I regularly take my mixed breed dog (German Shepard plus a multitude of other unknown breeds) to this location for groomer (usually once per month). It's easy to schedule on their app and select the package from your prior appointment and basically continue it in perpetuity. My dog is fairly easy going and I never really anticipate any issues. Nevertheless, the grooming staff seem to make him feel at ease and genuinely care about his well being. I've received calls and texts when he's ready and reminders about our appointments. Because my dog receives a shed release package, it's a bit pricier than the standard bath/groom. However, I think it's worth the cost (about $100 total before tip) given how much he sheds. The only downsides I've experienced are certain bookings have been cancelled after I scheduled on the app and received a text confirmation. It was simple and quick to go back in and schedule a new day/time, but still a head scratcher. Additionally, there have been a couple of times where I arrived for the appointment and the grooming staff was not at the check in counter. I waited for a few minutes before they came out. LISA!!! In Aquatics was absolutely amazing and very detail. I am a beta girl and had come in to get a new fish , my last one had died after 2 years! Lisa help me get my first half moon beta and showed me some updated food items to get. I went home and was irresponsible and killed my new fish within a day because I used some old pre made water from my previous fish. Running back to Lisa devastated she then gave me more knowledge on how too much conditioner can also kill them as well. Half moons are very sensitive and now I know. Once at the checkout Hallie! Dog owners, beware. My husband took our Mini Schnauzer to Petco in Missouri City for grooming, and the groomer named Mimi completely ruined his beautiful coat. Our puppy has been groomed regularly without any issues, but this time, Mimi butchered his cut. She even suggested that my husband bring him back the next day for her to continue the job. When he got home, our puppy was whining and whimpering. Do not take your pet to the Missouri City Petco for grooming. I called the store to speak with the manager and was hung up on multiple times; she was not helpful at all! I'm unbelievably frustrated. I've been getting my dog groomed at this Petco for a while and up until today the grooming service has been at least mediocre, and I was willing to settle for it out of convenience. Today the service that was provided by Sadie was an absolute disaster for the following reasons: 1. My dog was STILL WET when I picked him up. It's a dog wash, not rocket science--wash the dog, dry the dog and brush the dog. Simple. I won't even get started on the brushing because I'm pretty sure the 15 minute brush that's included in the service never happened given they didn't even have time to dry the dog. 2. The said grooming service also includes ear cleaning. I've attached the pictures of my dog's ears (taken after I picked him up from Petco) and I won't comment any further. 3. I was rushed there with a text message at 3:30 saying "your dog is ready for pick up and last pick up is at 4". I dropped off my dog for his 2pm appointment and I was told it would take at least 3 hours for him to be ready because there were 2 other dogs ahead of him waiting to be groomed by Sadie. When I tried to kindly bring up the issue at pick-up, the lady at the counter just kept cutting me off and talking over me so here I am writing this review assuming my point didn't get across the first time. I was essentially told they will take their sweet time grooming him and when it came to picking him up, I was given a 30 min notice to wrap up whatever the hell I was in the middle of and run over to get him at their convenience. The least they could have done was tell me when I dropped him off that the last pick up was at 4 if they had known that all along. Overall, I feel like I just wasted 60 bucks on a dog wash I could've done better in my backyard. I hope someone at this Petco has the decency to give me a refund or a store credit for the amount I spent today. He refused to open his right eye and continued to paw at it. I ended up taking him to a vet hospital where it was found he had a corneal ulcer, which may have come from shampoo getting in his eye. I really didn't blame the groomer but, wanted to see if anything may have happened during his session. I called numerous times and never ever received an answer. I was transferred to phones that rang off the hook but never once got to speak with an actual person about what happened to my pet which is really unfortunate. Condescending and purposely used overly complicated vet jargon to try and justify why she couldn't answer a simple question. Their X-rays cost $450 even as a member, then they charge you additional costs just to view and diagnose your pet. UPDATE: I used to love this place ... I've been bringing little Elliott to Petco South Shepherd since I adopted him four and a half years ago. There must be new management?? One would think that with the full scale renovation and addition of veterinary service, the service would excel but quite the opposite - this place has really gone downhill. AVOID THE GROOMERS. I'm not going to suggest that the grooming staff is physically abusive but there are very apparent signs of ANIMAL NEGLECT. Three times now I've scheduled a morning appointment so I could drop Elliott off before work and have been made to wait. Today was no different - well slightly - at least there was an employee present and lights on in the grooming area LOL! I waited around for