I took my dog Zeus to get his first ever hair cut. I thought it will be excited for him And myself. He is only 10 months old a Cain Terrier. Upon arriving I met with a female who asked me what cut. I told her I did not want his cut to be a lot. I want his hair to grow. When I picked him up two hours later he looked like Simba from the Lyon King ‍‍ . Terrible cut. She didn't know how to handle him. She then told me his hair was noted. Not really. He is a baby still. She cut the hair on his face good. Other than that I will never take him back. I was in the area a little while ago after I took my pup to the dog park. His nails were getting a bit long so called in first to see if appointments were necessary. I was told there were only walk ins so I made the trip there. I usually go to PetValu for nail trimmings but the groomer wasn't in that day. Plus it was the same price here ($10) so I thought I'd give it a try. Never again. I went in and filled out some paperwork since it was my first time, showed my dog's vaccination records, and the lady at the front brought him in right away. I was going to walk around and grab some treats/toys for him while he got his nails clipped, but thank god I decided to stay and watch. She didn't know how to handle him AT ALL. My pup is a 45 lb Shepherd Mix, normally very calm at PetValu getting his nails trimmed, but this time, he seemed frantic when she put him on top of the table. She didn't ask anyone to come help and hold him even though he was backing away from her, basically falling off the table. At one point he did slip and fall, but she was able to reach out and grab him. Eventually, someone came over and held him a bit, but you could clearly tell he was very stressed out. Five minutes later, she brought him out and said that his anal glands ruptured while she was clipping his nails... Wow. I wonder why that happened. I couldn't get him out of there quick enough. Upon examining his nails, some weren't even clipped.... The ones that were clipped were NOT done well either. I was furious at this point, just paid my bill, and left. I had to bring him to PetValu later that week to get them redone. When I went back to the dog park the next day, I told some regulars there what happened. Turns out someone went with their Rottweiler recently to get his nails clipped too. She said she heard him crying from the other side of the store and she ran back to see what happened. Same experience, they were not holding him on the table, he was stressed out, and some of his nails weren't clipped. She normally goes to PetValu as well. Lesson learned, if you need any grooming done, don't bring your pet here. They just don't care, as many other reviewers have said as well. PetValu is by far the best, and I will stick to them from now on. read more

This was my 6th time at Vetco at Petco for veterinarian medical services. I had three cats inoculated then neutered/spayed after some incestual relations. I made the appointment from the very elementary online system. For my first visit, i thought I could get the surgery right away but then learned that spots are limited and must be reserved over the phone or in person. It took some time getting used to the idea of going to Vetco before the store opens since pet drop-offs are usually between 8 and 9am. I have to open the sliding doors manually and then "trespass" through the store to get to the hospital section. I ran into another customer on my way out who was reluctant to enter. I have high praise for the entire staff including those who came from other stores to fill in. The worse part of the experience was only the cats' crying because of the car ride going there. As for the store, they do not carry cheaper brand cat food which I need for 6 cats. I found the cashiers friendly enough. read more

I have been to this Petco before and have had no issues till today. I went in and asked an employee who was stocking shelves if they had Fancy Feast cat food and was given a dirty look and was told they no longer sold low grade food like that. My cat unfortunately won't eat higher grade foods so to make a customer feel bad for feeding their cat lower grade food is really rude. When I found something else I needed, I went to the cashier who was equally as rude and short with simple greetings. I will never come back to this location as all the employees are quite rude and uppity. You need to retrain your staff to be happier and more pleasant with their customer. I will continue to go to PetSmart as their employees are always pleasant and extremely helpful. read more

Note - I do not shop here for pet food. This review is only for their grooming salon. I took my dog to their competitor for grooming and they couldn't handle simply trimming his nails and made me leave, stating that my 40-pound beagle mix is too "aggressive." Since Petco isn't far, I decided to take my dog here. I have since been back several times. Each time the groomer named Saul is the one who ends up trimming my dog's nails. For some reason, my dog doesn't mind when Saul cuts his nails. It's like Saul is some type of dog whisperer who can make even my very timid dog calm down and relax. I have short-haired dogs, so I don't get their hair trimmed, but I would most definitely recommend Saul for any type of grooming. He's excellent! On the basis of the grooming salon ONLY, I give this Petco location 5 stars. read more

