Breaded and fried shrimp with lots of veggies and just a hint of Szechuan peppercorns to add some zesty sting. Recently, I discovered Peter Chang in McLean, and it has quickly become one of my favorite places to eat. From the outside, the restaurant appears modest, but inside, it's much larger than expected with a bright and modern motif--a refreshing change from the typical dark hues of many Chinese restaurants. I consider this style of food as elevated Chinese cuisine, perfect for those who appreciate high-quality, delicious dishes. It's great for a date night or for taking out your entire family or a group of friends. If it's your first time, like it was for us, the extensive menu can be a bit overwhelming. Fortunately, the friendly staff are more than happy to make recommendations. After a long day of travel, I was craving something savory but not too oily or spicy, so I started with a cup of pork wonton soup. The broth was soothing to my upset stomach, and the pork wontons were delicious. I could have been happy just with my soup. However, since my husband was with me, we also ordered the sizzling prawns and scallops with chives. Although the dish didn't come out sizzling as its name suggests, it did not disappoint. The scallops and prawns were cooked to perfection, and the chives (or leeks) were a perfect combination with the seafood. We paired this dish with stir-fried baby bok choy, enhanced with garlic flavors and cooked just right. Many restaurants tend to overcook their veggies, but Peter Chang gets it just right. The food was so great that I decided to take a chance with my upset stomach and order something with a bit more spice: the (not so) sizzling chicken with mixed peppers and basil. Oh boy, was it spicy! The dish featured jalapeño and Thai red peppers, and I highly recommend eating it with rice. If you like spicy food, this dish is simply heavenly, offering a great mix of heat, savory, salty, and a splash of acid. We will definitely be coming back. Always seems to be busy, and its no wonder why. The food here is simply good. Its located on the lower floor of a two story restaurant setup, and feels like an upscale Chinese restaurant. Service is always friendly, and honestly most of the patrons are too- my kids ended up playing a game with another tables kids while waiting for food. Evey dish I've had there has been great- the scallion pancakes are always in demand, and the different chicken and beef dishes always deliver on flavor. Also highly recommend the purple rice. It as a holiday fiasco. They took way too many orders to support a Christmas Eve pickup. We had designated 5:30 and when we finally got our food, it was 7 PM. Given their inability to meter orders and manage this unmitigated disaster, I have to say the staff was amazing with all of the pressure on them. They easily and probably should have been a lot crabbier given the irritated customers standing around waiting for their Christmas Day meals now coming out up to 90 minutes after their supposed order ready time. So the food... first time there and the take out was fantastic. The fried items stayed crisp and it's clear their ingredient quality is high. The Peking Duck was among the best I've had stateside. And how the duck skin was still crispy a half hour later at home, I don't know what sort of magic they did but it worked. The duck was also properly prepared and drained of excess fat so the duck itself was exquisite. They probably deserve 5 stars but given that this is a chain and they've been through more than one holiday season as a company, there is simply no excuse for the order fiasco. Peter Chang's latest spot is open in McLean, and I highly recommend reservations, because the restaurant is really popular! It took a little while to get a table, simply because of the crush of people picking up takeout orders and a few large parties coming in. But service was pretty speedy and food did not take too long (except, oddly enough, our appetizer, the vegetable dumplings, which came out last). The seafood fried rice was good, the dry pot Mushroom and pork belly was too, but the standout dish was the dragon eggplant, which had a gorgeous presentation (see my photo), and rich flavor, with a healthy kick to it. I don't normally go to Peter Chang chain any more but this one is within walking distance from me so I actually go here from time to time when too busy to cook. Their weekly special (on their website and could order online and pickup only) normally has better value compared to in-house price. They also have an AYCE tapas (small plates of main courses or dim sum) 11am-3pm Mon to Thurs, but the variety/selection was not as good as the Herdon/Gaithersburg/Bethesda store although a few bucks cheaper, and more importantly overseasoned/too salty the time I tried. We ordered the Chongqing Dry Spicy Red Pepper Chicken, the Grandma Brasied Pork Belly with Tea Eggs and the Cold Dish Platter. This place didn't disappoint and the food was fantastic. The peking duck was pretty good and gives my other options a run for their money but I do feel like maybe my usual place leaves the bones and extra meat so I feel like I'm getting more there for similar pricing. I would skip the walnut shrimp but the fried dumplings were intriguing. I wish there were more. The chow fun was pretty good. It's an easy spot to meet as a group given the space and there's even a small parking lot attached with some street parking. We got lucky and didn't have to wait long for a spot. The staff was very accommodating for a group reservation that also included a child. Overall, it was decent but maybe I had too high of expectations given the raving I often hear associated with the brand. It was my first time. I would be curious to try other dishes. read more

