We've been a Petro customer for decades. They provide oil and service for a home backup heating system. Generally, we've been satisfied with their work and products, yet we've been allowed to run out of oil unknowingly during cold weather as was just experienced this month (February 2026) which left us without heat. at its lowest, our home registered 44 degrees F! We watch the tank fuel level, but the app indicated we had 12% fuel remaining when the tank was empty. Yikes! Thus 3 stars for Petro - the organization and system. Good News: Dee Dee from Petro in Baltimore County showed up within 24 hours of our call for emergency service. She checked the entire system, dropped 20 gallons of fuel, restarted the furnace and waited until heat was reliably being produced. She was thorough, professional, and tidy. Amazing technician that represented the company well. She deserves 5 stars! So, we've learned to watch the tank gauge more carefully and ask for DeeDee if/when we ever need service again. read more

I am writing with a second formal complaint regarding Petro's service at my home and to demand immediate action to resolve the serious issues caused by your technician's work. On or about [date], my home ran out of heating oil and I was left with no heat. I contacted Petro and was informed that my tank was empty. Petro dispatched a technician to address the no‑heat condition. Your technician stated that he would put approximately 10 gallons of diesel fuel into my system "until my delivery arrived" and then proceeded to run the system. As a direct result of this action, soot was blown through my vents and into my living space. My walls, ceilings, and other surfaces are now covered in soot. I have never used diesel fuel in my tank before and relied entirely on Petro's professional judgment as my fuel provider and service company. Since this incident: My home has visible soot on walls, ceilings, and surfaces. My vents and air ducts have been contaminated and require professional cleaning. Members of my household have begun experiencing symptoms (such as [headaches / coughing / breathing irritation - describe briefly and truthfully]) that started after the soot and fuel exposure. A technician came out on [date] to "assess the problem," but as of today I have not received a clear written explanation or a concrete plan to fully remediate the damage. Because the contamination and damage arose from the actions of Petro's technician while servicing my system, I expect Petro and/or its insurer to take responsibility and promptly cover all reasonable costs to restore my home and protect my health. Specifically, I am demanding that Petro: Pay for a professional cleaning company to thoroughly clean all affected walls, ceilings, and surfaces to remove soot. Pay for professional HVAC and air‑duct cleaning, including cleaning and inspection of the furnace/boiler, flue, and heat exchanger to ensure safe operation. Pay for repair or replacement of any equipment or personal property damaged by soot or by the misuse of diesel fuel. Reimburse any reasonable costs for temporary lodging and alternative heat if a qualified contractor or medical professional determines that my home is unsafe to occupy during remediation. Reimburse the reasonable costs of medical evaluation related to symptoms from this exposure, to the extent covered by your liability insurance. I am in the process of obtaining written estimates from professional cleaning and HVAC companies and will provide copies, along with photos and any medical documentation, upon request. Please confirm the correct mailing or email address for submitting this documentation and the name and contact information of the person handling my claim. This is my second complaint about this matter. The lack of heat and the soot contamination have significantly affected my use and enjoyment of my home and my health. I am asking that Petro open a formal claim, assign it to a specific representative, and provide a written response within 10 business days of receiving this letter, confirming: The claim number and assigned contact person. Whether Petro accepts responsibility for the damage and contamination. The steps you will take, and the timeline, to fully remediate my home and address the costs listed above. If I do not receive a satisfactory written response within 10 business days, I will have no choice but to pursue further remedies, including complaints to state consumer protection authorities, a claim with my homeowners insurance, and consultation with legal counsel regarding recovery of all damages. I like, David N. (review on Jan 31,2026) , am beyond disappointed with Petro Home Services. I wish I had paid attention to the MANY ONE STAR reviews they had gotten before signing on. My mistake!! Don't make my mistake. As the adage says, "Where there is smoke there is fire". The smoke is the ONE STAR reviews The fire being ALL the varied PROBLEMS. One note: the technician was nice and said since he wasn't really needed, there would be no charge. The situation: I had a gas leak in my grill line from a squirrel chewing through it. I called Petro and they told me to call the fire dept and that Petro would send a technician. Well, the fireman found the chewed through line and we turned off the gas at the cut off I had had installed between the tank and the grill. They told me problem solved. I called Petro and advise them the problem was rectified and not to send a technician. They insisted they HAD to send someone - I went back and forth with a very unreasonable office person and then with the manager. It seems you lose your rights as a property owner with these people! So the technician that was sent was reasonable and had common sense (probably doesn't work for them with qualities like that!). He didn't want to be paid for doing nothing needed and told me there would be no charge. However, one month later I find a