Edgar is the BEST dog trainer ever. My dog had previously gone to PetSmart for training and it was horrible and we were taught nothing. TL;DR - dog training is no longer available at this location. Needs more staff. Grooming sucked. The store as a store is fine. I do think they need more staff to be able to help customers. You can easily wait 15-20 minutes for someone to help you in the fish department because there's only one person on the floor handling questions and the register. They do have a decent selection of dog treats so I do find myself coming back, but I think I prefer Popcorn Pawz on Riverdale Ave. over this place. Side note - the grooming sucked too. My dog came out still wet and visibly still shedding even though I paid extra for the de-shedding treatment. My primary complaint is the dog training. I purchased the full package - level 1, level 2 and the AKC Canine Good Citizen certification. We started dog training around October 2015 and finished end of November. Puppy 1 with Yvonne went without a hitch - Yvonne was a great trainer and made training my dog simple to understand and easy to do. Once my dog graduated Puppy 1, we were told we would receive a call when Puppy 2 was beginning. Puppy 2 started March 2016 with Yvonne and Jasmine. Yvonne ends up leaving and Jasmine takes over. Jasmine was okay, but I think she was overwhelmed with the amount of classes she had to do and the lack of space this Petco has. Training was either done in the back of the store by the bathrooms or on the far right by the dry food which made training bigger dogs more difficult. Our 'graduation date' kept getting pushed back, but it finally happened on 5/28/16. I was told that Yvonne would come back to help moderate the certification exam with Jasmine and I would receive a call. From 5/28/16 - November 2016 I kept texting Jasmine for an update on when this would be happening. At first she was responsive and apologized for the delay, but then I was receiving no responses. Also, GOD FORBID you have to call them. I called multiple times and was either on hold for extremely long periods of time, or hung up on, or the person who answered could not help me or give me a straight answer. Finally last week, I was told the location no longer offered dog training, they have no trainer available, Jasmine left without notice and now I need to hunt down the store manager to get a refund. The least they could've done is called out to the clients that paid for these classes to let them know what happened as a courtesy. I really wanted my dog to get this certification and now I not only have to look elsewhere, but I doubt any dog training school will perform the exam without me buying another class or two. read more

The newly opened Petco in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx is not worth the dog shit that is supposed to go into the dog shit bags that they sell. In a recent (and LAST) visit to this Petco, I had the unpleasant of dealing with a young man with glasses who's name begins with an A. A for Asshole, I'm assuming. When he very rudely handled my transaction, I asked for a manager (that's when Asshole started being nice) but it was too late. Too bad the manager NEVER CAME TO THE FRONT to listen to what I had to say. I see where Asshole gets his bravado / total and complete lack of respect for female customers. Anyhow, I repeated the story to friends and family who live in Riverdale and they all agree we will take our business to PetSmart in Yonkers. read more

I have been in contact with Petco Corporate a few times about this location in the Bronx. 193 West 237 Street. I keep being told that someone will get in contact with me NO ONE DOES. The store is dirty, no stock, no care about animals. My friend went in and wanted some information about something about her puppy. She told me that no one could help her. The Manager doesn't care about the animals or the customers. It is not welcoming. His name is Carlos. The animal care manager, Crystal, if you are not a man she ignores you. This place is a waste of great space. Very unapproachable staff of one that did not want to help the only customer that was in the store (me). Every question was answered with short nasty reply and when I asked where a product was I was sent on a wild goose chase. Smh. If I didn't desperately need the treatment for my sick cat....I surely would have walked out. Oh and as I was on my wild goose chase I noticed a bunch of dead fish floating in the some of the tanks and a bunch of boxes in every aisle. This place is dirty. read more

I waited over two weeks to get an appointment for my dog to be groomed. I received a call this morning, half hour before his scheduled appointment to let me know the groomer called out sick. This is the 3rd time this has happened to me. They claim I will receive a call back to reschedule for this week. I know people get sick however, they are corporate stores so why can't they get someone from another store to cover for that sick person or have a backup. Additionally, the prices you get on the website goes up tremendously once you are in the store. An employee at the E Gun Hill Road store told me "Well everyone pays it" "The website is not for this store as every store is different" Another employee added, "why didn't you go to the other store you usually go to" The grooming manager, Johanna who came out to speak to me called another employee over to stand by her as she answered my questions. Then proceeded to let me know she had to run cause she had a dog i the sink in the back. You can't make this stuff up people. This is price gouging at its best. Wake it people in the Bronx call your representatives and consumer affairs and stop this nonsense. The absolute WORST! read more

