Eric K. is amazing with his precision in cutting, knowledge of styling and attention to details. This was a referral from a friend. He asked me how I wanted to style my haircut. He listened and made a few suggestions based on the shape of my face and the direction along which my hair was growing. (I guess not all hair grows downward or in the same direction.) He was meticulous, precise, confident in shaping my hair with his scissors and comb. The outcome was fabulous, like I just walked out of a fashion runway. It's now a month later and the haircut still looks great. If you want a "glam" haircut, go to Eric. (You may thank me later.) The establishment is modern, clean, and surprisingly quiet even though each station was full. Before the cut, there was another person shampooing my hair. She was rather gentle and probably still in training about pressure points and the amount of pressure to apply for a good head massage. Most Asian hair salons provide this benefit as part of hair washing to augment the service experience. I have been coming here for haircuts since I was in college. Time flies and it's been more than 15 years. Staffs are super friendly. I did see comments talking about the price being expensive, $55 + tips for a haircut in fact is very reasonable price in San Francisco. I had my haircut in San Lorenzo one time, and I was charged $75 + tips. Rent is expensive and so does the labor. Anyways, not trying to argue here but people do have to realize that things in San Francisco Bay Area have been very expensive. I've been a long-time customer of Eric's. He pays attention to detail, and I am always pleased with his work. I moved to the East Bay a few years ago and had tried other hairdressers, but none of them could deliver the haircut I was looking for. I had to return here. From the other reviews on here, it seems that most folks with longer hair are happy with Eric's work. But if you're a male or female looking for a short hair cut, beware of Eric... I debated for a while on whether I should actually go out of my way to write this negative review but what Eric did to my hair is honestly not OK. I've had my share of bad cuts but this one is comically bad. The difference between what I'd asked for and what I got is outrageous. Eric is unbelievably careless. I am embarrassed with the hair cut I walked out with and already dread going into the office tomorrow. My girlfriend also can't help but laugh at my haircut saying it makes me look "crude and unsophisticated". I wish I was kidding. And I wish she was wrong. There are way better places to spend $55 + tip for a haircut. If you want details: I began the appointment by telling Eric that I wanted a: 1.) Fade down to skin on the sides 2.) "Very light trim" on the top He then asked me how I wore my hair - up or down, styled or natural - to which I responded "down and natural". He brushed my hair down naturally to supposedly confirm his understanding. I closed my eyes to relax as he began and when I opened my eyes about 30 mins later, my heart instantly sank. My "very light trim" had become a faux hawk looking monstrosity that included a: 1.) Harsh single length buzz on the sides (not down to skin) 2.) About 80% length reduction of the remaining hair on the top of my crown, including an aggressive thinning job. There wasn't even enough hair left to ask him to try to fix it.. 3.) Jagged neckline To finish it off, he styled my hair up. Maybe he was having a bad day or something but this kind of output is incredibly unprofessional. He didn't even try. I've found this place walking by about 5 or 6 years ago. Johnny has been cutting my hair ever since. I'm not a girl that wants a wash and blow dry I prefer a dry cut in and out and that's what I get with Johnny. He knows my hair well and I've never been disappointed with a haircut he's provided. So here's the deal with my hair: it is dry, damaged, very thin, brittle. I've literally found split ends with more than a dozen splits. I'm not kidding. Some of my hairs look like insect legs (I'm cringing writing this, and although it sounds like I'm exaggerating, I'm not and it really IS that bad). On top of that, it's flat, there's lots of baby hairs that are popping up all over the place. It's a complete mess. And then I found Johnny. He is a hair genius. He spent a few minutes looking over my hair and knew exactly what I needed and what I'd want. He explained he'd cut it so that it would get rid of all the split ends - but that he'd leave it as long as possible since he could tell I like my long hair. He actually cut my hair dry so that he could see the split ends (and get rid of them all, AMEN.) I have a pretty long face and explained that I should never part it in the middle, and cut my bangs in a way that allowed me to part it on both sides. Instead of thinning it (like every other place I've been), he somehow layered my hair to give it body, something that no other stylist has ever achieved. Johnny just understood my hair in a way that no one else ever has. He also recommended a keratin treatment for my hair, which made it incredibly soft, supple and healthy. It's been a few weeks since my haircut and I still see no split ends! Miracle worker. Best of all, the hair cut was only $40, and the keratin treatment something like $140 or $160 (can't remember the exact figure). Both were incredibly worth it and probably the best deal you can find in the city. Pro tip: It's cash only! Make sure to have enough on you. There's a few ATMs nearby otherwise. read more

