I was headed into Carmel for an afternoon performance at the Forest Theater and turned around to go to Woody's at Del Mesa after missing the turn off via Carmel Valley Road. The restaurant is located inside a private condominium complex. Just roll up to the guard booth and let them know you are going to Woody's. They will give you a 4-hour parking pass. Spacious main dining room, bar area and outdoor patio. It has great atmosphere and decoration to match the season. I was seated in the main dining room with a view of the condominiums and the valley. I was promptly served water and asked if I would like a cocktail (it's like brunch). I ordered a Kir Royale for starters and followed up with a McIntyre Merlot to pair with my entree. I ordered Woody's Ranch Burger (bacon strips and all the trimmings) and a choice of fries (or salad). The burger was huge, and I was satisfied for the rest of the day. The lunch and dinner prices are similar. The service was great. The Del Mesa community is friendly. Also, I got to see an Open House on this visit as well. Darn, it is a 55 and older community.

We had heard good things about this restaurant and decided to try it out. My husband started with a glass of the Daou Cabernet Sauvignon and I had the Bernardus Sauvignon Blanc. My husband ordered the Steak Frites and I had the Salmon. Our dinners were excellent. We finished with a half baked chocolate chip cookie accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a dollop of whipped cream. It was so good!! Our server did a great job and was very attentive.

Omg what a delight! Personal disclosure, I wanted to go to this retirement community Del Mesa in Carmel for 30 years. It's a gated community up a very long hill, and when Woodys opened, I knew it was a place I had to see. The restaurant is very old world, upscale, elegant yet we felt very much at home. A sheer delight that the menu is the same as Woody's at the airport, which is phenomenal. I had the Cobb salad, which was enough for four people. Seriously my guest had their famous.BLAT bacon, lettuce, and tomato with a side salad. We also ordered onion rings because we have to order onion rings. They've got a great wine list. Natalie was our server she was super turns out she had come from the airport Woody's I actually found a typo on one of the menus for the wine, which Henry, the maître d' Natalie and myself had a good chuckle over, Chef Tim Ward delivered our meal. I was happy to congratulate him and I highly recommend going to Woody's. If if you've got a special occasion, I'll bet dinner there is something else and the prices are very reasonable We opted for the New York cheesecake, which was so rich the crust was like a cookie. It was so delicious. I also had a glass of the Chesbro Albarino. A huge thumbs up.

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warm hospitality and a cozy atmosphere. The highlight of our meal was undoubtedly the homemade bread--light, fluffy, and piping hot, it melted in our mouths and set the tone for the rest of the evening. We started with the calamari, which was especially impressive with its crispy coating--definitely not soggy! The roast beet salad was another standout; it offered generous chunks of fresh beets, perfectly balanced with savory flavors. The artichoke dip was unique, featuring ground artichoke instead of the usual chunks, making each bite rich and smooth. The French onion soup was a delight, loaded with gooey cheese in every spoonful--comfort food at its best. For the main course, the fish and chips stole the show! With three substantial pieces, the fish was flaky and incredibly fresh, proving it was far from the frozen variety you might find elsewhere. We also enjoyed happy hour drinks and food, enhancing our experience even more. The service was impeccable, making us feel well taken care of throughout the evening. As a bonus, we enjoyed an open mic night (a.k.a. karaoke), where talented local musicians entertained the crowd while others sang along. The lively atmosphere created a great crowd and added to the overall enjoyment of our visit. In summary, Shearwater Restaurant offers delicious food, excellent service, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. We can't wait to return for another unforgettable meal!

Nothing about the drink or dinner menu was too wild or stood out as unique. Considering there are many interesting dining establishments in the Carmel area, I felt like Shearwater Tavern upheld their standard in a foodie town by sourcing local ingredients and craft beers. The artichoke dip pays tribute to a local crop and was pretty tasty. The serving was generous, so we were grateful to our server for providing some extra sourdough for scooping up the last of the cheesy, warm dip. Oh, and Wednesday's are half off bottles of wine! The restaurant was situated away from the hotel common area to allow for a more intimate dining experience but still close enough to the lobby and rooms for convenience. There were some folks smoking in the parking lot, and the smoke smell was making its way into the dining room. A band was wrapping up for the night as we were being seated, and it seemed like there is regularly live music in the lounge area of the restaurant. The service was friendly, prompt, and food decent. As a guest in the hotel, it was easy to charge the meal to the room. Solid choice for an easy meal if staying at the hotel. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to dine at Shearwater Tavern though.

For lunch, I went with their Big Sur pizza on gluten free crust. The crust was impressive. Not my favorite I've ever had but still a really good job. The pizza was vegan with fried oyster mushrooms, baked white mushrooms, various veggies, and a red sauce with white sauce drizzle. Pizza was great. Really sold me on coming back the next day. As for brunch, they did not have the GF biscuits. The gravy was still vegan and they offered to serve it on GF focaccia bread. However, at $22, I couldn't do it. Besides, I would at least need to add a couple eggs for some protein and I wasn't about to spend all of that on brunch. So instead, I went with huevos rancheros. This was excellent. The poblano sauce was spicy and hearty, the tortillas nice and crisp, and the pinto beans an interesting change of pace. The potatoes were awesome. Place is plain and pretty basic. The outside seating is in the sun and facing a blacktop parking lot, so you don't come here for the ambiance. But the food and service were excellent. Great vegan meals.

We started with the Caprese salad, which was the perfect size for sharing between two people. To drink, I ordered a glass of Merlot while my partner enjoyed a sangria. The pours were generous and definitely appreciated! For our entrées, we ordered the shrimp Thai curry and the Gyro platter, both of which were flavorful, well-prepared, and satisfying. I debated a few dishes until the server let me know that the owner is from Thailand and this was her own recipe. It was amazing! The service was also exceptional throughout the entire course of the meal. Going back to the wine pours...we closed our tab but because of the holiday pour we stayed for another round of drinks for dessert! The first thing they brought out was bread with olive oil and balsamic vinaigrette and, no joke, that ended up being my favorite bite of the meal. I was still thinking about the bread while eating everything else, which probably says more than I intended. The clam chowder was good and comforting, but if you've had chowder in Monterey, you know the bar is pretty high. The calamari was the bigger disappointment. It was chewy instead of tender and didn't have that light, crispy crunch that makes calamari worth ordering in the first place. By the time we finished the chowder and calamari we were full, but we still looked through the menu to see if anything tempted us. Honestly, nothing really stood out. The pasta prices felt steep, and there wasn't a dish that made us say, "Okay, we have to come back and try that." The only thing that really took away from the experience was how close the tables were. I could hear the people next to us whispering and accidentally became invested in a conversation I was never invited to. Overall, it's a cute place with great service and a nice ambiance that's worth checking out if you're visiting Carmel. I don't regret going, but I also don't see myself going back. On the bright side, at least the bread gave me something to remember. Someone in that kitchen deserves a raise for that basket alone.
