Overall, a wonderful store. Very clean and well maintained. You can truly tell that it is locally owned and well kept. On the flip side, I think it comes down to the employees, front of store, wonderful, sweet, always welcoming you into the store. Now for the back of the store not so much, I was going down isles, looking for what I needed, and for what I would assume would be the dog trainer of this store is absolutely awful. For the time I spent in that store, I hear the F work and the B word come out of her mouth, she speaks extremely loudly, and there was info about her childhood. Personally, if I was an owner I would have a meeting set up ASAP to go over store attitude policies. Overall, from what I've heard the owner is spectacular, I would just hope that he would want his employees to carry the same time attitude and pride that he does for his store. I'm highly pleased with the staff, the variety of things needed to support my dog. She also likes wandering the aisles, probably thinking what snacks is he going to buy me. Negative experience I brought my dog here on Friday evening, 5/24/2024. The groomer was "gone to lunch" but the other employees didn't know when they would return. After about 30 minutes, a different employee told us that they were gone for the day. We returned the next day, Saturday morning, 5/25/2025. The groomers were there. The two older white ladies greeted us and our dogs and took one dog back to the table. One of the ladies said they were new or training, or that the lady that was actually trimming/grinding the nails was new. Very soon that was evident. As she was grooming, the first dog (yorkie), he kept moving. She was not very patient with him. It took the other lady trying to hold him down, for him to get his nails trimmed. You know when you hold a dog down sometimes they squirm even more. So that is what he did. He squirmed so much that he came out of his collar. When the second dog, my dog (beagle mix), went to get her nails trimmed, and we walked away to talk. A couple of seconds after we walked away my dog started yelping. My dog is very quiet and does not yelp and rarely barks. When I walked back, I saw the lady with the grinder bending my dog's leg back at a weird angle. My dog kept snatching her leg away. The lady kept moving it in ways that were not ergonomic or natural. My dog was whimpering the whole time. The other lady that was holding my dog even stated to the lady that you can't hold the dog's leg out like that. I also made a comment that the angle that she was holding my dog leg was probably hurting her. I think the grinder lady was getting upset because she was patting my dog really hard, I guess in an attempt to soothe her. (Side note: I also noticed that when the lady was grinding my dog's nails, she was coming at the nail from the top. I've seen other grinders start from the bottom of the nail and go up; going to the tip of the nail, avoiding the quick and then smoothing out the sides, left and right.) When she was done, my dog got down and ran to me seemingly for comfort. The lady that was holding the dogs down told us to have a nice day. We paid and left. Afterwards, we were looking at their nails, all nails were different lengths and not smoothed out. The nails on my dog's front feet were still very long, especially the middle nails. In general, the nails on both dogs were still long. We took them to Petsmart today to have their nails trimmed properly. read more

I bought 5 fish and the employees mentioned they had recently had fish with ich so I had a bottle of ich treatment in my hand and the assistant manager says don't buy that. I wasn't very familiar with ich and the assistant manager stating the tanks had been treated recently so I didn't buy it. She did go to the very end of the isle and state she saw a fish with ich on it but said since it's in one of those tanks it couldn't infect the ones I was about to purchase. Within 2-3 days one fish died. A week later the other four died. They were covered in ich. I called the manager and he says that ich is always present on all fish and lies dormant till stress or poor water quality creates an outbreak and that maybe true in their tanks but not all fish has ich. Ive researched this since and to best of my knowledge Ich is a parasite that cannot survive without a host and my tank was a newly cycled tank that had no fish in it prior to making a poor decision. Good try buddy but no way my tank had ich and my tank created the problem. Doesn't fly with me. He said they sold 1000 fish over the weekend and nobody else has complained. Another good try to discredit the fact that I did not purchase healthy fish. I don't know their procedures but if you study the life cycle of ich by adding new fish every week to existing tanks with ich even if treated does not ensure the newly added fish will not become infected. Ich medicine does not treat the fully developed ich parasite once it's encapsulated. The tanks actually need to be quarantined for a time and treated multiple times along with the fish to ensure all the ich in all stages are eliminated. So a week and a half after I bought the fish the store sold a 1000 fish in a weekend. Four of mine did not show signs of ich for a week and half but by the time you can visibly see yet ich the fish are very sick. So when mine were literally dying they were still selling fish. Why sell fish that have been exposed to ick recently and then try and make the customer feel like it's somehow their fault. The customer feels bad enough after watching 5 fish die, $60 down the drain and starting all over again. My best guess is it's still profitable even if you give refunds to customers that realize the issue or don't give refunds and redirect blame on customers who are not extremely educated on fish. After leaving this review the manager calls me and leaves a message saying during our conversation I interrupted him several times and must of misunderstood him. He says I bullied his employees and what I stated on the review was false. Not false and I did not misunderstand him. Bullied? If anyone was bullied it was me! I called twice to speak with a manager and was told to call back the next day. At that time i told the employees about the ich. Was that bullying? It's ok to ask their assistance in purchasing but not to question them after the purchase. That's bullying. He ask me to call him back and he would refund me as he stated before. He will not be receiving a call back especially after being called a bully and all the bs that went with along with this purchase. I will be purchasing a 20 glofish variety on Amazon for $99 rather than spending $60 on five that were dead within a week and half. Amazon's reviews were good on that seller and I read reviews. I had glo fish that lived for two years. I went out if town and someone flipped the switch on the wall that controlled the outlet and the pump stopped working so the fish died. His refunding me doesn't forego the fact that I have to recycle my tank and start all over. I'll do without the refund because if I did go back there I'm not sure the treatment I receive will be positive. The night I purchased the fish the cashier was very hateful and said we are trying to close. I said what time is it and she stated 8:54 pm. Well excuse me but it wasn't 9pm yet. If you want customers out by 8:54pm change your hours. Just a bad experience all the way around. Maybe they need to educate themselves and rethink their policy and procedures on maintaining and selling healthy fish. Without ich. read more

