I honestly can't believe at how the manager tall male blond brownish hair his names Kevin (male) confronted me about a call I placed a month about a baby bearded dragon I was sold that at the time looked healthy and mind me they told me it had been to the vet for a clef lip but once I got home and really looked at him he had respiratory problems and mouth rot, I called to ask about it and they just told me to return it and that's it and obviously I got upset because they are known for just throwing them away I hung up and that was that I returned to the store just an hour ago and someone mentioned it to him in the back and tell me why he came walking out with one of his employees (she had just got there for her shift, she was 10/10 sweet amazing) I think her name was brekah anyways he came and asked if I was the one on the phone in a disgusting manner and just confronted us about calling to complain about a hurt animal (in his care) and proceeded to tell me that I had an attitude and if I wanted a pet I can look elsewhere but mind me this was a whholeeeee month agooooo so he was sitting on this ... Sun, Feb 8 at 4:13 PM HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE AND CUSTOMER SERVICE AT PETCO IN ENCINITAS We have been loyal customers to the Petco in Encinitas for over a year more so than the Petco in La Costa where our dog was shaking for days after his grooming there a few years back. Fedra is our little maltipoo's favorite groomer as she is super gentle with him. However this past Saturday she couldn't make our 11am appointment after they texted me to confirm it and then sent a text 25 minutes prior to our appointment to cancel it. My husband was already headed out and half way there. The text arrived to my phone and I was in a yoga class and didn't notice it nor would I think that an appointment as this could be cancelled so suddenly and on such short notice. He was offered to leave the dog but they said it would take longer than usual and up to 3 hours if he left him as they are booked solid or we can bring him back tomorrow to get Fedra at 1:30 . We didn't want our dog to be there for so long especially if they are booked with so many other dogs. I personally drove him myself at 1:30 on Sunday and it was truly an inconvenience as I had to rearrange other commitments and wasn't really suppose to drive my car that was needing to be seen by a mechanic this week who told me to avoid driving it till you get some essential wire repair done. I slowly drove it to the groomer to find out that Fedra once again is not there and I stood around waiting for 35 minutes to be seen to sign him in with the next available groomer named Asia who happens to be the manager. She claims that she never told me that Fedra would be available today and that I did have the option to leave him yesterday even if it would be an up to 3 hour service. When he was there at 11am he put the groomer on the phone to see if I can bring him in the next day and I too heard the groomer say that it would take up to 3 hours to work on him. Now they send out a manager to speak to me as I was so disappointed and I simply asked for some compensation for my wasted time and gas twice driving to them and the manager clearly said No because he said they are still offering me to have him groomed right now and not cancelling my appointment today . He states that I need to understand that they did call to reschedule yesterday not realizing that my husband already head out because they informed us even if it was at a very last minute. I told him that this is horrible customer service to at least compensate my time with a nominal discount for this grooming and he totally refused. I said I hope this doesn't happen to my local neighbors and I felt compelled to share this experience on my nextdoor app so this doesn't happen to them. I was shocked to see how many others had similar experiences but more so with the groomers. There was another big dog also waiting 20 minutes before he got signed in who was absolutely refusing to be taken in and struggling with the groomer. He was terrified to the degree that the groomer was pulling him by his collar to go in and after a few minutes had to call the owners who were watching from the window to come get him and try again another day. I had a lot of negative energy that was on me specifically from Asia who gave me a very hard time as she was trying to justify all their poor service! Every groomer that came out of the back look exhausted and flustered. One groomer said they had a full day with 7 other dogs. I just hope they are all treated well and not traumatized when they get home such as PTSD particularly from Asia's energy! Will now need to seek other groomers that are loving and value the customers time to not cancel on them less than 30 minutes before the appointment. read more

