So my boyfriend took me here for our anniversary and I've been wanting to try it for a while. We got the maximum course meal, I can't remember the exact number. Of course the sizes are small, but the flavors are exceptional. For me the service is too slow. I know they cook and prepare each dish in the kitchen nice and fresh, but for me, taking almost four hours to eat dinner was way too long. They made some amazing mushroom dishes for me since I don't eat fish/seafood. I loved most of the dishes that were presented in front of me. My boyfriend liked most of his as well. I loved the interior of the restaurant and appreciated the small space. It makes for a more intimate setting. My favorite part was the waiter getting a few keywords about what drinks you like. He then took those to the bartender and he would custom size a drink for you based on those few key words. I'll start by saying the atmosphere & service was 5 star- but over the 7 course meal, I found myself saying " Not my favorite" a few times. For a Meal that is this price tag heavy-$500 for two of us, and only glasses of wine no bottle- I did not think it was worth it. I would head over to Nonesuch for a similar meal where we loved every course. We were also told our glasses of wine were $14 then were charged $18 for them- at that point we weren't going to complain but the meal just didn't warrant that kind of top dollar IMO. I would have preferred more than just a small scoop of ice cream for dessert even though the flavors were good and creative- it just wasn't impressive. Nothing really popped that much in flavor that would entice us to return. Presentation was very nice. Server was friendly, but not sure if very well educated in the courses being presented. Server sat dish down, walked away & when returned he asked us flavor profiles we tasted. We communicated with him what we thought we tasted & he would mumble something then walked away. 50th Anniversary Dinner My wife and I went to Grey Sweater in March as part of our 50th anniversary celebration. From start to finish, the experience was first-class. The staff was professional, attentive, and genuinely focused on making it a special evening. We had the seven-course tasting menu, and every course was excellent. Several dishes were new to us, but each one exceeded our expectations. The flavors were bold, balanced, and beautifully presented. Our daughter wanted to treat us to a nicer dining experience in OKC with James Beard award winning Chef Black. We traditionally prefer an Ala Carte menu but was swayed to go despite only having the Pre Fixe options. We ended up all happy that she chose the 7 course option instead of the 10 as the portions were generous and we were filled. There was an interesting selection of courses and of course, some of us loved a particular dish while others didn't. This is why I prefer selecting our own. I really enjoyed the first courses which were creatively prepared veggies and also the seafood. The meat courses were not as enjoyable but I was happy to taste the creative preparation. I never cared for quail and venison so I would not be a good judge of those dishes. A couple of us had the wine pairing and opted for the Premier wines which were pricier than the whole meal but featured excellent paired wines. If you are a wine connoisseur and like the experience of quality and some rare wines I suggest this option however I am sure the Silver and Gild options were excellent as well. Ambiance was ok. Main dining room had a lot of dead space and had a cold feel and plain walls, while the counter area was a bit more stylish. We opted for the counter area. I agree with all the other negative reviews here. We have had some spectacular tasting menus over the years, and this just isn't one of them. Servers were very knowledgeable and nice, but service was slow for no reason. First course is a cone that took about 30 minutes to get in front of us. The silver wine pairing had some great selections, but for the price I expected more than a sip at a time, which is what it was. On the subject of the wine pairing I thought it was shady that they offered us a red dessert wine at the end of the night, but forgot to state that it was an extra $30 on top of the $200 for what amounted to about half a bottle between us. Food was ok, but small and slow. One bite or two every 30 min means we are likely trying to find food when the "meal" was done. Felt like we were just waiting and waiting between courses and by the time they arrived we were just happy to have anything in front of us. We understand how this process works so I don't need the business rebuttal telling me how a tasting menu is supposed to be. As someone who has only lived in NYC and LA, I was amazed to experience a legitimate fine dining establishment in Oklahoma. Grey Sweater is the work of James Beard Award winning chef, Andrew Black. While the cuisine can be broadly described as "New American", there is ample global