I go in here each time I wanted a quick bite. Place is small but it is clean and the vibe is cool. The staffs are all nice and friendly and they have wide selection on their menu. You can have everything you want from tacos to burgers, hotdogs and different sandwiches. My favorite is their Italian beef sandwich. Last time I went in here, I had the Italian beef sandwich and it was served fresh and hot. It is simple but it got a nice taste and flavor. Prices are also cheap that is why I keep going in here. The rib eye steak sandwich on garlic bread is what I'd assume the food in heaven might taste like. The only drawback is the lack of inside seating. I wanted Portillos but didn't feel like dealing with the traffic so I stopped into Pete's for the first time. Ordering was easy. The guy at the register was patient while I ordered several items which included two cheeseburger meal, hot dog with fries, an Italian beef and a gyro with fries. The counter is pretty high so I couldn't see behind it but it looked like the items were made to order which I always appreciate. I thought the burger was cooked well and had good flavor. I would've liked more of the toppings and I'm not a fan of shredded lettuce but nether of those are enough to say I won't go back again. My hot dog was still tasty hours later when I ate it for a late dinner. I also liked their fries but I still used ketchup for an extra boost. Overall a solid experience. Here lies a Simple yet effective hot dog stand that has stood the test of time in the area. A simple structure with ample parking. I've been here several times over 15-20 years but this is the first time in a decade and nothing has changed much (maybe prices but what are you gonna do) which is a good thing! There was a time I could go in grab my food and go .Now I have a need to check my order thru out before leaving. Pete's Red Hots located on the corner of Ridgeland and Roosevelt Road in Oak Park. There's a handful of parking spots and when you walk in you'll notice it's a clean but fairly small hot dog joint on the inside. There are some stools and a few tables inside along with a couple of picnic tables outside. I decided to try the hot dog. It came on a soft poppy seed bun. The hot dog itself was of the skinless variety and was well steamed. The pickle was thicker than I would have liked, but wasn't too sour, it was right about the same length as the hot dog itself allowing me to get a taste of pickle in every bite. There was a bit too much relish on the hot dog, but a fair amount of mustard and onions. I didn't detect celery salt, and the tomato slice that came on it was thick and not as long as the hot dog. The sport peppers used here weren't too hot and were a nice compliment to the dog itself. The dog also came with fairly bland fries. These were a bit too greasy for my tastes and after trying a few of them I decided I had my fill of them. Overall, Pete's is a solid Hot Dog joint, the hot dog is decent and the fact that they're open particularly late for an independent hot dog joint on a Sunday was a key component in my visiting. Pete's Red Hots of Oak Park homemade Rib Tips are freakin' good! They serve them up as a full order for $7.99 and it comes with Fries, Coleslaw and Garlic bread. Let me just say it only took less than 8 minutes and it was piping hot fresh. Their homemade BBQ sauce is the deal maker and if it was a soft drink I would order 16 ounces of it. By the time you added a drink with it and tax I was just over $10 bucks and well worth every penny. read more

I order my food and the retort is "faslkdfntenminutesasdfads," with the phone hanging up immediately. I like this part. I wait my ten minutes and pick up my food. Greek chicken dinner was bomb and I opted for the rice instead of the fries so I can remain under 250 pounds until I finally give the fuck up around age 30. Today, I got the rib tips dinner, WITH FRIES, because who gives a shit. This meal was far superior to the awesome Greek chicken and made me very sleepy. I really wish I could say this place sucks, that it's horrible, that the joint is filthy and obviously run by idiots who hate their jobs. But I can't. I can't because it's greasy and good. The Burger: No, it's not a grass-fed, gastro-pub euro-patty served on a pretzel roll with a side of aioli-oli-blah blah blah. It's the burger you remember from childhood. That juicy, cheesy, oniony kind that leaves streaks of grease running down your arm. The Gyro: I have a feeling these folks know a thing or two about making a gyro. And that's all I'll say. OK, here's the deal. I gave Pete's 3 stars. Maybe a bit harsh. Maybe not. Maybe it's spot on. Because Chicago is a dog town and the competition is pretty stiff. And what's 3 stars anyway? "A-OK". So yes, Pete's is A-OK. What's the good part? Quite a bit, actually. Excellent menu covering all the standard Chicago dog house items: Dogs, polish, Italian sausage, Italian beef, gyros, blah blah. Service? Oh yeah, with a smile. Good guys. The dog was just fine; the Italian beef a generous and tasty serve, the Italian sausage over-charred; the wife said she liked her burger. I didn't try the gyros so I can't say. Ambiance, well.... don't bother to polish your dress shoes, this is a dog hut. So, why not 4 or even 5 stars? To compete with the big dogs in town you gotta leap a few hurdles: First of all, you better ask me when I order a dog if I want it steamed or charred. Yeah, of course there's a difference. Don't assume I want it charred just because that's the best way (ok, it is) - some people want steamed. Little kids, for example, so just ask. Second, cheese fries should not ever be made with Cheez Whiz. Ever. They're supposed to be made with Merkts Cheese spread. But Pete's has cheaped out. You disagree? Move to Philly. Third, buns and bread - Italian beef should be on a crusty loaf, not some plastic-bagged tough french bread. Last, and this is a big one - if you aspire to 5-star dog status, you better have hand-cut fries. Over and out. No options. That's just the way it is. Commodity fries? No way. Just not good enough. So bottom line, if you're driving by and you have the urge, sure Pete's is A-OK. But if you want the real deal 5-star Chicago dog experience, keep on driving. read more

I love Petes. I've lived in Oak Park all my life. That's 39 years. And I've worked in and around Chicago...and have been to a LOT of corner Hot Dog joints. Petes is wonderful. Why? They have fabulous fries. Not super thick...not crinkle (I hate crinkle fries) and not those skinny matchstick fries that go limp in five minutes. And...everything tastes EXACLTY like it is supposed to taste. The hot dogs are straight up Chicago-style dogs. The gyros are nummy. The beef is quality. The hamburgers are excellent. And so long as you order from available menu items...they'll even do a special order. I like getting a grilled chicken breast made up just like a gyro. One thing they're not mentioned for is their sub sandwiches...which are classic deli style subs on hearty italian bread. If you're tired of Subway...or all of the fussy crap that other places try to pass off as an italian sub...try one. They remind me of the subs at Bismark. Good bread. Good meat. Not swimming in dressing/mayo...and pretty cheap. Also...they're fast. Though the place is showing its age...they don't skimp on CLEANING. The people are friendly. They'll kick teenagers out when they start getting obnoxious...and in nice weather...they'll humor me when I come sit outside for a couple of hot dogs with my dog. (And are nice enough to let me yell my order in the door when they're not too busy...and run it out to the picnic tables for me. But I have a feeling that this is their special dog service...) It's better than Nicks...though doesn't have pizza slices. The fries are better than Mickey's...and it almost rivals Kings and Queens in their heyday. I've been getting a number one, pickles only and a cup of cheese for over ten years. I went to the elementary school two blocks away and if we had parental permission to leave for lunch they'd walk us over to get lunch. With quick service they're perfect for lunch with a time restraint. Their fries are delicious and their sandwiches are great. When I'm not that hungry I'll just grab a hotdog but if I have more of an apatite then I'll get a burger or an Italian beef sandwich.
