II recently got my first Puppy and since Pet Fun is close to home I wanted to check it out. I've been there a couple times now the first time was for food and essentials, the second time was for flea medicine and both times Nichole was so helpful and answered all my questions. So I've always shopped at Petsmart - for prices mostly. But my old kitty is allergic to her food - so i had to locate some special food for her. this took me to petco - because their food selection was better (but oh man,the prices were hurting me). So now I was shopping at both places, one in seaside(cat litter, fish needs), one in monterey(cat food) ... well we were wandering around Salinas when we found Pet Fun! I was just going to run in and see what they had - but what i found was that they had the type of food i was purchasing for my cat - at nearly half the price - as well as many other options which she would be able to eat. The also sell live tubiflex worms - which i can't find anywhere around here... their staff is excellent and friendly, and their prices are quite a relief. Great service, good prices, and healthy fish- it doesn't get better than that! xxx So, I meandered in here by chance over a year ago, and bought the most gorgeous solid black Beta fish. A year later, Severus is healthy and happy, so Pet Fun was at the top of my hit list after we set up a 75 gallon saltwater reef. I called ahead over the weekend to find they just had gotten a shipment of fish! While we were looking to pick up a clown, I still made the drive from seaside out to see the new fisks. Just as before, their beta stock is UNBELIEVABLE. Seriously, if you have no self control beware! All beautiful, well lit and cared for. Probably the best looking beta stock I have ever seen. They have a decent amount of saltwater tanks set up, with a really great variety utilizing the space. They had your regular damsels and tomato clowns, but amix with more unusuals like the mandarin, sweet lips, and a gorgeous red lionfish. Even larger mature fish like a lovely 4" raccoon butterfly. To my excitement, they had in the new shipment both the beautiful coral beauty, AND flame Dwarf Angels! They don't try to up sell you, which is refreshing- being a new saltwater aquarist, the fish specialist recommended starting with the more inexpensive coral beauty, to ensure I could care for it and get it eating, over risking the more expensive flame angel. Aside from fish, they have an awesome selection for clean up crews with basic and unusual species, and their turbo snail stock right now is INCREDIBLE! Hearty, healthy biggins, I snagged an almost 2 incher that has the most beautiful coralline algae started on his shell. I also took a second camel shrimp, at the specialist suggestion as I mentioned my home camel was very skittish and seemed not too set in to his surroundings. A second was suggested to help naturalize my current shrimplette. (It worked!) I happily headed home with the Coral Beauty, the jumbo turbo, and camel. Now, it might be my care in acclimating our angel, but the health of the fish is also outstanding. To our amazement, the beauty hid for about ten minutes in a rock overhang, and then took to the open water, exploring his new big home and taking excited laps in the 125 gallon-ready power heads. Over he next two days he feasted on mysis shrimp readily, even braved a kelp clip once of twice. Our clown fish, while much lazier, seemed to love having a second fish finally! I found myself wishing I had gotten the flame- they were in the same small fish shop tank together without aggression issues, and also the same size which is so important to reduce aggression. I called to see if he was still available, and they kindly held the fish for two days until I could make the drive down. I also nabbed a huge red leg hermit, again with beautiful coralline on his shell! Our flame has been in-tank approximately 2 hours now, and just as the first is already exploring every rock crevasse, and seems to be already extremely happy! Overall, great service and pricing, helpful staff and clean store- everything you could ask for in a fish shop! Suffice to say it is well worth making a 40 minute drive, and we will happily return to Pet Fun for our special orders as our tank matures! Thankyou everyone at PF! read more

