I wish I could give this store 0 stars. First, I got a sick guinea pig from here and once her medication time was over- they tried to tell me that she was not sick. Second, I tried to get another guinea pig from here and instead of giving me a female, I was given a male. For pet food and other supplies, Petco is fine. They have a good variety of cat food and while their prices aren't the cheapest around, they have a larger selection of high-end food. Their grooming services, however, are not so good. I used to bring my cat here to get his nails clipped. He was a former street cat and I couldn't groom him at home. But after a few bad experiences, I'll never bring any of my pets here again. They're very quick to use restraints (the vet's office just covers my cat's eyes with a towel to calm it down) and one time I actually saw the groomer slam my cat down on the table when he was getting too wild. That was the last straw for me. Do your pet a favor and find another groomer. read more

Definitely the place to shop for any type of animal you might own. They have a HUGE variety of products you can purchase for your pet; anything from food to toys to vitamins. I personally own a cat and come here often to purchase food for my pet. My cat seems to like it so it must be pretty good. I also came in here to purchase this little house for my cat where it can sleep inside as well as scratch it. Defiantly worth it because my cat stopped ripping my furniture. My dog, Nate, loves PETCO. It's like his TOYS 'R US, and I take him fairly as a treat. The grooming services are a little pricey, but they're very good - although have started using another groomer, lately. Nate always enjoys his visits. The training program is exemplary!! Jin, the head trainer is fantastic. She was a big help to my partner and me before we got Nate, and she is still an incredible resource. Nate went through puppy training with Jin (he was 5 months old), and will be going through adult training with her in a few weeks. I'm glad PETCO is a neighborhood store for us. read more

Lots of animals here! Great selection of fish and also I feel that they take better care of the animals here than most pet stores. During hurricane sandy, all animals were deported (likely to other stores) to be taken care of. Of course, id never purchase animals. Only adopt, but this place is always loud as a zoo. Feels like home! Always lots of treats for your animals here. Even a food bar for dogs. Lots of things on sale all the time. I've gotten a sack of hay here for three dollars, regularly priced at seven. Note that petco always has coupons anyway. Staff and friendly but there sometimes seems to be a lack of staff around all the time. Sometimes very long lines. Either way, it's great here. They also have some evens like photography and dog trainings. Also a vet on duty I believe. It's part of the Avenue y and 17th street hub so it's great to go get something for the fridge an closet at stop and shop and Marshall's then here for something for the little animal. read more

2 Stars because we found a cool shaped fish tank there. The people at Petco need to get trained annually about the industry they represent. Petco needs to train them better than they do. Because, I even knew more about fish then the salespeople there... And I'm a beginner in the fish world. Which is pretty lame. They had no variety of fish. Just really small basic ones... Nothing special.. Disappointing. And putting the betas in small containers is not cool Petco! They said every Thursday they get new shipments so maybe the fish were just all sold out when we got there. Don't know. We bought a cool looking tank for our small apartment... We love it because it's tall and not so wide... However it's only 15 gallons. So now we are realizing we can't have too many fish in this size tank..... After looking online. Thing is, it's already set up in the living room.. We asked the salesman if it was a good size for a lot of fish and he was vague... But now we know, and will be going to two other fish stores tonight to check their tanks and fish. Moral of the story : You have to know everything and know exactly what you want before you go to this Petco. Also the tank we bought was a floor model - with the stand door broken. Not a new model to our surprise. And yet we only got 10% off on it when the door was obviously half broken...... Disappointed about that. We went ahead and bought it only because of its unique tall shape. But now were reconsidering. The guy who helped us was very nice and exuberant but wasn't informative at all. Maybe it was because it was just about closing time... I don't know the reason - but make sure if you go here, don't go close around closing time and come with a lot of knowledge and questions. read more

Honestly the worst experience ever at this particular Petco. Theresa the trainer is extremely rude and unfriendly and especially uncaring about what others think and how she treats said others. She was extremely nasty and unprofessional with the last time I had an interaction with her. I arrived to puppy playtime with my dog a tad bit late and she made a GIANT spectacle of it and in such a nasty attitude stated that puppy play time was at one and one sharp. She did not care to make it to "scold" me privately. But in front of everyone that was in the vicinity. My issue being that how does she expect punctuality when she herself can't do the same with leaving an email I sent a week ago unreplied and unattended to and SOELY replied when I called the store and I got a reply same day. Later after everyone left puppy playtime I addressed her in how would she expect for one to be punctual if she can't do the same. She stated she checks her email once a week and it shouldn't matter if I already got a reply. Theresa obviously lacks customer service skills because she does not know how to treat others with respect as she walked away from the discussion we were having. Perhaps it was because I looked young but who knows and cares. Her lackey tried to make an argument that the service was free, however I would rather pay for a service in socializing my dog than get treated like shit because a service is free even though I've spent $100's at Petco. She also made a statement that said she would never place a puppy at risk when she refused to place my dog in the pen with the other puppies (although she had NO PROBLEM doing such for others the last time I brought my dog) and to me that was as if she was stating I would place my dog in harms way which I WOULD NEVER DO. Never coming to this Petco again. Much better off ordering my things from CHEWY and I will be bringing my dog to Brooklyn Canine Club to socialize where they're much nicer and friendly to BOTH humans and dogs which is something I recommend every else to do as well. read more

