They carry unique items from Mandarin Duck, Tusk, Orla Kiely and other foreign designers... if you're a colorful or unique person and the items you use reflect that, Peter Herman is a must stop if you're in the area. Warning: They are not cheap by any means but everything I've purchased has been of great quality. A wallet I bought 3 years ago is still in great condition as is my cutest cosmetic case. My shopping experience in NYC had been quite unimpressive until I entered Peter Hermann. Unimpressive not for the lack of options- but rather the vastly indifferent or downright rude retailers & employees encountered all over the city (yes all over, on Madison, Fifth, Canal, TriBeCa...everywhere)- I had actually dismissed it as "just the way this city is." The colorfully merchandised window is what pulled me inside, but the FANTASTIC customer service is what brought me back before closing time. I was warmly welcomed both times, and the owner was so patient with my increasing indecisiveness as I continued to find new items of interest in every nook of the store (he's got quite the variety of items). The owner knows his designers very well (going as far as explaining why something cost more than a similar item)- he's not just selling "expensive stuff" that "must be of good quality" due to the price. I was also very happy with the genuine connection he made with my consumer alter-ego, giving me just enough information to select my purchase without feeling forced to buy what he thought was right for me. This little boutique is a haven for leather goods I have ventured in when I find myself in SoHo to peruse their well-selected stock of high-end brands of wallets, handbags and leather goods. The shop keepers can offer a helping hand when selecting styles and colors, as well as give advice regarding leather care. On a recent trip, I purchased a small alligator card case as a gift. I wanted to side-step the ubiquitous Jack Spade, especially since it doesn't fit my more sleek/bold style. This tiny store had fantastic service and selection. The owners were really helpful and put extra special care into the purchase, including helping me see if a Macbook Pro would fit in the briefcases I was looking at. My boyfriend and I were in NYC in March this year when the weather decided to go from cold, to rainy, to full on snow (typical...). Considering this is the end of the winter season in the fashion world, nice leather gloves are apparently hard to find in the city at this time. Peter Hermann had great reviews here on Yelp so we ventured out, hoping this would be the Holy Grail of leather gloves. Upon ducking into the shop, we were promptly greeted by Michael and he asked if he could be of any help. We asked if he specifically had any brown leather gloves, to which he grimaced, saying this time of year all the gloves are put away. I suppose my bf and I were visibly frustrated by this because Michael paused for a beat, then said he could check the basement and see if he could find the bin of leather gloves. What a gent! He ducked out into the cold wind and rain for us to retrieve said box, amongst which my boyfriend found THE perfect fitting chocolate brown leather gloves with beautiful dark orange detail stitching. To some this may seem like just a pleasant experience or a shopkeeper doing his job to bring money in to the store, but Michael was not only kind enough to pull out "last season's" merchandise and sort through the entire box with us, but after we left, he noticed us standing outside in the cold attempting to pull up directions to a pizza place. He ushered us back inside, found the place for us on his laptop, and even called the place to confirm they were still there (my bf hadn't been in years since he last lived in the city, so we were unsure if it even existed still). I'll always remember Michael's above-and-beyond assistance in not just helping us find the right gloves, but also in being a genuinely kind person to an out-of-town couple. Bottom line: this is the kind of the shop that makes you remember it months later, as well as loyally revisit it. We'll be back! read more

One of my favorite stops on my downtown jaunts is Peter Hermann. It's the perfect place to find a gift for anyone. Amazing selection of scarves, gloves, wallets, sunglasses & bags. I bought my Ro messenger bag there (designed by architects) with LED light inside when you need to find something in low light. The people who work there are helpful and will order something for you if they don't have it in stock. I rarely walk out empty-handed. They were even able to replace the wheel on my Mandarina Duck trolley (though I bought it in Paris). read more

A tiny hole in the wall on Thompson Street, just below Prince Street, in New York's Soho, that packs a multitude of treasures into a small space: great retro sunglasses, wallets, skull-profile cuff links, bags, purses, and my personal favorite, the Scuola del Cuoio-leather card case, which is beautifully made without a single stitch visible. Somewhat pricey, but worth it! I can't remember the name of the young man who waited on me, but his demeanor was perfect: professional, friendly, and quick to show me the multitude of things I asked about: easy, no pressure; almost like asking the opinion of the friend shopping with you, rather than the guy running the store. two words: mandarina duck. they're really awesome bags. that's about the only reason why i went to this place. it still boggles my mind why MD does not have its own store in the US (they're all over france and italy), but among the authorized sellers in nyc, i think peter hermann has the most extensive MD collection, albeit on the somewhat pricey side, especially when i do the euro-dollar calculations in my head. and yes, that's the mandarina duck logo in my profile. i wonder if i'll get into some sort of legal trouble for using it without their permission? i did change the color to blue, so... *shrug* read more

Great store. They have some of the cutest, quirkiest, fun bags and goods around. Unfortunately they're not a bargain... but then again, I don't know what is anymore. They have great selection, and the staff are quite helpful. One downside... they have pretty bad hours. They don't open until 12:00, which to me seems pretty late. The store is also really, really tiny, and it seems to attract bag-hounds, so just know that if there are more than four people in the store you'll want to get out as soon as possible. One of the few long time, locally owned, luxury leather goods stores in Soho. Limited selection but everything is top drawer quality and not easily found elsewhere. Prices are reasonable given the quality and the service is exceptionally good. This is the kind of store New York used to have by the dozens. I love Soho and Tribeca, even now, but it's important that places like Peter Hermann and its sister shop, Il Bisonte (120 Sullivan Street, around the corner) stay in business. Il Bisonte's selection is somewhat larger than Peter Hermann's, and the quality slightly higher, but the prices there are reasonable, as well, and the service is equally great. I walked 20 blocks to visit Peter Hermann to buy a special gift, and I was not disappointed (neither was the gift recipient). read more

I wandered in since this shop is near where I work and I was absolutely impressed with the customer service and selection. The gentleman I spoke with was extremely knowledgeable about all of the designs and offered very helpful comments without being salesy or pushy in any way. it was a thoroughly refreshing soho experience. it's a tiny shop but there is a plentiful, thoughtful and unique inventory. It's a small store that has been in business for 24 years but you can definitely find a cool bag, wallet or purse for yourself here. I specifically came to this store for a Mandarina Duck carry-on bag, and my eyes kept wandering around the place looking at other goodies. Apparently, Peter Hermann is currently the only store in the U.S. that has been approved by Mandarina Duck to carry their line. I can tell from the collection of variety of bags that these guys know what to carry from style, fit, and brands. I'll definitely come back to visit when I'm in town again. read more