influence, and rare, precious ingredients that you will not find anywhere else in this region. Grey Sweater offers a 7 course tasting menu for $137, and a 10 course for $187. Do the 10 course. It was the perfect amount of food. They also offer three different wine pairings: Silver, Gold, and Platinum, for $100, $150, and $300 respectively. We opted for the Gold tier, and were impressed by the overall value, and sommelier's thoughtful selections. The meal was exceptional from start to finish. My only complaint is that unlike most restaurants of this caliber, they do not print you a menu to keep. For this reason, my recollections of each dish are not as accurate as usual. I love having a personalized menu (I keep them forever lol). Stand out dishes included an Osetra caviar topped grilled cheese, an oyster with strawberry snow made with liquid nitrogen, the most delicious scallop I've ever had (served in a passionfruit beurre blanc), and a savory ice cream cone. I do not eat meat, so my main course was a wonderfully spiced corn fritter dish inspired by chef's Jamaican roots. Service was polished and professional yet personable, and the meal was perfectly paced. The open kitchen is sleek and modern; definitely sit at the chef's counter, which is spacious. This is one of the best dining experiences I have had in OKC. It felt like a Michelin star restaurant. Service was on-point, the GM, Michael, was at the helm getting involved with service like a true maître d'. How the chefs managed to cook all of the courses perfectly, for each guest who was on a different course, without uttering a word to one another is shocking to me. The servers were knowledgeable and explained every detail and ingredient as the food was served. It was quiet and relaxing with upbeat music, and I loved it. There's nothing worse than listening to elevator music. We did the 7-course dinner, and I'm glad we did. I was stuffed by the 5th course! We had reservations so they called in advance to ask if we wanted the 5 course, 7 course or 10 course and if we wanted the wine pairing. Wine pairing is an extra cost of $60 per person. We chose the 5 course with the wine pairing. Each course looks amazing. But the portions are tiny. It tastes good but after 5 courses we were still starving!! My biggest disappointment was I did not feel like we got our money's worth. The bill for 2 was $430 and we did not feel full. On top of that, the wines pairing is a rip off. The pours are tiny. If you are deciding between Nonesuch and Grey Sweater, I recommend Nonesuch. I will explain why. Having eaten at Black Walnut several times, and visited the Gilded Acron, I am a Chef Andrew Black fan and was looking forward to this with high expectations! First off, let me start by saying that the food without question at Grey Sweater is stellar, a 5/5. However, agreeing with over reviewers - the portions are SMALL. The first dish was a small but tasty cone, and the second AND third dishes were two small soups. There was 1 scallop (literally one), followed by 1 quail meat and 1 red meat course, ending with ice cream. There were no courses that had multiple parts. I'm sorry, but as a small Asian woman and still hungry after, if we are paying nearly $500 for a 2 person meal, I hope to be rolled out of the restaurant! The wine pairings (silver level) were also great- though it took a little prompting before we were told what was being poured. They are also very small pours - several mL. (Compared to Nonesuch- our shared wine pairing was constantly and generous refilled!) The service was extremely slow, though pleasant and definitely buoyed by great company. Still, our 7 course meal took over 3 hours- I don't know if it was because they were unstaffed that day? We sat at the Chef's table- which I recommend, and there was only 1 waitress serving the 6+ couples. Overall, is Grey Sweater still worth a try? We sat right in front of the chefs preparing our meals. Our server was very welcoming and offered a unique water selection. We were asked what flavors we liked for drinks and the bar created some fun drinks for us. Waitstaff did a tremendous job making us feel welcomed and comfortable. With that said, things started off strong but there were a few glitches. We did appreciate the beautiful plating of the food. However, we kept seeing one of the chef pulling his phone out of his back pocket to text. Which he then continued to start prepping our food without washing his hands. We were APPALLED. We did leave a private message of our experience from open table but got no response. My boyfriend visited 3 times in the past year and said a lot of the menu items were similar to what he had before. One stand out was this savory, creative cone we had as a first course. I'm so happy that there is a restaurant that offers course meals that take into consideration your full senses when you eat. I have a very strong sense of smell and there are certain textures that freak me out while others I find