I visited Petland in Bolingbrook because I was looking to get a hamster. Unfortunately, the conditions in the small animal area were concerning. Hamsters, rabbits, ferrets, birds, and guinea pigs were kept in open cages, and employees were encouraging customers to remove the animals' igloo-style hiding places so they could grab them. Many of the animals looked very scared and stressed. Another concern was that the hamsters did not appear to have water available at the time I was there. Small animals need constant access to water, so this was alarming to see. I did end up purchasing a hamster because I had come in specifically looking for one, but I almost decided against it due to the conditions. The container they placed the hamster in was extremely small and made of very thin cardboard. Within minutes she had already chewed holes through both sides of the box. Thankfully I had a shoebox in my car and was able to move her into something more secure for the drive home. To be honest, experiences like this made other pet stores such as PetSmart look much better by comparison. In my experience, they typically provide sturdier transport boxes and appear to maintain better basic care standards for their animals. I hope the store takes a closer look at how these animals are housed and handled. Small animals are often overlooked, but they still deserve proper care, constant access to water, and environments that reduce stress. read more

Since the local law changed that IL businesses can't sell dogs (2022 I believe), this placed has taken a toll. The place really keeps limited stock and is geared towards more aquatic pets, birds or bunnies. If you're looking for the basics then you're good but if you're looking to browse at all, then you probably have a better chance hitting a bigger chain in general. read more

I bought countless hampers last week Saturday. When i arrived home today I devastatingly found one of them dead. Cold and stiff. These hampsters only been in their environment for only a week. It's a cliche but I would give zero stars if possible. We acquired a dog from pet land that ended up having kennel cough and giardia. Our first vet visit was supposed to be covered but they aren't. Our first vet visit was with a vet who told us they haven't worked with petland in months. Then when we submitted the claim the "insurance" company said nothing was covered and never got back to me. It's been a month. I called the store and spoke to Samantha who said "what do you want me to do" in response to us telling her our dog was sick. My ex and I got a puppy from here. Everything seemed legit. It was sort of like buying a car-- lots of paper work and y'all of extended warranties! Lol I felt we paid a lot for our puppy but we could not find a puppy to adopt to bring home to our senior dog. Our puppy came with a lot of food and some odds and ends they insisted we needed like a water bottle for his crate. We took the pup to his first check up and he had kennel cough and giardia. You can imagine how worried we were with this little guy sick and hoping our senior didn't get it. I know that it's not uncommon but still. It's not something you want to have to worry about. It was also a great experience because you can pick up the birds and pet the other animals. We bought a dog from here back in 2012 and she had severe hip dysplasia and pneumonia within a week of bringing her home. She went through countless surgeries for her hip that petland wouldn't even cover the cost for. Don't even get me started on how they treat small animals....Syrian hamsters in a cage at 7 months of age?!!! They are solitary animals and fight with each other. No wheel to run either. Most reptile care is atrocious- many are cohabbed and have wrong set ups. I found a baby blue tongue skink that was on its last leg. In about a 5 gal tank, looked dehydrated, no humidity, skinny, tons of stuck shed. I asked about him and they said he was bullied by a previous tank mate and was still recovering. Employee said he was totally fine and healthy because he was still active and eating. I questioned why they would be selling a sick animal in the first place As he couldn't even open his eyes fully. I went back a couple days later to see if they would surrender him to me but they had pulled him to be "treated for mites, because they OBVIOUSLY wouldnt sell a sick animal." I don't really know how to start this, but my experience today has led me to never spend another dime at petland. I've been fish keeping since I was 10 with my dad who took me to the Petland in Schaumburg, so my memories of the place are full of little kid wonder and excitement. However, while I was shopping today (at the Petland in Bolingbrook) I experienced the most rude, condescending, and unprofessional customer service I've ever experienced anywhere. I was in last weekend and got some floaters (that are doing great), so I wanted to get more of them, and either two powder blue dwarf gouramis (a male and female), or 3 male powder blue dwarf gouramis (PBDG). I have been planning, building, and stocking my tank since the beginning of October, so I know what I'm looking for. When I check out the fish, I see there is a singular PBDG in one tank, a regular female Dwarf Gourami in a tank below, a male DG in the tank next to her, and further along the wall is a tank full of more PBDG. Having looked at the fish and trying to figure out the gender of the PBDG, I go to the fish desk, and ask the female employee if someone can help me get some fish. The male employee