Not quite Portillo's but just as good ;) I'm a fan of the gyro salad and the pizza puffs. Yes the pizza puffs takes me back to when I was in high school but I still enjoy them. They offer a variety of meal combos from hot dogs, to beefs, to pizza puffs :) I haven't quite ventured the rest of the menu yet but since I enjoy the food already, I won't be disappointed. Oh, Pete's. How I love you. Nothing to look at from the outside (or inside for that matter), but Pete's is solid fast food. I highly recommend the gyros - I haven't had better in Chicago. I literally grew up on Pete's as my grammar school was a block away. I have always found the service to be friendly and fast, a great combo! Hands down, their Gyro's are the best I have had any where. They make homemade sauce and I did not realize this until after experimenting with other Gyro places. It is delicious and the fries are tasty too. I also like their Greek salad. This is a must have if you are in the Roosevelt Road/Ridgeland vicinity! Thank goodness for Pete's in Oak Park. What do you do on a breathtakingly gorgeous fall day when you know nice days are numbered? Walk 2 miles to a hot dog stand! At least I thought it was a good idea, before we hit Roosevelt and started roasting in the sun. So we get to Pete's and I order up a pink lemonade, stat, to re-hydrate and cool down. I barely had time to take sip before our food was up. I then proceeded to chug my lemonade and order a refill. That'll cost you 50 cents, no free refills here. I think nostalgia has a lot to do with why Pete's Red Hot's has such a high rating. Granted I have only been there once, but still. I got a hot dog with fries (and that pink lemonade). The dog was vienna, my fave. A hot dog just isn't worth it if it isn't vienna. But the relish wasn't all that great and it was missing celery salt (what I used to think was a secret ingredient that only the chicago hot dog mafia knew about). Service was good. Food was ok. Food is inexpensive. Would I go back? Eh, only if I was right by it and hungry. Definitely not a 4 mile walk round trip. There are too many good hot dog joints in the Chicagoland area to make a special trip back to Pete's. Sorry Pete! read more

Their gyros are fabulous! Not too greasy but not dry at all! They have a number of toppings you can add and they are very reasonably priced! I wouldn't get their stuff to go because it does get soggy but they've got tables you can sit outside and eat at! read more

Highly overrated. Do not go out of your way to visit this place! This place is closer to standard than an exception in the sandwich shop world. I can't emphasize it enough. They must be paying their reviewers or else they have some other emotional attachment that has nothing to do with the food. No doubt the food is good tasting and good quality but nothing about this place makes it the best restaurant in Oak Park as it is currently rated. The hot dogs are Vienna beef and the gyros are Kronos so it means they taste good but no better than the thousands of other places that serve them. The Chicago dog tasted identical to one you would get from a Home Depot in the area. I also had the Italian Beef which is homemade. It has great a beefy and onion/garlic flavor but way too salty for my liking. So salty, I couldn't finish the beef which is unheard of for me. Portillos has it beat in my extensive beef book. No complaints about the fries, but it's hard to mess them up. The service was fast and the price was right - cheaper than Portillos by a few bucks and faster than Portillos by a few minutes. I would rather take my kids here than McDonalds which, from what I gathered from my visit, a lot of people from the area do. It's open until 10 which is nice as well. All in all, I respect that people like this place, but there is NO way it is 4.5 stars. 4.5 stars is nearly perfect. It's good, but not perfect. read more

A childhood favorite, yet I still find myself coming directly here right after stepping off the airplane when visiting family in the Oak Park area. In fact, my cravings are frequent. Very friendly staff consisting of the same family for the last 25 years +. Prices are very reasonable. The red hot is cooked to Chicago perfection, as is the Gyro. Not a big fan of the char burgers, but several of my family members are. Fries are wonderfully cooked and can be served to order if you ask nicely. I prefer mine cooked just a bit longer for a pleasant outter crisp and they oblige. Even the chicken sandwich is great, especially on locally baked Turano French bread. I am just amazed with how good it is. Perfect fast food place that's near me. I mostly get the gyros from here and they are huge I must say. They load up the meat and I usually just get extra cucumber sauce and tomatoes on it (no onion). The burgers are also good and filling. In terms of the price to me it's reasonable you get what you pay for. If you go there for the first time get one of the numbered meals that's along the wall! I'm always amazed that the staff is able to get even the most specialized order correct just by shouting it out. I've never seen them write anything down. I've been going to Pete's since I was in a stroller. I've been going there ever since. No other place comes close to the quality, price and fast service as Pete's. I usually pull out my trusty phone and call them 10 minutes before hand and give them the order. They always get it right. I love the dagwood and the hot dogs are tops. The italian beef is superb and the gyros are great too. I like my fries well done and with an occasional cup of cheese. Pete's has become the top spot for many people I know. Even my friend who has moved to Homer Glen makes the drive to Pete's once in a while for their great food. An old friend that has moved to Arizona, visited the Chi and made his first stop at Pete's. And it's all great! Pete's specializes in what I lovingly refer to as Friday night food. Diners can choose from cheeseburgers and fries, hot dogs and fries, gyros and fries, Italian beef sandwiches and fries, a super taco and fries, and many other offerings. Everytime I go the Pete's I order a grilled chicken sandwich on a bun. The chicken breast is enormous and fresh; it has been marinated and grilled to perfection. I can also recommend the double cheeseburger which rivals Five Guys in my opinion. Italian beef sandwiches (dipped, dry, or semi-dipped) and gyros are the most popular items on Pete's menus. Every single time I go here customers order those two items. While I've yet to try the gyro, the Italian beef is exceptionally lean and flavorful. Those diners who cannot tolerate spicy food should be sure to order it without peppers. Aside from those foods, Pete's also serves a variety of salads, milkshakes, onion rings, chopped steak and grilled cheese. Pete's may not serve the healthiest food but this is the food that built America. Most of the people who go to Pete's are regulars who know the drill: step to the counter (put your cell phone away) order your meal and wait. Keep your ears open; Pete's does not operate on a number system so cooks call out your order. Distracted customers will miss their food. An Oak Park fixture, Pete's attracts a wide and eclectic mix of people. All are welcome here. The only requirement is an appetite for flame broiled food. Although the restaurant contains several booths it's really a carry out joint. As a carry out joint, Pete's owners don't seem to be too concerned with the decor, but why should they? This restaurant has existed since the 1980s and shows no signs of suffering financially. It is typically crowded--especially on weekends and the day following a big holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas--and loyal customers would surely balk if any part of the restaurant were altered. As good as the food here is, I cannot recommend that people eat here all the time. Anyone who dines here more than twice a month should be arrested for attempted suicide. Nevertheless, I encourage anyone in the area to try Pete's when their refrigerator is empty or when they just don't feel like cooking on a Friday night. Pete's has what is perhaps the best Italian Beef sandwich I've ever experienced. The bread is appropriately soggy with au jus and the beef is perfect. When I eat an Italian Beef sandwich, I want the juice to run down my arm - and it did - and it IS perfect. As for the fries, awesome - hot and fresh and not the least bit soggy.
