the menu needed a section for entrée or soups. Until we tasted the food. The Caesar salad was amazing. Taro chips instead of croutons!? It worked. Caesar salad is my go to and this was one of the best I've tasted. We also ordered the mushroom and truffle pizza, and we thought we would have some leftovers, but we finished it! It was the perfect lunch pizza. It was so light, and the mushrooms were of quality. Every single one of us ended the meal confused why the portions were so small and why we were still hungry. I feel bad that I spent that much money on dinner to pick up food again on my way home. Parking was also difficult and we had to find street parking which overall would be fine if I wasn't still hungry walking back to my car. Wow - a true dining experience from Chef Andrew Black and lunch did not disappoint. Got the deviled eggs along with the French dip sandwich (they also can give you a side of horseradish sauce upon request), and both were amazing. Considering their "hightea" experience? Think again. Not only do you have to pay upfront online to reserve this experience but it auto adds a gratuity tip to the order for the "cooks". Consider what I say about the food and then rethink this part. We get there and our table is set out already with tea cups and tea additions. The waitress tells us it's her first time doing this. They only had 3 tea options..... for high tea. (Looking back the online description says choice of two teas but only having 2 or 3 options seems bleak) It says "sweet and savory bites" and while I am familiar with high tea being finger foods I didn't realize how little we would be given for 3 people. 75 dollars per person which includes a glass of champagne. One pot of non impressive tea per person. For the tray shared : 9 palm sized open faced sandwich finger foods. 9 small presliced cheesecake bites, two baklavas, 4 macaroons, and two chocolate mice. With gratuity that you had no choice in adding was over 300 for 3 people. Then we get told they outsource all sweets from la baguette!! No scones? This is truly not a high tea and looking back the only good experience was being in a pretty atmosphere with my friends. Maybe get food if you're staying at the hotel but don't come here for a "HighTea". I give it two stars cause the hotel has charm and the food didn't send me to the hospital. read more

We had an absolutely amazing experience. The service from Jason and Landon, as well as the bartender Taylor was top-notch. They paid attention to our personal story of it being our anniversary- the bartender even made a drink based around the 17th anniversary gemstone for us to experience. Jason and Landon were attentive and knowledgeable. Professional and friendly. The food was flavorful and well thought out out. We were carried back to our recent trip to Finland with the venison and scallop dish- both felt so Scandinavian! And were also perfectly prepared. The portions were exactly right. Price point was great. We live in Mesta across from the Perle Mesta residence and loved the ambiance of the restaurant. The glassware was so perfectly matched the with era of Perle. We loved the decor right down to the original tile floors. If we could afford to dine there every day we would ! But we will absolutely be back for every special occasion! I really enjoyed my stay at the Skirvin Hilton in Downtown Oklahoma City, despite the 12 degree icy weather. Such a beautiful, historic building that dates back to 1911. Today's hotel is named for its founder, William Balser Skrivin. Just off the main lobby is the elegant restaurant called "Perle Mesta", named for Skirvin's daughter. Perle Mesta is run by James Beard Award-winning chef Andrew Black. Such a classy establishment with impeccable service. Although I visited their bar in the evening, I only dined in for breakfast over two days. I have to say their scrambles eggs are exquisite. The perfect moist curd, just how I like it. Steak "Bowl" was excellent, even if it wasn't served in a bowl. What seemed to flummox me the most were their potato side descriptions. One dish said "caramelized potatoes" and the other said "smashed potatoes". Between the Perle Mesta Breakfast and Steak and Egg Bowl, they were both the same. I arrived for my reservation at 7:15 and I was promptly seated and greeted. I got to my table and unfortunately my drinks took 30-45 minutes to arrive. Additionally I would say I did not have my entree until 8:30PM. In regard to ambiance you tell there is attention to detail there BUT the tables are so close together that it takes away from the experience. Unfortunately our waiter was nice but he was so task saturated that we rarely were attended to. In regard to food, the flavors were great I'd say my steak was a 7.5/10. The portion size was lacking for the price as well which can be seen in the photo. The Kyoto cocktail was strong but I felt that the flavor met my expectations 8.5/10 nice sweet undertones but strong. I waited to leave a review as I reached out to get a response regarding our experience. No response, but they're active on social media, so I'm just going to leave the less than stellar review I was hoping to avoid. We dined there on Sunday evening for a birthday, and went to enter through the large doors under the awning. They were locked, so we entered through the hotel entrance. It wasn't busy, there were 5 other tables, we were the 6th table, and nobody came in after us. There was no acknowledgement of the birthday when we arrived or at any point during dinner. We did order 5 of the 6 appetizers, and they took about 25-30 mins to start trickling out. We didn't mind, we were hanging out at that point having a cocktail. The Kyoto Nights is one of my favorite drinks I have tasted. The appetizers were mostly good. The wagyu was chewy, but the rest great. We ordered entrees, and a little while later our server came back and informed us they were out of 2 of the 3 entrees we ordered. My mother changed her order from venison to sea-bass and asked if she could sub the rice for the rosemary potatoes. The other entree was the steak, but since they were out of that one, we did the Wagyu steak entree instead. We waited 45mins to an hour for our entrees to show up. The manager was chatting to servers in the background, and quality checked every table around us. He walked past us multiple times and refused to stop or make eye contact. There is no way he didn't know that we were waiting. At this point our body language had shifted and we were getting fidgety. I tried to catch his attention to no avail. When the food arrived, my mother's dish still had rice. She asked if he asked about the potatoes, and was told chef had curated each dish to pair with certain flavors, so no substitutions. If we compromised on 2 of our 3 entrees, you can send out a side of mash. I feel as though the value was great, the food was delish, but management will be the demise of this concept. read more