who was helping me asked what I was looking for, so I said was looking for some PBDG, and then we got to the tank with the singular PBDG so I asked him if that was a male and the other tank was females. He told me he couldn't sex them but that he would go ask. When he comes back, he brings who I presume to be his manager with, who proceeds to tell me that the DG are in the two tanks below (the ones labeled male/female). I said, I was wondering about the PBDG to which this manager responds, "they're the same fish. Just like how we're all humans, it's just differences in colors." Never once did I ask whether they are the same fish. And the condescension in his tone as if I didn't know that Dwarf Gouramis are the same fish was insulting. I've done my research. I was ready, willing, and excited to spend upwards of $60 for 3 fish if needed, but instead of being told both tanks were males and separated for other reasons right off the bat, I was told they are the same fish. I left after that, buying one last bag of floaters (which were half dead, of course - and not just brown, brown and mushy). On top of this, they still don't know how to properly take care of axolotls who need to be kept at cooler temperatures, and on substrate they can't ingest. They keep their axolotls in with warm watered plants, and gravel they can easily ingest and die from. They also have clearly been cannibalizing each other which is not normal for healthy axolotls and is in fact a sign of stress. I recognize that losing my business doesn't matter to Petland, but if you want to know whether I'd suggest going, it's a resounding no. Find a local fish store who might be able to work with you better, and where your money will be actually valued. read more

Went in this week 19th to purchase a bunch of fish for one of my tanks. I've been buying tanks, plants, rocks, food, everything from this location throughout this year. Couple thousand bucks or so spent there this year.... Call them on the 20th, about 18 hours later from purchase, and let the manager know all 8 tetras are riddled with ick. They say just bring them in we will refund you for them.... How am I supposed to get 6-8 tetras out of a fully planted tank? Impossible... I have dozens of fancy Shrimp and 30-40 nerite snails in it, can't treat it for ick. They confirmed they got the tetras in hours before I bought them and they didn't check them. They went through three employees hands before leaving with me in my car. 0 quality control. They have no period of incubation but for the first time after dozens of times buying fish there, manager said before you put any fish from us in your tank, you need to incubate.... They said we tell that to people every time people buy fish from us. Wrong never heard that until now. Manager was a jerk on purpose. Said it wasn't worth his time or anyone's to deal with this. I asked for them to send a professional to retrieve them from our tank and replant our 500-750 dollars in plants, so that we didn't have to treat our tank for ick and kill hundreds of dollars in snails and shrimp. He said not worth our time. I asked to speak to next manager up and they ping ponged us back and forth trying to get to this guy Dave who supposedly oversees both locations. Wouldn't take our call and eventually was able to find out this place uses a third party to deal with issues like this. We now have a claim open with this pet company which seems like it will go no where. This is doing to cause major loss, hundreds of dollars and the loss of living creatures, they don't care. Refused to send someone to retrieve them said it wasn't worth the time. Place totally chases the buck and has zero quality control and doesn't care about living creatures, well some of the people don't apparently. Made no recommendations how to help other than bring them in. Really bad situation, avoidable. Refuse to help right a wrong. They are currently treating their massive neo tetra tank October 21 2023, go look and see for yourself. This place is so big it doesn't care or have time to help save the lives of the things they sell. Again go check out for yourselves, ask about the whole tetra tank with ick and the shipment they literally got and threw in the tank and an hour later left with me no checking if any were sick and literally didn't check when bagged and given to me either. NO QUALITY CONTROL OR CARE AND NO HELP EVEN THOUGH THEY AGREED THEY MESSED UP. read more

I purchased a cockatiel 3/18/2022 at petland bolingbrook. Very excited as it was a gift for my fiance. 2 days later the bird starts showing symptoms or illness. I call petland explaining the bird is couging an weezing. Kevin, tells me to "take to the vet. To get a check up." I take the cockatiel to the vet. As the birds at the vet the bill right off the bat is $500.00 do the the vet saying cockatiel needs oxygen an has respitory signs aswell as green uruates. I call PETLAND store back an talk to kevin. Tells me to proceed. Will be reimbursed after going through the pet solutions claim process. So i proceed with the process for the cockatiel. The following day, the vets gave him more meds. After picking him up had to do a 7 day medicine treatment with 5-7 liquids. The total OUT OF POCKET BILL is now $1628.42. I call the claims department going through all the steps. I talked to a handful of people in the department about the bill ( Jerome, Jasmine, Marissa, Vanessa, Destiny (ALL CLAIMS DEPT. EMPLOYEES)) explaining how I have only owned the bird for 2 days an had to pay that amount. Talking