amazing. The gastronomy that Grey Sweater devised for our birthday dinner was amazing. I fell in love with the sommelier. He was so incredibly knowledgeable and knew fun facts about what I was drinking. There are two small criticisms I have, we were still hungry after - all of us, not just the big guy. So we got tacos. I think you could only modestly raise the price and add in another small plate and another dinner plate or just add a little more to the two existing portions. Maybe a super-rich soup that's filling. I've always wanted to try a meal where I do a big bite piece and incorporate an edible flower on it. But a different flower each time and one that goes very specifically with the bite. So many people freak out and think they're decorations but you can create something small that is covered in the perfect flower. The second criticism was that my friend has a serious (carry the pen) allergy to shellfish. So there were a LOT of meals he couldn't eat and he was given alternatives but they were almost exclusively mushroom dishes. There's got to be something with eggs or nonshell fish, or an elegant beef carpaccio, which would be super easy to find the best in Okla because there are so many cow options. There's a lot to play around and I can't wait to see what you're working on when I come home to see my parents for the holidays. It's fine dining that may not be right for everyone. It's expensive and to truly enjoy dropping $150 a person you should enjoy unique food and be adventurous. There's no menu and with some courses you're not told what was in them until after you eat it. I made reservations for Gray Sweater on a Friday night to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. They don't provide a menu which leaves an element of surprise for what dishes will be presented. It's an open kitchen concept, where you can see the chefs cook and prepare the dishes right in front of you. Food -- We opted for the 10 course meal with the basic wine pairing. The presentation was aesthetic, and each bite was a fun palate to unpack. A lot of the dishes we had felt Asian-inspired with the spices used which we loved. The basic wine pairing was a great addition to our meals, and way more than what I was anticipating (enough to get buzzed for sure). We were so full by end the of the 10 courses! Service -- Extraordinary service. They pulled out our chairs when we first entered, switched out plates between meals, folded our napkins when we left, and everything just felt prompt and clean. Not a fan. Have experienced some incredible tasting menus over the years, this unfortunately was not one. Several of the staff were very professional and worked to provide a good experience. Unfortunately, our main server was unfriendly and was irritated by a simple request for a hand towel (no silverware the first four courses). He informed me I had made the request one course too soon. Our fingers were so sticky that it was irritating. Oh well... Where we sat at the chef's counter was extremely hot. Most of the courses were enjoyable but the pigeon missed big. Incredibly salty. Mostly, however, my issue was with the value. I am not a value seeker and love going large on great food experience. The tasting price for the meal was fine. And I feel it was plenty of food. Not so much for the wine. My wife and I selected the platinum pairing. Didn't ask the price but when the meal was done expected to see around $100. It was $300 per person!!! We received the equivalent of a glass and a half of wine. Recognized several of the bottles that ranged retail for $75 to $125. Couple of the pairings weren't a fit with the food as well. Not sure the need for the coravin pour provided they probably go through the pairing picks every night? Guess its for show. Chef Black has really created a beautiful menu and place for himself. The restaurant is more of a hole in the wall location and definitely only somewhere you'd go for a big celebration because the price is no joke. We got the 10 course for $185 each. As far as food goes 10/10 Staffing service 10/10 My one big complaint (and why I give this 4/5 instead of 5/5 stars): when they call you the day before to ask you on your preference of "compliment your meal with either wine, cocktails, or mocktails." Given the high price tag and choice of wording, I assumed it would be included with the meal and was unpleasantly surprised with a MUCH larger bill than I was expecting. They even charged me $32 for water!! I was prepared to pay for a good meal, but it felt deceiving on how everything was done at the end for billing. read more

