One may think a pet store is a pet store, but that isn't the case with this one. They have a great rewards program. My little fur babies are spoiled rotten. They require a specific brand of food (Nitro). This place carries it and usually has great deals on it. Also after 10 bags of purchased you get a free bag. FREE BAG! That is a $30-$60 savings depending on the lbs and the flavor my lil spoiled demon dogs wish to have that week. I LOVE IT! I will always go here and get my puppy foods. They also carry birds, lizards and fish. You think of anything you need for any type of pet, they have it. If you are in the area of Nich road and have a moment or two to kill, hop on in here and see what all they have. The isles are usually clean. Wow!! Have to say I was impressed with the amount of DEAD fish that were stuck to the filters in the gold fish tank and a few other tanks. Maybe three to five live shrimp crawling over the ones that were dead underneath them. My friend and I were hoping to purchase a few but after seeing the conditions of them and the cloudiness of the water in the beta bowls we promptly decided NOT to purchase anything from here. I will say that the staff seemed friendly enough, greeting us and making sure we were helped accordingly. I didn't want to point out to them the conditions of the fish because I feel like if you work there and see them every day that you could clearly see what I saw my first time in that store. I also understand things happen and you can't always catch things immediately but there were several goldfish in various stages of decomposition being sucked into the filter of their tank. There were bones in the pebbles on the bottom. That tells me that they had not been tended to or properly cleaned in, I would guess, several months. Maybe we caught them at a bad time, I don't know but hopefully this is something that can be changed for future customers. read more

My family went to Pet Supermarket to add some fish to the family. The store does an outstanding job for cleanliness. Many pet stores have an odor to them but this store stand above the rest in being very clean. The staff was also very helpful in helping us find the fish and tank that would best suit our needs. They were able to instruct us about the fishes care and helped us make a choice that was sensible for our family. We will definitely shop here again. read more

A wide variety of products at a really good price, I got my guinea pig for only $22 while most stores charge $30 or more. But, as a large chain, they seem to be prone to not caring as much about the welfare of their animals. For instance, all the guinea pigs (both male and female) were housed together, so there was a lot of fighting and reproducing going on while I was picking out the one I wanted. When I tried to tell the cashier about it, he just sort of brushed me off without really taking what I said into consideration. read more

Tried to buy a bird today They wouldn't sell it because an employee was going to buy it. I asked if they would order me one and they replied not until this one is moved out and asked me if I tried MVP pet store. I called corporate to see if they would order me one and the girl said I will call you back.........still waiting one day later They used to be a good store but are obviously following in the Sears foot steps since the buy out! read more

It's an OK place for getting pet supplies. Their cat litter prices are one of the best in town. The pet food prices, in most cases, seem to run 150% to 200% of the prices of other places I go. I will say, though, that they usually have the brand or type I'm looking for, even when other places have run out. I do get A LOT of creature food and supplies, so I'm familiar with many of the places they're sold in Central Ky. Overall, this place is one of the best. It's always clean. The staff is (a bit too?) very friendly. The bulk pricing is a bit strange, so ask before you get bulk or buy after seeing the bulk prices. I've been shocked after arriving at the register, more than once. The location is very convenient, with access from Nicholasville road and Lowery lane.... which gets you from southland, regency, malibu, and an easy jog from Harrodsburg road or new circle road. I stopped by this location to see if they had any different small animal offerings - I'm always on the lookout for new toys and treats. They did not have very much to offer at all, which was somewhat disappointing. What really drove me to review this place, though, was the selection of live pets. All of the animal tanks (save for the ferret tank) were completely open, which is an extreme no-no for hamsters. I'm assuming the stress of having strange people poking at them all day is what caused a good number of the hamsters to have thin, patchy coats. There seemed to be absolutely no division of sex, just breed. Worse, the tanks absolutely, positively reeked of urine. I'm not sure how often the employees are required to clean the tanks, but from the smell of it, they're not doing it often enough. Needless to say, I will not shop with this chain at any time. Sad selection aside, their treatment of the animals in their store was simply deplorable. read more

I come here to get my reptile supplies in the way of the occasional hide, UTH, sure, but especially for feeders. The staff includes people -mad- knowledgeable about not just cats or hamsters, but reptiles and their care as much as any dog, bird, or rabbit. The frozen-thawed items for obligate carnivores are well priced and in good condition. Had an in-depth conversation with one individual about the pros and cons of Antaresia pythons, which I was not expecting at all but thoroughly enjoyed. I came to Pet Supermarket for the first time today. I simply needed to pick up a bag of Hill's Science Diet Puppy Formula. I normally go to Pet Valu (I love them there!) but they didn't have the puppy formula, only adult. So that brought me to Pet Supermarket. I was greeted by an employee who asked me if I needed any help finding anything. I simply asked if he could show me where in the store the Hill's Science dog food was. He immediately launched into a lecture about how "shitty" that brand is, and tried to steer me away from buying it. Two more employees descended upon me and criticized my choice in dog food and told me to buy a different brand (a brand which has recently been investigated as being possibly connected to DCM--canine heart disease). I politely but curtly told them I wasn't looking for advice, I simply needed to buy the dog food my vet has recommended for my dog, and the food I feel most comfortable feeding. The employee then told me my vet has "likely only taken one canine nutrition course" and he has taken nine. I'm sorry, but I'm trusting my vet and my own research over a self righteous, minimum wage employee at a pet store. This store just lost my business with how rudely they spoke to me. I just wanted to stop in really quick for a bag of food, not receive a lecture and be insulted. read more

Prices are about average, and employees friendly. HOWEVER they sell SICK animals and house them poorly. I purchased a bird here that I later found out was riddled with congenital diseases and spent several hundred dollars on her health until she passed away. I was/am absolutely devastated and when I asked where these birds come from all they could say was from Florida. Obviously they are not getting them from healthy, responsible breeders. They keep all their small animals in cedar shavings which is TERRIBLE for their health and causes respiratory issues. Their amphibians and reptiles are unclean and the hermit crab habitat was filled with feces and smelled like something had died in there. I emailed the company and got an Oh well sorry about your experience reply. I checked in recently and they still have not changed the bedding they use. I will NOT buy any animal from here again. I still will buy pet food because of the price but with the exception of their Woodstock kittens, avoid purchasing a pet here unless you want to be heartbroken with a $1000+ vet bill and a dead animal. read more