I made an appointment at this location and they gave me 9:00am. The next day, I arrived few mins early and decided to wait until 9. There was 1 employee waiting next door and told me the person who was supposed to open was a bit late. I left and came back and 10 mins later, at 9:58am, someone finally came in... After waiting inside for about 20 mins, when someone finally attend us, they told us a regular bath will cost us 59dls. That was it! I refused to pay doble with all the inconveniences and walked out of there at 10:35 only to make another appt at the Petco in Yonkers, which cost me $20 bucks! Try to avoid this location. read more

I just encountered the worst human in the world and unfortunately she is a manager here and her name is Crystal. The store was closing and she was screaming at everyone that wanted to go inside. I spoke to a couple people that were leaving, and I told them please buy this for my dog the manager won't let me in, they did not want to, they said that the manager was screaming at them and didn't want to deal with her anymore. Why is she a manager here if she has no sympathy for animals, my dog has had hotspots for days and I needed to get him a cone so he can stop biting himself. Thankfully one of the employees came, I told him what my dog had and he told me run and get it fast. I was so thankful. When the manager saw me inside she started screaming and ranting why are people coming inside. Instead of trying to help get out the store faster. The stores closes at 8pm and I was trying to go in at 7pm!! So sad she is a manager here. So sad her employees care more, so sad people like her have control. But I'm so thankful that employee let me in. My dog really needed it. I will give 4 stars only because I was grateful the employee did let me go inside. Maybe he should be the manager. I really like this Petco. It's large and has a huge selection of everything, clean, and the staff is very friendly. My 1 complaint is that the cashiers are rarely at the register, so the reviews that mention that are correct, but I also shop at Petco in the evening, like after 7:30, so the store is empty and the cashiers are usually also stocking up items during this time. I just go up to a worker and tell them I'm ready to pay and someone is immediately available, so it's really not that bad. I also get my maltese trained weekly at this store and the trainer, Yvonne, is amazing. My dog adores her and her positive reinforcement class has done a great job at training my dog. Overall, I shop at this Petco all the time and it's great. read more

Just tried to take my dogs in for their vaccine renewals. This place is completely disorganized. Theres no signs or anything indicating where you need to go for vet services. I asked at the registers and they told me "in the back". After wandering vaguely to the back, I did find it in the back corner wedged between two isles. There was an elderly man off to the side who looked like he was checking people in on an iPad so I asked him where I needed to check in. He asked If I got shots yet, and I said no, I needed to check in. He pointed to the line of people waiting int he back isle for the vet and said I needed to get in that line first. Didn't make sense, but I followed his direction. 45 minutes later, I get up to the vet who says I needed to check-in first. I told them that guy instructed me to come here first... They called over "Oren" and asked if he sent me over here first. His reply was "I'm just trying to check everyone in. I don't know!" They told him to check me in next, and then told me to come right back up front and they'd help me next. So I followed Oren back over and he looks at me and tells me to get in line! I reminded him the vets JUST said to check in with him next because I had already been waiting all morning, and he pointed to the end of his line, and said I needed to get in line and then proceeded to turn his back on me and started checking in the next person in his line. Needless to say I stormed out and will never return. read more

I like this Petco. It's clean and offers a good selection of dog items. I use their grooming services and am very happy with the work they do. I used Popcorn Pawz before and wasn't happy with their service. I definitely recommend Petco. read more

Also their grooming salon is absolutely great, the head manager in the grooming salon is fabulous, professional and always leaves my Dallas looking great. the groomers DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET to this store for grooming. they are ghetto! . they do not know how to read piece of paper. you walk into the store and the store smell like if they were smoking weed. its disgusting they are not professional with the clientele. This location has rude customer service. After they messed up my dogs hair cuts that they look awful they had the goal to charge over 200 dollars. My dogs nails were not trimmed and hair was not properly cut. The store manager wouldn't provide a partial refund. There groomers are poorly trained to deal with dogs and how to properly cut their hair. Awful store and never returning. Didn't have a good experience especially after my dogs are not recognizable of their original selves. read more

