Petco is pretty much what you would expect from a pet store as far as supplies. This review is about their grooming department. My dog (a lab/retriever mix) was shedding all over the place, so I called Petco to see if I could get her undercoat removed. The person on the phone said that undercoat removal didn't do anything to help shedding and they could just brush her out thoroughly before and after her grooming and that would help. I was skeptical, but decided to take her in anyway. After about 4 hours, I went to pick her up. She was clean, but hair was flying off her as she jumped around in excitement of getting out of that place. I could actually pull tufts of hair out of her coat. When I complained that her shedding seemed even worse, I was told "that's just how labs are" and no matter what I said, that was the only response I could get. The next week I took her to a another groomer in Alamo and they removed her undercoat and the shedding was reduced by about 80%. So I'm giving Petco two stars for just being a convenient place to get pet supplies, but I am giving the grooming department zero stars. read more

I took my dog here for a shampoo and ear cleaning. I was greeted by the grooming lady about 3 minutes after arriving. My dog is shedding right now and they got rid most of the excess hair. She also smells really good. I would have given this place 5 stars if the people were a little nicer. They weren't mean or anything, they just weren't very nice and didn't seem too happy to be working. Overall, I would bring my dog here again. read more

Go anywhere else for puppy school besides this Petco. My friend and I both got new puppies and signed up for Dec.1st puppy school. After going through the process of packing up the puppies, which isn't easy in itself, we arrived to find out puppy school was cancelled and no one notified us. At this point the dogs (who had been crated) were extremely fussy. We asked for a refund on puppy school and were given the cold shoulder. They were very rude to both of us and acted as if we were putting them out. They never apologized and also took their sweet time checking us out. I was completely astonished by their lack of empathy and rudeness. Go elsewhere!! read more

STOP, and read this review about the bathing svcs. 1. Some of it is my fault, read on. 2. I agreed to the $51.00 because i thought the service included nail trim, bath and shedding care. I was mistaken they will only give the dog a bath and clip the nails. All for $51.00.!!! i was told that if i wanted them to take care of the shedding it'd be an extra $30.00!!!! are you serious!! i'm not a cheap person but i like to pay what a service deserves. I think this is waaay overpriced! 51 dollars just for showering my dog and clipping his nails come on. Specially when i know places like Pet food express, where i can rent a space to bathe my dog for $15.00 and it'd probably take me less time too. Think twice and smart before you pay for service folks, and 81 dollars to take care of a dog is waay too much. specially when my dog is only 7 months short hair, medium size. read more

Bummed out! Guinea pig appears to have ringworm! He is only 3 months old and we've had him for 2 days!! Most upsetting was that the sales clerk told us that the scabs on his ears were just "dry skin" and totally normal for baby guinea pigs. Two days later huge patch of fur has fallen off in front of ears and there is white scaly material on skin. Should have trusted instinct to hold off! (Guinea in cage above was itching itself incessantly.) Now darling daughter is in love with this cutie and we are looking at 10 days, if not multiple weeks, of fungal treatment and washing every piece of clothing and bedding that came in contact with him in the past two days. FUN!!! Taking him back to Petco and their "vet" since we've only had for 2 days, BUT never again will we buy from them; just too sad for kids and moms. A three month baby already sick with ringworm? Here's hoping he's okay. read more

The people who work in the grooming dept. are always in a sour mood . My poor scared dog refuses to go with any of them! Also, the grooming prices seem to differ between employees. I always seem to be charged more than I get quoted over the phone. I will find another place to take my dog. read more

Attention Goldendoodle Owners DO NOT bring your do HERE! The reason I came here is because I called in hopes for a sameday service. It was available probably because they are so over-priced that u would think u were taking them to a boutique like spa!! I was amazed that she was ready an 1 and 45 mints after drop off. She is a large breed with a ton of hair! I picked here up and her hair was still wet under both ears!!!! She cut her head after I specifically said Not too! The groomed said she had so much hair not matted mind u she just didn't like it that way so she cut it!!!!!!!! Nicked her behind her leg and didn't tell me I noticed when I got home and she was licking it!! HORRIBLE and OvEr priced oh and she said that she was happy that my dog was So sweet because the experience she has has with goldendoodles was bad! We know that cannot possibly be TRUE! I like this store. It has everything I need for my dogs and cats and I shop there at least once a month. But their reward program bad. They can't seem to get my email correct in order to send credits. Yet I get at least one email a day from them. I was credited with a couple of rewards after I complained. Once I use them I won't return. read more

Hypocrites. They have dead fishes in many of the tanks. They keep more than 10 goldfishes in a small tank, but won't sell me a gold fish because I don't have a 5 Gal tank. 5 Gal tank for just 1 Gold fish ? Then they won't sell me a guppy because my tank was not heated. Why would I need a heater when I have a thermometer in my aquarium that shows the water temp is always above 68-70degF ? Our house is heated in winter, why need a heater ? Nobody wants to kill their pets, why would they have such policy to assume people are abusive to their pets ? I kept fishes for years and never come across such requirements. read more

