I'm an Arab, and this place was one of the top (if not THE top) that I have ever tried when it comes to Arabic food in California. So weird that nothing was as delicious and authentic even in the big cities. People who work there are so awesome and flexible. If you want to replace some part of the meal due to allergy or preference, they'd do that with a huge smile ! Not the worst I've had, not the best. We visited Petra for lunch yesterday after driving by it several times over the last year and meaning to try it. We ordered the hummus to start, a meatball sandwich - with fries, and the beef/lamb shawerma. The hummus came first and it was okay. It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. To be honest, I actually enjoy the hummus that I buy prepackaged at the grocery store, or my homemade hummus, much more. The texture was grainy and the hummus was garlicky but other than that, not much flavor. The pita slices that came with were super thin and just average. They were a little hot - had to wait for them to cool down - but were like any prepackaged pita that I've had but thinner - there was no pocket. The meatball sandwich was my boyfriend's choice and he took about three bites and said he was done. Again, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't good. The meatballs looked like and tasted like processed meatballs, same with the sauce - like something from a jar. The bread was nice and toasty but, didn't overcome the overall sandwich. The fries, however, were good. Crispy but not greasy - they were the best thing we had. I ordered the lamb/beef shawerma on pita with the tzatziki sauce and . . . took two bites and was done. There was an odd flavor that I couldn't identify or get past. I tried the components separately (the sauces and the meat) to try to identify where the odd flavor was coming from (thinking maybe I could eat around it) and wasn't able to. The pita was the same thin pita but it was toasted and, again, just okay. So, I ate a few more fries and we both decided we were done. $25.00 and we threw away about 85% of the food we received. I love Mediterranean food and have had such good food from other places. Sorry, I don't mean to be harsh but, this is how it was. Went today (10/7/14) for dinner. Food: -Ordered a large beef and lamb shawarma gyro -half for dinner, half for late night snack. This was a delicious, healthy choice that left my taste buds happy and appetite sated. I ordered Turkish coffee and it was the best cup of Turkish coffee I have had to date! If you want a full-flavor meal without the guilt, come here! Service: -The lady serving us, presumably the owner, is a warm and friendly lady. We were all too happy to express our compliments and gratitude for such a wonderful meal. Ambiance / Environment: - The exterior looks nice but it's definitely what I would characterize as a mom-n-pop shop with its relative size and limited staff. Honestly, Tehachapi's buildings could stand for some updating. I hope the owners continue to flourish and can grow into space that doesn't look so aged. read more

Still new to Mediterranean food, but I know I like it. Heard so many good things about Petra, so I finally tried it. If you look in the side window it looks like there is not much seating, however, there is an additional side with plenty of tables. The servers does not come to your table to take your order, you order at the front. We took the menus to our table to figure out what we wanted. They do bring your food to your table though. I ordered the chicken Kabobs which was really moist and packed with flavor. The portion was huge and I had plenty to take home. It came with hummus, pita bread, rice, and some sort of tomato, maybe cucumber relish. OMG! Soooo good to your tastebuds. The kids got pizza, which is on a pita bread, and surprising enough was delish! My son ordered the chicken pesto pizza and I'm not a pesto fan, but it had just enough pesto it didn't overpower the dish. Y husband is kinda picky when it comes to exploring different types of food. He ordered the lamb and beef plate and he loved it! He was bold enough to try everything on his plate and I'm so happy he absolutely loved it....and he tells it like it is! We did order the fresh fries abuse it looked so good on a picture someone posted on Yelp...and yes it was!!! It was very good and crisp! End it with their Baklava! Best I've ever had. No joke!!! I got the philly cheese steak recently and the meat was good and so were the veggies but the cheese they use and the amount used I was not a fan of. So much cheese it overwhelms the flavors of the meat I could finish it and it made the bread soggy. Their meats are good though. read more

We love Petra's! We drive an hour to get here, the drive is totally worth it. Anything that you order here will be delightful. Everyone is quick to order hummes, since it's familiar, but don't be afraid to try items that you can't pronounce. The hummes is homemade, they use thini in it, which can be expensive but it can't be shorted in a good hummes. Baba ghanoouj is delicious, creamy and smokey. I love the shawerma and other wraps they offer, like falafel and lamb. It's loaded with meat and toppings, all homemade and all good. The pita bread they use is top quality; it's the same brand that I use. They offer an impressive selection of tea, my favorite is mint tea, which can be ordered iced or hot. read more

