I used to come here all the time like 10yrs ago. I always ordered the corn beef sub because it was so good and "full" of corn beef. I remember the place so well because I used to stop in after bringing my grandfather to have cancer treatments. The place is located across the street from the Turano bread factory so the bread is always fresh. Over the years I guess things change a little. The bread is still fresh but not as much corn beef as before. Also my grandfather beat cancer and is doing great well into his 80's. Only three stars doesn't mean bad, I'm just a harsh critic. Pete's Red Hot's is a typical Chicago dog place and for the most part they do things the right way. I have not tried their homemade beef but the quality of their Kronos gyros and Chicago-style Vienna hot dog will definitely call for a return trip. Unfortunately, the poor quality of their fries and improperly steamed Supreme tamales has knocked a couple stars off my rating. In fact, the fries are so pedestrian, I might have to bring my own sack next time. Pete's wont drag me in from miles but if you're in the area and looking for a tasty dog, Pete's will work. read more

I know I'm in the minority, but I think Pete's is just average to good. Joints like this (burgers, fries, red hots, polish, gyros) are a dime a dozen in Chicago, and I haven't really had anything from Pete's that makes me sure it's any better than the average one. This is the single best place in Oak Park for just about anything. I don't even know where to start. Hot dogs - Best hot dog I've had in my life. The key to enjoying it is to take the hot pepper off, but squeeze some of the juice out of them to give the dog a little kick. Hamburgers - Second best burger in Oak Park. It's one of the things I almost always get. As it used to be called, the 'Dagwood' is cooked just long enough to get all of the pink out of the patty, but keep it juicy. It's also the sloppiest hamburger I've ever had, so make sure to grab a few napkins! Fries - Golden and crispy, with just the right amount of skin left on. Great dipped in the BBQ sauce. Chicken dinners - The Grecian Chicken is not to be missed. It comes with a small salad and fries soaked with chicken juice. *salivates* The BBQ Chicken is also great! Dripping in one of the best sauces I've had. Chicken fingers - This was my go-to meal for years. They have a light breading on them, enough to add a small crunch, but not to overpower the chicken. Make sure to get extra BBQ sauce with them. Gyros - I've only tried a few bites from a friends gyro, but it was very good. A little spicy. Salad - The Grilled Chicken salad was the first thing I ever got from Pete's. The lettuce is always fresh, and the chicken is warm and juicy. Dessert - Occasionally they'll have small brownies under a glass cover at the counter. They're not the greatest, but they make a nice after dinner treat. People - THE friendliest people I've ever met. It always seems like they just love their jobs there. Seating - While not optimal, there's almost always an empty booth. And during the summer you can sit on benches outside. Speed - The longest I've ever waited was about 15 minutes, and that was during the dinner rush. Usually it take 5-10. Price - Decent price for the amount of food you get. I always say that if I ever got very rich I would go there once a day and try one new thing off their menu. They have so many things to try and just not enough time to try it. Any time somebody comes in from out of town, I make them go here. read more

I've had gyros, a burger, greek and bbq chicken from here, and although it has all been good and is rather close to my apartment, the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is b/c if given the choice between a gyro or burger from here or Mickey's, I'd take the latter every time. Can't believe I've been in the area for almost five years and hadn't been here. Cool old school place with fast food that is good quality and great prices. The building looks like its been there for 50 years. There is a small parking lot that always seems to be full. Line was out the door when I went last time. Highly recommend the greek chicken dinner, rib tips dinner comes in second place. Food came out quickly and very hot. Was still nice and hot when I got home from the 3 block walk. FOOD POISONING/URGENT CARE VISIT. My family ate food from there on last night (12/8/17). My daughter ate the Italian Beef around 10pm (ish). She woke me up yelling my name from her room after having been in severe abdominal pain for nearly 3 hours. She had thrown up in her bed and has been doing the same since 4:45am. I called Pete's and asked to speak with the owner. I tried to share with him that I wanted to share our experience. I shared that I wasn't trying to place him on the defense. That did no good. He immediately became defensive and grilled me - asking me had I been to the doctor, how did I know it was the Beef (I knew because that was the 1st thing outside of a small fry that she'd eaten all day after a very long day at school and after due to after school activities). I remained calm and was really just hoping for an empathic tone that sought to possibly apologize with sincerity and at least try to compensate with refund or something (not that we'll eat there again). NOPE!... that didn't happen. I thought we cld see it through at home with hydration and allowing things to run it's course, but my daughter is still in pain and vomiting. We're on our way to urgent care. I didn't think she had any of the Beef left over, but she refrigerated the rest before feeling horrible. It, along with one of the bags of puke is going to the urgent care with us. I'm hoping they will test it. I will also be placing a complaint with CDC. Things didn't have to be taken this far, but when you operate without compassion, Care, concern, or competence (serving tainted food), this is what happens. Update... She vomited again on the way to urgent care. My poor baby. read more

Simply yummy. We live blocks from here and it is our guilty secret. Gyros are awesome, greek salad included. Kids love the dogs/fries and burgers. Now and then spurgle for the shakes! My family and I took out some Pete's today. Gyros for them and 1/2 greek chicken for me. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the seasoning was out of this world. You can't get this kind of food in a fine dining restaurant in all of Colorado. Here in the greater Chicagoland area you can go to a small fast food restaurant and eat like a queen. The salad was fresh and perfect- red, ripe tomatoes, thinly sliced onion, yummy olives, crunchy lettuce and the most delicious feta I have ever had. I have had feta from delis, whole foods, cheese shops and this feta takes the cake. Clean, creamy, not overly salty- perfection. I love that the greek salad dressing isn't oily. It is still full of flavor, I assure you. The rest of my family were very happy with their gyros and fries. It is on the rare side that we all love a place like we all love Pete's. read more
