Told service writer that another shop told me that my front struts are bad and it would cost approximately $1,250.00 to replace them. Pete Smith did a check on my Truck and found that my Rack & Pinion unit was loose and they tightened the bolts (had Rack & Pinion replaced in a NJ auto repair shop last year), Pete Smith charged me around $60.00 for the fix. These guys are a great local auto repair shop! Honest, dependable, and they price their products competitively. I do my inspection there every year, and I just got tires, alignment, and brakes done by these guys. Parker (manager) is transparent about their cost and markup. I got tires from these guys for the same price that I would have paid at Costco. And they don't try to upsell you on extra maintenance work. This was my first trip here and wasn't super impressed honestly, they overfilled the car with oil, and they did not clean the oil pan or splash guard after the change and I had oil in my driveway a few days later from it seeping onto the tray and onto the concrete, then there goes the hub caps when I had tires rotated, they weren't put on even remotely correct and I lost one as a result and had to reinstall the other three to keep them from coming off, not a hard job for a tire and quick lube but like most places no attention to detail or care. read more

I was on my way to Wake Forest from Florida to visit family. On my way up my oil service light came on. I passed a business that was less than a half mile away. I considered going this morning but checked the reviews first and I'm glad I did. The reviews were not good and so I checked other places for my oil change. I came upon Pete Smith Tire about 12 minutes further but of course it turned out to be a great choice. It had great reviews from the Yelp community. I was greeted with courtesy and professionalism. I explained that I needed an oil change and they told me it should be now more than a half hour tops. Great! The price was the same or bit less than the 10 minute national chain. I had been hearing the dreaded "sqeal" from my brakes for awhile but didn't have the money to get them looked at. Plus, I just started a new job on the other side of the universe so didn't feel like I could all of a sudden take time off from work to get my brakes fixed. I wanted some place close to my house so I could ride my bike home if necessary... or catch a ride from a friend. I saw the positive reviews on Yelp and decided to give them a call... I asked Brent (who works in the front office) roughly how much it would cost and he was able to give me a range of prices off the top of his head. Contrast that to my calling NTB and they put me on hold for 10 minutes (presumably hoping I would get tired of waiting and hang up) and hemmed and hawed about how much even though I was just looking for a "best case" and "worst case" scenario. Brent was very accommodating an was able to schedule me for Saturday morning (I called late Thursday so felt pretty good about that). Got there and also noticed they do inspections... since I had just gotten a ticket for expired tags (oops!) I asked if they could do the inspection as well. Since my car was less than 3 years old and less than 70K miles, I didn't require the emissions inspection -- just the safety inspection (other places I have been too such as Jiffy Lube wind up charging you for both when the law didn't require it and you have to argue with them... and lose!). Got there and was waiting on the verdict on whether I would just need to brake pads or pads and rotors and after awhile (waiting in a very comfortable waiting room), Brent came out and said my pads were fine -- I didn't need any brake service at all. I was blown away. He took the time to explain to me that normal pads were 10 millimeters and my fronts were at 6 and my rears were at 4 so roughly and once they got to 2 mm, then I would probably need to get them replaced. He also explained that brakes make noise depending on road and weather conditions and compared it to basketball players sneakers squeaking on hardwood floor (friction). He also explained what worn out brake pads would sound like (you would hear the squeal as you were driving but it would go away when you applied the brakes). In short, he took the time to educate me rather than just sell me new brake pads when I didn't need them! As a result, instead of spending the 350 bucks that I expected to pay, I only paid 89 bucks for an oil change, tire rotation, and inspection. Brent explained that everyone there is paid on salary as opposed to most "corporate shops" (Jiffy Lube, NTB, etc) where they are paid on commission and obviously incentivised to sell parts and services that weren't necessary. I was so grateful for how I was treated -- educated instead of talked down to -- and appreciated the clean comfortable waiting room and reasonable cost service that Pete's has won my business for all routine maintenance going forward. I'm always looking to support a local business and heard great things from my neighbors about Pete's. First time I came in I got to hear about the family business and how things got started, which I love after working for my family's business for 14 years previously. I've been back 3-4 times already with both of our cars for oil changes and misc repairs but this last time took me by surprise. I was dropping off my wife's car for a couple repairs and oil change and just figured I'd wait it out and return some work emails, but they offered to drive me home since I just live around the corner. My car had a bolt embedded in the tire and I took it in and they fixed that and changed the oil immediately and they were very reasonably priced. The guys who work there are friendly and they didn't try to sell me anything else or tell me I needed a whole new tire, which I've had happened at other places in the past. I was also told at a place in Raleigh that my tires were bald and I asked theses guys today and they said I have quite a bit of tread left and showed me how to tell when they need replacing. They earned my trust and I'll definitely take my car back if something else goes wrong. It's a 20 minute drive for me from Raleigh, but worth it to find honest mechanics. The waiting room is comfortable and has free WiFi and coffee, do you can bring your laptop and still get work done while you wait. I think women especially get taken advantage of sometimes by mechanics, but these guys didn't do that and were very polite. I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a good mechanic. read more

I've been looking for a new go-to auto mechanic for a while now after trying a few other local places. I came heard great things on the WFCI forum on Facebook and they didn't disappoint. I went in for an oil change and an inspection. I had an amazing experience. They fit me right in and promptly called when it was ready. Every employee I interacted with was super nice, caring, and honest. This place is a family run business who's goal is to be open for 100 years. I think he mentioned this is their 72nd year in business. You can tell they put their heart and soul into their business to make their customers and staff happy. It was the Saturday after Thanksgiving and I needed to get my tire fixed fast. I had come home from traveling to find it flat. My normal place was closed and decided to give Pete Smiths, which is a little further away, a chance. Boy did I make the correct decision. The friendly guys had two cars on the lift when I walked in. A friend had given me a lift, so I told the guys it would just be putting a tire on the rim, not having to put it back on the car. They told me ten minutes max. Great speed and service. Before they put the tire on, the attendant behind the counter gave me an option of which tire I wanted. He told me the benefits and price of each, then gave me his opinion, the cheaper, of which one I should take. Been going here for years. Free wifi in the waiting area - first car place I know of that had this (many do know but they had it 3 years ago). The staff are always polite and courteous and, as far as I can tell, honest. I've had them tell me when things need to be changed, and when they don't. I've seen them tell someone when something wasn't safe to drive, and when it was probably a good idea to save their money on unnecessary work. They referred me to a dealer when they knew something was under warranty, where I'd get the work and parts for free. They said "we can do it here, but it'll be over $400, or you can go to the dealer and get it for free. Here's their number...". There's been some repairs they simply do not do (wheel rim repair, for example), and they've always given me reputable options for other service providers. For me, someone who's not a 'car guy', these guys have earned my trust over several years, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone (and I do). read more

Our van was having the classic whine you get when you are low on power steering. I'm all to familiar with this noise on our Dodge Grand Caravan, having replaced the rack & pinion, and a bypass for the power steering reservoir in the past. On this particular visit, I was *sure* we needed a new power steering pump. Another problem was a slight squeal when you turned the van off. James and his technician over at Pete Smith diagnosed the problem as a faulty alternator and serpentine belt. I was skeptical at first, but they were spot on. The van works great again. No more whine, no more squealing. They have a fair price (not cheap, but not dealer costs either). They communicate well with the customer and are actually a pleasure to deal with.
