The award for worst pet store of the year goes to Petco in Covington Washington. This pet store is so horrible it is as if the store's goal is to win the aforementioned. The fish department has dead floating fish in many tanks. And the fish tank has invasive snails in the majority of the tanks which can carry bacterial and fungal diseases. Once the general manager bagged snails for my adult daughter. She said, she didn't know if one snail was dead, so she would throw it in for free. We purchased two Oscar fished at this store. One died on the way home which is a ten-minute drive. The other fish died a day later. The fish was covered upon death in a bacterial infection called cotton rot. Prior to this incident we purchased two Axolotls. The first after the store received and inadequately housed the endangered species for the first time in plant tank. Both axolotls were not doing well. The axolotls seemed in shock and under nourished. The creatures need to be kept in low light at low temperatures on a specific diet. Multiple store staff stated that Petco sent them with a box of rocks. We, my family decided to adopt the healthiest of the two. After a week the little guy doubled in size and was stable. However, the one at Petco was barely moving. I had visited the store three times for supplies. I thought I might be able to help the remaining creature. She was too far gone and died a day later. I returned and spoke to the general manager. Her response shocked me. She said, "Well that escalated fast, were did that all come from? I have tons of experience. In know everything about pets. My dad owns a pet store. I grew up around pets. I know exactly what I am doing." No resolution or solution was found. Later I called and spoke to Scott another manager. I also addressed the fact that Petco also has tarantulas and Toads in a display right up by the registers that people can bump into and knock over. They are being advertised as desk pets or last-minute items. Scott refunded the money for the axolotl. Today we took another pet for vaccinations at the Petco clinic. We were turned away because we were 2 minutes late. When we arrived, no vet was present and the other staff was packing up the supplies. The Petco clinic manager stared at use instead of speaking to us for two minutes. Usually, the vaccination clinic runs late. When we have brought our pets previously, we have waited in line twenty to thirty minutes past our scheduled appointment. Thus, two minutes seems weird to be turned away. We have been long term customers of this Petco. This Petco is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I have been in the store getting supplies when a shift leader assisting me has been called to the grooming salon because of a medical emergency. What kind of medical emergency happens during a grooming? Did they clip a dog's nails to short? Even their dog trainers are bad about customer service. I was in line one day and one owner was not keeping her dog away from another. One dog nipped another. A dog trainer came up and chewed out the owner for ten minutes. Incredibly stupid to keep a dog demonstrating aggression inside the store. For my family, today was a deal breaker it's not worth it and we are done with Petco. Not only are the prices hire they don't know anything about customer service. We will gladly make the longer drive to other options. read more

Today, we went to Petco to find some fish and supplies. The guy who helped us was very rude. Shouldn't even be doing the job if he can't be nice and interact well with customers. When he was getting the fish, he was telling us to move as he needed space. Didn't even ask us what fish we wanted and we couldn't see what he was doing. Did he think we were going to get up into his space and not allow him to even move around? The fish he got us weren't the pretty ones, but we just wanted to get out of there. My wife and I stopped into this store last night. I needed a few small snails for my beta tank. We looked at all the tanks and finally found a tank with a few small snails. After hunting around for a few minutes to find an employee I finally asked for help. We waiting 11 minutes for the employee to get back to the tank. I found this fascinating because the store was a ghost town. She came back and I pointed to the snails and said I wanted 2. She told me that those were not for sale. I can see why Petco is having financial issues. A HUGE store. No customers (except us) hard to find employees and items on display but not for sale. Horrible experience. read more

Every time I pulled up, the pooch barks in excitement bc he knows the staff in there treats him well, literally they gave him yummy treats that I almost never do! An alright pet store. Bought 2 Hamsters from this place in the last year. 1st one was very friendly and cute! We had it for almost a year and then it passed away all of sudden. Not sure if it was due to the change in weather or temperature, but one morning, noticed it wasn't moving. Enjoyed having her at home and entertaining her. The second Hamster we got a month ago didn't last at our residence too long when it bit my step-daughter when she tried to pet it and her finger was bleeding. We only had it for 3 days. I called to inquire if they would exchange my two very large Koi with some smaller goldfish as they have grown 3" since I added them to my aquarium on Nov 1st. The gal I spoke to affirmed they did it all the time. Greatful, I captured my two 5" Koi, put them in a bucket and drove down. Upon arrival, I was told that yes they'll take my fish but with no remuneration, no exchange, no swap, no return. I'd basically be donating the fish then have to buy others. The store is severely understaffed. However, once you get help they're very willing to assist. They take interest in why you're shopping there and how they can help or offer advice. It's a friendly shopping environment. It's near impossible to get a grooming appointment by phone and online doesn't let you truly list what you're looking for if it's slightly different than a listed package. We have found you better make your appointments in person or don't bother. But, once you get the pupper in there they take special care. He's a rescue with major anxiety and they listen to his needs and accommodate and we appreciate that. :) read more