charge on my account - for a "service" call. I explained the situation to the Billing Dept and was directed to custom service. Customer Service was HORRIBLE. Nope, I was to pay up and was promptly put in my place. Kind of like, the customer is always right, but the total reverse. After back and forth, the office person. became rude and discourteous. I was to pay up or else! This seems to be a pattern of theirs (see Gena C review, Feb 17,2025) who eloquently said "Beware of Petro, they will rip you off!" My story doesn't sound like much, but added together with all the other ONE STAR REVIEWS, it is reason to look for another propane company. Don't use this company. Petro sent a technician to my home for a diagnostic. The technician said I should replace my tank as soon as possible since it was rusted. He recommended I use my first delivery and replace it after that. We initiated tank replacement. Petro continued filling the tank despite the recommendation of the staff and charged me. Every time I called, no one seemed to know about the tank replacement. Now I have oil I'm not going to use, will have to pay to dispose of and pay Petro for. If I could give a zero or negative number I would. DON'T SIGN UP WITH THEIR CONTRACTS. I have been a loyal customer of Carroll Oil for yrs. Then they sold to Petro. The worst thing that could happen. To sum up my experience without getting into too much detail, because I don't have the time. I signed up for the oil ceiling plan. Received a call from Petro, I'm due for a delivery and to call them. Called, the rep said I'm scheduled for Mon or Tue unsure which but no later than Tue. I called Tue and they told me I will get oil on Friday. NO courtesy call at all. I'm a senior and sick. I was told that they will try to get it moved up. No call. I called back Tue. Rep confirmed Fri. delivery. So now I have to wait because I'm locked in this contract and can't order from anyone else without a penalty. Then I called today to confirm the Friday delivery and the rep. told me, it will be Saturday. Again, no courtesy call from them. And TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. The rep had me on hold for a while. Worst company ever. Have had 8 technicians out since last year because our heat keeps going out at my 86 year old father's house. The tech that came out yesterday was the first tech that came out last year. He said they never replaced the part he put in for. Now here it is, a snow storm, freezing out and can't keep the heat on. I feel a lawsuit coming on. Waiting once again for the manager to call back. My dad has been a customer since 1970 but we will not be renewing our contract. Update: 17 hours ago I made the emergency call to Petro about my 86 year old father not having heat. Was told it was being expedited to the manager and guess what? Greetings,       I'd like to bring to your attention something that I think is an example of unsatisfactory (poor) service on the part of the technician that arrived to handle my service request on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. I request service because I had noticed that the low water cut-off on my furnace wasn't working. The low water cut-off is a safety control device that shuts off the furnace if the water in the unit falls below a certain level to prevent the unit from overheating. The furnace is an oil-fired steam boiler for steam radiators. The furnace was installed replacing the previous furnace in 1977. When the Technician arrived, I explained the problem with the low water cut-off to him and also mentioned to him that the float might be stuck because the blow down spring valve handle had been sheared of a few years ago, also, it seems like I have to add water to the furnace a lot more frequently than I used to. The tech then looked over the furnace and said that because the information was worn off of the furnaces data plate, he couldn't read the make and model number also he said if he could, he would not be able to get a replacement cut-off for the furnace because it was so old. I said to him that the data plate is on the low water cut off and I think he should be able to order a replacement part from that. I told him it was a McDonnell & Miller No. 67 Low Water Cut-Off rated up to 20 psi; I further suggested that he see if he could just replace the blow down valve to see if that would allow the unit to function again. He began to blow smoke about needing the model number for the furnace because of pressure settings and indicating that the part needed was obsolete and not available and that the furnace needed to be replaced. I told him that I'll get another plumber to check on the problem before I think about buying a new furnace because it seems like it's just a peripheral unit failure. He said that's a good idea and left. I'd like to mention here that the tech was never rude or discourteous, we were cordial with each other the entire time, I don't question his skill or experience, but he seemed to be dismissive of what I was trying to explain to him or anxious not to really check to see if he could solve my problem. That's the impression he left me with, but I leave room to be mistaken.        Anyhow, that same evening I did a little research and found that the McDonnell & Miller No. 67 low Water Cut-Off is a very common item used on old & not so old boilers. and that it is readily available at quite a lot of part suppliers & other sources. new, used, and refurbished, and so is just the blow-down valve. I ordered a refurbished unit (at a really good price). On Saturday, January 10,2026 I removed the blow down valve from it and installed it on the unit on my furnace and after a lot of flushing to get the goo out I could hear the float functioning. I installed some new piping on the unit to channel water into a bucket. It worked just like it used to, actually better. I then investigated and found that two of my seven radiators were leaking at the steam valve connections, so I reseated them with some fresh sealant. Then, I found that two of my radiator air vent valves were not closing and continuously releasing steam. I replaced all the radiator air valves; these two problems were why I had to add water to the furnace so often. Remember I mentioned to the tech that I had to add water more frequently; I guess it didn't ring a bell. My heating system and furnace seem to be working just fine now.      