This was the worst experience ever in the grooming department! The woman who worked on our shitsu/Maltese mixed dogs didn't even bother to do the nails on all of their paws! Who only does 3 feet of an animal that has 4 feet? All I asked for was a 1/4" cut with a teddy bear face. Also threw in, please make them look the same. The woman says, well I'm a professional hair groomer and I could do a (insert insanity here) cut. I said, No thank you, just the basics will be fine for now and we can try something more intense the next time. I said this because this is the first time my dogs had met her. When I came to pick them up, I was immediately upset, however, i tried to keep it cool. Then I started to notice more and more. The older dog (5 years) didn't even have her face washed. For $68?! Anyone who knows these types of dogs knows that you have to stay on top of the eye gook. Her face wasn't washed. Instead of doing something about it, they taught me how clean her face myself. Uhm, ok, then why did I bring her here if I have to go home and wash her? The list goes on. Never going back! read more

Great location Horrible service and items are never in stock.This store is super convenient for me due to its location its better than having to go to 96 street from inwood but that is the only "pro" this store has . Ive been to this store around 5 times each with an unpleasant experience. The first time i needed a small frozen feeder rat for my ball python the store did not have any in stock but I dismissed it being that the store had only been open for a few days and might have not gotten all their stock yet so i settled for two adult mice. Second time They did not have the rats in the freezer after about 10 minutes of looking for a sales associate to ask if they had any "in the back" or wherever they keep the rest of theyre stock i finally found one and they went and handed me what seemed to me like wet bag not what you would expect from a bag thats supposed to feel like a popsicle with a rat in it.the associate stated that was the only one he could find and i took it cause my snake gots to eat.when i get home and start to thaw it out I realised its smells way worse than it should be smelling upon further investigation the rat was semi rotting and torn in different bits and pieces it kinda felt like when u let a piece of meat thaw before cooking then change your mind after its done thawing and you just stick it back in the freezer. it was horrible and stank up my house for two days straight. i had to wait three days after that ordeal to be able to feed my snake. unfortunately due to my work schedule i usually don't have time to go to the other pet stores because they close pretty early. Third time I came to the store they had no frozen rats no adult mice and only had one mouse in stock which was a tiny little squirt id guess it was a juvenile not like a pinkie or a fuzzy.I bought it cause i really had no other option. fourth time only thing they had in stock as far as frozen rats went were medium sized ones my ball python was not at that size yet but again due to my work schedule this is the only pet store that stays open past 8pm on a sunday night. so i settled for the medium rat which left a huge lump on my little guy guess that made up for the small mouse i gave him the week prior. 5th time it took me 30 minutes on the dot to find a sales associate willing to help me. to get two live mice due to not having frozen rats in stock.after the 30 minute wait the sales associate made me wait more while he looked for the manager with the key for the mice cages this took another 20 minutes and then he had to look for another box for the mice which took 5 more minutes.the whole instore experience took a little bit more than an hour.i really wish i could say im exaggerating the time but im am so serious i put the timer on my phone just for kicks due to the fact that i've had long waits to get a sales associate before. Today i called the store and it took me three attempts to get someone on the line and asked if they had any 40 gallon tanks in stock because its time to upgrade my baby's tank and they don't have it so as i finish this post i am getting ready to go to the 96 street store and buy the tank. p.s. the only reason i've given this store so many chances is because of its convenience they close pretty late for a pet store they have a larger selection than petland and the mice are usually less aggressive than petland mice. but i guess ill have to keep going to the petco at 96 street and bway which has competent staff and actually have the things they advertise in stock. read more

This place is Horrific! DO NOT GET YOUR DOGS GROOMED HERE! The grooming service is a disgrace. I was just running in to get my dogs food, when I stopped over to see the beautiful dogs. They were being mistreated by multiple groomers. Especially 2 ladies. They were forcing the dogs legs and I could hear the dogs screaming every time she used the machine. I could. See cuts underneath his thigh and he cried when she clipped his nails! That was it! I called the manager and he calmly walked in as if to talk to her and help her groom. His name was Devon. I told him I would never being my dogs in, and if I had the time I would have waited for the dogs owner. I am reporting this store online. This unacceptable!!! I am furious! read more

This petco is a medium sized store then a normally large sized petco. Ethier way they have found out a way to put all the necessities that every pet needs. I like taking my dog to the groomers there. I always go to "denis"(I think that's how you spell her name lol). I also like the dog training. My dog used to jump on people cause she would get excited and go crazy. After classes ended she stopped doing those things cause of simple commands the trainer taught her. Over all nice staff. There open Mon-Sunday I'm not really sure about the hours though. read more
