EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED. 5 STARS BECAUSE EVERYONE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS. We arrived at 8:00 AM today at August 13th 2025 for my dog's scheduled surgery, and by 2:39 PM, we were still waiting with no clear or honest update from anyone on staff. This isn't the first time. On August 5th 2025, we had the same experience during my dog's MRI appointment. The staff gave us the exact same excuse: "the previous patient's procedure is taking longer than expected." Both times, they claimed they "just found out" about the delay but after it happened again today, it's obvious that excuse is complete nonsense. If this really keeps happening, it's not a one-time delay. it's a scheduling failure. We were told surgery was about to happen at 2:30 PM, even though earlier we were told it was "ideal" to start at 8:00 AM sharp. Their explanations contradict each other, and no one takes ownership of the issue. This is why we schedule ahead of time to avoid exactly this kind of situation. Yet we were left waiting for over 6 hours with no communication, no transparency, and zero respect for our time or our pet's well-being. If you choose to bring your pet here, make sure they schedule only your dog for the day or be prepared to wait all day and be fed excuses. Also we had surgery on 8-20-2025 and surgery was unsuccessful due to vain being really close to where they needed to remove the disc. Yes but don't they suppose to know that already? Idk why they suggested surgery then if they knew the veins were all over the spine area. And they charged us $9865.50 for unsuccessful surgery. Their excuse was it's better than your dog being paralyzed and further injured. But his words also contradict because when we went to here what exactly happened, he said he would actually take this surgery further if my dog was paralyzed. I still do not understand the whole process why this surgery was necessary when the results is just they opened him up and basically lost blood from surgery and they closed it up. I wish I can upload all the video footage of vet explaining to us. The more you listen to it . It doesn't make sense.

    SnowFlake, Our buddy, our pal.

Brought my boy cat in for a life determining evaluation. I had used another location once before for another animal and miracles abounded at that time so figured I give them another go in hopes for another miracle. Well, my boy cat "Snowflake" was sicker than we thought, and although there was no nailing what exactly he was dying from, his red blood cells were single digit and not rebounding. Money was not discussed until the odds of expensive treatments making a lasting life extension for him being slim to none, only then did money come up as an item, which I could bear if need be, but blood transfusing and expensive liver tests et al, would not guarantee his survival especially for the 24hrs he most likely had left to live. I researched for days, all week in fact, for a place to just get him to, in my area on the south side of the beltway, but it wasnt until the snowstorm that I thought I'd go north to this ER. The place is highly efficient, like a shock trauma center, and they ran my guy through a heck of a regimen of triage. I'd recommend getting insurance for your animal as if I had insurance like I did the one dog I took there once, perhaps we would have been able to take the extra chance , but then again he had about 24 hours of time left which I whole heartedly agree, AND the cat was suffering. My cat was suffering and really losing his face shape and everything as he widdled away. I believe it could have been an aggressive cancer since he went downhill so fast, perhaps 3 weeks to a month. So while I come to grips with myself on taking so long to get him proper care, my wife and I are thankful to have had him, enjoyed his antics, and we really lost a friend today. rest in peace my good friend and enjoy playing over the other side of that rainbow bridge you crossed today. To the doctor and staff, thank you so very much. I just regret not knowing for sure what it was, but your diligence and attention today was among the best I could have asked for. Incredible team. Just incredible.

