Looking for a karaoke bar? Well look no further! Come here on Friday's and Saturday's and get on stage to sing or hang out and just sing along. Don't be shy! Everyone is really friendly and won't judge if you sing terribly (check) or messed up the lyrics even though they are right there in front of you (check). You should sign up for the song when you get there. Sometimes it can take an hour for you to get called on. I have to say I like going here for karaoke more than the Carriage House (although you'll get a lot more chances to get up and sing at Carriage House) or the asian karaoke studios (too intimate and no drinks!). Some of the singers are so good. You can tell they've been rehearsing for karaoke night. It's really entertaining to hear everyone sing The drinks are strong! They have a pool table. I have decided that Kearny Mesa has some of the best sleeper bars in San Diego. This older unrenovated bar has plenty of parking, plenty of room, and plenty of fun. Approaching the bar for the first time and observing the people outside I had a funny feeling that someone was going to get into a fight this night. It never happened. Instead, our group sat at the bar and prepared to enjoy the show that was about to begin. There is only one beer on tap, but it was fresh and cold, and everybody likes Stella, so the lack of selection is not really an issue. On this night it was karaoke night. Some great, some good, all completely entertaining. Imagine Girls Gone Wild, 15 years later. Imagine Ruben Studdard if he had grown up in San Diego and had been too antiestablishment to attend the auditions. Somehow I got sucked into a long discussion about staying out of prison and being a good citizen. The man assessed me as fine but was concerned about my friend who he immediately thought "was crazy, you can just tell" and thought was at great risk. Duly noted. As the evening progressed, there were 3 or 4 near-fights. For no good reason at all, of course. There were moments when I was glad to be sitting in close proximity to one friend (a bouncer), and my other friend, the prison-bound crazy guy. Love this place for karaoke. I'm only giving it 4 stars because 1. it really is just a bunch of really old people, mostly on drugs, until about 10 or 11 pm on the weekends and 2. Peter D's - Dive Bars Near Me - San Diego, California

I went here on the raving recommendation of a friend and was highly disappointed. However, I went on a Thursday night and my friend says Tuesday's are the best. But I checked the Yelp page for this place before leaving and it said Thursday's were one of the best nights. If Thursday's were the best nights... well... They apparently have this great bartender who gives you free shots if it's your first time there (according to my friend anyway), but he wasn't there when I went with another friend. The overall atmosphere was very depressing. My friend and I are 22 and 21, respectively, and we found ourselves surrounded by people in their late 30s (at the youngest). Not that there were very many people... there were probably about 9 people there, 11 including us two. Watching men in their 40s sing karaoke to a half-dazed, half-asleep crowd wasn't exactly our cup of tea. We ended up leaving after we finished our beers. With that said, at least the beer was good? I had a Stella Artois, but then again, you can't go wrong with that. read more

Peter D's is what it is, a dive bar in the truest sense of the word. If any bar nowadays that isn't a lounge is considered a "dive bar" to you, check out Peter D's for a clearer definition. If you don't like a true dive bar, then move and don't get your panties in a bunch over you and your friends who are 22 and 21 respectively having to be around older people. I've had some interesting conversations with some old guys at bars like this. Fact is, sometimes I like to get away from the hipster set and their fancy beers (ok, I love fancy beer) to drink some Bud in a bottle and Jack with some down to earth people. Hey, some people here are a little too down to earth, but that comes with the turf. I wouldn't come here if I didn't have some street sense, but at the same time the colorful people make Peter D's more interesting at times. I stay away on karoake nights and the jukebox has your perfect dive bar tunes. Plenty of tv's with sports on at all times. The key to this place for me is Rick, my second favorite bartender in town. Rick sets the tone of the place with alot of energy and is looking out for you, which can be an asset at a place like this. read more