Not recommended. I had 3 conversations with employees to schedule and re-schedule the appt. Not once was I told that "our policy is that we can't take dogs that have been given a sedative." It wasn't in the text reminders either. So, I took off work, drugged my dog, and drove down just to get turned away. Do not bring your dog to the grooming department! They are the worst groomers I have ever encountered. The department is managed by Kayleen who personally cut my other dogs hair, did a lackluster job. I'm questioning her experience. The pictures below are of my poor dog Mason that Kalyeen's partner did to him. She not only gave him a horrible hair cut, but cut his skin deep in multiple areas causing me a $1000 vet bill, and permanent skin damage. DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE. They offered we bring Mason to their "vetco" which is very limited as to what they can do and not an actual vet. No thanks! Please call corporate if you have had any issues like mine. I came here last week to get my dogs nails dremeled and Elise the groomer I swear barely touched them. It bothered me because I gave her a great tip without even looking at my dogs nails until I got home. I didn't want to be the one to complain but I've been getting my 13 year old dogs nails dremeled her whole life and they had never been this long after leaving a service. I ended up taking my dog to the vet for her annual check up this week and he said I should definitely bring my dog back because he said they could definitely do so much better. He couldn't believe that her nails were so long and I had just gone. I explained the situation to Elise on the phone and she said to bring her in today. When I brought her in she was rude and the manager Kim was also rude and they actually made me pay another $6 for them to clip the nails more. I can't believe I agreed because when she was done with my dog she wouldn't even give me my dog back without making sure I went and paid. After I paid I came to get my dog and the back nails were still very long. She said she was going to do a combo service of dremel and clipping them but she clearly just barely clipped them. This place was a big waste of my time and money and I will not be going back here. The customer service skills are clearly lacking here and I will be making sure I take my business to Petsmart. read more

When Petco grooming finally came back after being closed for some time, we were really happy to come back to a place that was affordable. Kayleen has been grooming our 4 year old maltipoo for about a year. It took a couple short and longer haircuts to find the cut we liked, but we did. Kayleen is great with Oreo. She's sweet and gentle and even though he's nervous at drop off he gets pretty relaxed once he's back there with her. He's always finished in the timeframe she gives me and it's clear that she enjoys what she does and adores our pup. I trust Oreo is in good hands when I drop him off with Kayleen. read more

This is a reflection of ALL Petco stores, but this is the store I was at today while buying a betta fish. These fish are never properly cared for, which is more of a corporate issue, but I was choosing to buy a clearly ill fish to give him a new chance at life today. They made me pay full price for him which I did because I'm crazy. However at the registers the cashiers start asking me if I forgot to buy a tank for it?? Fair question! but no, I already have one at home. ***My two cents here is I wish these stores would care EVEN JUST A LITTLE BUT about the fish IN THEIR CARE while they're in the store.*** They ask about MY set up at home while they have half dead fish sitting in empty cups with no stimulation. The grooming department had the vibe of a junior high with giggling mean girls in charge. I've never seen anything like it in my life. I'm only writing this because Petco's new Vetco clinic management just texted & emailed asking to rate our recent experience (which had left us utterly exhausted)! And then - without ever reading our review - immediately requested we'd allow them to post it on Google. So OK... they asked for it!! Something has gone SERIOUSLY WRONG with this Encinitas Petco clinic!! We've been here 4x? 5x? since June BUT this was our 1st experience since Petco switched from Thrive to Vetco. We arrived Tues on time for 2 vaxes that should have taken 10 minutes max! We called from outside because their waiting room was FILLED w/dogs (What??!!! We specifically chose this Petco cuz they told they always try to keep their waiting room empty for pet's safety/security & ours is terrified of other dogs). Even though it was raining, the male tech who answered said we could wait outside & they'd come out soon to give both vaxes there. We were fine with that so we waited 30+ min under small tree in parking lot in the rain since dogs were coming and going through the only covered entrance. When we called again to ask how much longer, the male tech (who we've never seen here before) says he forgot we were out there (huh?!?!) and asks us to come on in cuz waiting room's empty now. We get into exam room and the same Tech now can't find a record of our appt with the 2 vax names, and doesn't know which vaxes we need. I tell him the names but he still seems confused, so I CALL our old vet ON SPEAKER with this tech in the room. I ask our previous vet to repeat both vax names OUT LOUD for the tech. They repeat BOTH vax names OUT LOUD ON SPEAKER (& then I request they send our old records to Petco) & hang up. The Tech then turns to me and says since we don't know which vaxes we need (WTF?!), he'll have to wait for our previous vet to email the records. (What is going on with this guy?!!??) So I say the SAME vax names that our previous Vet JUST SAID OUT LOUD ... AGAIN. He leaves to get them & returns 5-10 min later w/only one, saying they RAN OUT of the other one (remember, we requested them by name when making appt, so theoretically they should be here!). He suggests we call Wed to make sure they have them & come back Thurs. This ENTIRE appt was a sh*t-show from beginning to end! The (new ?) male tech was certainly very pleasant to us once we were inside, but seemed utterly clueless about every other SINGLE thing he was supposed to know how to do!! This is the same tech who: 1) Originally answered our call & then forgot us while we waited for him 30 min in rain, 2) couldn't find vax names/appt info in their computer, 3) didn't know which vaxes we wanted even after BOTH I and our old vet repeatedly NAMED them for him, 4) after I inquired if he knew how to do this (think it was an injection), he hands me the oral vax to give to my dog myself. We left exactly 1 hour & 12 min after we arrived on time for a 2 vax appt that should have taken 10 min! Instead my dog got only 1 vax, we were both soaked after waiting 30+ min in rain & I'm left wondering WTF kind of TwilightZone craziness just happened!!! Past visits here w/the Vet Dr were great, she seemed skilled & was honest. Now we're debating whether to find a new vet or try to navigate this chaos again. Something has gone SERIOUSLY WRONG with this Encinitas Petco clinic!! Is it because Vetco took over from Thrive? Maybe, we don't know. But we simply can't comprehend how this previously good clinic could change SO much - from a relatively easy, simple experience to such chaos!! BUT more importantly, how someone who seems so obviously incompetent at this job (although, he was still a very nice person!) is working here as a skilled veterinary technician?!!?! No. Just no. This is so sad! Petco Thrive had a pretty good reputation & we were REALLY happy with the vet and satisfied with our treatment at this clinic... until this! On a scale from 1 - 5, we rate this visit and more importantly, what this clinic has apparently now become ... a solid ZERO! read more