My 9-year-old whippet who was a very healthy and happy boy, became very ill on a Sunday night, showing lethargy, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, shivering, decreased alertness, confusion, fever, protein found in his urine, and low platelets when we arrived at the ER. He had a history of mild heart disease and a murmur which had been evaluated 8months prior and was not concerning. Upon arrival, I informed Dr. Miller about his dumpy condition his health status. I told her that I suspected an infection. She insisted it was congestive heart failure or endocarditis urging us to leave him overnight for tests. Her bedside manner was pushy, we couldn't even get a word in and she didn't listen to our concerns. The next day, we faced a $4,800 bill with unchanged cardiac results and no answers why our dog was sick. They couldn't schedule an abdominal ultrasound without another overnight stay, and the vet on-call was rude. Our dog was prescribed antibiotics for endocarditis, even though the cardiologist at their facility indicated his symptoms were not heart-related at all. I expressed concerns about a possible infection many times, but no pathogen screening options were ever provided. The vet suggested switching antibiotics but ultimately left him on the same one to treat endocarditis. When we picked him up, he was not in good condition even though they stated on his discharge that he perked back up. He was stumbling, could hardly walk and appeared very sick and confused. We were reassured by the vet tech he was fine and that painkillers had been administered. We were told the antibiotics would treat any infection and to follow up with our Primary Car vet in 48-72 hours. We spent the next few days believing our dog was being treated properly, but by Friday when I could finally be seen by my primary care vet, he was critically ill with stage 5 kidney failure. We had to euthanize him after being in intensive care for a week at another ER (which costs us $12,000). He was diagnosed with acute kidney injury, elevated liver enzymes, and very high probability of leptospirosis. Several doctors at this ER are known experts in Leptospirosis and told us he was a textbook case. Our dog suffered a horrible and premature death spanning over two weeks due to inadequate care at Pet+ER. The vet tech told us information that wasn't accurate upon discharge. After discharge, we had to return because they left stitches in the side of his face. Our dogs' medical records were never discussed or sent to us. No one from Pet+ER followed up with us to see how our dog was doing the next day or to have any other discussions. They never diagnosed his condition but prescribed medication for endocarditis. Their cardiologist point blank told us his symptoms were not related to the heart. They dumped the responsibility on my primary care vet. Our primary care suspected Lepto or addisions immediately before even running labs. We were given false information and inadequate care by Pet+ER throughout the whole process. Pet+ER should be ashamed of the service they provided and the suffering our animal had to endure. I will be taking my case to the state veterinary board and also seeking legal advice.

Service:5 Stars Pricing: 2 Stars…read more This past weekend, I had a very positive experience at VEG that was overshadowed by what appears to have been sheer greed. We brought our goldendoodle to VEG because he cut his paw; the laceration split one of the digits on his paw, with superficial flesh exposure. It wasn't the worst wound in the world, but bleeding persisted and it was deep enough that we needed to determine whether stitches may be needed. Dr. Forte and the technicians (I'm so sorry I did not get their names) were just amazing. And Sarah, who did our intake, was uncommonly kind and attentive. I had absolutely zero complaints with the staff. My sole complaint was with the pricing of a pain medication. I understand that emergency treatment is not inexpensive; it's just the nature of the beast. Still, when the Dr. said the total came to $400 for the exam, cleansing/bandaging of the wound and medication, I was a bit surprised so asked for a rough breakdown. The culprit, in my view, was a common, canine, pain medication, with which I was familiar. The cost was $93 for 14 pills. I asked the doctor if we could purchase it elsewhere and she said we could. When I filled the prescription at a grocery store pharmacy, I was shocked and then angered by what I learned. The prescription, for which VEG was charging $93, was $9.99 at my local Giant pharmacy. I could not believe (and still do not) a reasonable justification would exist for such an excessive medication markup. Surely, I thought, this chain hospital has access to preferred/wholesale pricing. Parasitic was the word that came to mind. I saw a business exploiting people already experiencing stress and vulnerability as the result of a beloved pet's sickness or injury. Although I was very pleased with the service we received, I am just very disappointed and troubled by this issue, to say the least. Certainly, this is not unheard of in the society in which we live. But VEG ownership/management, I feel you do a great disservice to the excellent employees who, clearly, work so hard to represent you in the best and highest light. With respect, do better...

From the second I walked in all attention was on MY BABY'S Care!! I ended up having to say good bye to my baby (turned out he had a very serious issue) and even that horrible experience was made a little better because of staff. The care and treatment that was shown reminded me of the old days when vets cared about the animals (sick patients) and people (usually distraught and scared) they saw, and not how it seems now a days when you and your animal are treated with no more concern/ care/ value/ compassion than you are treated at the grocery store in a check out line. VEG claims to be dedicated to making the animals care and the people's care the FOCUS, and my experience was just that!