I almost hate to rate this place as 5 stars as it is a HIDDEN GEM in Tehachapi. I have been travelling past Tehachapi for years and have never stopped in this town, what a HUGE miss I was making. This place is family owned and run by authentic Greek folks. I have dealt with many Greeks and you can tell when you see the mom and dad, they are serous about the quality of the food and it is the BEST I have had in a long time (since the last Greek Festival at the Greek Orthodox Church here in Las Vegas). I love falafel and have eaten falafel for many years and have had it from a variety of places and this was the BEST I have ever had, sorry mom. If you leave this place hungry it is your fault. The garlic fries are the best I have ever had, the vegetable plate was amazing and the salad, WOW. Bottom line, if you are in this area and you do not stop here, you are missing out. We will NEVER pass through this area without stopping here again. Tehachapi is a very cool looking place and knowing Petra is here, We know we will ALWAYS have a great place to eat. read more

I definitely had much better, although it's in tehachapi, definitely need a better med restaurant. Driving out of town to Northridge for mediteranian is worth the drive instead! ... I've gone back to Petras a couple times since then; I take back what I say, their now peta bread shawerma gyro is #bombaf !! It's my newly favorite restaurant in town. Yum! Between the inlaws, hubby and the kid we ordered a lot of food and everybody tried almost everything. The highlight for me was the super fresh tabouleh - it was perfect. The veggies were crisp and wonderful, the parsley super fresh, with just the perfect amount of lemon juice to bring it all together. Hubby said the falafel was the best he'd ever had. It seemed wonderfully light compared to what I've had in the past. The tzazkiki had just the right amount of garlic. I enjoyed the beef/lamb shwaerma, but the inlaws thought it was a little over spiced. Their favorite was the chicken kabob (worth the 20-minute wait because they cook all the meat fresh here). My wife and I stayed at a friend's cabin in Hart Flat after Christmas, and she had been to Petra before, so we decided to stop by on the way home. She had a falafel in lavash, and I had the lamb & beef gyro in lavash. We also ordered garlic fries and the soup of the day, potato leek. I'll say that I'm not a aficionado of Mediterranean food, but what I look for is good hummus, tender, juicy, flavorful meat, and to walk away smelling like I bathed in a sauna of garlic. Mission accomplished. I've had some better meat at other Greek and Mediterranean restaurants I've visited, but this was good, served almost like a wrap or burrito. It held together really well, and was complemented quite well by the rich soup. I'm not sure of the extent of variety that Tehachapi has to offer, in terms of culinary diversity, but I definitely didn't expect to find a solid Mediterranean place, chilling downtown on an unassuming street corner. Wonderful little restaurant with outdoor seating in historic downtown Tehachapi. The food was amazing and fresh. So many healthy options. It's a mostly Mediterranean menu but it also has a few American and Italian food options. At first I was surprised by the prices but my goodness you get huge portions! The Garlic Fries were amazing.. had to try them after the rave reviews... they did not disappoint. But be forewarned.. these are for fresh garlic lovers only and not for the faint of heart.. they made my eyes water.. seriously... delish! I had the pesto chicken sandwich. While Petra offered a cool sanctuary from the hot summer sun, the food served within definitely could have used a little heat. I was disappointed by the lack of spice and seasoning on the chicken schwarma. It looked so tantalizing on the grill, but left me underwhelmed to say the least. I didn't realize such good Mediterranean food could be found in the mountains of Tehachapi! I'm thrilled! We ordered beef kabobs, chicken kabobs, and a veggie plate. The beef was AMAZING! I never thought a beef kabob could be so overwhelmingly delicious, but Petra's beef kabob was so yummy, perfectly cooked & seasoned... I'm addicted! The sides were plentiful, filling, and delicious. The veggie plate as a surprising STAR as well! It was ALL good, but I especially loved the dolmas and baba ghannouj. Very filling. We loved it! I ordered to-go, and when I picked up my bag of 3 entrees, it was HEAVY! WOW - we definitely got our money's worth, we had leftovers for the next day, and we were lovvvvvvvving the food! Yassss!!! Eat here! The food is fantastic! Obviously order the garlic fries! If you don't like garlic, well then, you're wrong... The salad/sandwich combo is usually my go-to. I really enjoy the chicken pesto sandwich, and my husband usually gets the Philly sandwich. This is a nice date spot! Sometimes it can take a little bit to get your order, but that's because they are making it right in front of you, worth the wait. We stopped here because of the rave reviews, I'm not sure how this place has such high ratings. Our gyros were so bad we went through a drive through after to buy a soda to get the taste out of our mouths. I've never had a gyro with a doughy pita bread, the seasoning tasted weird nothing Greek about it. I was expecting a great tzatziki sauce instead there was a weird pale yellow sauce.
