I've been to Perusa a couple of times and it's always a delight and the service is great. Today started with the Choros a la Chalaca which was so delicious. The flavors are so fresh, I would definitely recommend! I forgot to take a picture but we also got the ocopa arequipeña. It wasn't bad but it wasn't WOW, so I would probably skip next time. We all shared the jalea mixto which was also really great! There is a good variety of seafood and the green sauce is amazing. The Chicha was perfect, we always end up ordering another craft since it's so good! We ended with the Piacarones (5 come in an order). Brand: 5/5 The font and the color scheme has a vivacious appeal as part of the Latin American restaurant aesthetics. The font varies, yet retains a level of consistency. I also like the recurring symbols of the Nazca lines throughout the brand's aesthetics. Indeed, the brand effuses the history and culture of Peru from Macchu Pichu to the present. The management hopes to provide a valuable lesson to the rest of the community in terms of introducing them to typical Peruvian cuisine. The website also details a poignant backstory behind the owner's childhood and the meals Perusa offers. Ambiance: 5/5 The establishment had large enough space for multiple tables, and it was not noisy in any way. I liked how the menus had a leather exterior. There was a section of the establishment that had a stage for a band to play, which I can imagine must provide life to Perusa. I appreciated the television showing Peruvian news, immersing you into the Peruvian life. Service: 5/5 We experienced no issues with the staff. While the staff did forget my water, they did come by to ask if I needed anything. Wait Time: 5/5 We did not experience any interruptions with the wait time. Food: 4/5 I ordered the Tamales de Cerdo (or Pork Tamales), which consists of corn dough stuffed with pork and hot sauce. I never had tamales before, so I did try to introduce myself to it. The packed meat inside definitely had the heartiness and spiciness that did not break the form of the wrap. The tamales was accompanied by a side of lettuce, onions, and tomato bits. While I did find the meal pleasant and tolerable enough, I did encounter a pit. I confess that I did not finish it because I never had Peruvian cuisine before and was not sure whether I was supposed to eat the surface of the tamale. Worth The Money?: 3/5 Upon viewing the menu items on the website, I can say that the establishment has a high price. The food, however, represent Peru with positivity and homeliness, for they reflect the country in a way that an outsider would understand. The food's preparedness matched the wait time perfectly. Coupling with the food, I definitely felt that sense of cultural immersion that every Latin American restaurant hopes to evoke. The Peruvian news would be important if you were trying to learn to speak the Spanish language and needed to immerse yourself in some way in the language. News channels use formal speech that leaves little to no room for misunderstanding, making it easy to learn Spanish. It did not feel intrusive, yet can evoke curiosity in the sense of trying to figure out the words you learned in the past. If people were already familiar with Peruvian life and cuisine, then I would say that Perusa would be worth the price. However, a lot of people in America, pertaining to the Hispanosphere, have more familiarity with Mexican and Puerto Rican life and cuisine than Peruvian. As such, if I were to offer recommendations, it would be to include smaller dishes at cheaper prices (especially highly sought after dishes), in order to acclimate people to Peruvian cuisine. The half chicken was juicy and flavorful, the fries were perfectly crispy, and the salad was super fresh. My wife ordered the grilled steak. The steak was so tough, my wife was literally unable to swallow it. I received a bowl full of shellfish. Service: Terrible. After spitting out the bite of steak my wife couldn't swallow, she moved her dish to the edge of the table. I did the same with my ceviche I couldn't eat. Ordered the quarter chicken and chaufa rice and it was AWESOME. So for $17, at first I thought it was a little pricey, BUT THEN I SAW RHE PORTIONS. They came out with this giant piece of perfectly cooked chicken that was so big and delicious that my leftovers didn't fit in the box with my leftover rice. My partner lost his mind over how good the leftover rice was when I brought the rest home. I didn't have a lot of time to enjoy my meal because I had to rush back to work and I told my waitress this and she made sure everything came out quickly for me. It's so funny how things work out. I drove by Perusa with a co-worker. He pointed it out and said "I heard the food is good there but the service is really slow". We walked in, the place is decorated nice, there was about 12 tables, a couple of beverage coolers and a counter. They had a TV with traditional Peruvian and family pics playing along w some music. The menu had