CAVEAT EMPTOR: Petco Groomers - Covington Washington Have been a loyal customer of the Petco Covington Washington Store for many years which stopped today. We have had two pets in for grooming every 3 week and a grand puppy with our two for a bath and haircut every 6 weeks. We have had our dogs trained there, and purchased all our food, treats, toys, and other supplies there. We also have had our pets on the Petco Vital Care Plan. The manager, Josh, and our groomer, Mandy, were excellent, and have never been a problem over the years. They recently left. After their departure, over the next several months we had five grooming appointments either dropped or canceled for a myriad of reasons, two without any warning until we arrived to have them groomed. I called the central Petco office, and the supervisor took my complaint saying it would be sent back to the store manager to address the situation. Despite several conversations with the store manager Lexi and the grooming salon supervisor Zoey, the problem continued. Yesterday we received a call canceling our pet appointments because Zoey left, and they could not see our pets for over a month. I asked to have the store manage Lexi call me which she was not available. Since my intention now is to never use Petco again, I called Petco Vital Care to cancel my plan with them. This was even a worse experience than the grooming encounters. The representative Kyle attempted to provide alternatives but had to elevate to a supervisor to cancel the plans. I was left on hold for a significant amount of time, and finally told the supervisor would need to call me back. They did not. Next I called the Petco central line and asked to file a complain and seek help in canceling the Petco Vital Care Plans. The representative elevated to a supervisor who took my complaint of the store and was going to transfer me to the Petco Vital Care Department. I insisted she transfer me directly to a supervisor with the authority to address this situation which she did. Again, The Vital Care Supervisor tried to provide alternatives and resisted canceling my plans (1 yr. commitment). After listening to my ordeal and the complete failures of the Petco Covington Washington Store, he agreed and canceled my plans without penalty. Spent many hours today getting passed around like a dirty shirt to get this one thing done. TAKEAWAYS: Caveat Emptor! 1. NEVER shop at the Petco Covington Washington Store especially the grooming salon. Significant turnover and ability to maintain schedules. Unreliable! 2. NEVER sign up for The Petco Vital Care Plan. The rewards are nice but useless if you do not shop there. Canceling it is worse than attempting to get out of a gym membership. I took my adult Golden-doodle here and Amy was so good, she gave me the confidence I needed to get started and then my Holly gained her confidence as well. We took the basic training with no problems, the went on to get the Canine Good Citizen certification. Everyone in the store was also helpful during training classes and Holly made many friends. We still go visit to see her friends. I also take Holly to be groomed here as well and I have had great results with that too. read more

After bringing my dog here for the past nearly 9 years for grooming, I'm out. It's impossible to make appointments anymore. You either sit on hold usually for about 10-12 minutes, or they just forget about you and you have to just hang up. If you can get ahold of an employee, it's usually 3-4 weeks until they have something open. The employees never seem happy either and that makes me nervous to leave my dog around something with an attitude that shows as they don't care. My dog is 4lbs. For the last 9 years, she has cost no more than $45-$47 for a grooming. When I came in for my most recent appointment, they quoted me nearly $65. My visit prior to this, they also tried to upcharge it and I argued with them about it, as they tried to explain the price increase due to "minimum wage going up." After that visit I called another location and they said that was absolutely not true. I have also spoken to 3 friends who work at other locations, and they all said there is no possible was my dog would ever cost that much, and a dog more of the size of a German Shepard would cost around that price. On my last visit I also had to return the next day to get her hair fixed as it was uneven in some areas and they didn't even do another section. Anyways. I bailed out and found another groomer who did a much better job and it wasn't a hassle to get in, and had no pricing issues. Bye Petco! read more