Then, we came in and we saw the dog trainer before even saying hi to the puppy she immediately asked for vaccinations and said they were wrong. I told her that majority of the vaccinations were done at the same Vetco and in the meantime vetco did not want to put in vaccinations and we had to ask them twice. And she told me that could not happen. I asked her what I should do and she just told me I do not know. And just kept telling me the vaccinations were wrong. I usually get my high end dog and cat food from here. The fish selection has a vast variety from freshwater to salt water. There's adoptable cats, birds, lizards, and turtles. I scheduled an appointment 2 days ago to get my 2 dachshunds bathed along with getting their nails done etc. I drop them off at 11:30AM and was told it was busy today and should take 3 hours for them to be done. I called at 4:00PM to see if my dogs were done yet and they said they were bathed just need to do their nails ears and brush their teeth. It should be another 45 minutes. I now wait until 6:10PM also coming to the store now just to find out they were only bathed. When the staff seen us they took them out of the cages and started to clean them up. My 2 dachshunds were in a cage for over 6 hours, when my dogs don't go in cages. I will never bring them back to Petco to get groomed. I will find a private dog groomer for now on. read more

Petco is petco. It is a franchised pet store consisting of an array of employees. Some here are friendly and helpful while others are downright rude, offensive and unhelpful. In particular, one manager here is a rude, and mean person. He does not want to be bothered with a customers problems and will actually yell at patrons of the store calling them liars. The store is organized and clean. I like the way the arranged the aquatics section. Though there arent many employees, the ones that are there are helpful and genuinely do care about their animals. Today a group of teenagers were attempting to purchase a snake, and the sales associate refused to sell them the snake without making sure they have the proper habitat for it and a parent who was 18+ to pick up the animal. She was professional even when the teens were arguing and complaining. I was there to take advantage of the Petco Dollar per Gallon deal and was looking for a 55G. I found it, and when asking an employee to help bring it to the front desk they did, and helped load it into my boyfriend's car! They only lost a star because of the lack of employees, but otherwise fantastic location. read more

I purchased a angelfish from this store it looked healthy it died the next day!!! It also infected my other angelfish that lived for 5+ years and they died!!! The manager Jose was unreasonable and disrespectful. He refused to give me my money back on multiple attempts even our water sample was good. The Store Manager was the person who checked us out. He was slamming so hard on the keyboard I thought it was going to break. Very angry. My wife had some questions for him about coupons and signing up to become a Petco member. Short, angry answers. The looks this guy was giving was scary. Flared nostrils and intense eyebrows... Almost strange. All we are are customers checking out of a store. At one point he left the checkout area slamming the door behind him - at that point he was helping someone else out. There was a long line and everyone was uncomfortable. I slid over to the next cashier for my things and expressed my thoughts. He was silent. Once I checked out I asked another employee who the managers managers was and he was also silent. The Store Manager is a bully. I'll never go back here. He honestly looks like a guy set out to do a bad thing. Very angry and lets it be known. I'll be taking this higher up. He also charged us $40.00 for an 18.95 bill. Was going with my dog here for training. 1st trainer I had was great but unfortunately she left. Since my trainer left, I have yet to have another lesson with my dog and it's been months. I keep getting the runaround and no one ever calls back (I have called the store and even went to discuss the issue in person) to schedule a lesson. Worst part is I prepaid for the lessons. They provide food, cages, fishes, turtle, parrots, etc. My biggest complain is finding help. I often come to purchase fruit flies for my sons frog.. every container is empty they are basically using the supply to feed their animals and leave containers with few flies so you will buy.. I brought it to the attention of staff and was told the containers were open and all flies had jumped out.. but this is a every week occurrence.. very disappointing to think customers are being lied to and beat for the money. read more

