I almost gave it a 5 just because of the old green leather upholstered booths. As far as neighborhood bars go, it's hard to think of a better place to to escape the neighboring chaos in Chelsea. Don't sleep on the McManus Ale, the Rueben and if your feeling cozy, warm up to their Chicken & Rice soup. Good people drinking and serving. Came here for a few drinks after dinner on our way back to our hotel. It was packed but we fit on at the bar. It was your typical NYC Irish bar. We had a good time. The tap beers are a mix of the standard and some microbrews. We stuck to beer bur the liquor selection seemed huge. It is a nice place to stop in. The service was quick and friendly. So excited to go for our friends birthday. Had a good 5 minutes there until I asked for tonic water. When he dropped the glasses at me and told me it was $6 with a $15 card minimum, I'll admit I looked shocked but I did head over to the ATM. I went to my friend who was handing me the cash and she looks over to see the bartender pouring out our drinks. I said okay moving on. About 2 minutes later, when she tried to order us waters, he ignored us, which we expected, but when he finally gave us his time he flat out said he won't serve me water and in turn her. When we asked why he turned away and then upon further approach he said it was because I gave him attitude. After deciding to leave and realizing he was just rude and awful he tries to rally our friends. The whole time I'm reassuring my friend it's not a big deal and we're just going to put ourselves out of the equation. As I'm walking out the door he tells me I'm awesome. This place is hilariously bad, and I love it for that. The service is terrible, the food is fried garbage, the tables are falling apart, and the bathroom stalls have no latches. My friends and I go there all the time for cheap pitchers ($15) and casual conversation. McManus brings out the locals, the blue-collar and the frat guys, and I wouldn't recommend arriving later than 11, when it will be impossible to find standing room, let alone a free table. Not sure about the "cafe" part but this is a great, classic old school nyc bar. Great place to end a night out as everyone comes here in various states of drunkenness, it's that kinda place. This is not some new glam-Irish pub you see around midtown. This is just a simple, classic, dingy Irish pub that you'd see in a movie about a down-on-his-luck guy who owns a dingy, classic Irish pub and gets sucked into the wrong crowd--that pub. there is a reason the health dept has closed this bar more than once. Great for drinks, but the food is suspect to me. If you live anywhere near the bar, good luck sleeping. The loudest drunk people in Manhattan, yelling while outside smoking at all hours of the night. I even see this people in this place at 5am when I go to the gym. read more

Pleasant Surprise: I came across McManus as I was visiting someone in Chelsea and went for a bite after I left around 11:30 pm. I went to a place that was closing and they recommended Cafeteria and McManus. I've been to Cafeteria and it's overrated, so I decided to try McManus and its Pub food. I walked in and as expected, it was divy, which I don't really mind cause I've had some great food in dive bars. I sat down at a tablecloth that obviously was the same one the previous customer used but again, I didn't mind. The waitress was very prompt and gave me a rundown of the beers, which were a good selection, and I ordered a Brooklyn IPA. Mind you it was pretty busy, and my beer came out pretty quick. The menu wasn't extensive and they usual pub fare and club sandwiches and salads but the Lamb Chops caught my eye. I love lamb chops and have been eating them since I was a kid. It comes with a salad, vegetable and mashed or fries and it was $15.95. This made me think this place wasn't that good. That's cheap, not only for NY but for anywhere. I asked the waitress if she recommended it and she said definitely. So I got it. Salad was decent, the Italian dressing was good, and then the food came out and I didn't wait long. Like I said, I've been eating lamb chops forever, and they're usually small, and about half an inch thick,cooked, at the most. These came out, big and thick, an inch cooked, and fatty. Fatty is always a good thing. It means flavor. You don't have to eat it, you can trim it, but the fat and the bone adds the most flavor. Gotta tell ya, they were delicious, but it made me think it was probably a full grown sheep or goat, which is not a bad thing. I dunno how he got such tasty meat he's selling at that price, but I loved it. The veggies needed salt, but that's not a problem. I got the fries with cheese and they had muenster so I went with that. Pretty good. The portion size was perfect, I just got full as I finished it. Overall, great experience. I wish I lived close so I could frequent when I wanted but if you're in the area, definitely definitely give the Lamb Chops a try. read more

Having read a few reviews that made this place seem like a good, neighborhood place to just grab a beer and pub food I decided to suggest that my friends and I go before a play at the Irish Rep. We walked in, and the place outright stank! The NYC rating card listed the place as "Rating Pending" which always makes me wonder. We sat down at a table in the bar area where no one acknowledged our existence. There was a table near us with a couple who were looking over a menu, but there was no wait staff in sight, nor were there any menus around. The bartender saw us, so if there was not wait staff service there, I would have hoped he would have mentioned it. No. Nothing. I've visited my share of dive bars and pubs with just plain pub fare, but this was the worst. The table had not even been cleaned. There was junk and an empty straw wrapper. This place needs a bar rescue. It is a family-owned institution in a nice neighborhood that has to be losing money. read more

I overheard the owner or manager, whatever he was call my friend "a dickwad". The person he said this about was probably one of the nicest guys i ever knew.. And this piece of garbage owner said that about him unbeknownst that he was my friend. We just happened to be at separate parts of the bar. So i said to the owner, "did you just call him (and pointed to my friend) a dickwad" and the owner said yeah. I said, he is the nicest guy i ever met. Then he goes again, "hes a dickwad". And my friend did zero to be called that. So anyway, i go over my friends in the back at the table, and said lets get out of here.. Were done. I ain't spending another dime in here. We all got up and left. That piece of trash lost 2 thousand dollars that night. By the end of the night we had about 25 people and we didn't stop partying till 2! The money he could have made....lol. If you have any morals or dignity, you will not walk into that disgusting fish tank of a bar. read more

So I've been here twice to date. First time I ordered a burger -medium it came to be well done, not one bit of red. I addressed it and they asked if I wanted it remade, I said no of course. I don't send food back - ever. Today I happened to be in the city as wanted to give this place another chance. . So I ordered, got my burger, of course it was well done, no red at all and I spoke to the server about this - I got a rude short answer and he stated " well what do you except, your in a bar" last time I checked they served food and what does the place being a bar have anything to do with it?? The server went on and on and on, I explained to him that it wasn't how I ordered it and maybe he should address it with the cooks since its the 2nd time this has happened. He just kept his head up in the air and acted like I was over reacting etc. I pointed out that when I'm paying fr sumthing, I want it the way I want it. It's my money and there's a million places in the city to eat, needless to say, even when I was eating, he still wanted to debate with me. I don't think asking a place to make a burger the way I want it, is to much to ask for and med isn't well done!!! I am very Disaapointed and have no plans to return back to this place. I will be placing a call tithe owner as the server had no right to give me a rude, crazy response when I asked about why it wasn't cooked the way I ordered it. read more

This is one of the better blue collar bars in NYC. Service is spotty (great to terrible, depending on the staff that day). Food is terrible. The drinks are great. Just don't eat there. They seem to have given up on the kitchen. EXCELLENT HANGOUT FOR REGULARS, SO SO FOR CASUAL CUSTOMERS. This reviewer has been a regular since 1976. There is a certain arrogance there especially in the evening. The evening staff just does not care about the customers. And they seem proud of it. Great atmosphere, good drinks, terrible food and attitude. Needs a wakeup call. The maudlin drunk referred to in Rachel's review is one of my friends. Just to clear thing up, I am not a drunk, but a regular who finds the place comfortable and nearby. I just wish the food were not so awful. it was much better years ago.