One thing that really stood out was the strong communication -- they kept me informed, answered questions clearly, and made sure I understood everything along the way. The services are definitely on the pricey side, which may be difficult for some people to manage, but the quality of the staff and their professionalism helped make the experience worthwhile. It's clear that the team cares about providing good service and supporting their clients as best as possible.

Ok Yelp... I'm frustrated…read more We rushed our 9-month-old Cavapoo into VRA Pet Hospital at 8:45 AM after waking up to him bleeding from his rectum, after already having diarrhea and vomiting the day before. As pet parents, that's terrifying. It is now 12:37 PM and we are STILL sitting here waiting for a doctor to tell us what's wrong with our baby. The only explanation we kept getting? "Other emergencies came in." I understand emergencies happen... but what exactly qualifies as urgent if a puppy is bleeding, lethargic, and clearly in pain? Our dog has been laying around miserable, not himself at all, and we've had to repeatedly get up and ask when he'll be seen. Meanwhile, hearing laughing and casual conversations at the front desk while your pet is suffering is beyond aggravating. The lack of urgency, communication, and compassion in a moment like this is unacceptable. I hate that this has been our experience because when your pet is sick, time matters. Right now, I'm just left wondering... where are the better emergency animal hospitals in the DMV?! Here's a more detailed and pointed update for Yelp that leans harder into the front-desk failure while still separating it from the doctor's care: Update: I want to be fair because the doctor deserves recognition. Once we were finally seen, she was excellent -- thorough, compassionate, and took the time to explain everything clearly. She even apologized for the lack of communication, which says a lot about her professionalism. But my issue remains with the front desk staff, and honestly, that part of this experience was unacceptable. As first-time pet owners rushing into an emergency with our 9-month-old puppy bleeding, vomiting, and clearly in pain, we walked in terrified. No one at the front explained the ER process, triage, or what to realistically expect. Instead, we were left sitting there for hours in complete uncertainty, repeatedly having to get up and ask for updates ourselves. Every time we asked, it felt brushed off with the same generic "there were other emergencies" response -- with no timeline, no compassion, no reassurance. What made it worse was the atmosphere at the front desk. While we were panicking and watching our puppy lay there weak and uncomfortable, the front desk felt more like a social gathering than an emergency hospital. There was laughing, chatting, snacking, and carrying on while families sat in distress. That lack of urgency and empathy was hard to stomach. No one expects immediate service in an ER, but basic human compassion and communication should never be optional. When people bring their pets into an emergency hospital, they are bringing family. The front desk is the first point of contact, and that first interaction sets the tone. In our case, it made an already traumatic situation feel even more isolating and frustrating. The medical team may have done their job, but the front-end experience failed us completely.

Mason Dixon was next on the list. They took my dog right away and the wait was not too awfully long once we were in the room. It was discovered via X-ray and blood work that my dog has congestive heart failure (caused from the inadequacies of a previous vet). Although they were thorough in their tests and findings, their suggestions are the reason I am not rating them well. They provided me two options - one being leave my dog for a few days so they could put her on oxygen and medicate her at the cost of 5k. The other option was to put her down right then and there. As I live approximately one hour away and did not want to just put her down without my family I told them I was taking her home. I felt as if they were trying to make me feel guilty for wanting to take my pet home. They stated that taking her home would be hard on her and that if she passed at home, it would be traumatic for the animal. They stated that she would probably not make it through the night. I stuck to my guns and said I was taking MY animal home. I am so happy I did! The following day she was seen by my regular vet, who stated that although the dog does have CHF, she would have never suggested putting her down the night before. She said there are medications to try and that my dog is not as bad as she could be. She reviewed all the materials send from Mason Dixon, and felt that there could have been some other options presented. I am so happy that I listened to my gut and took my girl home with me. Don't let someone talk you into something you don't feel is right in your heart. My girl now has a second chance at being around a little longer because of the due diligence of our wonderful vet at home!
