Trying to find a restaurant in the area that served vegan/gluten-free options for a large group was incredibly hard. When I called two weeks before our trip I spoke with the owner and he graciously offered to stay open later for us to have the dining room to ourselves. We were able to have everything served family style and it was great because we had minimal leftovers. I had emailed our order ahead of time which meant the dinner service ran very smoothly! I got so many compliments on the food. The baba ghanoush was very spicy and had so much garlic flavor it was one of my favorites! The chicken skewers also were grilled to perfection and with the added sauces had so much depth of flavor. Overall it was a very light and flavorful meal, the service was great, parking was easy, and the owner was incredible! I highly recommend coming. read more

Worst falafel ever...not even close to fresh pita bread, dry out and breaking...the salad was literally just lettuce, the tahini was a grotesque thick paste...the baba ganouch was bland and tasteless except for the OVERWHELMING amount of garlic that I can still taste 6 hours later...the $2.99 iced tea was a 10pz cup filled with ice and no refills...service was non-existent and as for Ambience, I have nice lunches in bus stations.., no one else was in the restaurant and I still waited too long for a stale, flavorless falafel sandwich.., this place needs to close, it is an insult to other hard working restaurateurs in Tehachapi... Picked up lunch here based on other reviews and I'm glad I gave it a try. I ordered the chicken shawarma wrap and baba ghanouj w/pita chips. Oh yeah, this is some tasty food! The shawarma is well seasoned, soo good, and the baba ghanouj is delicious. The pita chips were nice & crispy without falling apart all over the place. They have a nice, cozy patio area and a somewhat small interior dining area. The owners were polite and quick to put my order together in the midst of their lunch rush. Street parking is right out front, up & down the street. The only downside to my experience was that the lid on my takeout baba ghanouj was SO hard to get off that I actually broke a nail trying to get it open. So, if you're more adept at that sort of thing than I, you'll be fine. read more

Arrived to Tehachapi with an appetite and Petra's did *not* disappoint! Everything we ordered was full of flavor and our party of 6 left satiated and happy. COVID operating on take-out or outdoor eating - there are a few seating options outside the restaurant but we noticed a courtyard full of shaded picnic tables across the street by the movie theater too. I am not a baklava enthusiast by any means but the baklava here is DELICIOUS. Flaky, lightly sweet, crunchy and melt-in-your-mouth goodness. So, so delicious! Absolutely worth stopping by if you're in Tehachapi. We came just before the lunch hour began, and the line was shortly out the door! A really good sign. We walked in and Amr Diab was playing over the speakers; I immediately knew this place was legit. I ordered falafel and baklava. Both were truly fantastic. The falafel was hot and fresh, super crispy, the perfect bite with tahini! The baklava was out of this world. Can't recommend this delightful pastry enough. Absolutely packed with walnuts and honey. So good! My friends ordered the Greek salad and the dolma. I didn't have a chance to sample the salad, but the dolma and cardamom rice was truly fantastic. The sprinkling of sumac on top gave it that delicious flavorful bite. When we were leaving, we spotted a customer with a plate piled high with garlic fries and we've vowed to stop by on our next trip to Tehachapi. Highly recommend Petra! read more

We stopped for dinner on a road trip, again due to the food photos on yelp, and it did not disappoint! First of all, the town was idyllic! We parked right outside the establishment, and were greeted by the same man who took our order and made our food. We split an order of the garlic fries, which came out first, moments after we sat down. I ordered the chicken shish kebab pita, husband got the beef kefta kebab pita. They were both beautiful, tasty, and by this time I was too excited to eat them to manage a photo. Just when I couldn't eat anymore, husband ordered us baklava, which was so good I shoveled it down like it was my last meal. If we lived in state, we would absolutely be back for more. I decided to try this restaurant out during my recent stay in Tehachapi because of all the favorable Yelp reviews. Mediterranean is one of my favorite cuisines. I selected the chicken shawarma plate which goes for $14.99 (which is not cheap.) They offer counter service, so you order at the counter, pick out any seat you want, and then they bring your food to you when it is ready. Unfortunately, I have to admit that I was disappointed in the quality of the food here, as I have had much much better at other places. The food looked nice and the portions were large, but I found the chicken shawarma to be quite tasteless and all dried out. The hummus was very good and the cucumber and tomato salad that it comes with were just okay. In all fairness, this may be the best Tehachapi has to offer, but if you've been elsewhere I don't think you'll be impressed. read more

To start off the establishment itself was very well set up and has a nice vibe to eat in ! including the outdoor patio seating which is where my group sat at, and the staff had come out to bring us our food personally and even checked up on us to see if we were doing okay. Now for the food, there isn't much more to say other than it was amazing. I have eaten at a variety of Mediterranean restaurant (I'm from fresno) and this is by far my favorite. We tried the falafel plate along with the chicken shawarma and they were all amazing ! Oh and especially the baklava ! amazing ! Great place for Mediterranean food in town if you don't want to commute far to cities of Bakersfield or Lancaster/ Palmdale which offer even a greater variety of foods and Mediterranean cuisine. Prices on the plates are high compared to more city places as mentioned, so as a quick bite, I just got the chicken gyro and it had me stuffed. Extremely authentic, fresh and flavorful! This was a hidden treasure traveling home from Vegas, especially since your only options are past food joints. My house salad was perfecto! All veggies were extremely fresh, just picked products! The house lemon vinaigrette was a perfect balance. My only complaint was that the chicken was slightly dry. I personally am not a dolma fan, so asked BF for his rating - gave it 2 stars for being too soft. The hummus was good, albeit a little different than I prefer, maybe more lemony and lighter tasting, maybe less tahini but still good! I have only eaten here once so far but I plan to make it a regular stop on my trips to and through Tehachapi. We were coming back from Mammoth over the summer and as always when I travel, I check Yelp for good places to eat. I'm a vegetarian so places with options for me aren't always available, especially in smaller towns. Petra popped up and I decided we had to try them for lunch. If it was up to my husband, we would stop at McDonald's or Denny's or some other chain restaurant. I ordered the falafel wrap and he and my carnivorous daughter got chicken wraps. All three of us enjoyed the food very very much! I was a little worried about them because they aren't quite as adventurous when it comes to food as I am, but they liked what they had! It's been months but I still remember the taste. The falafel was delicious and crunchy, all the veggies were fresh and delicious and the tahini sauce was just perfect. I've tried to replicate it but can't. I travel to the desert and Arizona quite frequently so I go through Tehachapi pretty often. I have gotten into train photography this past year so I plan to be going to Tehachapi regularly. I will make sure to stop by Petra the next time I'm in town, which I hope will be soon! read more

Enormous portions and flavorful entrees highlight the menu at Petra. We covered a lot of ground between wraps, falafel, two Shawerma, and pizza. There was some sharing going on and everybody pretty much tried and likes every entree. Throw in some pita bread and hummus and the food seemed to go on forever. The pizza choices all looked good, and the one our party settled on was spinach, feta, tomato-basil, added chicken--excellent. The shawermas were both huge and very tasty, with the Med salad (cucumber, tomato, olive oil maybe) a nice cold addition. So much seasoned rice and also excellent with the special garlic sauce side. Wraps were also big and so filling with great flavor and not too dry, a nice cucumber sauce or complement as well. Overall a great long-time complement to the Tehachapi dining scene. read more
