New dog guy here (foster turned adoption) and probably a little paranoid... but i came home the other evening and found Ella had gotten into a bag of bully sticks, with at least two missing. I was afraid she swallowed one whole. It was after hours, and found Sunset Animal Hospital online and went in. The receptionists at the front counter were warm and friendly, took my info and had us wait in a clean and dog friendly waiting room. I was seen by the vet, Dr. Kim, about 10 or 15 minutes later. I explained Ella's story, and advised him my fears of maybe the bully stick causing internal damage or an intenstinal blockage. The doctor was caring, empathetic and direct, advising me that x rays likely would not show anything. I brought a bully stick with us and showed him the treat... he suggested i give it to her and see how she eats it... We we did, and she started gnawing on it like a dog should. The doc told me that it looks like she knows how to eat them and he advised just to monitor her closely for distress, vomiting, pain, etc.. and bring her back if she showed any signs/symptoms. i went back to reception and I overheard one of the employees on the phone with Dr. Kim . I heard her say, "a consultation?" and the doctor apparently gave her instructions. When she hung up, she told me, "No charge". I was shocked, and very grateful. I actually got choked up at this display of kindness. Being a new dog owner, I probably would have agreed to anything the doctor had advised, kind of an easy "mark" so to speak... but nope, they were honest, up front, kind, understanding, and refused to take advantage of my paranoia - even though i basically was begging them to! What's even more heartbreaking is that I had brought him to this same hospital just three days earlier, where I saw Dr. Lane. Dr. Lane was compassionate, thorough, and advised me to follow up with my primary veterinarian. My experience with him was completely different from what happened the night Shiloh died while under Dr. Johnson's care. The moment Dr. Johnson walked into the room, before introducing himself, before asking Shiloh's name, before examining him or reviewing his history, his first words were, "I'm suggesting euthanasia," because my dog looked to be in bad shape. As a pet owner in complete panic, that is not how you begin a conversation. I explained that Shiloh's eye surgery had been over a month earlier and that the healing process and scab on his side were already being monitored by his regular veterinarian. I even showed Dr. Johnson videos from that same day of Shiloh awake, alert, and active just hours before this visit. It felt like assumptions were being made before anyone took the time to understand his medical history. Nurse Haley attempted to comfort me by saying it looked like a dementia episode and shared stories about her own elderly dogs having similar screaming episodes before returning to normal. I also understand that not every patient can be saved. This review is not because my dog passed away. It's because of how my dog and I were treated during one of the most devastating nights of my life. Compassion matters. Communication matters. Bedside manner matters. I was a little scared to come here because the reviews were mixed on both Yelp and Google. But there is not a ton of options for 24 hour emergency Vet Care. I came here because my sweet boy was having a front leg issue and my Vet was closed for the day. I arrived at 4p and ended up checking out at about 7p. When I arrived and filled out the required paperwork. There was another pet mama that had just been turned away and told to go to Gulf Coast Vet. She seemed frustrated and upset. I had hoped that wasn't a bad omen that she essentially was being turned away. I actually went outside when she left, to talk to this pet mama to understand more and see if she was ok. She said that when she had called ahead they told her they could help her and perform a procedure that was needed, but when she arrived they declined to do it and told her to go to another emergency vet. She just felt frustrated she had drove all the way here wasting time. I wished her well, and went back inside. At this point I didn't feel like I had much time to search around for another 24/7 emergency vet, as there are only a handful in greater houston. Once I filled out the required paperwork, and was placed in the exam room and we waited there. Then it took a little to get his vitals taken. Then they did the Vet exam outside the room. Which I guess is a choice? Or maybe there policy? But after the exam. I finally saw the Vet in person. He recommended an xray. Then he leaves, they send there billing person to go over cost. I was estimated $800+. I agreed to most of the recommendations. But declined to have an outside radiologist read the xray as it seemed unnecessary. We proceed with everything. After the xray the Vet came back in. Showed me the imaging. And said crate rest for 2 weeks. Prescribed some anti inflammatory meds and other meds for home, and said the swelling should go down. Luckily his leg was not broken or fractured. So that was the good news. But the vet tech while giving my meds in the room said the cost should go down to $300+ only. But when I went to check out, it was about $700. So I asked them to go over the bill, and told them what the tech had told me. So I asked for the vet tech again. Shr came out an apologized about the mismatch of what I actually paid versus what she had verbally quoted me. I mean I am grateful my dog was able to seen and taken care of. There was no rush, no coldness, only compassion, patience, and dignity for my dog and for me. They let my whole family stay in the room to say goodbye to my baby and even our other dogs to smell him after he passed. Their #1 priority is charging you money -- NOT your pet. We brought in our 10 mo anemic cat in only to be told our options were a $6000 blood transfusion