What I ate!!! -I had the coconut milk scallop ceviche -Half a dozen oysters on the half shell -Butter bean and tomato w/grilled caribbean indian roti -Belgian artichoke, asparagus, roasted butternut squash, mushrooms, truffle pasta, corn and celery root nage. Not even sure where to begin. The food was absolutely amazing! The ceviche was delicious, the scallops were perfect, there was a coconut broth that was so good I drank it when we finished the ceviche. It had l some sliced peppers that gave it a kick, but the right amount of kick. It came with some plantain chips that were thin and crispy and complimented the ceviche perfectly! The oysters came with a strawberry mignonette that I personally liked. I believe it was made with champagne vinegar, so if you aren't a fan, I would ask that they not add it to the oysters. Im an oyster snob and the oysters were DIVINE, the brine wasn't too salty and they were so creamy!!! BUTTER BEANS!! wheww, I wanted to go back there and pick the pot they made them in clean!! There were a few dollops of goat cheese(I believe), I never knew how bomb those would taste together. The roti was top teir, it wasn't greasy and the ends were crisp. I would actually go back and beg for a full entree serving of it. The pasta was a work of art. GORGEOUS! Everything was delicious, the celery root and sauce were my favorite part. Again, if I was not in public I likely would have picked my plate with no shame. Staff- we had two tables. Our servers were Colt and Andy(spell ). They were friendly, kind, never appeared to be in a hurry or rush, but always there when needed. My cup was never empty. They were sooo dang pleasant. Several other staff came over to check in, take photos, and help make a toast for the birthday girl we celebrated. Chef Black stopped by and I fan girled. Atmosphere- BEAUTIFUL and THOUGHTFUL! There is a wall with all of Chef Black's favorite herbs/aromatics/mushrooms dried and paint to the wall. I love it and kind of want to do that in my own kitchen. Andrew Black has done it again! Everything here was delicious. We stuffed ourselves with so much delicious food. The sea bass was great with the perfect sauce to compliment it. The rice was not as good and kind of hard. The duck was delicious. It was cooked perfectly and the mushroom and cream sauce on the bottle was good enough to lick off of the bowl. The scallops in the ceviche were sweet and the combination of the tomato and jalapeño were divine! The service wasn't the best. I had asked for water from our server but she never came back around until either the manager or someone else came to check up on us. The setting was nice and seating was comfortable. To drink, we had mimosas (right now there's only wine and mimosas). For lunch we both got sandwiches (the pastrami and skirt steak), and they were both pretty good! I loved my pastrami sandwich - it was delicate, juicy, and the ciabatta was perfect. My fiance got the skirt steak and it wasn't what he expected. He wanted a more fruit forward cheesy sandwich (because of the peaches and Brie) but it ended up being very chimichurri heavy. Overall I'm going to come back and try their dinner! read more

A welcome new addition to Downtown OKC that is worth the hype! You can feel the attention to detail throughout the restaurant at every stage. Although limited, the menu options and the food were excellent. Most portion sizes are petite, although the pizzas can be shared. Something surprising and disappointing was the lack of genuine in house coffee service and desserts. As of my visit, they have no espresso machine on site and where bringing in some deserts from a local bakery. This dampened an otherwise remarkable experience. read more
