Anvil is a one of the only bars in Houston that has a 100 list of classic cocktails. This 100 list is half off during happy hour 2pm- 5:30pm Everyday open from 2pm-2am One of the only bars offering the biggest selection of cocktails. Service is great and it is spacious inside with more than one bathroom. This bar is classy, clean, dark lit, and it gets packed! Stopped by with my friend on Saturday and ended up staying for 3 hours! The space is well decorated and not too loud even though it was busy, which we appreciated. Our bartender Katy got us some water shortly after we took our seats at the bar and came back quickly to take our orders. My friend got the Elevated Rosita and really liked it, while I opted for the Pretty in Pink which was also really good. We ended up getting all of their bar food sides (kettle chips, olives, and nuts) and they were all really good! They accidentally spilled almost half of the olives when bringing them to us so they brought us an extra serving of it later to make up for it. Katy was super nice and gave some great recommendations for drinks, even letting us know when a substitution wouldn't work well (ie not doing tequila in a certain martini). For my last cocktail I asked for a white Negroni and she immediately knew what I was talking about and made it perfectly. I've always said that you can tell a lot about a cocktail bar by asking for a white Negroni. Next time I'm in town I'd love to stop by again and try some more of the menu! read more

I seem to only end up at Anvil pretty late into the evening for "one last drink". They have amazing cocktails and great service. Our bartenders last night were very fast and friendly, and our drinks were AMAZING. My drink was a watermelon rum cocktail that I will probably be thinking about for a long time. I do have to say my one quip with smaller bars does always end up being the noise level, but even with it full and music playing it didn't take away from the experience the way it has in other places. read more

The bar is so cute! I've never seen so many booths, well like 5 or so but still it's nice to have spacious seating area. Plenty of standing area. It was busy for a Friday night. The bartenders were so attentive and noticed when I walked up and immediately got me a menu. When I was ready to order she came back. It was so quick and the drinks were delicious. I loved the variety on the menu. It got even busier so we headed out but definitely added to the list of places to stop by. read more

I think I've officially found my little hideaway in Montrose. Anvil is so sexy at night! The vibe gives cool NYC bar but the servers give very neighborhood bar. I literally had to pull myself away from the bar because I had to go home. This is definitely on my list as a regular spot. read more

I like to pop in here on "off nights" like M-W when it's fairly low key. On the weekends it gets very very crowded & can be a challenge to get a table or bar seating. The mixologists do a great job of making whatever drink you like or recommending a drink based on your description of your preferred drink profile. Its a pretty dark atmosphere. Gotta use your phone to see the menu but they do craft cocktails well. Parking can be a challenge with some spots across the street. They also have valet parking for $10 (at least that's the weekday price) Anvil is a go to bar for me when I want a well balanced craft cocktail. I also really enjoy their sister bar, Refuge, in the back, upstairs when I want a more intimate, upscale vibe. Drinks & talented mixologists are equally wonderful there. read more

Loved this bar! It's pretty jammed inside, with limited seating besides the bar. However, I do love the music that they played and the ambiance was nice. I tried the blended margarita, and it had lime sherbet in it. That was a first for me. I will definitely be back! read more

Love this neighborhood bar in Houston! Their happy hour is excellent, and they're incredibly knowledgeable about their drinks. The menu can be overwhelming, but you really won't be disappointed with whatever you get. Highly recommend the kettle chips and cream cheese dip as a snack! Crunchy and salty in all the best ways. One of my favorite spots and the drinks never disappoint! I have been coming here for years. All of the bar tenders are super friendly and right when you walk in and up to the bar they are always looking out and ready to take your order. Excellent drinks! I visited on my birthday and I'm so glad I did. It wasn't very busy, which nice. We were greeted as soon as we entered and handed a menu and told to order at the bar. I was told this is the best cocktail place in the city. I came here on a weekday night and it was pretty busy. We were able to find seats quickly at the bar. I finally visited Anvil after receiving many rave recommendations from my husband and his friends. I stopped in on a Friday night around 9pm, and the bar was pleasantly full without being crowded. The backdrop of the bar is its extensive liquor shelf which is bright and colorful. There's plenty of room to stand, but if you want to sit I'd recommend arriving earlier to snag a booth. Anvil is a staple in Montrose. While some of the trendy bars come and go in popularity, Anvil remains busy- and for good reason! On a weekend night, it's usually packed. My boyfriend and I recently went on a Thursday early evening and it was still pretty full, but a nice slower pace, where we could hear each other talk. The service is still good on a weekend but even better when they weren't as busy. Our bartender was sweet and funny. We've definitely been there while honoring Dry January and the mocktails are awesome. The cocktails are also always unique and good quality. Impeccable service from bartender Manny. Place was packed and we were hesitant on going in thinking we wouldn't get great service. However, Manny was prompt with service and offering menus as soon as I walked in the door. When seats opened up, he personally introduced himself and shook my hand. I went with a friend for a few drinks to enjoy my first evening in Houston, and the ambiance made for a great first impression. I ordered two Double Windsors, which had my preferred liquor of choice in bourbon. Our drinks came relatively quick and the service checked in on us often, both in ensuring we were satisfied with our drinks and for witty banter. The atmosphere is lively as expected, particularly once it reaches traditional hours when people start going out. There's no formal seating rules, so expect to be on the lookout for seats when arriving (or be ready to stand during more crowded times past 10:00 PM). The Anvil bar was PACKED on the Fri night I went! Definitely a chill bar with most people standing around waiting for seats to open up. Even so, drinks came out relatively quickly and the servers and bartenders were attentive and kind. The ambiance inside is dark yet lively, but there isn't much seating at all - you have to really pay attention to swoop on a seat when it opens! I ended up getting the Family Affair drink - nonalcoholic since this was the last stop in my group's bar hopping night, and it was delicious!. My friends got the Espresso Martini (not very strong) and the Double Windsor (super strong). Ultimately, it was a great time and atmosphere, and I'd definitely come back! read more

