This place is great! After having a bad experience at PetSmart (off of Nicholson) we decided to make an appointment to have our smaller Great Pyrenees groomed here, and they were able to fit us in to an afternoon appointment. Our dog came out with a pep in her step, beautifully white and smelling like cupcakes! The staff here is so friendly and you can tell that they really care about the dogs they are caring for! The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because our Pyr's appointment has run over everytime. This isn't the hugest deal since I know she is a lot of dog for when they start to get busy in the late afternoon. Overall, I highly recommend this place if you are in search of a great place to have your large dog groomed. They love dogs of all sizes, whereas the Nicholson Lane Petsmart will actually try to talk you out of scheduling with them if you have a larger dog. read more

This review is for the grooming salon only. I have a nervous dog and I wanted to avoid a long day for him at the groomers. This Petco offers expedited grooming Mondays-Fridays which means that the grooming time is supposed to be cut in half, and the dogs don't have to stay caged for very long. Sounds great, right? I figured I'd drop my dog off for an 8am appointment, pick him up a couple hours later, then head to work. The first time I went in, the groomer never showed up. She apparently called out at the last minute and no one bothered calling to cancel her appointments. Stuff happens though so it's fine - no need to get on Yelp. But then I figured I'd give it one more shot. Today, I arrived promptly at 8am. The groomer didn't arrive until 8:15. I'm not a morning person so I can understand, although she didn't even acknowledge it or apologize. But then it turns out they didn't schedule me correctly as an expedited appt so I'd have to leave my dog there for the full length of a typical appointment. The whole point was to avoid that! All she could offer was to re-book the appointment. Why would I give this salon a third chance? I'd rather pay more elsewhere for some actual service. read more

We take our little pup here for his baths and grooming needs. He seems to enjoy it and typically comes back clean. Every now and then he comes back home and has clumps of hair that still need to be removed, but it's rare. The staff here allows for our dog to kiss them in their mouths. I had a really bad experience in this store while purchasing two guinea pigs. After experiencing the things happened to us, I hope this review can bring immediate attention from the manager or store leader to message in private. They mixed up the sexes of my piggies, we ended up buying two piggies of different sex! It's a potential threat of matting! Besides, one of the piggies, the female one caught ringworms, the vet told us it's probably from the store too. I set up a 2PM appointment at the groomer's. The grooming area was small and filthy! It took almost 20 minutes for someone to greet us even though two female groomers were available, but one was on her cell phone. A male groomer had to remind both that I had a 2PM appt. At 2:20, we were finally greeted. Dumb & Dumber attempted to sign my dog in but they couldn't find my reward #. One took me to the registers and called a "manager" who was just as useless and rude. I attempted to return an item so this would allow them to look up the reward #. I overheard the so-called mgr say "if she bought something over $50, I'd look it up", glares at me, then walks away. Ignorance is bliss! At this point, I decided to keep my item, ditched the appt, then went straight to PetSmart! Petsmart Rockville is clean and fully stocked. Employees are professional and smart. Also, the grooming area is clean, groomers and manager greet you timely - with a smile, discuss the services to be rendered, pick up time, and prices. We went to the vetco clinic today. I have to say I was not impressed with the staff. They don't show you a menu of vaccines or offer up much info on what's available. They ask "what do you want?" - well what do you have to offer? I was sold a package deal. She didn't offer anything other than the one package when I guess they have a few different packages online. There was a backup in the line so they definitely had time to tell me what they recommend. So afterwards I'm a little concerned that the vet had 3 tubes for 4 vaccines. I'm wondering if they missed one. read more

DO NOT BUY DRY FOOD HERE IT IS INFESTED! The dry food section at this store is completely infested with moths. When I went to buy cat food today I saw some bugs flying around in the isle as I entered it. When I bent down to grab a bag it was stuck to the shelving with cobwebs/spider webs and there were at least 10 dead moths sitting on that package alone. Moths flew out at me for disturbing it. Not only is this food unsafe for your pets to be eating, if it is hatching near your food it will infest anything grain related. It is unsanitary and unsafe for them to have this kind of condition in their store! I mentioned this after being thoroughly disgusted to the cashier at the front and told her that it was the reason I was leaving without buying anything and that I wanted to be sure the store was aware of what was going on. She said she was new but that the store was aware of it. She didn't seem interested to report it to a manager or anyone. Obviously no one at the store cares if they do know judging by the quantity of infestation going on and the fact that there were cobwebs sticking to the food I picked up.I also had a sneezing fit in the rodent department. While the cages looked clean and the animals content the odor was off putting. As someone who has raised multiple sets of rats I've never been allergic to being around them before. I used to go to this store all the time. Everyone was friendly and it was clean but now it is absolutely disgusting! I hope they get it cleaned up asap so no one ends up getting sick! read more

