First experience with Pete or I should say second first was when I dropped off my two pair of pants second was today when I picked them up. I gave receipt to Pete, here retrieved my pants. I was ready to leave when he said that will be 28 dollars, I said I paid he said no I did not because he did not write paid on the receipt. This went back forth about three times. I was absolutely positive I paid but at that point I understood receipt was not marked and that was his system. So since it was only cash I had to go a couple buildings down to use the ATM and get cash. I was a tad upset because I knew I paid and that I did not ensure it stated that in my receipt. In short I returned to pay him and he insisted I did not pay and accepted my word that I had paid and that he probably made an error. I read his Yelp reviews and it was the reason I went to him. I have not even tried on the pants he tailored but I don't need to because Pete has found another loyal customer with many friends that will receive my recommendation. You just don't find this type of integrity and work ethic anymore except inDowney at Pete's Tailor Shop. read more

Before going to Pete's Tailor Shop I read all the reviews which were mostly good. I did read one review from someone who stated that Pete would not do the the type of alteration she wanted. So she left. I thought, well one bad review is to be expected. You can't please everyone. So I decided to go and see if he could hem a dress for me. First thing that bothered me was he was immediately short with me. I said hello and was in the process of explaining what I needed while I was pulling out the dress from the bag. He says with an attitude and a hand gesture rushing me, "Well I don't know let me see." He then tells me he can't hem the dress because of the type of material it is. Which by the way is just a simple polyester dress. So no problem I left. Thinking maybe I have some impossible request, I drive down to Downey Tailors on 2nd Street crossing my fingers that it can be done. The man there was very nice and patient. He gave me very clear instructions to put the dress on so he could measure exactly the length I wanted it. He then took the dress and said I could have it ready in two days! FYI if Pete has to turn people away, then he clearly lacks some skills! read more

I went in with an alteration request- to shorten a pair of (brand new in the package) thermal underwear. I handed him the new unpackaged underwear. He said that he couldn't do this type of work. Puzzled, I went to straight to another local tailor in Downey. They said it was "simple, no problem at all." I've gone to Pete's once before where he said he could not do a simple alteration. I needed to have some shirts tailored. I read many great reviews of this place, so I decided this would be the place I would have the work I needed done. Showed up to have some long sleeve shirts shortened and before I even showed him the shirts the man there said he could not do it. I politely turned and left assuming it could not be done. I decided to stop by another tailor shop on my way home (Cirilo's Tailor) and the man there said it required some work but it can be done. He took the time to explain to me the work that goes into tailoring a shirt but he would gladly do it. That's the type of service we all deserve. I will not visit Pete's shop due to the poor service. read more

Asked if they could alter the bust area in my dress and the man there said he couldn't fix it that they only do alterations I thought to myself umm sir this is an alteration to a dress but I just politely said okay thank you and left never going back here. read more

If you have some pants that you love how they fit take him those as a template to make your other ones fit like it. He did less than inch on some of mine but it feels like a huge difference. I haven't taken anything else but pants so can't attest to the other reviews read more

It was a random choice to go here since I did not know of any good tailors in the area. When I showed up, it looked like a little hole in the wall joint. But I have had some of the best luck with hole in the wall, mom and pop shops. BOY AM I GLAD I WENT HERE! Service was great. I had three pairs of my jeans hemmed and they all look great. The hemm looked professional and they fit PERFECT. As a matter of fact, I am going there today! Great prices and great work; not to mention fast. Can't go wrong here. read more

First off my family has been coming here for 14 years ever since we moved to Downey and today my Mom and I came in to get my suit and her dress tailored for my sister's wedding. Pete began to take my measurements and my mom was trying to let him know that the pant length shouldn't be too long or too short (she doesn't speak English very well) and it seemed like Pete was put off by this. He began to get aggressive saying that we shouldn't tell him how to do his job and not knowing what to do my mom was saying "I'm sorry" repeatedly. Seeing my mom get yelled at due to a language barrier was so off-putting and so rude; she was crying as we left. Even when we were leaving out the door my mom was saying "please it's for my daughter's wedding I'm sorry". I tried explaining to him that we weren't trying to tell him anything, just how we wanted my pants to fit. I ended up telling Pete that what he had just done was really hurtful and disrespectful. He shrugged it off and started yelling in another language what I assume were insults. To all my fellow Latinos out there: I'd advise not coming here. It's not right to treat people badly because they don't know how to speak English. I would highly recommend Cirilo's Tailorshop on Paramount Blvd. They were very welcoming and consoled my mom as they saw she was upset. read more

Sadly, like other reviewers I did not have a good experience. I brought in three simple dresses to be taken in and without even touching them he said he cannot work with the material...they were each a different material. I brought them to Cirilos and they did the alterations without ever mentioning anything about the material being difficult. One dress was polyester which probably half of all clothes are made of. I think maybe Petes just has so much business they can't be bothered. read more

Based on reviews, I brought one dress shirt and dress pants to have him make it more slim fit since my normal tailor (Mike's Tailor in DTLA) was too far. Did a pretty good job and the price was reasonable, so I brought in my whole work wardrobe and some jeans (10 dress shirts, 6 pants, 4 jeans) to get fitted. Some came out good but some were no longer wearable. Some shirts were too tight in the chest (despite only asking him to make the waist area fit better) and one of my jean's length was too short (cut off too much material). When I asked him to fix some of the problem, he gave me a hard time and tried to blame the original design of the shirts. He begrudgingly took back the clothes to redo his work (3rd time in some cases). Ultimately, it ended up not fitting the same so I don't even wear those shirts and have to sag a little when I wear that one pair of jeans. Pretty disappointed in his work since I spent way too much money at Pete's for the experience I received. My normal tailor would have been cheaper and would have done a better job and fixed any nits I had with no complaints and would never cut off too much material to where it can't be fixed. Guess I have to drive to DTLA to get my alterations done next time. 2 stars since some stuff came out ok. read more