to so many people i got offers of reimbursement for the bird, material. Then bird, material, half of vet bill. They even offered me to exhchange birds after the fact I just got done taking the bird to the vet an recieving medicine for it. Which did pass away on the 6th day of owning. Due to health issues were so horrific. After going back an forth i even asked them "Ill take the full reimbursement in STORE CREDIT". Just to speed up the process because I shop there all the time. I requested to talk to an even higher up person. Which I did get in contact with. Her name is Kelly, After going back an forth an the aggravation of a month kelly tells me the final offer is "ONLY FOR THE BIRD". I was in shock. As though i am being punished for wanting to recieve my refund due to so many of the employees directing me to go through the process of the claims by taking the bird to the vet, an telling me ill recieve full refund. Aswell as they "Understand, an are unsure why I am not getting a full refund." I even went back to the store to talk to an employee who is very smart in the fields of birds. Told my fiance an I that the batch they bought off someone was a bad batch. Yet the store still sold the Cockatiels. Majority of them died. I am being treated very unfairly an am very dissapointed in how the claims process works for small animal claims. Being told to do one thing an will recieve reimbursement. I asked if I could play with one of them & sure enough, the puppy was too skinny you can actually feel their bones. I felt so bad for the puppy & wanted to buy it to take it out of its situation but I stopped & thought, buying it would be supporting their puppy mill. DO NOT!!!! I RE-RE-REEEEEEEEEEEE-REPEATTTTTT! Do NOT BUY A DOG from this place! About a month ago, I got my puppy off Craigslist and my family came to visit and see him. My aunt asked me to take her to a puppy store to get one because she wanted a puppy so I took her here. We found her the CUTEST dog and they GUARANTEE you the dogs are up to date on shots AND have recent visits with the vet. We came home with the dog about 10-11pm. We were the only two customers there in the store after hours because it was that busy, (which is completely fine), but with that being said right after we left we went straight home that same night her puppy played with mine so we could get him a little more comfortable around the house........a day later she takes him to the vet and finds out he has Kennel Cough. The vet even told her he had to haven gotten it from that place because it was pretty bad. Three days later my dog gets horribly sick. I rushed him to an emergency vet and yes, he HAS KENNEL COUGH. It has now been over a week and NOTHING has gotten better. I'm fully aware kennel cough is a small cold BUT it can DEFINITELY turn into pneumonia. My issue is when I called them to talk to them about it the guy CONTINUED to cut me off from me explaining what is going on. He told me since I didn't buy my dog from here, in his words "THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM"......THEN HAD THE NERVE TO BASICALLY SAY HE COULDVE GOTTEN IT FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.......boy HOWWWWW!? The only dog in my family is mineeeee! And just by me leaving a review (my first and only review on a company I have EVER written in my life) you would know I take AMAZING care of my dogs. Bought a Daniff puppy with parvo, November 2017. After 2-3 days the dog was sent to the vet, where she stayed for about a week. We thought we brought our precious puppy home for good- only to send her back within a few days. Something else was wrong and we had to put the poor baby down bc the quality of life was something we needed to honor at this point. That is a lot of heartbreak, suffering and money after 10 days. STAY AWAY. The staff here was beyond indifferent throughout this nightmare. I'd like to add that my dog was accompanied by another puppy in the cage. Full disclosure, my husband once worked for the Aquarium side of this shop, and while he worked there, I found this pet store to be pretty decent. But that was years ago. Fast forward to last night. I've been looking everywhere for a single, female rat. None of the shelters I contacted got back to me, and no luck with the breeders I know of, so I found myself in love with another pet store's very last female while I was there to buy general supplies. Here's the thing, though - rats are social and you really shouldn't have a single one by itself. So last night I was on a mission to locate another female, so that I could "rescue" the lonely rat and have the pair of females that I wanted. My husband said I should try the Petland. I was in that area, and he remembered the store as having a good variety of healthy rats. I headed over to check out what they had. My first complaint: all the "pet counselors" were "busy." To make a long story short, I had to basically beg for someone to give me the time of day. They weren't very busy, but the employees ignored me. Pushing mill puppies is a better commission. Anyway, I finally get some help and then the decision to buy is made for me. I absolutely will not buy a rat from them. I suspect they have them as feeders, not as pets - and if that's the case, they should have said as such instead of wasting my time. How else can you explain the fact that they put sexually mature male and female rats in the same enclosure? Do they WANT to sell pregnant mothers? Further, their associate couldn't even tell which were male and which were