This is one of a few PC family restaurants in the area. I like to think of this Chinese food as fresher, higher quality, more vegetables and more creative than the typical Chinese restaurant. The food is very good and is highly recommended. Located in an old, yes old building but the inside is refreshed and clean and comfortable than the previous dingy looking Chinese restaurant previously located here I have only done take out but have returned again and again and maybe, yes....again and again . It's worthy. Pad Thai, kung pao, sesame beef and many other yummy dishes are recommended. I think the salt is a bit much but otherwise flavors are great. Parking is a bit of a challenge and be sure NOT to park in adjoining lot- you will get towed (read the signs!!). read more

Great news! You don't have to drive to Arlington to eat at Peter Chang's anymore! They have opened up a new location where House of Fortune used to be. We started with the spicy shrimp dumplings which were excellent. Very spicy. We also had the duck egg rolls which my husband enjoyed. They are known for their duck so I thought we should order these. My husband ordered creamy walnut chicken which he thought was okay, but will probably order something different next time. I order the Kung pao chicken as that is my favorite Chinese dish. It tasted more fresh and had more vegetables than what you would get at a chain restaurant. The chicken is dark meat. The service was excellent. The restaurant was very clean and nicely appointed. We also enjoyed the fact that my husband and I could hear each other talk. I am so glad that we have a locally owned Chinese restaurant in McLean! read more

This is a great Chinese restaurant that has authentic Chinese food. They have spicy and non/spicy dishes. Both taste equally impressive. I particularly like their spicy dishes because they are not too as greasy as other restaurants' spicy dishes. Service is friendly and great. The ambience is casual and warm. This is probably the 10th Peter Chang location I ever been to w the orig one I had frequented in Richmond about 100 times as it was our fav yrs ago. The dry fried eggplant and bamboo dish (both very similar seasonings) were Fanta and signature dish as well other locations. It's suppose to be spicy but dialed down for the general public so it's a tad bit spicier than Tobasco sauce which is fairly mild in my book. Service was great too. A super tray was that they had xlb, aka soup dumplings. Fantastic and ran a bit larger than normal. And served with black vinegar and slivers of ginger as they do at the Michelin star Ding Tai Fung--skin is fairly thin and seems to be handmade and tasted great! We also ordered the full duck (they have an option for a half duck if only a few dining) as there were 4 of us--very crispy and tasty. Clearly rendered for some time as it had that puff from the meat to skin. Pancakes were homemade as at Peking Gourmet Inn. Another fav. The scallop and shrimp w asparagus was yummy and mild to balance the other flavors. I took that from several other helpers and they were spot on. But then the other classic dishes all were fair to middling--the highly recommended wagyu with kung pao. Tiny morsels of wagyu swimming in an amateur sweet sauce w soggy overcooked veggies. Strange that a chef that made the other dishes allowed for this disaster. And to add insult to injury, it was nearly double the price of the other dishes. So all in all, I think sticking to the classic Szechuan dishes may be the way to go next time and also w the duck. Side note: Ambience was weirdly like Mama Changs in Fairfax, which is a different Chang enterprise. Overall serene and nice. Totally not crowded on the Sun brunch time we were here. read more

This was my first time visiting and it did not disappoint. There wasn't a dish I disliked. We opted for the Dim Sum option for lunch. Portions were generous and so flavorful! My family went here for my birthday dinner and here's how it went. The waiter was incredibly receptive and was very helpful with our food choices but the food came out at a breakneck speed so we didn't get a chance to eat everything in the right order. That being said mostly everything here was delicious. Panfried Noodles or their equivalent thereof was fantastic, a good mix of noodles and seafood. The mapo tofu was the perfect amount of spicy and paired well with the rice. The tingling sensation lasted long afterwards and was clearly made with the bean paste instead of food coloring because there were fun little fermented beans in the dish as well. The sweet and sour fried branzino was the stuff of gods. The knife work was incredible and the fish was fried perfectly. The bubble pancake was the first to dissapoint. The curry sauce was uninteresting and the pancake was more oil than scallions. The pork belly on olive greens was another interesting and slightly dissapointing item. The olive greens was a strong flavor and I wasn't particularly interested in it and the pork belly was cooked well but could have used some texture and color other than just "soft." The wagyu kung pao was fantastic but a bit small. It dissapeared instantly. All the dumplings were quite good but the duck ones in my opinion were the best. We were informed that the soup dumplings were not in fact soup dumplings and the menu was a mistranslation or just wrong. The duck was well made but I wish the skin was a bit crispier. All in all a good experience and if you know what to get I would highly reccomend coming back. The prices are absurd but some things I would pay that money for (ie the fish and the duck dumplings). read more