traditional Peruvian dishes. We decided to order the pulpo ceviche appetizer. My wife ordered the grilled chicken cutlet which came with with rice and a salad. I ordered steak a la pobre which is a wonderful dish with grilled steak, 2 fried eggs, rice, French fries and hot dogs. I was concerned with what my coworker had said regarding the slow service so I timed it, in addition, by this point all the tables had filled.. The food came out 20 min later, which was fine. The only complaint was the brought the appetizer and entrees out together. The pulpo ceviche was delicious. Cold pieces of octopus in a vinegary brine with sliced onions and very thinly sliced habanero was just enough to numb ur lips. Then a 1/2 a cold boiled sweet potato offset the spice. Also in the dish was the large kernels of Peruvian corn. I could've eaten this dish by itself and been content. My wife's dish looked good with the grilled chicken and rice. She said it was super tasty. My dish was amazing. The eggs and steak were cooked perfect. The French fries was delicious. We really enjoyed the food and had plenty leftover for a doggie bag. Stopped in for lunch on a weekday. I heard about this place from a few guys on a job site. They said the food was great and nice size portions and quick service. They were right! I walked in and asked the friendly young lady at the counter what she recommended. I ended up with a platter that had a 1/2 of a chicken, small salad, generous portion of rice and a pile of fresh cut fries. The chicken was super tender and cooked perfectly! Rice was moist and had a great flavor. The salad dressing was light and fresh and tasty. The fresh cut fries were hot and crispy, not soggy. All in all, it was a very positive experience. Daughter and wanted to try something new. Waitress seated us and when she came to take our orders we asked for water and she returned with two bottles of water. We weren't familiar with the offerings. I ordered Tacu-Tacu Perusa which sounded like some kind of rice and beans dish. After a long wait, about 15 minutes, the waitress brought my daughter a large bowl of mostly rice with a sparse amount of what looked like spaghetti mixed in. More than 10 minutes later she returned with my dish which looked like a small pot of rice turned upside down in the plate, enough for 4 servings and what looked like two egg rolls cut in half with some chicken in the middle. The egg rolls were deep fried, way overcooked and impossible to cut with a table knife. Not a bean in the whole meal! My daughter after a while asked for the check. We were charged $6.00 for 2 bottles of Poland Spring water and an 18% service charge was added. $67.23 with Service Charge and Tax. The waitress never returned to our table to ask if everything was ok or if we needed anything else. Never again. We could have had a much more enjoyable meal at McDonalds, say a Big Mac and fries for 1/4 of the price in 1/4 of the time. Poorest service I've ever had in a restaurant. I had the opportunity to check out Perusa today. I took a friend of mine there for lunch. When we pulled up at about 2pm the parking mist was empty. Now we had both read about some iffy reviews but we were both foodies and said you know what " this is not going to be our last meal" so let's give it a shot. The interior was clean and could seat about 30 guests. The waiter was cordial but spoke limited English. We were looking over the menu and noticed they were bringing food to an adjourning table. I stood up to take a look. He had ceviche and another plate of beef hearts. It was prepared beautifully. He said he comes twice a month. So I ordered the ceviche minus the tilapia. I don't eat farm raised tilapia. My friend ordered the half of roasted chicken. Well everything was delicious. The shrimp were large and the octopus was great. I went to this place tonight with my husband and son. We've never had Peruvian food, so we decided to try something new. The presentation as we saw each plate brought out to tables around us was really impressive. We both loved our meals (he got the steak with eggs/rice/fries/plantains) and I got the steamed fish (sudado levantador). I loved the flavor of the broth. It had fish, shrimp, mussels, tomatoes, and onion in an orange-colored broth. I'd definitely like to go there again to try out different items on the menu. The only downside is that I guess they only had bottled water, so we had to pay for our water. But the food was reasonably priced, so it's not a big deal. read more

I'm very impressed. We live in North Jersey and came down to visit my mom. I wasn't expecting anything great but we were starving. My step father is Peruvian and I've eaten Peruvian food my entire life and let me tell you, I'm impressed. The lomo meat was tender, the sauce was flavorful, the fries were hand cut and delicious. The papa la huancaina , again absolutely delicious. I usually only like my moms but these were amazing. The chicken? My 3 year old NEVER eats meat and he destroyed a drumstick to the bone.