I can't speak to the tech's skill or experience, but I felt that he was impatient or wanted a quick and easy job. I had asked other techs about replacing the low water cut off or blow down valve when they did annual tune ups, they said I needed to make another service call for it, and I couldn't keep it on my mind. I'm 64 and twice retired and I'm fairly familiar with boilers from some work experience but I like to rely on professionals for somethings (like my family's safety). I've dealt with Petro as our oil delivery company for nearly three years, and I would strongly recommend choosing any other company. Every single winter, without fail, they cancel scheduled deliveries without notice, resulting in us arriving to a building with no heat--sometimes multiple times in one season. What makes this even worse is that we've repeatedly asked them to simply notify us if a delivery needs to be canceled. They don't. Instead, when we call to find out why there's no oil, we're hit with extra charges and priority fees just to get the heat back on. This isn't a one-time issue--it's a pattern. The lack of communication, accountability, and basic customer care is unacceptable, especially for a service people rely on during winter months. Petro seems far more concerned with fees and profit than with their customers' well-being. After years of dealing with this, it's clear this company does not value reliability or respect. Part II to my review of Petro Service performed initially on May 30th. While a Tech came back eventually and properly routed the fuel line that the previous Tech had improperly moved from it's original location - it gets worse!! Yesterday I received a bill for $246.00 for installation of the fuel filter. My wife or I DID NOT Authorize, Approve, or Even Know about a filter installation UNTIL AFTER IT WAS INSTALLED, and installed INCORRECTLY. Legally, a person does not have to pay for a product or service that they did not request, approve, or were not aware of prior to the fact. I called Petro, and of course, was told someone would get back to me. I advised them of my lack of confidence in that based upon my previous attempts to address issues with this company. It will take some fast talking on the part of the Petro representative to convince me to pay for a service done totally by their Technician PRIOR to informing us that this task/installation was necessary. In Fact, I believe the only reason they responded at all to numerous attempts of contact is ONLY because I posted on YELP! This adds a new appreciation of YELP to my thought processes. I've been using Petro for my home heating oil deliveries and they do that well (although more expensive than others). I also signed a service contract with them to help maintain my HVAC system. Recently, I needed to find someone to reroute an A/C coolant line and reached out to Petro. They sent a tech to evaluate and he said someone would reach back out with a quote. After 2 weeks of nothing (but I made 2 attempts to contact them), they finally responded with "we don't do that". What a ridiculous response after 2 weeks. Horrible!!! I have leased 2 propane tanks from Petro for my heat pumps secondary heat when the weather gets too cold for many years now. In the beginning I could call the local Rosedale location directly off of Pulaski Highway to request service and refills with no issues. Then everything changed. No longer could you simply call the local office, you had to call the dreaded 1-800 number to whoever. I was told Petro was bought out, same as Carrol Fuel by a large corporation. Timely delivers became an issue using on the automatic refill program, they either didn't show-up or showed up repeatedly when my tanks were nearly full without notice. I did discover a simple work-around by getting off the auto-refill program and by just calling Petro very early for refills after I checked the fuel gages on the tanks. But that's not what pushed be over the cliff to start my hunt for a new propane supplier. This morning, I was scheduled for service to inspect the gas regulator that froze-up before Christmas and a possible faulty gage in one of the tanks. The issues were discovered on December 15th by another contractor who performs service on my heat-pump and back up gas furnace. I've only had to call Petro for service twice during all those years and each time the experience was horrible. The first time after scheduling service and experiencing a no show during my appointed 4-hour window, I just paid someone else to correct the problem and moved on hoping, unrealistically as the thought was, I would never have to deal with the service department again. Yesterday was the 2nd time I had to call for service and mainly due to the issues being with Petro's equipment that I lease. I called the 1-800 Petro number and spoke to representative but since it was after hours she said they would return my call as soon as possible to schedule service, only after I agreed to pay a $99 service charge for them to inspect Petro's own equipment! I had a working heat pump and at the time a working back-up gas furnace, so I wasn't stressed. Guess what happened, no call back, hard to believe, huh. I called a 2nd time on January 6th, 2026, after the holidays, and spoke to a representative that scheduled a service call for the very next day, believe it or not, between 8am and 12 noon. I took off work, cancelled appointments