I usually don't leave very positive reviews unless I am really impressed by the service. I have heard good things about this store from friends. So I went first thing Sunday morning when they open. When I walked in it was a little overwhelming how big this store was for being a local business. I then saw an employee but some crazy lady was yelling about how there website says they opened at 9 which I thought was funny because I looked it up before coming and it said 10. She just yelling at the guy and all I could think was wow poor guy. I just stood off to the side and waited for the yelling lady to finish. The lady walked away to the back and the employee saw me standing there and asked if I needed any help. I told him I was sorry to bother him after having to go through that last conversation. He said it's part of the job how can I help you. I told him I have a dog with a very sensitive stomach and is allergic to fish. Is there any food that they have that I can get to make absolutely sure that there is no fish in it. He said they have several options and walked me over to show me the food. I was then able to see his name tag. It said Aki. He then showed me a few different foods and recommended one that didn't have fish and had probiotics which he said should help the stomach. Aki also told me about their food guarantee so if my baby didn't like it I could bring it back and try something else. I asked Aki about treats again telling him my worries about having fish in it. He then walked me over and showed me several different kinds. They had like 4 aisles of treats. I then asked about toys I wanted something durable because my baby plays and chews rough. Aki then took me over to their toy section and showed me there tough toys he also recommended some tire toys and showed me rope toys. I told him thank you I am going to need some time to make up my mind because they have so much to choose from. He asked me if I had anything else I had questions about. I told him he was more than helpful. I was so impressed how much time Aki spent with me to it had to at least be more than 15 minutes. When I left I asked the lady at the register if they had a compliment form. She told me no but I could leave a note or I could just go on Yelp and leave a compliment. I told my friends about this place and the service. They told me yeah they know why didn't I know about them they have been around forever. Way better than a doctor's visit you go in tell them your problem and they show you solutions with a smile. read more

They greet everyone at the door. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Cashiers could be friendlier though. If they don't have something in stock, they're happy to special order for you and hold it until you can get into the store. They have a variety of clothes and accessories for dogs and cats (more than Petsmart). Their prices are affordable and they often have sales. I go here mostly for bird food and toys. They have a good selection of bird products. Their cages are bigger and cheaper than Petsmarts. I recommend you sign up for their "club" where they send you emails. Their weekly deals are on Wednesdays, make sure to check your email. Their fish department is great too, although their warranty is only for a day. This is a family owned business. You'll find things here that you can't normally find at Petsmart or Petco. read more

I really like this place. They have a great selection of good quality dog food including lots of grain-free options at different price points. Staff have always been helpful and friendly to me. They are located in a strip center near other shopping but it's pretty easy to get in and out without getting bogged down in too much traffic. Prices may be a little higher than Amazon, but not always and I really like that it's a locally-owned business rather than a big corporation. read more

2 stars for the supplies and being the only spot in Salinas that actually has saltwater fish available but there's a dude in the fish section never stops asking if you need help and pretty much always rushes past you some fish are crazy over priced they aren't too good at species identifying dude thought a pistol shrimp was a sexy shrimp then tried saying it's a Harley Quinn shrimp so you'll pay the ran-domes price and I always find a dead fish or two in the tank almost all the fish I got from them killed each other so I lost 80$ of fish to one coral banded shrimp they sold me it's a ok spot I'd still drive to San jo for my fish tho got a hermit and it died within the week never came out his shell same with a emerald crab woke up found her flipped on its back 2 stars not my go to spot they just carry the lion fish I want at this point read more

This is one of the largest pet stores in the Monterey County. However, this is the only one with good selection of both saltwater and freshwater fish, invertebrates and even coral. They are a little pricey but you won't find this wide selection somewhere else. They have a good loyal customer program. Recommendable. read more

I recommend not purchasing from this store. They refused to let us purchase an animal for an elderly confined person to their home. Explained the situation and was dealing with a supervisor. This place has better prices for your cat or dog food needs. They sell Science Diet and California Natural for $2-$3 cheaper than Pet Smart or Petco. The only thing that was annoying was the staff were talking about unencessary stuff ie. cell phone, personal issues around customers. But they have great prices there and if you have an aquarium and need fish they have tons to choose from. Definately go here and support this local business as since Home Depot closed there customers have decreased. read more