I wasnt expecting to enjoy my time here but once again I was wrong. It was fun and lively and the one bartender with the bowling (fedora?) hat with the long hair was a pretty funny dude. This is obviously a locals bar because everyone seemed to know each other. You would never see it unless you were looking for it. Huge bar in the middle of the room and a stage behind it. I'm giving the D's 5 stars because I've been coming here for 13 years and still enjoy coming back. Yes...it's a dive. Yes...the layout is weird and yes...there are some crazies in there. But..the drinks are cheap...the bartenders are awesome and it's the best people watching experience ever. People from all walk of life gravitate towards this place because you can go in and be who you are. You will however, have to check any elitist and prissy behavior at the door. 5 stars for what it is. It's like stepping back in time (something that is extra apparent when you notice the rotary dial phone that they still use). This wasn't part of our original plan. We had a reservation at Yakitori Taisho, but we were early (and had 30 minutes to kill). It's a real dive bar. No hipsters here drinking beer with salt here. If you're high end and are shocked by the sight of real non-functioning alcoholics (and some people that look homeless) this isn't the place for you. While on vacation, we decided to check out one of the local dive bars and listen to (but not partake in) karaoke. The first thing I noticed was that there was plenty of parking in the strip mall location (always a good thing). The second was we were going to be immediately pegged as outsiders being that we were definitely the answer to "which thing does not belong" question. But instead of this turning into a B movie where we spend the rest of the night running for our lives, we were greeted by one of the friendliest bartenders south of West Hollywood. She made sure we had a pleasant stay, recommended some local restaurants, and even went so far as to try to talk us out of our premium vodka drink choices...what bartender tries to do that?! As for the karaoke, I was already aware that living in Los Angeles tends to dramatically skew the baseline for karaoke being that every other patron used to be in a band or is trying to get a recording contract. Went in on a Saturday for a Screwdriver, Don the bartender was a dud. I've been here before and had a good time, Don wasn't working. Totally gave me the cold shoulder. I tried to kill him with kindness, he was still sort of a dick. I was a lil bubbly when I came in & tried to engage in conversation, he wanted no part of me. Finally ventured into my closest dive bar. I had some brawn with me, just in case there were any fights. Peter D's has cheap and extremely strong drinks and a welcoming atmosphere. Mind you, I had been drinking pitchers of beer in PB for several hours before walking through Peter D's door. One of the guys in our group noted that the ladies he came in with (two of us) were the only ones under 200 lbs. For a group of us drinking and gabbing and singing along to Karaoke, it was just right! It wasn't intimidating, yet I'm still a little scared of the place. Must revisit on $2 night. read more

I love dive bars and Peter D's fits in that category. I also love stiff, cheap drinks, which Peter D's serves up in abundance. We usually come here for some drinks and pool before heading down the street to Buga for Korean BBQ. I've started to not drink Soju during dinner because we tend to show up absolutely hammered. They recently got a new jukebox and the songs are sort of expensive, but given all the other things Peter D's has going for it, it's a cross I'm willing to bear. I've lived across the street from Peter D's for over 7 years (my balcony is zip line trajectory to the bar) and I've been there many times, as have many of my friends. I did a karaoke song with 2 girlfriends tonight, and unfortunately the lyrics did not display along with the song. The fumble to make our way through without a screen was embarrassing enough... However, at the time of our leaving, the owner caught my attention to ask that I never sing karaoke again at his bar. I agree that the karaoke did not go as planned and certainly was awful, but that is poor business sense to alienate a patron and her friends after they have already experienced humiliation. Well, I may not have as long as a history at this bar than most of my friends/ex-friends who frequented it many years before. I do feel like I have gone through my fair share of epic life-changing drama at this bar, but despite this I also feel like every time I walk in the door, and Matt raises his metal horns and yells "MIIIIKE", I am at home. I spent most of my formative drinking years here after I turned 21. Went through a lot at this place. However, I think the best and most amazing part is, I have probably spent more money in aggregate at other bars that I have not frequented... than I have spent here. And I have probably gotten more alcohol here over a smaller amount of drinks. How is this possible?!? Cheap, super stuff drinks. I mean, a rum and coke doesnt really have coke in it. Maybe a tiny splash for color... and thats the way it should be! I have walked (ok fine... stumbled) away from this place more often than not because the amount and percentage of alcohol to mixer in the cocktails here is downright dangerous. And I love it. Karaoke! They have a stage. Yes, a stage... with tinsel and a disco ball, and multiple monitors... You stand up in front of everyone at the bar and belt your heart out. And no one makes fun of you if you suck, because they know they suck too. Everyone just claps and claps no matter what. I have seen some of the worst singers at this place and they have the most spirit I have ever seen in Karaoke... Its super respectable. From the omnipresent Patriots fan who always sings "God Bless the USA" to the always enjoyable (yet not so much after the 3rd repetition) renditions of Bob Dylan (complete with actual harmonica!) I don't think i will ever be able to not come to Peter D's. So many memories, good and bad, but mostly good. And the bad just makes for awesome stories later! read more