anvil bar is a neighborhood staple. the crowd is mixed, but everyone is there for the stellar cocktails the service is definitely on point! i've been a couple of times and i've been greeted and promptly serviced each time. the decor is simple and chic, which plays as a excellent backdrop for the mixed crowd. don't be shy about talking to bartenders and aking them to make something off menu. they are extremely knowledgeable mixologists and i definitely trust their expertise. 10/10 recommend. bonné santé read more

Anvil bar is a long-standing trendy little bar in the Montrose area. The ambiance is lively, the service solid, and the drinks handcrafted There is an Anvil menu you can order from with classical cocktails and a variety of other drinks to order. They have a sizable fully stocked bar with many professional bartenders. Each cocktail is a handcrafted work of art I've never seen Anvil empty. There are always people having a great time. It's not a huge space, so, seating can be limited The bartenders are not the broody hipster bartenders with an attitude. I found the our bartender was incredibly friendly, and the service was great As we entered, the bouncer was talking to patrons in front of us that must have been regulars. I thought at first it was a capacity issue and we (and they) had to wait, but no, we had to wait a few minutes for them to catch up until we had our IDs checked so we could go inside. It would have been nice of them to let us go around Some tips: The Mint Julep is fantastic. Really liked Anvil about 2 years ago but it has changed so much. Overpriced drinks that take forever to get and the absolute rude behavior from the bouncer at the front door. This older couple behind us didn't get let in because the wife forgot her ID in her other purse, the bouncer refused to let her in even tho she looked well in her 40's. They were polite and just walked away, so we decided this wasn't the place for us that night and walk away as well. read more

In typical obnoxious coastal elite fashion, I was ready to lower my cocktail standards in Houston, readily accepting a trip where I'd mostly drink beer. But then everyone started recommending Anvil for a fancy cocktail, and I gave in. We rolled up with our group of 5 on a weekend night, fulling expecting a long wait, but we got lucky and got a round table in short time. The cocktail gods smiled upon us. Drinks wise, I always go for anything with mezcal, and the Las Almas, with the sparkling wine and mezcal was a winner. The Loose Canon also stood out to me because I like any drink made with tamarind. There isn't much to speak of regarding the atmosphere. Exposed brick and christmas string lights remind me of bars that were popular in the 2010s, which is totally fine. It works for Anvil. A little high brow, a little mid brow. Anvil set a good standard for me around Houston's cocktail scene. I would totally go back. read more

A wonderful craft cocktail experience. I love how you can order things off menu such as a New York sour (which I was dying to try). Very attentive and detail oriented bartenders who clearly know their craft. The only thing I don't love is how sometimes you have to fight to get a seat anywhere but I mean it's a great place so it's going to get pretty crowded. read more

BEST BAR VIBES!!!! I love how attentive and friendly the bartenders are, every bar should have a master class at Anvil and learn a thing or two about quality customer service. Come for the drinks stay for the incredible energy. The Sea Isle is a fantastic drink, the mango was great and the rum was perfectly mixed. I also had the champagne cobbler which was good too! What makes anvil such an iconic Houston bar is that they are so dang consistent!! The hardest part is to keep the hype up going and they do it well by keeping the drinks delicious with an ever changing menu. Loved the new pandan drink! We ordered several tapas and one large plate half order. I don't know much about wine, personally, but the drinks we did get were amazing. The restaurant itself was very pretty as well, lots of natural lighting and then low lighting as the sun went down. The music was low and we were able to hear each other well, apart from one group across the room that would get rowdy but I can't blame them for having a good time. Our food was all delicious and I forgot to take pics of some of them because we devoured them so quickly. Not pictured, we ordered the grilled asparagus and focaccia. I highly recommend all of what we ordered.

