Balboa's Tap House is a great neighborhood and grill located next to Sprouts in Clairemont. It has a relaxed, welcoming vibe and is a solid spot whether you're stopping in for a drink or watching sports game. They have a strong craft beer selections that I liked with around 32 beers on tap, plus a full bar, you'll definitely find something you will like here. There selections are massive. The focus is definitely on good beer and a casual, easygoing atmosphere rather than anything overly loud or crowded. They even have decent wine selections and plenty to choose from. This is a sports friendly bar with TVs showing UFC fights to World Cup soccer. It does get pretty busy during happy hour but it's totally worth the it. Service is still fast and efficient even when it's packed. The staff is friendly and customer service has always been consistent every single time I am here adding to the chill, neighborhood feel. This place is newly remodeled and it looks wonderful. They serve 24 ounce cans of Happy Dad grape and fruit punch. It's what brought me in here. They have a wonderful selection of everything you can order from next-door and eat at the bar and watch UFC fights or any sports that's on. Listen, the place is really nice for some drinks and for watch parties with friends, but the service is absolutely terrible . Tried going with family on a busy night and there was a table we couldn't get unless we bought pitchers which was completely fine so we asked how much we needed to buy with who I'm assuming is the manager ( someone with curly hair) . He said that is "that is not your business, if you're gonna have just water, you can't be here ". We asked with the intention of buying, but yet he was completely disrespectful throughout the whole interaction. The rest of the workers are the same as well. Not impressed with this beer bar. Lots of taps, lots of screens. Selection looks good but the beer I had was one of the worst beers I've ever tasted (and I brew my own so I've had a lot of bad beers). I think they don't clean their taps like they should, the beer had zero head, was flat, and tasted a bit sour/soapy. Had a weird kind of minerally /cotton mouth kind of aftertaste. There were no heaters outside, employees smoking right next to the patio and the chair was super hard. Person at the bar was spilling beer on customers hands and fumbling for the bottle opener... on the plus side they seemed to have a cash price, but it seemed to be just what was on the screen...not really a discount. read more

They are under remodel but drink (beer liquor seltzer etc) all super discount. I want to say they have all the games but call for UFC and boxing. Patio is amazing for dogs and daytime. Great drink specials but customer service needs some work. Not once was I approached for another drink when clearly my glass was empty and saw employees look past my table. One star deduction because the air conditioning is nonexistent, we went on the hottest weekend of the year, 09/07/2024. BUT, 4 stars because the food was great and so was the service, thanks Ryan!! Even though there was a few college football games, Ryan was awesome for finding the USC vs. Utah State game on the Big10 network. We kept the volume on the Padres game until that game was over, understandably so, then we piped in the USC color telecast. The Trojans defeated Utah State, 48-0. The place has a good view of all TV's and has a good array of food and spirits. There is a lot of beer on tap and canned alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks. A good place to try if you are around the neighborhood. My daughter lives locally so this was our go to spot for the night. We really liked the chicken tenders 5 pc (tossed with garlic and chili), and the Beef Shawarma bowl with half yellow rice and half Iraqi salad. Balboa's Tap House for the win! read more

Stay away! They do not have rotating taps nor do they have food. The "bartender" didn't have the ingredients for a requested cocktail, so made something utterly disgusting instead. The beer is on point! Tons of craft brews to choose from. The location seems a bit interesting but when you get inside, it's super welcoming and very cozy. I quite enjoyed the ambiance! This place was actually a surprise. I went thinking it was going to be a dive bar with cringy music but it was the complete opposite. It sort of gave me BWW vibes but more pubby. We went around 915p-930p and it wasn't packed at all even for our large crowd. Your order at the register and the first time I ordered with a gentleman, easy and quick. The second time, went back up and there was a woman there packing orders who didn't acknowledge me for at least 3-5 mins - not a "be right you" nothing ; yes I could see what she was doing but there was still a lack of customer service. She made up for it when she brought us our meals and was very quick with all the extra stuff we asked for (salt, pepper, etc). OH!!! The biggest surprise was that they actually served a Greek / Mediterranean cuisine and not the typical bar food. I was impressed and it was actually pretty good! I stumbled upon Balboa's Tap House looking for a happy hour spot to meet up with a friend in the area. They have great weekly happy hour deals. We happened to be there on a Tuesday for their version of Taco Tuesday! I got a delicious $5 gyro taco that came with rice. I was so impressed with the portion size for just $5. It was huge and I was fully after eating it along with my fresh poured pint. read more

I like neighborhood bars a lot and i frequent the sprouts in that strip mall; decide to give it a try and was so disappointment with the food. The burger was very mediocre but had this interesting not very appetizing smell to it- come from a culture where we dont waste food so didnt send it back or complain- just gulped it all down knowing i am not returning Fries were soooo bad and soggy. Look at the 2 pic with all that oil. Ended up not eating all my fries since i was done by then Beer- cali creamin- it wasnt cold and it seemed watered down- never have I experienced that. Did they get a bad batch from mother earth? I dont know Anyway- not returning. $29 worth of food and beer and leaving with disappointment read more

I have probably come to this spot once a year the past few years and each time there's some new upgrades! They have a pretty wide and decent selection of beers and wine, good American and middle eastern fusion bar food, a lot of TVs broadcasting different sports, and now their latest upgrade is a full bar!! With all that said, I can see my friends and I making this a regular spot to watch basketball games. The staff has always been friendly and I can see how well they interact with the regulars. I love the sports bar environment, variety of food and drinks, and proximity to my house so I look forward to coming more often! read more

I ended up trying something a little different and went for the chicken tikka bowl. AMAZING. I usually don't write reviews it I felt like this was well deserved. Beef Shawarma Fries... Hot hand cut fries topped generously with delicious seasoned shawarma, tahini, garlic sauce, tomatoes, red onion, feta cheese, parsley and some hot peppers omg my mouth is watering. Seriously, this is it, the legit stuff, made by those who know, all for your mouth and face. Balboa's has always had amazing staff, huuuuuuge beer/wine/liquor selections, but their food has been.... mediocre at best. Now that they are cooking shawarma (chicken too!) that you can have on fries or chips?!?! OMG you really need to try them. The place has also improved over the years, it feels more of a nice atmosphere almost classy but with enough TVs and sports to make any fan feel at home instantly. Did I mention the shawarma fries? Love the family that runs this place, their beer is legit as well which you can also purchase. They are very kind and hospitable even to the occasional rowdy sports fans (Eagles/Boston fans you know who you are). 10/10, will repeat multiple times just for dat Shawarma!!! read more
