The Ricotta & Honey pizza was so good, and the Bee Stang was another one of my favorite. The Spicy Pig was a bit too salty for our taste, the saltiness overpowered the toppings so it made it hard to fully enjoy the flavors. I like that you can choose between Neapolitan and Detroit-style pizza. Both were delicious, so I'd recommend getting one of each style to try. The ambiance is warm and cozy with a modern rustic vibe. There's both indoor seating and a nice outdoor patio. The service was okay. My only complaint is that I wish there were more than one restroom, especially during busy hours. For whatever reason I was craving pizza big time on this particular night, but not a slice, quality pizza from a restaurant. I did a search and Bear and the Wren came up. I was only in San Luis Obispo for one night, it was my first time visiting I was doing a road trip up the coast and the goal of my trip was to see beautiful beaches, eat amazing food and try the coolest local coffee shops. I walked to this restaurant from my hotel and wanted to grab a seat at the bar. It was 9:20 on the dot when I walked in, was happy to see they were open until 10. Now I worked in restaurants, both casual and fine dining for years. I know you don't stroll into a restaurant at 9:45, 9:50 when they close at 10. Have I had customers do it? Of course, but I don't do it. I also knew exactly what I wanted to order because I looked up the menu in advance. I don't drink, I definitely would have been in and out before other tables had finished. Plus when I walked in, it was a semi-full restaurant. This was a Saturday night by the way. I walked in and said hey I was just going to sit at the bar and grab pizza your kitchen is still open right? The hostess got uncomfortable and said, "Yeah we are closing now, sorry." I said, "Oh really that's a bummer I just wanted some pizza." Hoping she would say yeah of course we are still open for another FORTY minutes. But she didn't. I asked if she had any recommendations for late night food and she gave me the name of a pizza dive that you would pick up drunk slices from. What a bummer. Ordered this for takeout so it wasn't as crispy and hot as we imagined it would be fresh but still delicious to enjoy. It is a bit pricey for what you get. Parking is pretty bad especially during peak hours so expect to circle around multiple times or find street parking elsewhere. We ordered: -Bee Stang, Detroit style (5/5): Despite the name the honey wasn't too pronounced - it was mainly the spice. This is a pretty garlicky pizza and the ricotta texture and taste was on point. The thick and crispy crust of the style was also a standout for us. This was my favorite of the 2. - Sausage and Pepperoni Pizza, Neapolitan style (4/5): My bf's favorite pizza of the 2. Love the thin crust and flavor which was distinctly meaty with tomato sauce to cut through. It could have used more toppings for the price and it was also slightly burnt on the edges of some of the crust so we couldn't enjoy it fully. Also the slices weren't evenly cut through but luckily it was easy to split it apart. Overall very enjoyable meal and a nice date night vibe inside. We come to SLO 1-2 times a year and always love visiting. This place was recommended by a friend, so we were excited to try it, but unfortunately the experience was disappointing. The wait to be seated was long, which we understood. Once we sat down, our server brought us water and said she would be back. About 10 minutes later, she returned with water for our toddler and said she would come back again to explain the menu. While waiting, my husband and I were looking through Yelp photos to get a better idea of what we wanted. When she came back, I asked about a pizza I had seen from a few years ago. She seemed annoyed by the question and said something along the lines of, "It seems like you're not ready, so I'll be back in five minutes." I told her we were ready and had my husband order. He asked one clarifying question about the Detroit-style pizza, and again, she seemed visibly irritated. The food itself was okay, but the service really affected the experience. She checked on us only once during the meal. When we were finished, she was standing at the hostess stand and, rather than coming over to check on us, gestured from across the restaurant to ask if we wanted the check. We're pretty understanding when restaurants are busy, but the interactions made us feel like we were an inconvenience for asking normal questions about the menu. For a place that came highly recommended, the overall experience was unfortunately very disappointing. read more

I liked Bear & the Wren, and you should definitely make a reservation instead of walking in like I did. The walk-in experience deserves a 3/5 stars but I've upgraded it to a 4 because the food was good and it could've been avoidable with a little bit of planning. My group arrived at 6:40ish and I was quoted 1-1.5 hours (I got the text at 6:45). Their system is linked to Open Table, and when I looked at the link, it said 8:30. We checked back around 8pm and the lady at the front said it would be another half hour, which tells me that they should've quoted me 8:30 to begin with! But then she said that they had a table in their patio with heat warmers available now - which we were fine with. But this leads me to question: if the back patio is not considered part of the regular seating, why on earth would you not mention it at the start?? Open Table absolutely has the capability of differentiating between inside and outside tables and it feels like Bear & the Wren did not use the option to keep track of the two types of seating. That being said, the food was very good, and the heaters served well for this cold night. Although it was December, they were still using the Autumn menu. Our group of 3 shared a Caesar salad, the Brussels sprouts and the cacio e pepe pizza, Neapolitan-style. Caesar salad was excellent (we were tempted in ordering another one) - croutons were perfectly crispy without being too hard. Brussels sprouts were also good with the maple providing sweetness, although I prefer them crispier. Cacio e Pepe was delicious - although my sister, who is very sensitive to spiciness, thought it was spicy (because of the amount of black pepper). Personally, I thought it was perfect, although I could've done with a dip for the crust. I enjoyed the Kalimotxo spritzer. Overall, a very solid restaurant with adequate planning with reservations. read more