I took my dog into Petco yesterday with no appointment for grooming. I had been given the run-around by 10 other local pet groomers, either mobile or store-front. The very helpful young lady at Petco was able to get my dog in that day for a complete groom. He looked wonderful when I picked him up. The cost for a full-service grooming was 1/2 of that of the other groomers who dissed me. I will not waste my time searching again for a dog groomer. read more

We love Angela in the grooming department. She is extremely knowledgeable and excellent in handling dogs--they all seem to love her. We have a standard poodle and there are many different styles for them. As we prefer the more sporting styles, Angela always has suggestions for the perfect cut summer and winter. The price range is between $70 and $92 depending on the condition of the coat (tangles and such) We are generally at $70 which I have found to be very reasonable. Angela is the best. read more

I purchased some dog food that didn't agree with my puppy so I went in to see what could be done about it. Chelsea the dog trainer was working the floor and asked it I needed help then spent 30 minutes helping me with finding the correct food for my boxer. She even went above and beyond to get me a refund on the food I purchased previously. ( I didn't even bring in the unused food or receipt). Thanks Chelsea. read more

I have a chow mix who i bring in every few months, all i can say is I'm never disappointed i get their de shedding service every time. it may cost but its worth it i wont say he know longer sheds cause well i have a brain an understand short of Nair nothing will stop it. also i find the staff very friendly considering there locked in a room with barking dogs all day. read more

This store is nice. They have a variety of birds, rodents, fish, and cats. The animals there are well taken care of. I think they have a lot of PETA haters or stuck up rich people that are just normally rude. The workers here are nice and helpful. They have a variety of pet food, cat litter, and other pet supplies. The place is by Dragon 2000 and close to Ross in Walnut Creek. Sometimes, you will see people bring their dogs with them. read more

In less than a week from now, my indoor dog is going to have to be an outdoor dog all day long. Since he's not used to anything but lounging on his dog bed and sleeping 10 hours a day, I decided to shop around for a dog house in hopes of making him feel a little more comfortable during the day. I spent my Sunday night researching lots of different dog houses before finally settling on a cool log cabin style house. The price was what I was expecting so I went to place the order. Only problem was that it wouldn't ship from the Petco warehouse for five days, so I decided to call my local store to see if it was in stock. On Monday morning, I called in and spoke to a sales associate. I told her exactly what I wanted and in what size and she went to check her inventory. After a few minutes on hold, she returned to tell me that she had the dog house I was looking for. I asked her if that could be held for me until around 5pm and she said yes and took my name. When I arrived a little before 5pm, I was a little miffed to find out that there was nothing on hold for me and that the medium size dog house that I wanted wasn't even in stock. That's when store manager Daniel took over. He was apologetic from the get go, but made it apparent that he would make my inconvenience right. Being in customer service myself for years, what I appreciated the most was that Daniel took ownership of the situation and did not make any excuses. He gave me several options that were all more than generous and let me choose which product I wanted. My experience went from confused and upset to reassured and confident in the Petco brand. read more

I recently decided to purchase a bearded dragon as a class pet for my daycare classroom. I have never owned a reptile before so I did a bit of research and learned that they are great class pets and fairly easy to care for. I purchased the dragon on Monday, February 10th. I brought him back to the classroom and the kids were so excited. I noticed over the next few days that he wasn't eating much and didn't move hardly at all. Again I am not expert with these animals but something just didn't seem right to me. by Friday, February 14th I was really concerned with his health so I brought him back to Petco in Walnut Creek. I then learned that all of the dragons they had were infected with parasites! Not only did I learn that they were infected but I was also told by an employee that the store manager knew they were infected and the employee was told to sell them anyways. The employee that helped me genuinely seemed to care about the animals and was apologetic that I was knowingly sold a sick dragon. However I am disgusted that the store manager would sell sick animals instead of taking them to the vet. This dragon was a class pet, the kids would have been devastated if he had died in the classroom! Something needs to be done about the care of the animals at this store and the integrity of some of the staff! read more

I do not know much about dogs/cats (because of inbreeding), but they do not know how to take care of either reptiles or fish.Their fish tanks are far too overstocked, the fish are unhealthy, and are overpriced. As well, they keep bettas in miniscule jars, which are far too small, and even sell 1/2 gallon unheated bowls to jeep them in, directly next to others. Betta keepers: Bettas must be kept in AT LEAST a 2.5 gallon aquarium (5+ gallons is better) with sufficient filtration and heated to at least 75 degrees at the minimum. As well, they do not mention that bettas can make wonderful community fish and will rarely hurt others. For reptiles, I have noticed that their small tanks are full of different sized reptiles, which can hurt each other, and will occasionally have live crickets running inside a cage when the animals are obviously uninterested. In conclusion, spend your money somewhere else, where you will actually recieve good pets, such as the East Bay Vivarium or Albany Aquarium read more