We had reservations for brunch, and our party of six was seated immediately on the beautiful second floor. The Brussels were cooked very well and had an excellent crispy texture, but I felt the kung pao vinaigrette lacked the bold flavor I was expecting. A little more sweetness and acidity would have helped brighten the dish and make it more memorable. The hummus, on the other hand, pleasantly surprised me. Both the red beet hummus and edamame hummus were flavorful and enjoyable. They paired well with the crisp flatbread and even served as a nice accompaniment to some of our less exciting entrées. For my meal, I ordered the marinated artichoke pizza, which unfortunately did not stand out. I had the same issue that I experienced during my previous visit: the crust was simply too thick and chewy. After a few slices, my jaw was genuinely getting tired from all the chewing. The pizza also could have benefited from more bacon and a more generous amount of sauce, as it came across a bit dry overall. The campanelle suffered from a similar problem. While I understand that simplicity was likely the goal, the dish was so understated that it ended up feeling bland. It tasted like a slightly elevated version of buttered pasta with just a hint of white wine. There was nothing particularly wrong with it, but it lacked the depth of flavor needed to make it memorable. On a much more positive note, the carrot cake pancakes were easily the star of the meal. I tend to gravitate toward savory breakfasts, but my sister was eager to try them, and I am so glad she did. These were not your typical pancakes. They were thick, fluffy, and incredibly soft in the center. With toppings like maple butter, maple cream, mascarpone whip, candied walnuts, and cardamom sugar, I expected the dish to be overwhelmingly sweet. Surprisingly, everything was balanced quite well. While I cannot imagine finishing an entire plate by myself, anyone with a sweet tooth would absolutely love them. Overall, this restaurant continues to impress me with its atmosphere, service, and a few standout dishes, but the entrées I have tried have not lived up to the hype. If I were to return, I would happily order the hummus and carrot cake pancakes again, but I would probably skip the pizza and pasta in favor of trying something new.

They do charge extra for the prosciutto cut. The jam that comes on the board is her favorite and it's delicious. We chatted with each other and with some gentleman that said they were regulars there. I experienced this side of the business during the early phase of the Covid pandemic back in 2020. At the time, during lockdown, going to a wine bar or wine shop just wasn't top of mind. However, I had researched a Cabernet Franc (red wine) called Nicolas Reau Enlèvement Demandé Anjou [Vintage year: 2017]. Reau is kind of a rebel working in the Loire Valley of France who is interested in producing organic, biodynamic wines that are essentially closer to nature and processed differently--more artisanal, so to speak. I read about this wine and wanted to find a bottle locally, which wasn't an easy task as I recall. This is where Vinology comes in. I'm not much of a wine drinker, but had to have a bottle of this excellent wine. Like many people, I preferred to stay indoors during the early part of the pandemic and was kind of nervous about going out. When I called Vinology, I expressed my dilemma, and the guy on the other end of the phone came up with a great solution. He offered to deliver the bottle of wine I purchased to my address. I actually met him at the edge of the garage entrance to where I live. This was great, exceptional above and beyond service. I will always treasure and remember Vinology and plan to support the business more in the future. Hats off to the folks who own and run this wine establishment.

We started out with the Babylonstoren, a chenin blanc from South Africa. We then moved into pink (rose) with the Ana Beirut - a blend of cab sauv, syrah, and tempranillo grapes with a bit of skin contact to give the wine the pink color. Lastly we ordered the Guelbenzu - a red blend of tempranillo, cab sauv, syrah, and graciano. This full-bodied red was the absolute fan favorite of the table. Food options are on the light side: meat & cheese boards, bread, and small bites. We started out with the warm bread - while it's normally served with butter, there's an option to switch that out with olive oil & herbs which is what we did. We then went for the meat & cheese platter. We couldn't decide on which meats or cheeses, so we did the option of ordering all 8! This came with 4 delicious meats and 4 tasty cheeses (from Houston Dairymaids), also with crispy fava beans, olives, pickles, and bread. This was a good amount for our group of 4 to share.
