One up Salon is the best value salon in the area. My husband has been going to Wayne for his haircuts for the past year since we moved to Cole Valley and he has had flawless haircuts every time! Wayne is usually available in the afternoon if you call ahead. He makes sure to listen to what you want and then executes perfectly. I recently came with my husband hoping for a quick woman's trim and I was thrilled after my haircut with Ha! I was so happy with her attention to detail and came away with exactly what I wanted. Ha did a dry cut without a wash & dry per my request with a V shape and layers ($30 before tip!). She made sure to communicate with me along the way and paid a lot of attention to the details. I told the guy I was growing my hair out and just wanted to fix the overly long length in the back. He described my style as a shag or a wolf. And I said I didn't want that and even showed him a picture. In the end he took multiple inches off the top and kept the length in the bottom back, keeping it as a "shag" or "wolf".. it looks terrible and I lost months of growing out the length on top. If you are a woman with medium to long length hair or are looking for layers please do not come here. I just had a haircut for the first time since June 2020 and unfortunately it was the worst haircut I have ever received in my life. Ideally I would have liked to tell the owner there and then about the situation but I didn't know if there was any one else in charge (and maybe my stylist - she was the lady stylist - is the owner?). But after the terrible non haircut I was charged $70 and demanded that I tip. Other salons would have refunded the price of the haircut and/or offered to fix it. Came in for my first haircut since the beginning of quarantine; the hair had gotten long and relatively shapeless, and Michael did a great job of putting life back into my hair. He checked in with me multiple times about what length and cut style I wanted. He also actually paid attention to the reference photos I showed him, asking to see the photos more than once in the middle of the cut -- really appreciate when hairstylists listen to you! Even at times when I wasn't sure how short I wanted my layers and wanted to rely on his expertise, he still was open to my feedback and wanted to get it just right. Also appreciated that when the cut was done and I was happy, he still offered to make small adjustments at no cost if in a week I wanted it shorter, thinner, etc. He also worked around the little wispy bangs I cut myself in the middle of quarantine and didn't judge me for doing spontaneous quarantine things... & of course, can't beat the price, especially around the Haight & NoPa area. They didn't shampoo or blow-dry my hair, but that is completely expected because I paid $28 (not including tip). Other salons I looked up in this neighborhood charge in the triple digits, and while I'm sure they offer great services, that's just not doable on a student budget. This was my first covid haircut and I really enjoyed my experience. Before I sat down they sanitized the area for me and the door was open for air flow. There was only one other customer in the shop which I liked. I was able to call and walk in 15 minutes later, the person cut my hair really well, I'll definitely be going back. She took her time shampooing my hair and also gave me a generous scalp massage.