This store use to have a lot of problems with diseased tanks, and lackluster upkeep in the fish department. I recently went in after about 6+ months, and the fish room has done a complete 180. There was not one tank with ick. The tanks looked great, the fish looked happy, and the new selection of fish was really unexpected. I found some nice Hillstream loaches, yo-yo loaches, and even apistogrammas! The plants also look great as well. Much improved from the past. If you have not been here in a while because of what you saw here in the past, you really need to come in. The new fish manager Ashley has really turned around this fish room. She's extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and truly cares about what she's doing. The owner of this store found gold hiring her. Please keep listening to her, whoever you are owner person. She knows what she's doing. If you're a fish nerd, and haven't been here for a while, give it another chance. You will not be disappointed. read more

Overall a relatively large and well-stocked pet store. Ok selection of dog and cat stuff, small selection of small pet stuff, and an aquarium section. The freshwater fish section seemed to be about average but the saltwater section was seriously lacking. Dying fish in almost every tank. The employee I asked about this seemed unperterbed and stated that the goldfish tank has a lot more dead in it. What can I say? I also noticed a particular lack of attention to which breeds of fish were being kept together and in which tank environment. An example is a pair of Dragonettes in a sparse tank (these are reef feeders and are certainly starving in that tank.) If you're a salt tank owner I'd suggest looking elsewhere. My impression is that this is a busIness which is more interested in the money than the animals. read more

We have been there a couple of times and the 1st time the person who helped us was not so friendly. He was rude, seemed mad, it made us feel like we were not welcomed at the store. This second time the person who helped us in the fish section was very nice and helpful. But once we went to pay the cashier was rude. To our surprise it was the same male person who helped us last time. He acted the same way; rude, his way of talking to us was of a person who disliked us, seemed mad or not happy to be there nor helping us. He wasn't very courteous. My husband and I took out 9 year old daughter here to get a bunny over the weekend on Saturday and she fell in love with a black & white bunny. The sign on the glass said bunnies are not for sale until May 24th (tomorrow) because they are "in quarantine and very young" so I offered to pre-pay but the sales lady said they don't do that for legal reasons "if you pay for your bunny now, it's legally yours and we cannot take care of it in case anything should happen to it." So we said that's ok, we'll come back on the 24th at the opening of the store and purchase the bunny. Well, today, I went in the store a day before the bunny went on sale to buy the cage, bedding, and food... and to my surprise, there was a sign on the glass that said "Black & White Bunny SOLD" with a receipt taped next to it. I was shocked. I called a staff member and she said a manager approved the sale. I explained to her what the sales lady told us on Saturday, that my daughter's heart will be broken and that she already gave the bunny a name... but they didn't care. I will NEVER shop here and will tell EVERYONE what happened. It's so wrong. The manager should stick to the rules!!! read more

We walked in around 12:20 pm on a Tuesday Feb 4th I was hoping to purchase some things to go in my boyfriends salt aquarium , I had 250.00 cash we walked back to the salt water tanks an gentleman was assisting a customer and never asking us if he could get someone to assist us he just kept giving a gal an salt aquarium class she would ask a general question and he would drag it out with info that she could never understand. Now common sense would say you at least especially when customers are standing within 2 feet of you and know what they want ask the lady if he had no one else to call to help us and 35 minutes later, needless to say we took our cash to O.A. And received great service and probably healthier specimens. Never will we go back!! read more

This has the friendliest staff of all pet stores. If you need to know anything about fish or quality pet foods I recommend you giving this store a shot. I met an employee there Estaban. This young man knew so much about fish it was quit impressive. Far better help for me and my son than any employee at Petsmart. I also had problems with my cat and they recommended a premium cat food Science Diet at comparable prices! We purchase Science Diet Products recommended by our Vet and they had everything I needed at this location. I give it 2 thumbs up. Plus, I would rather support local businesses within our community rather than Chain Stores. You should think about that prior to your purchase! read more