If you park in the parking garage you take the elevator up to the first floor and you come out in a hallway by Black Walnut We were taken to the bar since we were early and I had a lovely Old Fashioned. Then we were taken to the dining bar. They had called about a week earlier and discussed food with me and did I want a table or to sit at the bar where I could watch the food being made. I opted for the latter. First of all, I must say that they had lovely sauces with everything. Everything was perfection. They started us out with a butternut squash ring with two separate sauces layered and it was amazing. Individually the sauces were good, but the blending of them made it even better. They also had a tiny English pea pod on the squash ring. I'm not even a fan of peas and I ate my pea pod and my bff's (we were there for her birthday). Then they served us New Zealand mackerel and it was delightful. There was a creme fraiche with black caviar and it was delightful. I didn't realize just how lovely mackerel can be. I loved watching them prepare it and putting little pieces of other foods on the food to get just the right presentation and mixture of flavors. Then they brought us out a teeny cloth for us to wipe our hands. They had to warn us not to eat it, because apparently others do. Then they brought us a a U-10 scallop with two lovely sauces (next time I'm recording the dinner so I'll remember everything they say). A U-10 scallop is a large scallop that weighs 1/10 of a pound. So yummy. They cooked it perfectly. For our dinner they brought us out oxtail. It was good if you like cooked meat (I don't, I think all meat should be rare). We both agreed it was our least favorite part of our five course meal. I'm not a fan of roast anything, but it was good if you like this sort of thing. Then they brought us chai ice cream with little pieces of chai and I liked it quite a bit. They have a nice wine menu. I definitely enjoyed the Les Cailloux. This was our first restaurant experience like this and we were blown away by this experience. This meal is an experience. We had the seven course meal and were absolutely in love with each course. We sat in the dining room, our table had the most amazing view of the line. The team at this restaurant moves in perfect concert. It's like watching a ballet. The service staff were absolutely remarkable, Marco and Micheal added so much to each course. The meal that we had was beyond compare. We stayed in the moment and present for each and every course. Phones off for the entire meal, I could not have taken a picture that did the artwork we were able to eat justice. Highly recommend this experience. We look forward to a return visit. read more

I left an earlier review of 1 star which somehow has gone missing but it was time for an update. For context that poor one star was because I missed a single phone call the day before the reservation and because I missed the call, I was not able to select the wine pairing. No one warned me I needed to answer this critical call and I had selected the wine pairing when registering. Go figure. When I complained there was no budging and instead the attitude was one of elitism. That was several years ago. To provide context, we are foodies and have eaten at 1, 2, and 3 star Michelin restaurants and so this is what I gauge all culinary experiences against, more unintentionally than intentionally. At one star, I think: this food and experience was nice. And 2 stars: the food was phenomenal every single time and the service was great and so was the ambiance. At 3 star: it is the way they make you feel. They anticipate your needs. You dropped your fork, someone notices and replaces before you have a chance to even ask sort of thing. You will NOT leave hungry. Now fast forward to last night. My husband decided to surprise us for our 8th year together. I was in good spirits from the surprise but he didn't have the smoothest introduction as he asked for an old fashioned but they didn't have several base whiskeys he was requesting. We made our choices anyway and were given whiskey on ice without a large cube. Apparently they had them but were never offered to us. We proceeded through the courses. The food was amazing! Their take on the grilled cheese is the best I've ever had and their use of root vegetables is inspired. It's obvious the chef knows what he's doing. My husband forgot to say he doesn't like scallops and guess what one of our dishes was lol. Anyway, I thought the flavor was great but even I had issues with the scallop texture because it wasn't pan seared to provide crunchy texture. The dish I couldn't finish was a cucumber based foam dish. It didn't taste like cucumber to me and the foam texture played with my mind. There was also a bird dish and that meat wasn't my favorite but I had a really hard time describing how. I want to say maybe it had a high iron content because it tasted kind of metallic like liver can. I still finished it because it wasn't horrible but when we are paying the prices we are paying, I expect to like ever dish, especially because I love all food and am not a picky eater. I'd rather try something unique and have the chef be creative and possibly not like it then eat a good but cookie cutter preparation, but that's me. The restaurant was too loud, their liquor section sucked and the final bill was the SAME price as a NYC restaurant that was 3 star Michelin restaurant that we went to, so that was disappointing. One of the dishes they brought out had chips in 2 places. Not that I care, but other fine dining restaurants would never have allowed that. They also would have asked if they saw us switching plates to find out what we didn't like and they would have made sure we literally could not have eaten more before we left, even with a prefix menu (we did the 10 course). But the staff were friendly, food was great, food was creative and came out timely. read more