I used to be a customer for that store. Today i came to buy a dry food for my cat. And also my friend asked me to check prices for salt water fishes and corals. In the store i took a few pictures with a price tag for fishes, when a salesperson from an aquarium section told me that is NOT allowed to take pictures, BUT it is no sigh in the store about that. Then that guy followed me to cash registers. I don`t know maybe he want to check if i`am a customer or just checking around the store and taking pictures of his fishes. So i have a petco rewards card and i bought a bag of an expensive dry cat food (Hill`s). Even on the yelp.com i see a lot of pictures of Petco and what`s inside the store from regular customers. The worst customer service *ever.* I went there on a saturday to buy a chinese water dragon with all the fixins and for the first 15 minutes was searching the store for anyone at all working there. Finally found someone who was following a guy wanting to get fish. The associate spent at least another 15 minutes pulling 3 tetras from a tank and labeling the bag and meanwhile about 6 other people walked up, waiting for the seemingly ONE person on the floor. When the guy was done, he immediately turned to a person who had walked up much later who then pointed to me that I was before him. I said I needed help in reptiles (i.e. the tanks adjoining the fish tanks) after which he turned his back to me and asked the crowd "who needs fish?" - I asked him if I was going to get any help at all and he said he had *a lot* of people needing fish before me. After asking if there was *anyone* to help in reptiles he said he'd page someone and the may or may not show up. So I went over to where the water dragons were and waited for another 15 minutes - and by this time there were two people working in fish. I walked over and the first guy (to his credit -- this is the only thing he did right) asked me if anyone had helped me - I said, no, I'm still waiting-- then he turned around and ignored me again. At that point I went back and waited at the water dragon cage for a few more minutes and then walked out. Over 45 minutes and not one stitch of help. For the premium prices they sure don't give a crap about customer service or have a sense of perspective (1 water dragon + fixins = several hundred dollars, tetras are $2 each. do the math) read more

I brought my small dog to the Avenue X Petco to be groomed. I have to say they did a nice job and my pet looked happy when I picked him up ( unlike other groomers he has been to). The two star rating is because I feel like I was ripped off with the price. I asked for a complete grooming but was told I would have to wait until the next week for an appointment. She told me that she could give him a bath that was fine because he realllllly needed a bath and I can never get his white fur clean when I bath him. she quoted me a price for the bath which was steep but I agreed. When I came to pick him up the price came out to what a full grooming would have cost. I asked why and she told me she had to do extra services like cleaning his teeth and a couple of other things that I did'nt ask for. Apparently the name of the game is just to make as much money as you can, which I can understand it is a business but I refuse to be charged for what I did not ask for . If I could give them zero stars I would. We had called earlier in the week to confirm a grooming appointment at Petco. The lady on the phone confirmed us for an 8am appointment and upon arrival the store wasn't even opened yet! There was a female employee standing outside so she grabbed a male colleague of hers to come speak with me. He said that there was no record of an appointment for us and that there completely booked. I asked if there was anyway to get slipped in since their groomer guaranteed us a spot at 8am. Then their general manager Ebon comes out, who was extremely rude and condescending comes and basically tells me that I'm frustrated and that he's trying to help by telling us that they can't guarantee anything. During my conversation with all 3 employees not once did they apologize for their incompetent colleague for messing up but instead yelled at us because we didn't know the name to the person who made the appointment! We drove 30 minutes to Petco for our dog to get groomed because we've always had a okay experience with them but after this experience I will never recommend it to anyone and come back here again. Their selection of products is pretty diverse but they never have sales of any sort. You should just save your time and visit a local groomer and pet store for anything! read more

Never really had a bad experience here. Never had a REAL occassion to ask for staff's help so I can't truly assess whether they're helpful. The lines are a bit messy and confusing and when it gets really crowded you'll hear the old cat ladies bickering about it! Otherwise, it's really just a fine pet store. I dont use their vet or grooming services but I see ppl taking their pets there all the time. I saw one lady with a gorgeous grey rotweiler who said she put her dog in one of petco's behavioral training classes and it worked out great. So apparently Petco has more to offer than my kitty's Fancy Feast :) read more

I have not used the store for their grooming services but as a sheepshead bay/emmons avenue resident I say that this store is a godsend! I have both a cat and a dog with very specific tastes and appetites. The store has everything I need in one and the prices for individual cans of food are cheaper than the few small pet stores in the area. Ceasers dog food is about 40cents cheaper here than in pathmark/walbaums. read more

Great selection of fish and plants, definitely one of the larger Petcos for owners of an aquarium compared to the others in Southern Brooklyn. Prices are comparable to other Petcos (obviously) and Petland Discounts, and they have to occasional specials, but in general I find the prices to be average for the most part. The aquarium staff is mixed with experience, I usually talk to the older staff, as they know more in regards to species requirements, whereas the younger staff seems to be just people hired, but not exactly aquarists or are still in-training. read more