This is by far the best pet store in Athens. The people that work there are very knowledgeable. That's big! If you want to know anything about fish keeping, this is the place. Now, if you feed your dog high-end dog food ,this is a good place for that too, because being a member will save you money. That's the bottom line. I don't know how to rate them, but when I was in yesterday the poor dogs being groomed would shriek in pain and cry uncontrollably from fear of what was being done to them. The sounds went all over the store and customers were concerned. That is not the caring experience I would subject my dog to from groomers wearing earphones and hacking on dogs. read more

The store usually had what I'm looking for in terms of supplies. We have been extremely happy with Brody, the store's groomer. He has groomed our husky many times and that's a challenge. Brody's work has been great. I saw another review complaining about a dog howling while being groomed here. I have watched Brody groom our dog and many others. He is great with them. Some dogs howl anything. It is unfair to Brody to complain without more details. We've certainly never seen any problems over the years. read more

Nice clean store. Tons to chose from. The problem is at the register. I was there this morning and made a purchase. I tried to pay with a hundred dollar bill. Change became a problem so I dug in my pockets and found a fifty, that wasn't gonig to work either,, I offered a credit card, NO, I scrounged for 20 a couple ones and change, NO. The two 2 girls' solution felt it was better for them to hand me 49 ones and 5 fives. Not the best solution, I'll not return. read more

Athens doesn't offer a wide selection of anything. That being said ... This is the one place that has been close, convenient and sells the specific dog food that I need. Then? There's the "self service dog bathing". I've tried it several times, as an alternative to using my bath tub or outside with a hose. It costs $9 to wash your dog. They provide shampoo, conditioner, towels, and a blow dryer. The shampoo and conditioner are horrible. The towels are a nice feature. So? This last visit? I brought my own shampoo and conditioner. I figured it was still worth the $9 for the towels, hot water (as opposed to the garden hose) and blow dryer. There was no hot water and the blow dryer is "broken". I was told that there was no hot water because the water heater is "small". So? Does that mean ... If you drop your dog off to be groomed, they are tortured with freezing cold water? I paid $9 for some fresh towels and received an apology from the girl at the cash register. I won't be coming back. I look forward to PetSmart opening in Athens soon. read more