or euthanasia. They said he would likely die without the transfusion. A week later -- after picking neither option they presented -- my cat is still alive and doing very well. We took him to a proper vet, who prescribed him iron supplements. Our Sunset visit cost over $700 and they wanted to kill my cat. The proper vet (and I say that meaning one who actually cares and doesn't just want your money) cost $74 and change, and they ran his blood tests at least THREE times. DO NOT GO TO THIS CHOP SHOP/PET MURDER FOR PROFIT VET. THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY AND WILL RECOMMEND KILLING YOUR PET IF IT HELPS THEM MAKE MORE MONEY. Notice how their marketing manager only responds to the positive reviews? Yet they send Google review and survey requests IMMEDIATELY upon conclusion of your appointment, even if they gave sub par service. They also slide AMA paperwork in when you're checking out -- but the "doctors" and front desk don't mention it whatsoever. Then, they put "notes" in your record that make it seem like they tried harder than they did to diagnose your pet and you turned down testing/diagnostics that they recommended. Their "official" records say my cat's diagnostic was "anorexia", when he was actually anemic. I received no response when I asked for corrected records. I would rather have a hoodoo granny who throws bones to predict the weather treat my pets over this nonsense, money-grabbing establishment. Their vets and vet techs should be ashamed of themselves and find employment elsewhere, unless they actually give as few sh*ts as the people who own this sad excuse of an "animal hospital". I remember bringing my French bulldog here late night as he was having seizures, they quoted my 4000 for blood transfusion and telling me if I don't pay he will pass from low blood count and he was diagnosed with enlarged heart, I paid the 4k as I was not wanting to let go of my dog, 3 days later he was discharged and he was weak for about a week and never full recovered, he started having more seizures, I brought him back and they recommended I put him down this time after another $600 for a check up. So we had to visit here after a mishap at the Petsmart grooming salon. The gps had me circle maybe 3-4x and that's probably my fault. Took my cat since it was ganged up by 2 dogs , they told me he broke two nails, what they didn't tell me was they were broken and left like that. Instead of removing them hence they were already in bad condition, i trusted their word they said he was fine assuming they checked him . A few days later i was trimming his nails the broken nails were still there and the are was swollen up and infected. They didn't tell me anything about the nails at all and i had to take him to another vet in which they removed them and cleaned them. I had a really great experience with Sunset Animal hospital. I noticed my shepherd was super bloated at the dog park and immediately took her to get looked at because I thought she might've been experiencing GDV. Sure enough she was, and she had to get brought into emergency surgery. Dr.Chang was very informative and so was the tech that was working with my dog (I wish I could remember her name). They answered every question I had and explained every detail thoroughly which really helped me in a moment of pure chaos and anxiety. From what I know they took good care of my baby over night, and they even let me see her once she was out of surgery before heading home for the night. All of the staff I interacted with was very friendly and never made me feel like I was asking for too much. Not sure why they have such bad reviews but Dr. Chang was great to work with. Yes the surgery was expensive but I called around to other emergency vets at the time I was there and was actually quoted more than what I ended up spending with Sunset. Today's visit was pretty seamless with virtually no wait. I loved how they provided us with various options with costs allowing us to choose which ones we wanted performed and in what order. This enabled us to first select what was cost effective and most likely provide the best results. I dealt with the male nurse "Vicky". After I left I realized that my pup had not received an antibiotic injection to help with his infection. Disappointing and traumatizing for me and my cat. My journey with Sunset Animal Hospital, spanning three visits for my beloved cats, has been a series of diminishing returns, resulting in a final experience that has left me and my cat scarred. I've learned, that cats do not forget. Taking him to the vet now results in me having to partially sedate him, whereas prior, he was a vet favorite. The first visit, while expensive, ended positively, leaving me grateful for the care provided. However, the second visit introduced cracks in the facade, with a vet tech relaying incorrect information that the vet had to correct, immediately - to protect my cat. This also foreshadowed deeper issues within the practice. My third visit was horrible. While waiting for my cat, who was in pain and required emergency professional attention, I was subjected to overhearing a conversation between three vet techs who were working with him in the back as I waited in the room. Their dialogue, laden with inappropriate and unprofessional comments, was not only disrespectful but also distressing, especially as they were handling my distressed cat. Their lack of professionalism extended beyond mere conversation indicating none of them wanted to work with him and why did they get him. Meanwhile, as they handled him, I could hear my cat's screams and hisses as their handling evidently caused him significant discomfort. This was particularly disheartening given the explicit warning I provided about his pain-induced behavior early that day. The disregard for professional conduct behind closed doors starkly contrasted with the compassionate care I expected. Coupled with the astronomical cost exceeding $1500 for an enema, the overall experience was not just financially burdensome but emotionally taxing as well. The casual, jest-filled atmosphere from the techs, especially when at the expense of their clients and their suffering pets, was wholly inappropriate. Also - the typical response from the business manager, aimed at placating dissatisfied clients, will not suffice to address the core issues I've encountered. Don't even bother. The lack of professionalism, the mishandling of animals in distress, and the exorbitant costs are concerns that merit serious attention beyond mere acknowledgment and standard apologies. This experience has left an indelible mark, not only in the form of a substantial financial outlay but more significantly, in the memory of my cat's distress. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of compassionate, professional care in veterinary practices--a standard that, based on my last visit to Sunset Animal Hospital, was notably absent. I share this review not out of spite but as a caution to others who seek a safe, professional, and caring environment for their pets. Was seen immediately at vergi animal hospital after waiting over 5hrs at Sunset-- being told I was next for 4 of those hours. My boy had acute pancreatitis and severe dehydration. I watched several animals get triaged in front of me, that were in no worse shape. They even saw him throw up water and still had me wait another 45 mins before I finally stormed out and went to Vergi. I just didn't say the right combo of words to get an assessment I guess. I just noticed some negative reviews about Sunset Animal Hospital, and decided that despite my tendency to avoid writing reviews, perhaps I should share my experiences, too.  About 15 years ago, the vet I had used and loved for almost 20 years retired, and the people who took over his practice were officious, bossy, disorganized, and downright rude. As a result, we didn't officially have a vet the one evening my 17-year-old cat went from "showing his age" to clearly "it was time."  When I frantically looked around for a late-night vet, I called Sunset Animal Hospital and I explained the situation. They were very kind and only about 20 minutes away. My husband and I loaded our sweet baby boy Obie in the car and drove to their location. When we notified them that we were there around 9:30 p.m., they immediately hustled us into a treatment room, saying they thought we might be more comfortable there. Three separate parties waited in the two sitting areas one lady with a cat and two people with three friendly dogs all bunched together. They told us the doctor would be awhile -- maybe as long as 30-45 minutes -- but it was perfectly all right because we needed a little more time to say "good-bye." The staff checked on us frequently (maybe every 10-15 minutes), one brought us some bottled water, and another brought me a box of tissue when she noticed I had been crying. Each time, they mentioned what a beautiful cat he was and extended their sympathies. Preceding the doctor was a courteous vet tech who asked a lot of specific questions about our Obie's activities, habits, and general quality of life, counseled us briefly, and brought an estimate for the cost of services for our approval. While it was a bit more than I had hoped for, it was quite reasonable considering it was almost 11:00 on a weeknight, plus the quality of care so far was top notch! When the doctor arrived (before 45 minutes had passed), she was extremely empathetic and genuinely caring as she carefully handled our "old man" for a quick exam. She had the vet tech take him away -- very briefly -- to shave a patch off his leg and set him up to receive the shot intravenously.  While the cat was out of the room, she checked in with us and made a point of saying that in her medical opinion, there was nothing we could do to improve his health and quality of life, and as things stood, we were making the right decision at the right time. Even though it was almost 15 years ago, I can almost hear her words verbatim, and better words could not have been spoken in that moment. I think every parent of every beloved companion animal dreads this foregone conclusion to the relationship, and we really question our decisions when the time comes for us to make the tough ones. Now, to be clear -- this isn't what happened -- but it felt as though this lovely doctor took me by the hand, looked me in the eyes, and said, "I know this is a hard decision, Kitty Mommy, but you are absolutely doing the right thing!" Nothing could diminish the pain of saying goodbye, but what she said comforted me, so much so that I wouldn't spend the next few months wondering if I should have given him a new medicine or changed his food or whatnot, to eek out a few precious moments more of my little guy's time. Then she told me that we could have a few moments to say our goodbyes -- just let them know when we were ready. So hubby and I took turns hugging our sweet cat and whispering to him how wonderful he was and what an amazing life he had lived and that he was as Jellicle as a Jellicle could be and that time would pass magically until someday he would see a rainbow bridge, and he could find me on the other side. Then we signalled the vet tech. The doctor arrived promptly. She let me hold my cat while the medicine was injected, and I sang my little, "old man" to sleep, tears pouring down my face. For what is probably the most difficult appointment for any pet owner during their baby's life, Sunset Animal Hospital did all the right things, and more. I cannot imagine that dreaded event going more smoothly nor being handled more empathetically.  Since that day, Sunset Animal Hospital has served almost all (spaying/neutering done elsewhere) our veterinary needs, and we continue to be pleased with their services. Yes, there have been occasional hiccups -- seldom does any business operate flawlessly. However, throughout the years, my cats and I have always enjoyed their courteous, kind-hearted service. I have never met anyone who does the hiring at Sunset, but I would hazard a guess that a cornerstone for their hiring decisions might be based on finding skilled people who truly love animals and can also be very kind to the other people who love them. Had a 2 hour wait to be seen. Appointment t at 10- got in after 12:00. Called back to refill a prescription and while my dog is in distress, the doctor Kim was out so they had to refer it to another doctor and it was going to take TWO DAYS, to get him or whoever to look at it. Horrible service. Asleep at the wheel staff . Won't be back. read more