We have two leopard geckos and they eat large crickets. In the past, I bought 40 to keep at home but the heat killed too many before I could feed them to my geckos. I had a very confusing in store experience at this location. After standing there obviously needing assistance and no one offering- I asked for help with a question I had, and the woman said she would get someone to help me.... I waited for what seemed like a very long time, I saw about 5 different people that looked like they worked there that seemed like they would be able to help me, but no one did- at one point a woman came from the back somewhere and said Hi to me as she walked by- I was very happy because I though someone finally came to help me only to see her go to the front, then go right back to wherever she came from... I eventually went to ask again to make sure someone was coming and that I hadn't been forgotten about, but the response I got was.... I'll say rude or nonexistent- I had to ask her again if someone coming or not- I went back to where I'd been waiting, and the woman I asked to help or get someone to help with my question pointed me to an area with people that were dressed in different clothing (groomers clothing?) in the grooming area that were very obviously very busy- I was confused- she was saying to ask the woman at the groomers area that clearly looked busy and was carrying a dog with her- so I was confused and told the groomer I could wait, and her response was that no she was in the middle of a bath- that I should ask her my question- which was confusing to me... as there were plenty of people in the store area that were very clearly not busy the entire time I was waiting that I would think could have helped me with my question- so I asked it as quickly as I could and she helped me. The thing I don't understand at all is why on earth the woman I asked to get someone to help me with my question would have me wait such a long time, then point me to the very busy people in the grooming area of the store- when there were at least 5 different people that did not look busy except for sometimes when a customer would come to the front to check out- ??? The store seemed well stocked. There's a different "Pet" store not far from this one that I've had much better experiences with. I don't think I'll be back to this one anytime soon. read more

We had a very bad experience at PETCO today. We came in 30 minutes before closing for our friend to pet a hamster in interest of maybe getting it. what seemed like the manager of the store was very rude and treated my friend poorly. They asked for his Id which he willingly gave she stared at it for 2 minutes and acted like he didn't bealive he was 18 when he was. After this she ran away for 5 minutes saying she would come back. she didn't come back and in a rude tone when she eventually came back said she doesn't have time to help us and it was almost closing time when we had waited this long. Horrible attitude will not be coming here to buy a hamster anytime soon. Fix the attitudes here, buying a pet is supposed to make you happy. read more