My boyfriend and I had no idea what to expect coming into this class, but we were tired of our dog not listening to us at home and in front of our friends and family. We decided to go to this Level 1 adult class although our pup is 7 months old. We really could not be happier with our results thus far! Before we even passed level 1, we took advantage of a sale on Level 2 classes. We thought we were doing so many things correctly, just to find out we were very, very wrong. YouTube did not help and since day 1 of training at Petco, we saw immediate results. Kevin teaches the owners how to command the dog and he makes it really easy, that's the funny part. DO NOT bring your animal to Petco in Totowa to get groomed!! They tore my dog apart, leaving her with open sores and scabs from the clippers! They clipped her nippples and left them oozing with infection! When I arrived to pick up my dog , the groomer was on her phone texting while my dog was on the table with the noose around her neck still waiting for the rest of her cut. My dog did not eat for the following two days nor drink water nor sleep!! She hid in her dog house and would not comE ouT which is highly unlike her! Worst experience with a groomer ever! Awful petco I'll never come back i always go to the one on route 3. Do yourself a favor and go to that one not this one! They don't honor the return policy, and staff is rude and demeaning (at least the ones I dealt with) took the same toy they refused to exchange to my usual petco and they exchanged my toy no problem whatsoever. This review is to express what a wonderful job Joe did grooming our dog, Hudson. He immediately started interacting with our pup and started inspecting his teeth, ears, nails and fur. Hudson doesn't particularly like getting his nails cut and he was able to find a way to calm him down/distract him so that Hudson could get his nails trimmed!! Hudson has a sensitive left ear and Joe was very careful cleaning it! He went above and beyond grooming our pup and we are so thankful!! read more

Let me start off by saying the store itself is great. Always stocked with the dog food we buy and the staff is very friendly and informative ! POOCH PLAY IS ANOTHER STORY ! It shouldn't be called pooch PLAY because there is NO play allowed. The minute your dog wants to play he/she will get yelled at and pulled away. It's as though they just want your dog to sit around and do nothing. I frequent dog parks regularly. I know my dog and how he interacts with others. I've NEVER had a problem, but apparently average dog interaction is a problem for this staff. So if you have an active dog/pup that likes to run around and "BE A DOG" I do not recommend pooch play, you're better off leaving your dog at home. Also if you are going to give this place a go. Make sure your dog eats and drinks before heading over. Every time I've brought my dog with his lunch, it is never given to him and when he gets home he drinks and eats like he's been starved. It's safe to say my days of giving pooch play another shot are over ! It's not a fun environment for your dog. Do no waste your money. The staff in Pooch Play is not very friendly once you walk out that door, trust me and watch the cameras ! They are not very friendly to the dogs and frankly uninterested. read more

(Grooming Salon Review) Service is fine, however price structure is ridiculous. They basically can't give you a quote because they decide what they will charge you while working on your dog. I asked exactly what that meant (i mean is it going to be more like $20 or $50??) and the head groomer told me, see this dog (he picked up a little dog) it could be $40 but you know maybe I'll charge $45 or $50. Maybe it takes a long time, maybe I feel like washing it with a special shampoo, maybe this maybe that. It's whatever I decide, he said. They ended up giving my dog services I did not ask for like special smelling shampoos and a special type of bath. My dog wasn't matted or anything. They made me feel like they were trying to meet a quota and so whoever's turn it was got the extra price added. Stay away. They are thieves. read more

Took our dog Guiness here for the first time today to get a grooming. Guiness is normally a VERY shy and hesitant dog that doesn't warm up to strangers easily. Joe got down on the floor to make Guiness comfortable. When we went to pick Guiness up Joe said to hide and watch how well Guiness interacted with him. We watched as Guiness playfully gave kisses and jumped on Joe. Normally Guiness can't wait to get out of a grooming but he didn't want to leave Joe. Amazing! Grooming- I love their grooming department. I take my dog Jaxon to Jose and he is the nicest most gentle groomer. Jax is always nervous when he's about to go in but you can tell he really likes Jose and takes well to him bc Jose calms him down and makes him feel comfortable. I feel completely content leaving him with Jose. My dog always leaves there looking handsome and smelling great :) Store- the store section has a great selection of stuff. This Petco has a great offering of pet food, apparel and toys. The store seems pretty clean and the cashiers are always super friendly and helpful. They have a large selection of coats and dog shoes, more than I've seen at other pet stores. Saul, the groomer, is hands down the best groomer I've ever taken my dog to. I have a one and half-year-old black miniature poodle named Murphy and comes out perfectly every time I have Saul groom him. He takes his time and genuinely cares about your dog. Murphy had a lot of mats and Saul took care of all of them without just shaving him down. I'm 100% happy with the job he did. I highly recommend Saul to anyone. read more