Brought my Frenchie in for breathing problems. They assessed and stabilized him immediately upon arrival. Then they gave him back and told us to wait an hour to see the vet. The benches are hard wood and hurt your butt. There's keurig coffee but they ran out of drinking cups. There's a tv. Then they call you into the exam room and whisk your pet away through an inner door. They come back with what tests they can run and an estimated cost. Then you sign off and wait for your pet to be checked in a different room than where you are. We left to eat. The vet called with pretty much a guess and overall diagnosis and opinion of what's wrong with my dog...well he actually didn't know what was wrong with my dog. He said he had an eye infection and back/hip and palate issue common with frenchies but couldn't exactly diagnose the initial issue we came for (breathing ). Possible collapsed trachea? Either way my dog was fine when we left and $1550 shorter in the bank. He got cough meds (he wasn't coughing) and got steroids he probably didn't need. And the eye drops. The staff was very nice. I'm glad I got my dog checked out but I wasn't satisfied I guess with the answer of they're not sure what he had but they wanted to address his other problems I wasn't concerned about. read more

May 2022 my dog Gigi became mysteriously, suddenly and seriously ill. Without going into the traumatic details, within hours Gigi had gone from an adorable, lovable, cuddly, energetic small dog to suffering, seizures and paralysis. We searched all over Houston for a place that could provide emergency care without a $1000 per night stay and $2000 upfront vet fee. The first place charged us $100 and didn't even diagnose her. When we realized that whatever had happened had put Gigi in a state where she could either not be healed or be healed with a drastically low quality of life, we had to make one of the most painful decisions ever. We finally found Sunset and they were so gentle with us and very understanding and helpful. They sedated Gigi to stop the seizures and calm her down so we could hold her and say our goodbyes. We chose to have her cremated her, and about a week they later gave us this plaque with her ashes in an engraving of her paw print. Though we lost our baby, we felt so cared for by Sunset even after her last moments here on earth. Gigi may be gone but she'll be with us forever. Thank you all so much. read more

SAVE YOUR PETS - DO NOT GO TO SUNSET ANIMAL HOSPITAL - EVER. We took our cat in because her foot was hurting her and she could not walk on it. Sunset said they would need to "sedate" her so they could take an X-ray of the foot. We did not know, but they gave her an OVERDOSE OF OPIODS which caused her not to be able to move, eat, drink or poop for eight days! The X-ray showed NOTHING WRONG with our cat. However, she was comatose, had red glazed eyes, and could not move. After 2 days of not eating or drinking water we took her back to Sunset and they had to rehydrate her. All this and they charged $1,600 for the xray that showed nothing and they updated her shots. NEVER EVER GO TO SUNSET ANIMAL HOSPITAL!!! THEIR TECHS ARE INCOMPETENT AND SHOULD NOT HAVE GIVEN AN OVERDOSE OF OPIODS JUST TO TAKE AN X-RAY OF A FOOT. SAVE YOUR PET - FIND ANOTHER PROVIDER. read more

I think everyone should go here with the understanding that the care of your pet comes secondary to the amount of money this predatory animal hospital is able to squeeze out of you. Their first concern are your green backs. On 6/19/2021 I noticed my dog was unable to walk and loss control of one eye. I spent an hour and a half trying to find another place that was open to avoid taking her back here but as she got worse I broke down and took her back. A lot went on during the visit that I didn't like. Including examining my dog while I went to the restroom after Id expressed I wanted to be present. But the most egregious was a medication for my dogs eye that was not needed. Our bill came up to $1200 and after checking out I was brought back into the exam room where the vet tech explained all the medications my pup would be on. One was steroid eyedrops. I asked what was the issue with my dogs eye and the tech said the eye stain came back normal and there was nothing wrong with her eye. I should have objected to the medication right then and there but after being there for over 3 hours I was ready to go. I never even cracked the seal on the eyedrops and my dogs eye was fine without them. While cleaning up a few days later I noticed it and called to ask for it be refunded and complain a little that it was even given in the first place since there was nothing wrong with my dogs eye. Conveniently the person on the phone said that my dog did in fact have an eye infection and a laundry list of other things that warranted the drops. I guess the tech just strangely missed all of this. She also said that because it had been more than 10 days they couldn't take the meds back or issue a refund which was a flat out lie because the receipt clearly shows it hadn't been 10 days. Just stay away. Nothing good can come from bringing your pet here. Nothing! read more