As a Rockville local, I often visit Aquarium One, Congressional Aquarium, and Petco. In recent months, Petco has definitely made a 180 in revamping their saltwater fish section. They have wayyy better prices than Aquarium One and Congressional Aquarium; and the new staff make an extra effort to take care of their increasingly diverse livestock (new shipment every Wednesday). The staff there seems to be shy at first, but once you start asking questions, I often find myself just talking about the hobby for like an hour haha. I am never pressured to buy anything as I visit the 3 local fish stores every Wednesday-Thursday to see if there is anything worth getting... Its like a free trip to the zoo! I have purchased my pistol shrimp, yellow watchman goby, and a clown fish at Petco and they all seem to be doing fine (~3 months). I am aware that Petco has a terrible reputation in caring for their livestock, but this store in particular is great! I am only speaking on behalf of their saltwater section; I don't know anything about reptile or rodent care... If you want fish supplies or common fish/inverts, go to Petco. If you want live rock/sand, live food, or desire exotic livestock, go to Congressional Aquarium (across the street from Petco). If you want corals, go to Aquarium One. read more

What is the deal with the Petco?! They all seem to lack basic sanitation and this particular store is no exception. I went here last Sunday for the low cost vaccination van that drops by every other week and was one of those sad souls stuck waiting in a slow moving line that snaked all around the store. This gave me the opportunity to check out every isle in great detail. There was dried dog pee everywhere, no trash bags on the "clean up stations," mice poop sprinkled all around the dog food shelving, and fish with fungus. I would advise against bringing your dog in here unless it has all of its vaccinations up to date. read more

I bought puppy food here and my dog refused to eat it for hours. Finally he reluctantly ate, and this routine went on for the next few days. Thought he was just getting adjusted since I just got him, so I didn't pay much mind to it. He vomited every morning for the past few days and I couldn't figure out why. Hazard:this location is crazy on the weekends! There are a lot of people bringing in their pets for check ups and/or looking to adopt. I usually go to this location Monday through Thursday when it's less hectic. There is always someone there to answer questions and be of service. My dog is now a year and two months old. Being that He was my first pup ever, I needed a lot of questions answered and the employees here have always been so helpful to help me along the way. I like to shop at Petsmart as well on my way to shop at Petco just because they are more for the animals. (They just took a hit up to $10,000, getting rid of dog treats that were making dogs ill) but I have a sister store "unleashed" which I love and is closer to home. I dropped of my Toy Poodle for a Bath with haircut, Long Hair SM, the Pick 3 Spa Package that included nail buffing, Teeth brushing and a Blueberry facial. I also paid for rush service because my dog is a senior. The Total for all services came to $95. and I was told that my dog will be ready in about 2 hours. I received a call after 40 minutes that my dog will be ready in 5 minutes for pick-up. When I asked why she was ready in such a short time I was told by the groomer because she was a good girl??! When I picked her up upon closer inspection I saw red marks on the lower abdomen and something that locked like a clipper cut that had bled near the genitalia. When I pointed this out to the groomer she insisted that my dog did this by licking herself. I did not want to get into an argument with her in front of my dog. I went to pay, waited in line and paid exactly 1 hour after drop of with all the gift cards I had left from Petco. My dog will not ever go back to this place! Btw. the groomers appeared to have no other dogs and sat chatting on display when I walked by the window to my car. My dog was trimmed sloppy, uneven and the Blueberry facial (if it was applied) obviously did not do anything for her fur around the eyes this time. I have over 40 years of experience with getting dogs groomed! Often staying with the dog the whole time. It is an UTTER IMPOSSIBILITY to do all the services I had requested to the minimum acceptable standard in 40 minutes!!! I don't even want to imagine what took place in these 40 minutes. read more