Stopped in to buy some dog food a (a brand which the web site carries) and toys for new puppy. I actually drove several miles to pick up this brand. Walked into the store 5 employees were at the front of the store (2 looked to be restocking or resetting the dog food). I was not greeted or a may I help you, and I was the only customer. I said hello and they all looked at each other...I asked do you carry Fromm brand of dog food, one of the youger employees came me and said no they did not. Hmmm, I said the web site said they did and I had called the day before. Note 4 other employees are around. She says hey do we carry Fromm, one employee says yea down the aisle... I looked up thinking one of them would take me down the aisle ....Nope. I had to ask could you show me please. She did finally walk me down the aisle and they were out of stok on most varieties. So I asked if she carried a specific kind. Nope, I asked if they had samples maybe I could try a different kind, whenever get samples. Said thank you and said I would stop back in when their truck came to try a smaller back of a flavor that was out of stock. As I was leaving I asked out Kong toys for dogs, yeas over there down that aisle, no assistance.. Remember I'm the only person in the store. I just wanted some assistance from someone to help me with a new puppy and offer suggestions. I walked our without buying anything all due to customer service. As a recent transplant to Athens, I found myself searching for a store that carried the specialty food that my English Bulldog has to eat. I found pet supplies plus and haven't looked back. They always have stock in the food that I need and the one time they didn't, they called me when it came back in stock. I love the self serve dog wash in the back of the store for when my bully is in need of a touch up!! You cannot beat the price they charge and it sure as heck is better than having to call out a plumber to snake the drain from a dog hair clog. I used the grooming service a few weeks ago since I was running short on time and he was MAGNIFICENT!!!!!!! My dog has never been so clean and has never smelled so good. His white was white and his hair was shiny! I whole heartedly recommend Brody. As a matter of fact, as soon as I'm done writing this I'm going to call to get him an appt! Love this store. They are always helpful and caring. I am a bit (more than a bit) of a spaz and they are always very patient with my questions. The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts was because the prices aren't always competitive. They are usually more expensive than the other big box pet stores, but sometimes having a good experience is worth the extra few dollars. read more

I love PSP and do pretty much all of my animal needs shopping there (I have 1 dog, 2 cats, and 2 fish). They sell high end good dog and cat food at reasonable prices (meaning you can't buy it on-line any cheaper). I buy my dog Merrick and they carry all the flavors. It doesn't smell like a pet store and it is clean like a grocery store, so I feel comfortable taking my dog in there. The staff is really nice and generally helpful, but I think sometimes they get sidetracked and forget you are there. They are generally quick to apologize for this. They also carry professional brand flea and tick meds (Frontline, Advantix, Advantage) behind the counter at a reasonable price. Never again will I give them my money or time, I'm so disappointed and hurt, the cashiers are so rude, One woman ignored me when I needed help even after saying "ma'am" 4x then a very attractive blonde woman cut in front of me and the cashiers reassured me it wasn't the end of the world???? Then the pretty woman said the cashiers told her that she could actually be serviced when I was in fact next in line. So first they ignore me, then they ignore the line trailing behind me and service a woman who literally ran to the cashier from isle 2. Then one guy cashier mutters "it's not the end of the world" obviously annoyed at my audacity of speaking up. They all ganged up on being rude to me! Pet Supplies Plus is my favorite store for pet supplies - food, toys, shampoo, crates, beds, dishes, leashes, collars, etc.. They are well-stocked with a nice selection and have great prices. The staff is friendly and helpful. We recently adopted a dog during one of their Saturday adopt-a-pet events. She's been a wonderful addition to our family and has enjoyed everything we bought for her from PSP. read more

Not your typical dog or cat pet store, this is a fantastic place to shop if you've other pets. They have ferrets, rabbits, fish, and even hermit crab products. They've a very wide variety of products as well, not just typical food and toys. Not to mention they appear to make their own pet snacks. If I had a dog, I'd personally stop by and pick up a treat for my dog while shopping. It's very clean and well organized as well! read more

I just had my dog groomed at the 191 Aps Rd. store in Athens and had a difficult time checking out. I wasn't told by the clerk that the manager on duty had to ring up my bill that I had received from the groomer instead she directed me to the other side of the counter and left me waiting. After I inquired what was the hold up she phoned the on duty manager and he came out to help. After I got home I tried to reach the groomer by phone and was left waiting again and never was able to get through to explain my dissatisfaction with their checkout procedure. They must not have a direct extension to the groomers place of work, and if they do the person that answered the phone must not no how to wring her up. It is no wonder they don't get more business and have one of the best groomers in town quite and go somewhere else. I used to frequent the PSP location near where I used to live at in Alabama. Now that I'm back home in Athens, I figured that I'd try the PSP location here since the service at Petsmart is subpar. I have been dealing with Brody a long time.The care he does with animals is great. With 4 or 5 rescue dogs that I have at a time he makes the time for them.Many may not like the nail trims or never had them done Brody talks with them and calms them down. Shopping locally-owned is important to me. Katie, the store manager, is around and dependable. I tend to show up at late hours and her staff or herself never made me feel like I was bothering (and I am the question- type...). I recommend shopping there and asking specific questions on food brands to your local person (Katie and her staff). You need to pay first before you bathe your dog. They give you towels after you pay. You then walk to the back of the store and get started. There were 2 different types of shampoo and a conditioner and you can set the temperature at whatever you want. There was no place to put the towels so they went on the floor. There is a ramp you can use so your dog will walk into the metal tub and there is a fastener to attach to their collar if you need that. There is a dryer you can use but I chose not to. There are just 2 tubs. I took my Lab and she was $8.99. Not sure if it's a one fee for all dogs. There isn't an apron to use which would be helpful, nor was there any kind of scrubber. Gave it 4 out of 5 because of no place to put your things or towels and no apron or fur scrubber. But the price, you can't beat. read more