I am never going to take my dog back to Petco to be groomed. This is the second month in a row that I have made an appointment for Sierra my sweet 110 pounds English Cream golden retriever to be bathed , brushed, trim hair on chest and around her butt. Both times when I took her in and was told an intern was going to wash her and wasn't qualified to trim any hair or mats off of her chest or tail. I don't want a young inexperienced Intern taking care of my dog . The cost is Over $100 to get her groomed and for that I expect much better service. They were rude and unprofessional. I am not one to leave reviews good or bad but this store is just chaos. Cashiers are seemingly always understaffed. All of the times I've come to this location I've been checked out by management or somebody that very clearly isn't the cashier position. But the reason I leave the review was specifically related to one of the managers Lexi. I asked for some help finding a couple of items and she was incredibly rude and disrespectful and made me feel as though I was a nuisance to her and that I was burdening her with my existence and was all around just unpleasant to interact with. I assumed she's store manager because while helping me she angrily and very unprofessionally told off the animal care lady for using too much bedding in the enclosures while "helping" me. This infuriated me because I've worked animal care and know how much bedding those animals are SUPPOSED to have and there is not a single enclosure that has even remotely enough. Either Lexi doesn't care about the wellbeing of the animals or is just plain incompetent. After being unable to help me she snappily asks the animal care lady Emilie to help me as she stomps her way into the back room pulling out her smartphone. Emilie was absolutely fantastic and is the sole reason that this review isn't 1 star. If I could rate the individual workers she would get a 6/5 stars. Found my items for me almost immediately and was extremely polite and made me feel like a welcome customer, contrary to Lexi. Clearly one of the only people that actually cares about the wellbeing of animals, and even recommended me a better brand of food for my pup! Clearly upper management needs to get involved and get Lexi out. Clearly doesn't know how to schedule enough cashiers, absolutely disrespectful and doesn't seem like she has her head screwed on straight. Will not be returning to this location and it's entirely because of Lexi. I do want to express my immense gratitude to Emilie for helping me out and making sure my pup is healthy. read more

Went to our local Petco yesterday to buy supplies for our puppy that just went into heat. The selection was horrible! They had one brand of disposable diapers and panty liners. We bought what we needed, took it home and the diapers were horrible. the fasteners kept breaking and the liners were small and ineffective. We had to make a run to a competitors store to buy all the same items. The competitor had more options and totally different options, thank goodness. read more

I thought I'd swing in here really fast for a few items, boy, was I wrong. The first thing I noticed when I walked in is that there was some sort of event going on. Lots of employees standing around by the door, all of whom were so busying talking to each other that they didn't greet or even look at me. I was basically a ghost. Holy crazy prices, Batman!!! Several of the items I looked at seemed crazy expensive so I decided to hop on the Internet to verify prices. I was able to find everything I wanted at Petco on Amazon - sold directly by the manufacturer - for noticeably less. The grooming brush I wanted was literally half the price on Amazon! I walked out empty handed. And, once again, all of the employees continued to talk with each other and didn't even acknowledge that I was there. Take your money elsewhere!! read more

I'd give them a lower rating if I could. I love Beaded dragons, and have bought two from this store. The first lived well and was loved and cared for, but had a shaky start due to misinformation given. This reptile was my therapy animal and I was devastated when he died. Trying to fill the void he left, I bought another. I noticed his finger was off at the store, but didn't think to much of it because other than a crooked finger them seemed health. I decided I'd get him then take him to the vet as soon as I could. He didn't live that long. Due to COVID it I couldn't get an immediate appointment and while waiting he stopped eating then didn't respond when I tried to wake him a while later. Turns out his crooked finger was a broken bone, and broken bones can be very deadly to baby beardies. There was nothing that could be done. I held him and coddled him as he was rushed to the vet. I held him as he was put down. I held him as the needle when in and his little body thrashed. He was already mentally gone but that didn't make it any easier. If you want a beardie I highly recommend White Hot Dragons. They help you know and get every you need and have health happy babies. read more

She is extremely rude, unhelpful, non negotiable and very unusual. She disrespected me as a human and as a woman. I was trying to make a transfer and she fought me the entire time instead of accepting the fact that I don't want her as a trainer for my dog and just letting me go somewhere else. It's ridiculous and so hurtful to me and my family. We feel discriminated against and are very unhappy with petco In general. I took my Yorkie to Petco based on the reviews as my normal groomer couldn't get her in timely. I specifically asked them to take a half inch off of her hair, trim her leg hair but to be careful not to cut it too much because it looks bad. I got my dog back and she looked awful. They CUT her hair off her legs completely and somehow interpreted half an inch as 3 inches. They also completely shaved her behind and she looks awful. To top it off she was so stressed when I got her back, I can't even imagine what she went through. When I complained the employee literally told me "it would grow back." I then called the store manager and while she was apologetic she offered me a free groom. So they can ruin my dogs hair again? I don't think so. Today when taking our 9 year old basset hound (Kona) in for her routine dog grooming appointment, she was refused. Kona has dealt with anxiety her entire life, which she takes vet prescribed trazadone for. In the last 4 months she has lost her older sister basset hound and her person (my husband) which has increased her anxiety and caused separation anxiety. Today Petco refused to take her because of the trazadone. Given that this medication is listed on her vet records it is obvious that they do not review the records and they clearly don't care about the mental well-being of the animals. I wish I could remember her name but we had bought treats one day and we forgot them there. When we got home I called and they confirmed that they were at the counter. Since we live MUCH closer to the Kent Petco I wasn't sure what to do since we paid. The woman graciously said she would bring our treats to the Kent location for us. Now that is customer service. She went out of her way to make sure we were happy. I was extremely happy and grateful...so was snickers. They always have the food and treats we use for our dog. Great selection. I will say the grooming here is ridiculously expensive. Same with Petsmart. GO TO PAWS AND CLAWS IN KENT/DES MOINES. You will be WAY HAPPY. They go by the size and weight of your dog but to give an example: Our chihuahua/terrier mix costs us $19. That includes: a bath, dry, toes clipping, anal glands squeezed, brush and if you ask to trim up fur a bit they will. ALL FOR $19. All that at Petco would have you at about $65....That is ridiculous. read more

