I used to take my two dogs to petco in 29 palms to get groomed regularly and always felt that the $70 was well spent.... however I am sad I will no longer be taking my dogs to get groomed at petco. Both dogs were semi wet when I received them, which one I slightly expected because he's not a fan of the dryer. However when they dried not only did they still smell bad but I realized their ears were still extremely dirty, and both were scratching non stop! They did not stop scratching for two days, at that point I gave them another bath thoroughly and the scratching stopped.... although the groomers were nice and conversational they truly failed to what they were paid $70 to do. read more

My husband and I just moved down here to the Monterey area and were looking for a great Petco to take our dogs to; Petco always has the best groomers so we were hoping this Petco had great groomers like the last one. It definitely does! From the moment you walk in the door you and your dogs are greeted and welcomed and made to feel at home. They really take pride in their work at this Petco, our dogs looked and smelled amazing after their baths. This will definitely be the Petco we continue to go to for the foreseeable future. read more

We unfortunately did not have the most pleasant of experiences here. My brother bought a pet chameleon for his birthday. There was some skin around her rear, but Petco stated that it was a calcified deposit and that it would fall of with her first shed. Well, it continued to get worse, and unfortunately she passed away this morning after all of our efforts to get her back to optimal health. If there is ANYTHING wrong with the pet, do not proceed to buy it. The animals here are obviously not well, yet Petco will still sell them to you. Horrendous. read more

This is a most unfortunate review I've ever had to write. We have been clients of the grooming salon for over 16 years and purchased various items for our dogs, including harnesses. We get our 2 dogs groomed 1 once a week and clipped every 5 weeks (10 years with Sergio). 4-5 times in the last year one of the grooming people (not Sergio) has put the harnesses on incorrectly. No big deal, but these are like sometimes difficult to get back on, especial when the straps are pulled apart and put back together wrong. On 10/22 I went into the store to ask for for help in straightening out one of the harnesses. The clerk was not busy at the time and was extremely courteous as I explained that this happened on the prior Tuesday when we picked our dogs, thinking to fix it at home as it's so busy at the groomer's that time of day. Ashley, the Manager came up, interrupted us and told the clerk to go back to work and she'd handle the "problem". I explained to her that this had happened last week at the groomers and all of a sudden she started ranting about how this wasn't their fault, it was my husband's fault, SHE saw him come in and noticed that the harness was not on the dog correctly at that time (my husband said there was no one in the area, except for the groomers, so Ashely's presence was not possible). When I said the dogs left the house with harness put on correctly from the prior week's visit, she started repeating her rant in front of other customers. I said fine and took the harness, intending to ask for help in the grooming salon. As I started to speak with the grooming manager, Ashley rushed through the door, sat herself behind the desk, arms folded, not saying a word. The grooming manager and I were startled and uncomfortable enough not unable to continue, so I said I'd contact the following day. I called Corporate Headquarters and spoke to Jim Fochs who is the Division Manager for this area. The upshot is that he met with Ashley, she denied her actions and they pulled a coupon that every manager, including Ashely had approved because we were such good customers and spend over $70,000 dollars during our 16 year relationship with Petco. She actually told my husband that "I was not rude to your wife and oh, by the way, we went through your records and your coupon is no longer good" - this all in one sentence. Jim Fochs talked to my husband later and also said coupon was not valid, but fumbled around as to who's idea it had been. Fair enough that the coupon is invalid, but to do it the moment Ashley could, in the way she did, made it pretty obvious that this was payback for complaining to management. Jim Fochs also said that since Ashley denied being rude, there was nothing he could do........ followed by his comments about extremely busy due to his retiring from the company in a week or so after 20 years. Hello??????? Does anyone care that a long-term customer is not happy, was treated appallingly and that this Petco store will lose over $400 a month because of Ashley's bizarre behavior? Apparently not and it's unfortunate because we got along with everyone there; and never had any prior dealings with Ashley. Jim Fochs apparently believes in pandering to a manager instead of signing her up who for tutorial in how to treat customers. Ideally someone from Corporate needs to look into this incident more closely and with more than the extremely lazy brush off than we were given. This is deplorable action by two employees of what has heretofore been an excellent place to take our dogs. How sad an ending and how incomprehensible that Petco apparently allows and encourages this despicable treatment of it's customers by employees who are supposed to be there to help and assist, not harass and denigrate. read more

We've been taking our Border Collie mix to be groomed for over a year. We previously had no complaints when she was groomed by Sergio. Unfortunately he is no longer a groomer so we had to take a gamble with a newbie. The first issue was that after 4 hrs they didn't call to say she was ready, I had to call. Then when I picked her up her cut was pretty uneven and I asked them to fix it. A groomer I've never been before took her from me with out saying anything or even looking at my face. Pretty odd. They fixed her cut and we left. Later that night I realized they didn't cut her nails! I even paid extra to have them filed down. Ughh. Not happy with these new people. I won't be back for Petco grooming again. read more