We got two guinea pigs from here. The first became ill and passed away within two weeks, and now we think the second one is pregnant (which means I'll have to be finding homes for them soon). They did, however, give us a new one after the first one passed away, and they carry a good selection of guinea pig food (although a lot of it is filler/fatty). Oxbow was recommended by my veterinarian, so they've been eating that. read more

After coming in for 3 days in a row and seeing the P. imperator with a bone dry water dish and a sponge in the dish. It cant drink water with the sponge in it. and they need water present at ALL times. there were two in the cage but even after i told them they will eat eachother, no changes. now theres only one they tell me... Ive had enough, these people know nothing of their animals, no more than you would with 30 secs of google. this is not okay, I was also sold a Chinese water dragon from this store about 2 years ago, the guy ( i remember exactly who, they still work here and like to think they are good at their job) who sold me the animal and its enclosure ensured me it was an adult and it wouldn't get any bigger and only live about a year or two. wrong, unless 12" is equivalent to 2 1/2'. and 1-2 years is 15 years and of course i had to go to an actual shop and rake out another 200 for an enclosure that actually fit. The only reason anyone has made a purchase in the last 6 months on critters was to get them out of the death trap they had them in. DO YOUR RESEARCH, OR STOP BUYING ANIMALS YOU KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT. I still drive 1.5 hours to give the groomer, Brody my business. He is an excellent dog groomer and I love being able to give him my pitiful attempts at instructions and he always does an amazing job with my border collie and golden doodle. I have been loving this PSP for 7 years strong! read more

Yesterday was my first visit to Pet Supplies Plus and, even though it is a long way from home, it will be our new pet food store. We are so much closer to the local PetSmart, but they do not carry (nor do they seem to care to because I have asked all the way up the corporate food chain) Natural Balance pet foods. The prices here are comparable to what we pay at the Petco we were using, but honestly, this store is SO nice to be in. The store is clean and good-smelling and that is saying a lot for a pet store. They have all the cat and dog food varieties we use and seem to have a good selection of treats and toys, too. We walked around the store a bit to get a feel for it and noticed that we could watch their groomer through a small window. Taped to that window was a little blurb titled "Meet our Groomer" with all her info on it. Quite impressive. Next to that area is a do-it-yourself pet washing station. For $8.95 you can save yourself a load of mess at home and wash your dog here, use their shampoo and towels, and walk out with a sweet-smelling pet. I guarantee our daughter will be using that for her dog often. As we were checking out with our load of cat and dog foods, the cashier asked if we had a store card. We did not, but got one at her suggestion since the brand of pet foods we use is one where if we buy 10 bags in a year we get one free. Oh yeah! I am all over that one. We can do that easily. Give these guys a try. Just my opinion, but the are in the lead over the other "big two" stores for price, cleanliness, friendly knowledgeable staff, and I love that pet washing station! read more

I come from a PetSmart store town, but I have to say that Pet Supplies Plus compares pretty favorably. Yeah, it's smaller, but they pack in the good products (including my cats' preferred kitty litter and lots of cat toys). Weekends are full of adopt-a-thons, complete with super-cute puppies and kittens. The staff seem experienced at adopting out cats/dogs to good homes (i.e., you will be quizzed on where you live and how you will take care of the pet). I'm always up for a visit to see the mice and rats running around, and the ferrets doing their ferrety things. Definitely pay it a visit, and bring your doggie if he wants to hang out with the cool kids. : ) read more