The first time I visited Peter D's was after a christmas party that had ended far too early for my likes! A beer was in order and some fun was to be had! So a friend invited us over for a beer to a bar close to his home.... Bars this north of the 8 are just not my bag... but i figured what the heck... let's see what "Peter D's" is all about! Fortunately... it was not as bad as i thought.... Sure... the place was a total dive in a corner shopping plaza.... sure the bathroom had been thrown up in about oh at least four times... but you know what?!? That place had character! Doesn't get much better...and they'll let you bring in food (La Playita house tostada is a good way to go) or you can dive into their Sunday "buffet" (although I won't vouch for the level of salmonella in their hot dogs). This place is creepy and depresssing. Soooo small. Total meat market if you are a single girl (as in you are small delicious prey and some of the men are hungry...) The stage is kind of awesome though- it's 1-2 people big and has the foil curtain effect often seen in the 70's in the background. read more

I've been a few times with friends and is basically used to pre-game when there's nothing at the house, even though there's a liquor store 50ft away. Usually love this place. Good music, good drinks, great staff ..except the new bouncer. I hadn't drank anything and was turned away without a reason. He said my friend, who was already in there that I was stumbling. I had walked from my house down the alley. I was wearing pjs bottoms and if that breaks dress code, that's one thing..but I have been there over 50 times in pj bottoms and swimsuits without a problem. So my first visit here was pretty strange to say the least. First some drunk girl (looked 24 at the oldest, actually 32!! ) was taking pictures of my friend on her camera phone like a stalker. Second we got into a verbal fight, close to fist fight, with an ex Vietnam guy who threaten to fight us democrats. Drinks are cheap somewhat of a dive bar. They have karaokes on some nights. The crowd is usually the older crowd. But much fun can be had here. I here there is a bartender that works on everyday but tuesday and wednesday that is hilarious. I have heard stories of someone shaking up a beer and opening it to his face and him just trying to drink it all and loving it. That is what I call service. read more

The last time I went here, they had a machine in the bathroom that sold "adult novelties" for 50 cents. That, and the crazy bartender are the best things about this place. Nestled in a strip mall in the heart of San Diego's Clairemont community this local institution has been chugging along for decades. It is quintessentially Clairemont, a community of blue collar workers, military retirees, ex-cons and various ne'er do wells that has resisted gentrification and remained true to its roots. Although it's tiny 1950s era tract houses now cost half a million (and that doesn't include the decontamination fees to remove the prior owners meth lab) many locals have held on and continue to make Peter D's their watering hole of choice. Its decor is authentic 1960s (authentic cause that's how long it has been there)with dark paneling and incredibly gaudy carpeting. It is reasonably clean even if some of the day time clientele is a bit hygiene impaired. A wide screen projection TV and multiple other smaller units keep the sports running except on Karaoke nights. Pool tables are available along with a few video games. Opening at 6 AM (more or less), by day it is a geezer bar populated with a mixture of elderly, unemployed and generally disconsolate folks from the hood. They are harmless, laugh a lot, and strangers are welcome. Things pick up a bit in the afternoon as the local tweakers and ex cons wake up and wander over. Weekends draws a more upscale (I'm talking relative here) grouping for football or whatever sport is on the wide screen. Things brighten up most evenings when this most unlikely of venues turns into a popular karaoke stage with people coming from all over the area to sing. Some times it's magic and sometimes it's tragic but everyone seems to have a lot of fun. Despite this somewhat bleak description, it actually is a friendly non threatening place for folks who are reasonably familiar with the rules of etiquette for drinking in a dive (don't stare). I have wasted many a pleasant afternoon and evening at Peter D's The prices are cheap and the pour relatively generous since the original owner was forcibly retired for shooting somebody out in the parking lot a couple of years back. (it was just a flesh wound) There is plenty of parking but be aware the local gendarmes stake out the parking lot to take advantage of the all to easy DUI pickings so designate a driver or call a cab. Bartenders are very friendly and quick in getting drinks out to you. However, people get pretty rowdy and the staff doesn't do much to calm the situation down before it gets too hectic. Karaoke is also a blast and well organized. read more