This review is for the grooming service. Pretty crappy service here. Brought my dog in for a haircut. The staff was young and inexperienced, which is not really a big deal; it's the attitude that is unacceptable. The groomer charged me extra claiming she needed extra help to hold the dog, a 30 lbs dog. In the 10 years I have had my dog, every other groomer I have ever taken him to has always complemented me on how well-behaved he is. Here is where the crappy service comes in. Nobody bothered to tell me about this up-charge until I noticed it when I was about to pay as I was charged an extra $12. After going back to the groomer and asking about this, the groomer got very defensive with an attitude. Keep this in mind if you take your pet here. They can just claim that your dog misbehaved and charge you extra without having to prove anything. Will never take my dog here again. read more

Dropped my puppy off for a haircut today, she has had two cuts at this location before and did fine. Today they only gave her a bath and said she wasn't used to the grooming tools for the haircut so they wouldn't do it. The staff seemed untrained and completely unprofessional in how all of this was handled. I had to pay $30 for a bath I could've given her at home when what she really needed was the haircut. As a teacup morkie, her hair is long and fine and needs to be kept trimmed. I'm very disappointed in Petco, especially since she's been there before and had a nice cut, I even started getting her groomed at a young age to get her used to it. I would never recommend this grooming salon to anyone who cares about their dog or getting quality service for your money. I had to book the appointment a week ahead and was not only not able to get the service I requested but charged for it none the less. Rude staff and terrible customer service. Veronica did an awesome job grooming my chocolate lab. He hasn't been that clean and soft since he was a puppy. Everyone that petted him automatically knew he has just been washed. It's been at least 2 weeks since I took him in and he still smells great. Definitely brining him back! read more

We made an appointment to get our dog groomed. The clerk seemed confused but gave us an appointment. We showed up and found out he did not put it in the computer. We drove all the way for nothing. Terrible clinic experience! After buying hundreds of dollars of pet supplies here for our pets and a new puppy, we waited weeks for the Petco immunization shot clinic. After waiting our turn I was told that it was a few minutes after 11 o'clock and that it was too late for our puppy to receive the shot. The smarmy vet tech said that he could "ask" the vet who was giving another animal a shot a few feet away if an exception could be made. They whispered a bit and said 'no'. It was rude. Petco had talked up their services and has now shown how much they care about the customer. With my son's new puppy, our pet purchases extended to 5 types of pets needing supplies. Now we will ONLY hop at Pet Smart in Sand City or the pet shops in Pacific Grove. We will NEVER shop in a Petco again. I will be sharing my experience with everyone at the dogpark as well. (2 stars because one sales girl, a dog trainer, has been so helpful to me recently with new puppy items.) read more

Sergio is a great groomer, but I had to stop coming here because the scheduling got mucked up for the third time. Frustrating to bring your dog only to be told that she isn't on the schedule. The last time I had to reschedule two weeks after she's due because Sergio called in sick. Second time it was due to a new employee who had messed up the schedule for many folks and the first was a "misunderstanding." Sorry, but I'm done. read more

If negative stars were possible....oh man. This store is disgusting and the managers and ridiculously rude. One of them, screams and cusses at employees IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. I'm pretty sure that you're not supposed to talk to employees like that behind closed doors....why do it in front of customers. You talk to an employee who doesn't know the answers to anything or where things are, so you wait for a manager's response, and they literally sit in their office while employees stand their embarrassed and needing help. It's very unprofessional, employees shouldn't be thrown to the wolves and left alone not knowing what to do! Their animals are always in poor conditions, I've stopped going there because no matter how many times, or how many people you get to complain, nothing changes. The animals are kept in FILTHY habitats, most of their fish go belly up, sometimes I've gone in there and seen dead mice/hamsters/etc. and when you tell someone? They just shrug it off like it's not big deal, or like they see it so often that dead animals don't even phase them anymore. Also, don't bother calling the "hotline" number posted on the animals' habitats. It goes to a company in India and your complaint gets thrown away. read more

I had my dog groomed today. I explained how I wanted my poodle cut. The male groomer ignored ever thing I had said and my dog was shaved- even his tail was shaved to the skin! The shave was uneven and he cut the ears uneven! His face was shaved and groomed exactly opposite than I had wanted/requested/explained! I have a very cute dog and the groomer actually made my dog look absolutely horrible! When I complained his response was, "Cool." His grooming skills were extremely poor, he lacked the ability to listen to his client, had not introduce himself and zero customer service skills. DO NOT take your dog there for grooming!!!! read more