I used their dog wash today and was very pleased with the results. They were very upfront with his anxiety about certain parts of the treatment, but called him down. In fact, I was more nervous than he was! Their price for a full service wash isn't bad, and I had a coupon. His fur looks terrific and nails too. The guy who took us in is a sweetheart too. Based on my two experiences, I think you could probably do better elsewhere. We had previously been using a different large pet supply retailer in Secaucus for grooming services (hint - their name also begins with "Pet"), and we loved them. The service was personalized and professional, and we never had an issue. However, we decided to give Petco in Totowa a try because since we moved to the area they are now closer to us than the place in Secaucus. I took our dog there twice, and each time the service was just OK. The first time, I had specifically asked for a teeth brushing, and when I picked him up it hadn't been done. When I asked they took him in the back and MAY have brushed his teeth, but I have no way of knowing (it seemed pretty quick). I'm also not quite sure that they trimmed his nails. The gold star is that they didn't charge me for the teeth brushing because of their error... so that was nice. The second time I dropped him off, they said it would take about an hour and 20 minutes (which is just about right) and that they would call me when he was ready. They even verified my home number and I gave them my cell number since I knew I'd be out running errands for awhile. Over two hours later I realized the time and still hadn't heard anything, so I called. There seemed to be some confusion, and finally someone was able to get the status of my dog and tell me that he was ready and waiting. I have no idea how long he was sitting around waiting to be picked up (but given he has short hair and doesn't need much maintenance, I'm guessing it wasn't exactly 5 minutes). And I'm guessing that whatever waiting area they have for the dogs isn't exactly spacious and comfortable. When I went to pick him up, he came out and looked/smelled great...but his leash was covered in a ton of light colored dog hair from somewhere - it literally looked like the leash had been sitting around on the floor of the grooming area. My dog is black, so I wasn't about to put the leash on him since it was only a matter of time before all of that hair ended up on him. The employee handed me the leash and was about to go back into another room when I pointed it out and asked him to clean the leash off (how could someone not notice a ton of light colored hair on a black leash?) They also didn't leash my dog before they brought him out to the main grooming waiting area, so when the door opened he ran right out (he's initially hyper and excited when he sees me). He would have gotten out into the main store area (and possibly outside the store altogether, since the exit door was right there) if I hadn't been right there to grab his collar (another safety issue is that the door leading to the grooming salon swings out, so a dog his size could easily jump on the door and open it quite easily). All this to say that compared to the service we got at the other place in Secaucus that also starts with "Pet", the Petco operation seems a bit disorganized and lacks some of the extra professional touches that I would expect them to have if they are supposed to be competing with the other big-box pet chain. I would normally say that you get what you pay for, but the prices between both places are very similar; Petco doesn't cost any less. I will continue driving further to take our dog to the Secaucus location, or else try out the services at the same retailer's Wayne location. But Petco is a no. I'll stick to Petco for food and toys. read more

This store is very well equipped with pet supplies. As a ferret owner, I was happy to see that this Petco carries many more toys and accessories compared to the others I've visited. One problem: when I visited, there was no one to assist me until I was ready to check out. The man I spoke to was kind, but I didn't need his assistance since I searched practically half of the store to find what I needed. There needs to be more people being proactive about helping customers, not waiting for us to approach them. I would suggest having some greeters present as guests enter the building, which is something I've seen other locations do. Apart from that, the cashier was very friendly and the store is super clean and well stocked. My husband and I love this Petco grooming. We have been bringing our dog here for about two years now. She loves all the groomers and they love her. I have never had a problem with any groomer at all. I really don't know what anyone else is talking about reading their reviews. All of the groomers know how to handle dogs. Some dogs get stressed out more then others. You do need to make an appointment, as they do not accept walk-ins for baths or grooming, not that I know of anyway. Sometimes I do need to wait a little bit when I arrive at my appointment time, but it's the same thing when you go to a doctor's office, you never walk right in, you always wait. I like to think they are taking their time with each individual dog and not rushing. I would want the same for my dog too! I highly recommend Petco grooming. read more

I've currently been standing here waiting for a mouse and crickets for 40minutes. I've went up to the cashier 3 times now as he calls someone to small animals everytime. Seems a bit busy as they only have 1 cashier and 7 or 8 customers waiting to pay. I come here once a week and mostly always bad service it is just super convenient for me to come here as it is the closest petco to me but anyone driving out of the way shouldn't come here for any type of crickets or mice for feeding purposes as the service is terrible ans always a wait. I took my dog to the groomers there for years. Quality of the work was inconsistent, while the price rise was very consistent. When they charged me $70 and returned my dog with dirt in the hair on the bottom of her ears, I decided I wasn't getting what I paid for.
