Very good pita gyro Seems harder to find gyro's made with a nice pita instead of the flat bread these days. I had a 9" Lamb and beef Gyro (they offer 7" or 9") after a bike ride and it was delicious. Easily could have eaten a second, but then I'd have to go ride it off. Definitely looking for forward to being in the area again. I also saw large portioned plates of food that also looked delicious. Was too hungry and excited about seeing a nice looking gyro that I forgot to take a picture... next time. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to receive such fresh, tasty ingredients from this little place. I ordered the gyros wrap (beef/lamb) and the meat was great quality, as were the vegetables. The pita bread was soft and tasted homemade. I would have just like a bit more spice in my tzatziki sauce, but, I'll survive. Great spot to try if you happen to be in the area. Very casual little restaurant where most people take their dinner to go. I expected more out of the interior, but they made up with it in the delicious Lamb Gyros with Tzatziki sauce and a fresh, fluffy pita. Everything is made to order and they shave the meat off of a rotating piece of lamb and beef. The inside was a little grimy and the tables squished together. I would recommend calling your order in. Street parking is metered up and down that area. You can run in and pay and run home with some yummy food. The woman at the counter was friendly and the Spanakopita similar to my mom's homemade, which is saying a lot. A very good add on to a gyro. The chicken shawarma was great - the chicken was grilled nicely and the sauce was really good. It was a little messy to eat since it was served like a taco rather than wrapped up like a burrito. It also could have done with a little bit more cucumbers/vegetables (there were a couple hanging out near the bottom), but the food was so good that I didn't mind. I preferred the lamb gyro over the chicken shawarma, but both were delicious. The restaurant is tiny. It only has 4 tables, 3 of which have 2 seats. The 4th table has 3 seats. Just about right for a sit and a snack during a leisurely spin around the Lamorinda (Lafayette-Moraga-Orinda) bike loop --- we weren't the only people in helmets and "clippy-shoes." I work in a dental office nearby and this is definitely our number one sport for lunch! The place is pretty small so if you're going to eat there make sure you don't have a big group with you. I would definitely recommend ordering ahead of time to go. I usually get the Troy Salad ($7), it's delicious! The chicken is seasoned perfectly and there's lots of goodies in the salad, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions! The dressing is nice and zesty. The salad is a good, generous size and they also give a side of pita bread! I've also had the Greek gyros. A lot of the same flavors as the salad but add a delicious tzaziki sauce. If I go the gyros route I usually order a side of their crispy, delicious fries! They're a nice sized order to share with someone else. All in all great lunch spot! Great portions! Solid Gyros for Orinda and Contra Costa in general. However, with Berkeley right over the hill it is hard to be the best gyro. We go here fairly consistently when we are visiting my fiance's family and are generally happy with the food. I like the Chicken Lemon Soup. read more

This place looks a mess. The people working here don't talk to you or greet you and are extremely rude about your order. They don't want to give you your order unless you know your order number, which they did not give to me. Food is average at best. There are MUCH better options in Orinda within very short walking distance. read more

Mmm... lamb souvlaki! It's a teeny little place, so eating in is rather annoying unless you can score one of the outside tables, but whenever I'm in Orinda (every 3 months or so), I always stop and get an order to go... which makes the trip back to Oakland an exercise in patience, since the delicious smell permeates the car and makes me want to pull over and eat at the side of the road! Mmmm, this is a toughy. We tried Petra a few weeks back and weren't really blown away. I mean, it wasn't memorable at all. I do remember that the falafel was kinda mushy and the hummus was chunky and bland. My husband loved the lamb though, he said it was so moist and flavorful. So I'm torn. I feel like a 3 is too low, it really was only an average meal. So this is really a 3.5. Not bad, but we won't be back either, we'd rather Turquoise down the street. read more

Located in downtown Orinda, Petra Cafe is a good place to go if you're looking for okay Mediterranean/Greek food. The restaurant is small, but service is quick. The food is okay - so far we've tried the baklava, the falafel, the tsatsiki, the chicken gyro, and the chicken souvlaki. We end up hitting up Petra Cafe when we're starving, craving Mediterranean/Greek food, and we don't want to travel far. If you have time, there's better Mediterranean/Greek food elsewhere! read more

I highly recommend coming here! The fodd is consistantly great. I always get an Athenian and Tzaziki appetizer. My boyfriend always gets the Spartan platter. We are both always happy with what we get. There aren't many vegetarian option so its not the best place to go if you dont eat meat. the only bad thing is that there isnt much seating available. If you want to eat there, be prepared to sit outside. They are usually pretty busy and sometimes the tables inside are all taken. they validate parking and theres usually plenty of parking available in the parking garage. They often make a tasty dish, but it's always something with these folks... get the order wrong, short you on something cheap like the pita, often out of something like hot sauce, claim to never have had a dish you got yesterday, over salt the soup... The customer service and attitude is the only thing that's consistent and it's bad. I let these things slide for a many years, going back because I was nearby or in a hurry, but I'm done with this place. Tonight's meal was the last straw. Barely edible. read more

I'm at Petra cafe right now as I'm writing this review. This place is more than just a restaurant with amazing gyros. Here's why, first off my phone died way earlier today in sf so I took Bart to orinda. I asked around small shops for phone chargers to call my ride. But no luck. I stopped by Petra cafe looking for a charger. She not only gave me her charger, she also gave me her cell phone to use while my phone charges. She offered water and said I'm free to wait here for my ride. She over delivered by far, I ended up ordering a lamb gyros and it was amazing. I really appreciate and enjoy the hospitality I received here and I'm glad I found this place by accident. I will be returning for more gyros too read more

RUDE! My family and I were so excited to move to Orinda in August 2013, and after a full day of moving, we came to Petra for our first official dinner in town. We are both vegan and have found most Mediterranean restaurants offer vegan safe meals with the exception of feta and tzatziki toppings which you can request to not be put on your food. Our first visit wan't bad, and the man who was working the counter was very nice and answered all of our questions about what was in the food. The second visit, and every visit thereafter the young lady who works the counter always acts annoyed when we request there to be no feta and/or no tzatziki put on the platter or the falafel sandwich. I usually ignore it but last night was the last straw. I was there with my 10 year old and this has to have been my 10th visit over the last two months. I ordered two greek platters and reminded her to not put cheese on it. We sat outside to enjoy the weather and wait for our food, and about 5 minutes later she comes and tosses the plates on the table and puts two rolled up forks and knives in the center of the table and walks away. I could see if they were busy as to why she would have been so short with us but there was only one other couple and they already had their food. A few moments later I noticed feta cheese crumbled on both of our plates. I brought both plates in and took blame for the mistake by saying "I might have forgotten to ask you not to put feta cheese on it." When I asked if they could fix it, she shook her head no. What? "What do you mean, no? Every time I come in here I ask for no feta and no tsatziki." In response she said something to the two cooks there in another language and they proceeded to scape the food off of the plate avoiding eye contact with me. Super rude, and very disappointing from a place so close to our new house in our new city. While we finished the food we could eat, I later saw the young lady walk a bag of food out to a man in a Mercedes. Must be nice to get that sort of treatment from Petra. We will never eat here again. Turquoise is one block away and the owner is very nice. Eat there instead. read more

This is my favorite lunch spot in Orinda. The food is as good or better than other much more expensive "Mediterranean" restaurants in the area. When it comes to lunch on workdays, you want good food that is both cheap and fast. Unfortunately this usually leads to fast food. Petra is a great healthy alternative to fast food, but it is still cheap and fast. I like the very popular Troy salad and the greek platter. read more