Eric Scissorhands, he's my man. Only person I will let cut my hair. I've been coming here at least for the past 3 years. I've never had a single bad haircut from him. It's because he knows what he's doing. Upon my first consultation, he picks up two strands of hair from both sides of my head, holds it up and checks to see if they are equal in length. And of course, mine were uneven and he informed me the person that's been cutting my hair for the last 6 years did not know how to cut hair. And yes, it was true, there were a handful of times at my old hair stylist's salon when I tried super hard to hold back the tears from the horror I saw staring back at me in the mirror when she was done with my cut/style. There may have been one time when I shamefully let the Nile River pour out my eyes because I looked so scary and there was no way I was going to be seen in public looking like that. But those days are over, no more stinging eyes, no more anxiety from wondering if you'll walk out with a mullet. Because Eric will never let you down. read more

Cheap Asian salon - $35 for a haircut from Eric. Good attention to detail. Didn't keep me waiting, and they were friendly enough, even offered me a drink. I asked for long layers, and got layers shorter than my shoulder. Umm.. ok, it looked fine after it was styled but after I washed my hair, it sticks outwards in all directions. Lesson learned: if you have semi wavy (e.g. not totally stick straight hair), DO NOT get short layers, and make sure Eric knows what you mean by that. I'd probably come back because Eric seemed to have a good attention to detail MINUS the fact that he completely ignored that I requested long layers. After searching endlessly and getting constantly disappointed by hair dressers not understanding what it means when i say "dont cut my bangs too short". Not only did Johnny not need me to tell him, he himself said it before I can mutter a word saying how having bangs helps shape my face better and that i just need textures and to layer the sides. I have been going to Johnny for years for my haircut. Then I recruited my mom, so we go together. No we don't get the same hair style, my mom likes her really shirt, I move between shoulder length and a bob or sometimes shorter. He does both very well. They've relocated just down the street to 419 Clement. The new place is updated and clean. his practices are COVID safe, enough distance between customers, keeping of masks on even when you're getting a hair cut. And, his haircuts are stylish and suited to the individual face and hair type. I don't tend to be the kind that brings in pictures, I have a general idea sometimes, like I want it off my neck, at an angle, etc... but he's typically good and picking out a style that works for my face and hair type. If I can give 0 star, I would do it. NEVER NEVER NEVER GO. I came here last sat asking for coloring my hair only as I just cut my hair two weeks ago. But Johnny said my hair was not cut well, so he insisted on cutting it again. I let him do it coz I want him to be happy so that he can make my hair looks good. I asked for brown-red color, but it turned out to be black. It's not the natural black, instead it's so black that looks so fake. I wish I can put the pictures here that shows how big different the two colors are. But I look so bad that I don't want anyone to see me. To be honest, I dyed my hair over 20 times over my life and never see a hair stylist messed up with coloring. Coloring doesn't even require expertise. A lot my friends even do it themselves. At first Johnny tried to deny his mistake, later he realized it's so different that he can't deny. So he waiver my coloring fee but still charge for cutting fee. Come on! I never even ask u to cut my hair. After I washed my hair, the water is so red, which never happened in my life. The water should be clear. I don't know what chemical he uses. The reason why I am so mad is I asked my hairstylist in Japantown, she told me I basically can't dye my hair within 6 months. I need to wait until black color fade and then I can dye it lighter, which means I have to wear this fake dark black hair so 6 months. And johnny, as a hair stylist doesn't even know the common sense that no other color can cover black color if it's so black. He still asked me to come back again and claiming he will fix it.