Helpful staff guided us with their patron favs. Started with: 1) meatballs: flavorful & tender (probably added panade). Marinara nicely balanced. Pistachio pesto added a nice nutty accent. Great dish. 2) mixed berry salad: spring salad greens with plump fresh berries. Pinkish berry vinaigrette was nice. Tasted similar to a 1,000 isle type dressing. 3) three pea pizza: buddy doesn't like goat cheese so ordered it on the side. Crust was great, veggies fresh & colorful. It really needs the goat cheese though. Otherwise it lacks dimension. I was able to sprinkle on my pieces. Made a world of difference. 4) bee stang: crust had crisp edges. Middle got a bit soggy from toppings. My NYC buddy loved the ability to fold it in half though. Great overall flavor. The hot honey added just the right amount of tang/tart. Tried this restaurant as a recommendation from a friend. Absolutely delicious! We ordered the bee stang Detroit style pizza, Cesar salad, short rib, mac n cheese, and cookie skillet. The only item we did not care for was the mac n cheese. It was only slightly room temp and felt more like a frozen mac n cheese. However, every other item was a hit and we devoured them. We spent the evening in SLO as a halfway stop on our way to a show in LA and chose Bear & The Wren for dinner based on Yelp reviews. Everything was just ok. We were told there was a wait for tables, which was fine, but there were seats at the bar we were not offered until we asked about them. After that our order came out relatively soon and the salad was fresh and good, which was nice. Our elote pizza was tasty enough but just kind of lukewarm. I had a glass of wine that was fine. The symphony of amazingness of the Ricotta, butter, scallions and salt makes your taste buds sing. I have on more than one occasion ordered this and a salad for dinner and there is plenty to share unless you are a ricotta lover like myself. We found this place by aroma while walking around old town SLO, and decided to try it because it smelled so good. It was busy but we only had to wait a few minutes for a table even though we didn't have a reservation. We're so glad we did. The food was amazing, the service was great, and the ambiance was nice. We tried their Cesar salad, Neopolitan margarita pizza and the pepperoni and sausage Detroit style pizza. Everything was delicious, and the Neopolitan pizza was very authentically Italian. And, to make the experience even better and a little unique, everyone got a tiny bag of gummy bears when the check was delivered. What a way to start our trip in Central California. Three words, Street Taco Pizza!!! And the gluten free crust was the best! I wasn't so sure the Street Taco pizza would replicate that delicious taco taste but it did that we ordered another one! Then a couple of plates with cloth napkin wrapped flatware, nice. She told us that this was the first night of the new fall menu... All right then, the menu covered the basics all with the Chef's flair or twist. caesar salad no croutons please, dressing was excellent. roasted veggies, some good sized red beets and other root veggies, perfect Then the Neapolitan Butternut squash pizza arrived and that was good. Had reservations to go here celebrating a birthday and this place did not disappoint! Probably not the only pizza place in town, but they seem to be more on the unique side. There's a host of appetizers and side dishes to pair with the main attraction, pizza! They have Neapolitan and Detroit style pizza here. Some standout items to me were the Mac and cheese appetizer was a compressed block/stick of Mac and cheese, gave it a bit of uniqueness. My kid enjoyed it still despite not being the usual presentation. For the pizza, we enjoyed the 3 peas and the mushroom one, can't recall the exact names. Both were flavorful and had good amount of toppings. Parking can be a little difficult to find, mostly street parking with meter. Though if you are here at dinner time and some nearby businesses with parking lots have closed, it seems like everyone just parks in those lots which is a short walk away. The restaurant seems to be situated in an area with other places too so likely have some competition for parking spaces. The place itself has a rustic like charm to it and is simple yet modern looking. We sat outside where they had some warmers on but it wasn't too cold that evening. I had high hopes for bear & the wren. After a long hot day we decided to stay in at our hotel and order some pizza. My husband went to pick it up and said the staff were really rude and not helpful when he walked in to pick up our order. When he arrived I was floored with the size of the pizza. For what we spent on one pizza I expected the sizing to be significantly bigger. Pizza was dry and did not have enough sauce. Our hotel was 5 min up the road so it wasn't the drive time.