While in Monterey made appointment for the following weekend in person at the store. I have never done dog grooming before so this was a first. Very excited I showed up on sat morning at 9 15 appt was for 9 30. They were closed sign said opens at 9 ? So I waited until 10 and a lady flew into the parking lot with no shoes yelling a string of cuss words because she over slept. I went in and they said I needed a proof of vaccinations . They Did not tell me to bring one. They said sorry you will have to come back another time. I explained I lived 60 miles away and I would bring the next time they said no way sorry. Amanda did an AMAZING transformation on my dog, Bronte. My dog is very old and, in the past, has been difficult to groom, so I put it off. My husband brought my dog in for her much needed grooming at Petco, and came out looking fresh and beautifully groomed. I am sold on Amanda. I called and thanked her for the great service, and, to my big surprise, she said Bronte was well-behaved during the groom....she must have the magic touch. I will surely return! read more

Absolutely worsted experience ever! Not only did they take over and hour and a half longer than they told me it would be for my dog to get groomed, but then they completely had shaven him when we very clearly only asked for a trim. Not only was it WAY shorter, but it have very choppy. Luckily the woman working (not the person who groomed my dog) was understanding of my frustration and extreme dissatisfaction and told me I did not have to pay. I was devastated especially because we had planned photos coming up next week! When I got home I realized that they had cut my dogs neck pretty badly! And no one mentioned it to me when I am to pick him up! Upon closer examination, he still had matted hair on his ears, and a very uneven cut throughout. I will never, I repeat NEVER take my dog back there and I suggest you don't as well! I will be looking to contact a manager about this! DON'T GET YOUR PET GROOMED HERE. I took my toy poodles here to get groomed, once. Why only once? Because the groomer did not wash the dogs, didn't even look like they had been groomed. I asked for clean paws and short all over. They did one, uneven length all over (it looked terrible). And in addition to that, both of my dogs' ears were bleeding, and their nails had been cut to the quick! I started crying when I saw what condition my dogs were in and asked for a full refund. The manager refused, only giving me back like $7 (on a $80+ bill). And do you know what the manager's excuse was?! "The groomer hasn't been feeling well today." Really?! I should have gone after them, but I'm military and I was leaving soon. What a shame. read more

Just no. I went in Petco recently with my boyfriend, my brother, and my cousin. After spending about 30 minutes in the store, we found that the salt water section was infested with sick fish who carried ick and looked beat up. They had clown fish in uneven numbers in one tank, which to people who don't know salt water fish is probably okay. but it's not. Clown fish survive in pairs. The two bigger ones will pick on the smaller one until it dies. There were dead frogs in one of the aquariums and a few dead fish floating around in the fresh water section. I saw the snakes and they looked to be fairly healthy (to me anyhow, someone who had never owned a snake anyhow) so i decided i would save one from the inevitable demise it faced in this store. I came back the next day (Friday), bought a baby corn snake and all it's necessities and went home. My older brother, the owner of his own marine aquatics store and a former pet shop, told me my snake looked highly unhealthy and he needed extra care. Well, he was right. My snake died yesterday and it crushed me. Poor thing had only been with me for three days and i did everything according to what the employee at petco told me to do to no avail. I highly recommend that if you plan on buying pets, please, please, please go somewhere else until Petco gets a handle on their animals. I plan on writing a letter to their headquarters and letting them know what my experience was. If you plan on buying salt water fish i suggest Picture Perfect Pets. They have an amazing selection and the employees have been trained properly. sorry petco, but you bum me out. read more

I took my small breed dog in for a simple groom. So I was assured when I left my dog. When I returned my dog was in full anxiety. The hair cut was more of a crew cut and my dog was bleeding on the chest, tail and had severe razor burn on the private area with no hair left. The female groomer stated it was due to matting however in previous grooms, matting was never a problem!! I will never take my innocent in again for grooming, nor will I recommend the grooming department at Monterey Petco! The store manager showed good customer service skills and was appreciated! read more

I go to this store often and it's a hit or miss with the staff when you can find anyone on the floor. If I have a question I have to stand in line at the register and ask the cashier. Seems there is a lot of turnover. However my last visit needs comment because my experience was with the store manager. The register was not working properly and obviously a new employee was being trained at the same time. The store manager had to be called out from the office for both customers in front of me to "fix" the register. My turn came and again the store manager was called out....she certainly didn't make anyone feel good about the situation with her tone and impatience she took with both employees. I felt sorry for the employees! She made absolutely no contact with any customers during any of this situation. I think the manager should have stayed on the floor and set a positive example for her employees until the register issue was resolved. read more