My dog is my precious child, so I am definitely skeptical of the places that I use to groom her. We were in town visiting friends and decided to bring her PETCO for a bath and haircut. Definitely reasonable prices, and it made me feel a lot better that the groomer asked for what type of cut and went through exactly how she was going to cut my dog's hair. Since we were out of town, we just gave her the number for our vet and they were able to call and find out when her rabies vaccine was. Our dog doesn't seem traumatized, smells, and looks great. Eh, this place is okay. It takes care of my pet shopping needs. Its almost impossible to find someone to assist you if you need help. I've also encountered very long lines here, usually only one register is open. I've never noticed personally any sanitary issue except that occasionally the fish tanks will look a little.. grimy. The only reason I'm giving this store two stars instead of one is because the first time I went in there the staff was very helpful. The manager and one of the groomers came up to me. The groomer persuaded me to bring my cocker spaniel in to get groomed there instead of the more expensive (or so I thought) place I usually take him to. At the time I already had an appointment set for the usual groomer so I decided I would at least give Petco a try the next time he needed a haircut and figured I would save a few bucks. Fast forward about two months. So I bring my dog in for a "full groom" which includes a brush out, wash, haircut, blowdry, ear cleaning, nail trim, anal gland expression, and fragrance, which are the same services I recieve at the higher end groomer I usually go to. When I return and look at the bill I see that not only did the groom cost just as much as I normally pay ($65!), they also tacked on an additional $11 for the additional services (I guess the bath, nails, etc.) which I assumed was included. The grand total after tax was nearly $77. I've been to several different groomers and I've NEVER had a groom for a cocker spaniel cost that much. And this was at a chain pet store! I probably should have gotten a quote before I left but still! Then, to put the icing on the cake, they tell me that they weren't even able to cut his nails because he was being difficult. He absolutely hates having his nails trimmed but I've never had a groomer tell me that they weren't able to get it done, which makes me question how professional the groomers are. AND they still charged me for it! At least if you're not gonna trim the nails take the charge of my bill. Needless to say I will NOT be returning to the Petco in Rockville for grooming anymore. read more

Very, VERY dirty store. Picked up some frisbees I was going to get for my dog and they had dried up dog pee all over them! This is the second time that has happened, and clearly not just that someone had just peed on them. The bathroom has spider webs everywhere and the floor has god knows what all over it. I wanted some fish and after waiting forever to get someone to help me he got me the fish out of one tank but ran off before I could tell him I wanted fish from another tank. Once I finally got him to come back, unwillingly, he took the 3 fish out that I wanted and hung them on the side of the tank, walked away and began testing another customers water and talked to her in another aisle helping her with something, completely forgetting that I was even there or that he had left my fish hanging there. I work with clients and I know you can get pulled in 8 different directions, but there weren't that many people there when I was there and I know you can always tell a client I'll be with you in a minute. There was zero excuse for his attitude. I waited patiently for him to decide he wanted to help me again, which was about 15-20 minutes later after he was done with the other lady who he started helping while he was in the middle of helping me. If I didn't want the fish as much as I wanted them I would have walked out. The associates never seem happy and the place is very dirty and unsanitary. Clean your store and hire some people that give a crap. Won't be going back any time soon. read more

I took my puppy to their "puppy socialization class" and it was the worst!!! It was like "Thunderdome"!!! Very disappointing.... I used to take my other dog there when she was small, and Bridgette did an AMAZING job in leading a structured and informative class. I love getting my dog groomed here. I highly recommend Max! I couldn't believe how handsome my fur baby looked and he was excited when I picked him up. I usually judge a new groomer by my dog's temperament after a grooming session. His tail was wagging and I could tell that Max made him feel very comfortable. The new pet hair stylists are magnificent! They cut my dogs hair to the exact length I requested and got all the knots out with no problem at all, in which the previous stylists would always shave my dog instead because "the knots make it impossible to cut". I stopped here on the way home from adopting a dog to purchase a crate and some basic supplies. My rescued pup was terrified so I held her in my arms the entire time. The manager saw my trembling pup and helped me find everything I needed very quickly so I could get her home ASAP. He even helped me take my purchases out to my car so I could carry my dog! I didn't spend much time there but the store seemed clean and well organized and the all the employees were genuinely kind and helpful. I come here for mostly cat and reptile supplies. Cat supplies-wise, the selection is very wide. They have more of a selection than the petsmart I usually go to. From food to toys to litter. Reptile section is pretty much a joke. Pricey and very limited. read more