a while the groomer touched up a dog on the table but it got to be time for me to be at work so I let the vet staff know I tied Elliott to the table and had to leave. Just got off the phone with that same employee who made me wait and is now vehemently is denying service. Now, because Petco was too busy to check me in, I have to leave on my lunch break and grab Elliott. As I wait for a manager to call (it's been an hour since the angry employee threatened to get a manager involved), I sit here and wonder why I fell in love with Petco South Shepherd to begin with. Fred, one of the most terrific groomers to date, was part of the lure but he left years ago. I mean, PetSmart is right down the street and it's conveniently right next door to Trader Joe's. Apparently, PetSmart is significantly cheaper, too - looking at their website now. My Petco grooms tend to land me north of $70 - $80 and Elliott is 23 pound short haired pup. Sooooooooooo ... it is with a heavy heart that I must leave Petco South Shepherd forever ... you can burn me once, twice maybe, but three times is habitual. read more

Worst experience of my life with the groomer Nina who doesn't want to do her job and the manager who refuses to give her name but it is comfortable kicking people out of her store instead of having a conversation. I walked in and showed them my vaccine records for my dog to get groomed. Off the rip Nina said the vaccines are fake and can't accept. My vet is connected to Petco (vetco) so I had them walk in and vouch for me that the vaccines are legitimate as soon as that happened Nina said she refuses the appointment because she's uncomfortable now even though the facts have been corrected. I asked to speak to the manager and she refused to speak with me or give me her name. I have a 2 pound dog and I'm trying to speak calmly and she's smiling saying to lower my voice immediately after she kicks me out of the store and threatens to call the police all for her asking for her name. I don't typically have any problems with local businesses, at least not enough of one to write a review on it, but what happened today I think warrants informing potential Petco Vet customers at this location. I had an appointment scheduled, was 6-7 minutes late and missed the "grace period" of 5 minutes and was turned away with my 8 week old puppy. There are several things wrong with this: 1) nowhere on the email or text confirmation does it mention anything about a grace period- best practice is you should let customers know what that is before they drive there (my commute was 20 minutes, making this even more frustrating) 2) I was 6/7 minutes late because of work, as well as traffic, missing the "grace period" by 1-2 minutes, and the decision was made to turn me away- you can't make an exception for barely missing this extremely short "grace period"? This is ridiculous and extremely impersonable- another bad practice, and luckily my pup was only going in for allergy treatment and not something more serious. 3) the "grace period" length itself is unreasonable for a place like Houston and should be reconsidered. I understand that they had several appointments, but then it becomes a scheduling problem and they should probably not stack appointments- bad business practice again. Overall I will not be taking my dog to the vet clinic here ever again. read more

The store is pretty great. It's hard finding someone to help / assist, but it has great selection. I have taken my pups to both thrive and vetco here and they were pretty decent. I switched to a smaller private family owned vet called eado vet clinic. It is much better and more affordable. I usually have good experiences in this grooming salon, but lately I was extremely disappointed. After taking my puppy to the vet, she was healthy as a horse. I then brought her in to get groomed and they wouldn't give her a haircut because she is a puppy and their new policy is to slowly introduce them to clippers and scissors to not traumatize them. This was annoying, but ok. Instead, they just gave her a bath and trimmed her sanitary areas. 24 hours later, she had explosive diarrhea. We had to give her 5 baths after paying to getting her bathed at this location. We found blood in her stool. We took her to the vet and she tested positive for giardiasis. We only take her out in our backyard and use puppy pads. Our other two dogs both tested negative for giardiasis, so it was not them. Additionally I have taken my other labradoodle to this location to get groomed in which every visit has resulted in inappropriate ear grooming for him to where he has cuts and scabs from the grooming tools as well as ear infections. Petco grooming took care of the vet bill but we were under the impression they would refund us for the bath since she most likely got giardiasis from their grooming salon, which isn't the first time it has happened to us. One of my other dogs had this happen at this same salon as well as an ear infection in 2020 and 2021. When I followed up about the grooming refund, they told me they spoke to the vet and the vet stated our dog got giardiasis from other pet fecal matter. That's not what we were told and it seems odd as the vet told us otherwise, it could have been from the grooming salon station/water source they use. It seems like they don't properly sanitize their grooming stations or it could be the water they use. Grooming told me they covered the vet bill, which is the least they could do, but that they wouldn't refund us for our puppy's grooming, which is pretty unprofessional considering it made our dog sick and we had to bathe her 5 times after they did. They