female. Seriously? It's pretty clear in rats... To add injury to insult, the associate was lifting and dragging the rats around by their tails. THEIR TAILS. This is animal cruelty, plain and simple. I am never shopping at a Petland, ever again. They need to train their associates on proper care and handling, and they need to store genders separately. They need to disclose if a rodent is a feeder or a pet, and not sell them as the other for convenience's sake. They need to pay attention to all of their customers and not just the ones dropping $1000+ on a puppy mill dog. All creatures, great and small, deserve respect that this place clearly can't offer. Its a fish emporium! I love this place for the tropical fish! They have an AWESOME selection of fish both fresh and salt water. They also have a large variety of plantings. The fish are healthy and the displays are out of this world! During my last visit, Joe, was extremely helpful and patient beyond compare. As a matter of fact, every time I go, the assistance is awesome. Aside from fish, they also have ponds/accessories, dogs/cats (not sure where they are from), ferrets, birds, hermit crabs, and mother other things to add to ones family. The fish section is really exceptional. The plant selection for freshwater planted tanks is above and beyond my expectations for a chain store. I just moved to Chicago from Memphis and this store is my current favorite for quality plants. HC is sold here, along with flag fish (hair algae eaters), baby tears, and shrimp. The fish section employees are all very knowledgable. The bad reviews for this store are more geared towards the dog section, which I won't make any comment about. I got my sweet girl from here she's a standard poodle everything from start to finish was great the only thing I'm not a fan of is the warranties and the vets they work with. The vet I tried to take her to wanted way too much for vaccines that she did no receive from the store so I will be taking her elsewhere. Wow what an amazing swing back-and-forth of a bad experience to good experience to I hated experience. I recently attended the Aquashella show in Niles. Which was awesome by the way. One of the vendors that was there was Aquarium Adventure. I stopped and spoke with them and told them how much I liked their store at Golf and Roselle. They then suggested I check out their Bolingbrook store. That's where my story begins. We were in the Bolingbrook area and decided to check out the store. We walked in the store that seemed clean it had an open style floor plan. I went into the aquarium livestock section and was very disappointed. The displays were dirty, dark and there were many skinny and unhealthy looking fish in the tanks. I was there with my wife and daughter and they were visiting with the small animals on the other side of the store like ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs etc. I didn't find anything even considering buying and on our way out of the store my daughter asked if she could play with the puppy. I happily granted her request because we already have two dogs and there was no chance we were going home with a dog. We ended up visiting with three dogs and to my surprise I absolutely fell in love with this amazingly cute Yorky. The staff that helped us with the dogs are fantastic very supportive and not pushy for the sale at all. Sow my wife and I went back-and-forth deciding whether we should buy this dog or not. Which was very very expensive. We had almost driven away from the store and decided to go back in one last time. We spoke with our sales person and asked to figure out a way to lower the price of the dog. She brought it to her manager who came to talk with us. They did lower the price of the dog and I also asked for an extra bag of food and a dog carrier/bag. He seemed reluctant but I was given the impression that we had come to an agreement and that I would get my requests. So I didn't know because I've never purchased a dog. I've always rescued them but buying a dog it's a lot like buying a car. There are agreements to sign paperwork to fill out and then of course you have to pay. So as we prepare to pay they ring up the pet carrier bag and I informed them that the manager had approved to include the bag. Doing their job they went to approve it with the manager who went on break so via text message and then later a phone call he said no and told us he would give us 20% off the bag he had previously agreed to give to us. This really frustrated me and took me from a very happy place to being very frustrated and even angry. So overall the experience was a negative one. The fish section of the store was neglected the young sales staff was very enjoyable and courteous. The puppy area was clean and well-maintained and then over a $48 bag the manager had me leave angered and frustrated. I will not go back to that store. Not only is it close to an hour away from my home but if you can't count on the manager to be straight with you I certainly won't count on the rest of the staff. read more

This visit would have been a 5/5. BUT there was this one employee by the puppies, she had brown hair and bangs and she was so rude. I don't understand how you can work with puppies all day and yet be so rude and miserable. She looked like she hated her job and her life. I will be returning when she's not there. She ruined a perfectly good experience of playing with puppies. I was so happy but her attitude killed my perfectly good mood. Please do something about this employee. read more