Went there yesterday. Forgot my nicotine pen right on the counter INFRONT of the cashier and I realized I did not have it and was back at the store within 8 minutes and it's no where to be found. The "manager" Brittney said she hadn't seen it , however there was no one behind me in line lol and the parking lot only had 2 other people at the time so I don't believe she didn't see it I don't believe a customer took it. Another funny thing is when I called to understand how Brittney didn't see it the guy Jon another "manager" informed me Britney was his girlfriend and she would never steal anything. I feel it was a tag team process and they are having each others back because it can't go missing in 8 minutes but funny Jon AND Brittney were both at the register and when I came back to look for it Jon was running back in from his car lmao shady store and people. Lost my business. Therefore just be careful with leaving anything it is my fault however no one is trustworthy anymore and that's sad. The district manager said he doesn't have cameras to check and can't do anything but I'm a general manager and I feel I would offer the customer a small gift card or try to do something. Since we moved to the area, we spend a lot of time here. Then, we got two lab puppies. Yep-two. As we were going through the store to pick up our puppy supplies, we ran into Amy. She pointed us in the right direction for specific food, treats, etc. She also gave us information on the training classes. Since we were bringing two in, we got a discount. (Yay!) The puppies just graduated from Puppy 1 and we begin Puppy 2 next week. We were very impressed with Amy as a trainer. She took her time explaining and demonstrating and was very patient with the puppies (and with the puppy parents!) I would definitely recommend the training through Petco for your puppies and specifically recommend Amy. She rocks! read more

They hurt my dog. When I called to talk to them about it I just got a shrug of the shoulders with them saying "he wasn't bleeding when he left". They cut his nails all the way down to the paw on one of his paws. Normally I would let it go if it was one nail because mistakes happen but they did it to every nail on that paw. When I asked for a refund for hurting my dog they told me if I took a refund that my dog would not be aloud back as if it was his fault. Do not take your pet here for grooming. This is for Grooming only. I've had good experience with the store. But, our dog has needed to be groomed for a couple months now. However, for various reasons, they have turned her away. The first couple of times were because the groomer went home early or sick or something. Fine. The third time because our dog had diarrhea. Ok. But, now, they turned our dog away because her hair had gotten too long and too matted. WHAT?? It was their fault that they didn't groom her in the first place when her hair WASN'T too long. The store is clean, well lit and well maintained. The staff is friendly though they can be a bit difficult to find sometimes. I've been here mainly for fish and aquarium supplies. They have a large variety of fresh water tropical fish and a LOT of Bettas to choose from. The tanks are well lit and well maintained. Their selection of aquarium supplies and accessories is a bit limited, but they have all of the basics you'll need. They also have a decent selection of live fresh water plants to select from. So far, everyone that I've come in contact with has been very nice and eager to help. read more

Tiffany in grooming did a fantastic job with my little one. Adding on the de-shed and stuff adds up on the bill but she really did a fantastic job! ($80!!) My haircuts don't cost $80!! Maybe this is why she only gets groomed twice a year. I will say the grooming area is a bit of a zoo on the weekend, people going in and out and just chaos all over. There was a bit of smell going on but I think it was the stinky dogs checking in when we were checking out. My lil one seemed happy and chipper when I picked her up- thirsty and had to pee but she'd only been there 2.5 hours. She was exhausted afterwards, I'm sure it's just the stimulation overload from doing something she rarely does. We'll be back. I called and left a message for another place in the area and have not yet received a call back. I've been using their grooming department every couple of months for the last year. had a scheduled appointment today at 11 but due to some road construction and traffic ended up running a few minutes late. After getting to the store and waiting in line to be seen I was about 17-18 minutes late. I was told that they could no longer see my dog for her grooming appointment due to this. I understand that punctuality is important but all of my prior appointments have finished well before the quoted time so I'm not sure why being 15-20 minutes late is grounds for cancellation. i am extremely dissatisfied, besides the grooming service, I use petco for training and basic pet needs. However, due to this interaction I will no longer be using petco for anything as soon as my last training sessions are complete. read more