told me their grooming salon is clearly not a good match for us and that we should go elsewhere. I agree since they don't practice proper sanitation of grooming station and doubtful they can provide sanitation logs. Extremely rude. At the end of the day, it's not about the money, it's about the principle. They can keep their $45 for grooming and invest them into proper grooming and sanitation training. :) They don't care about your pets or their health. This is animal negligence. Historically we have had very positive experiences here, which is why this is so disappointing that this is happened as of late. I'm not sure this is due to new staff changes, but disappointing is the least I can say. Ps. 03/23/23 our 3 pets got groomed: They did a good job grooming Piper. I try to be understanding as he may have just been having a bad day and seemed to be worked up after trying to resolve some issue with the previous customer. However, this cashier was blatantly rude to me. He mumbled something through his mask, and all I heard was "phone number." I gave him my phone number, and the computer said "customer not recognized" when he plugged it in. I guess it was for their rewards program. I apologized and told him that I wasn't a part of it, and he muttered, "For the love of Christ." He continued to be rude for the rest of the transaction. I get it if you're frustrated and having a rough day, I really do. Just try to be a little more subtle about your frustrations, especially to your customers. read more

Has no idea what's going on and can't even do a basic dog check up. They forced me to do multiple tests just in case and it's been over 24 hours and no one has contacted me. My dog could be dead because no one knows what's wrong with him at this horrid vet's office. What was the point of the tests? If something serious was happening with him why wasn't there any urgency? If they couldn't give me the test results by now so I could see if my dog needed treatment why did they not recommend another vet who actually knows what they are doing? I took my dog here because she appeared to have something lodged in her nose. The vet did not examine my dog in front of me, I never saw them in the same room. I have no idea how thorough of an exam she had, or if the vet even laid her hands on my pup. The vet told me they don't have the equipment to examine inside my dog's nose, then suggested $550 worth of x-rays and bloodwork. It felt like they were just wanting to make money and these were the tests they could do. Another employee in the clinic gave me info for another vet in town who does have the equipment necessary. The vet didn't offer this info to me, just sent the tech in with a the estimate. While in the waiting room I did witness one dog defecate on the floor and had blood in his stool. The owner wiped it up, but no one sanitized the floor. I witnessed another dog who had just been hit by a car and was bleeding out be quickly turned away by the receptionist, no one tried to help that dog in any way. read more

I've been taking my little SHIH-TZU puppy LILLY to the PetCo on Westheimer in the Westchase area. I had the BEST groomer!! Her name is BRITTANY! We absolutely LOVE her! However, she got transferred all the way to River Oaks!! It's a VERY LONG drive, but Brittany is 100% WORTH it!!!!! We have become one of her MANY clients that have followed Brittany there. She's an outstanding groomer! Lilly will only allow Brittany to touch her face or even come close to grooming her! Besides that Brittany is just an AMAZING, KIND, SWEET & CARING PERSON in general! I would not allow this doctor to even groom my dog. For the sake of anonymity I will refer to her as "Dr C. I called in a state of emergency as my dog had not eaten in 3 days and I was looking for an emergency appointment to get him some fluids or stomach medicine to increase his appetite. Unfortunately they took one look at me and my un-groomed dog and made a judgement call and asked me if I would consider the quality of his life at this time. Never was there a prognosis or any indication of what might be wrong with my 18 year old dog just that he looked non groomed and a little lethargic. Well we left there after paying for nothing except to be treated badly and sought out medical care from another only to find out that he has onset Alzheimer's. Let me say this to you Dr C your bedside manor is deplorable and you should never judge a book by the cover, you will get a lot further in life if you do your best to accommodate all and not just those that fit the River Oaks profile. The only saving grace for this horrible experience was the amazing receptionist who was more concerned about my experience than the doctor herself. DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG HERE! For the past 7 months I have been utilizing the services of Petco's Vet services (Thrive/Vetco Affordable Vet Care) and am thrilled to say how impressed I am! I used to struggle with getting in to see my other vet and now I can book all appointments online in a snap. The wait time once I am at the vet is minimal to say the least and the receptionist and techs are ALL friendly and make our time there enjoyable. My expectations are exceeded each time I need to go and see Dr. Cleary with my son's pup. She truly has been very helpful in her guidance and support of getting my son's 70 lb. puppy healthy. i started coming to his location recently and prefer it over their other competitors in the area. they are never busy when i go which means no waiting in lines at checkout. they also have high-end, luxury brands of dog food which most other places don't.