I had the fortune of trying out the culinary spectacle that is Grey Sweater before this current period of lockdown. How we discovered this place was completely by accident. One day, after dining in Black Walnut, we saw multiple well-dressed couples ushered through sliding doors within the restaurant? Could this be some kind of speakeasy? From the outside, Grey Sweater's unassuming exterior made it appear as a fine clothing establishment - but what secrets were hidden behind those sliding doors? After some research and multiple attempts, we were finally able to secure a reservation. From the moment you enter, it's clear that Grey Sweater is much more than a restaurant. They intend to fully control and tailor the entire experience here. The best seating to get here is by the bar, here you are privy to the excellent showcase of skill and craftsmanship in the food prep as well as watch Chef Andrew Black work his magic. As the food is seasonal, your specific dishes will vary, but what we were treated to was nothing short of perfect. Its hard to not draw comparisons to Nonesuch here (a similar type establishment), but while their dishes are not as innovative, Grey Sweater makes up for in sheer execution and quality of the ingredients. Ossetra caviar, sous vide lobster, 46 day aged steak, beautiful sea bream, these ingredients are truly top notch. And while it was intimidating at first, eventually we were able to have a conversation with Chef Black who was quite personable. I would highly recommend this experience if you are in OKC - it is worth every penny! read more

The power of wine unlocks the mind for a fictitious tale according to Chinese scholars of old and new. Here sits I in the middle of three dimensions according to most humans at a crossroads of sorts. Yet, just experiencing for the first time the fourth dimension in the sense of food at this wonderful place. Grey Sweater. Chef Black has exceeded all expectations in what I knew about food. Grey Sweater truly has no allegiance and the food represents the experience of how Chef Black brings that to the table. 10/10 recommend to attend a visual tasty experience to that fourth dimension in the sense of food here in OKC. Our first visit. Unbelievable! It was our 43 anniversary. We had the 10-course dinner. It's was such a wonderful way to celebrate. The pace was just right. It took about 2.5 hours to have all 10 courses, but it was as entertaining as any great event. Waiters were very classy, and took great care of us. We spent time chatting with Chef Black. What a classy guy. Watching Chef Black and his other chefs prepare each dish was so much fun. My wife ate things she's never enjoyed before, and loved it, including an oyster! Mozart on a plate. Seven plates actually. And each bite was an entire symphony in my mouth. I had no idea food COULD taste that good!!! Someone has been QUITE remiss. Where is chef Blacks Michelin star???? I went the day before Thanksgiving with my daughter for her birthday dinner. She said it was the best gift I'd ever given her. We opted for the seven course dinner and next time.... because there WILL be a next time... we're getting the 10. Honestly, we were stuffed after the seven course meal but I will go all old school Roman style and visit the vomitorium just to taste ten of chef Blacks dishes!!! Our tasting menu was primarily pescatorian. We had shrimp, sea bass, caviar, uni and monkfish. The only land based entree was the duck that laid the golden egg. Yes I realize it was actually a goose but if it HAD been a duck I'm sure that's what it would taste like. There were various vegetable courses. And here is where I'm calling chef Black out on the current obesity crisis in America because if HE was cooking America's vegetables we'd all be thin!!! The president really needs to look into this. My vegetable hating daughter darn near licked the plate. Actually we both did. And the SAUCES and the craft COCKTAILS and the SERVICE and why are you still READING THIS???? BOOK your reservation NOW. This restaurant is a special treat and Oklahoma is is fortunate to have the Grey Sweater. As a vegetarian with nut allergies I was super impressed with the ability to accommodate my needs. I came here to celebrate my birthday and it exceeded my expectations. Beautifully tasteful presented food, friendly and professional staff, and wonderfully thought out floor plan.