I just walked in to buy a product for my pet and was tracked down by the employee who had given me directions to that aisle only to be told that I was being a bad pet owner by purchasing that product for my dog. First of all, I didn't ask. Second of all, I explained that my trainer had told me to purchase this product and she continued to tell me it was the wrong judgement call. Third of all, if you feel so strongly that about a product being bad, maybe don't work for a store that sells that product all over the country. Bottom line - I didn't come for advice. I left the store unhappy and without the product since I didn't feel like being further shamed for purchasing it. Bad customer service is definitely part of the reason why Amazon is putting big chain store fronts like this out of business. I purchased an item online and got an email saying it is ready to pick up. And literally at the same minute, I got another email saying it is already picked up. I visited the store and told one of the cashier and he seemed like a new employee so did not know anything. Another cashier with long beard down to his belly button helped him. He said he cannot do anything since it is a system error. He also said that we had to purchase the same item as new transaction and ask customer service to cancel the online transaction. I asked him that the in-store price is 50% more expensive than the online price and I already paid for the item, so if I could just take one. Then he said no, with a very rude tone and manner. He did not even ask a manager or try to help us. I felt like being ignored. How can someone working in customer service industry answer a customer's question like that? I did not even ask for a that much impossible favor. So I did as what he said, because I really needed the product at that moment since my puppy has been being thru severe diarrhea but the vet was closed because it was Sunday. I came home and contacted customer service and the rep said they could not cancel this transaction since it says it has been already picked up. It is not that the rep did not want to help us like the cashier guy didn't, but the rep is just not able to do it cause the system won't allow him/her to. He/She said that I had to go back to the store and ask them to refund. WTH??? So I did go back to the store the next day and told everything to another cashier guy. This guy was so helpful and caring. He apologized me that they had a few online order system errors that day and refunded the in-store transaction so that I could keep the product with the online price I paid for. So eventually at first place they were able to let me take the product, not make me pay double and not make me go thru all this. The cashier guy with long beard, he did not know anything but just "helped" me that rudely. I have shopped quite a few times at this store, used Vetco for all my two cats and one puppy, and even enrolled in training class for my puppy, but now this guy is the reason I won't be shopping at this store ever again. I really do not want to even see this guy's face again. I'd rather drive 10 more mins to shop at another Petco store. You should fire him seriously. He has a poor customer service manner. read more

Came to Petco on 12/30/17 since there is a wide variety of options available comparing to the Unleashed closer to me. Went in for a new set of bowls for my two little pups, leashes and to exchange a sweater that was too small for my shih tzu. There was a adoption event happening at the time so we got to say hi to all the doggies there. LOVE the variety of clothes they have, LOVE. Got the stuff I needed and a bit more. Headed over to the fish department and was considering getting fishes. One of the gentlemen assisting my sister, friend and I was nice and helpful. The other guy we asked seemed irritated that we wanted to know how to care for the fishes. Obviously if we are asking is because we are interested. Ending up not getting any fish since he said we would have to buy the bowl and items and 2-3 days later return for the fishes. Previously, when we had fish we would buy everything the same day but it was fine. At the register I explained to the cashier Ryan, I did not have my receipt for the sweater but had the card I paid with and phone number. He said he wouldn't be able to exchange since I didn't have a receipt with an attitude. Okay fine I'll take it back and look for my receipt or go to unleashed where they have helped me before. Since he said he wouldn't be able to exchange the sweater for another one (bigger size and longer) I let it go but he told me he went ahead and did the exchange but that it was the only time he would. Yet it seemed as if he was able to pull up the transaction. He made it sound like he was doing me a favor. I understand but there was no need for an attitude and rude tone of voice. As I was paying and looking down at the pinpad my sister and friend notice he rolled his eyes at me. I really love the options available at this store but it's not a store I would recommend or return depending on my pups needs. read more

Second attempt this morning and they couldn't wash our dog because they needed a rabies certificate. Never once was this told to us. Both first booking and second. Manager was rude. We have a Sheltie that does not like to be groomed because of his undercoat, but he loved his grooming experience at Petco in Rockville. I have taken him there twice and each groomer that I used had a way that made him feel comfortable and beautiful. I was pleased with the respectful, courteous, and professional groomers.