and proceeded to wait and wait, and wait until after 12pm. I called the dreaded 1-800 number once again and after being on hold, the Petro representative informed me that the appointment was cancelled yesterday by the propane department! I received no email, no phone call, no text to let me know the propane department which I can only guess is not affiliated with Petro's 1-800 customer service number. It's funny, I never thought or anticipated that a customer had to navigate the internal departments within Petro to insure they were actually scheduling with the appropriate department. I wrongfully thought the 1-800 customer service number would surely cover all departments within Petro but apparently not. The Rep said I would receive a call back from the propane department to schedule another appointment. I expressed my frustration and said I have no confidence that the elusive propane department would call me back, or if they did, manage to set an appointment that they would actually show up for this time. How else could I pay $99 for them to work on Petro own equipment that I lease already from them. I guess we just navigate the home heating companies just like we are forced to do with cable tv, cell phone carrier companies and streaming services, we just jump back in forth from one service provider to another when the loyal long-time customer reaches their breaking point. What a wonderful thing it would be to experience customer service in actual practice instead of it being just a marketing ploy. Like the smell of a new car, new customer smells great until the smell wears off. PS. While typing this review, I received 2 calls from Petro. The first wanting to know if the Propane Department called me to which simply said no. She said she would follow-up. The 2nd call was from the delivery department wanting to know if I want a delivery. I replied why would I refill tanks that may leak or need to be pumped down if replacement is needed. I briefly went over today's events, and she said that she was going to contact Petro's loyalty department! LOL. Maybe if Petro had less departments and more employee engagement directly with the customer at a local level thing would get done instead of kicking the can down the road so that another recently created useless department can claim they help the customer. How about eliminating all the useless departments with names no one cares about and hiring more skilled techs and local customer service people that we can walk into a facility and speak to directly to resolve issues. read more

We've been loyal customers of Petro (and its previous iterations) since 2006, but this recent experience has been incredibly disappointing. A technician came out last Saturday and diagnosed the issue with our AC--a broken furnace fan that needed to be replaced. That was a 7 days ago. Since then, there's been no repair and no clear timeline for when the part will arrive or when the work will be done. Meanwhile, temperatures have been in the high 80s and are expected to reach 98 degrees soon. Leaving a family without AC during a heatwave is not just poor service--it's inhumane. There's been no urgency, no updates, and no temporary solution offered. After nearly 20 years as a customer, we expected better. Gentlemen, I would like to add a very positive note about the service that I received from Ricardo Leslie, tech number 173. He was prompt, courteous, and professional. He was very thorough in his diagnosis of the furnace's problem. In addition to that, he properly fixed a "quick fix" from a previous tech, although this took him considerably more time than was allocate. Petro is unreliable. I pay monthly for consistent deliveries and they left me literally in the freezing cold. I got an email 10 days ago saying I would get a deliver "this week" and that was untrue. My tank is empty and the heat is off. I called this morning and was told that the earliest I could get a delivery would be 9pm tonight. Really! After 5 years of paying their bill the day the propane was delivered, they filled generator tanks (a secondary account with them) and the bill blew off the door or wasn't left. They never called. Never texted. Never emailed. We o oh found out that they had cancelled our accounts with them. We called to get more propane when it ran out and they wanted to charge us $150 to have a tech come out and assess the situation and that would take several days. Ridiculous. Don't use Petro. Their billing and service plan is not up to par with Carroll Home Services. I was with Carroll and it was sold to Petro in February. I had a service contract on my AC, furnace and water heater which was 24/7. Petro's plan is 8-5, M-F. During the winter, there was a dusting of snow on my driveway. I called to have an oil delivery because Petro forgot my delivery. The driver was afraid to come down the driveway to deliver my oil after I had just gone out. He called from the truck and wanted to reschedule because there was too much snow on the driveway. I told him, "NO"! Seriously? I had work done by Petro and paid the bill the day after the work was done. Petro applied the money to the wrong account. I kept receiving weekly dunning notice calls. It took me 4 phone calls and 2 months to get them to finally fix their mistake. I called again after they fixed their mistake to inquire about a $50 past due balance. I am on the budget plan for utilities so I pay the same amount every month. They couldn't tell me what past due balance was. I went online and couldn't figure it out. read more

Second time this season, my 85 yr old mother is left alone in a freezing house with no oil because Petro is incompetent, and plain just does not give a F$%^K about their customers. My mother has been a loyal customer for 60 years and this is the 1st season she has ever run out of fuel, and it happened twice this season. Company hadn't showed up for our delivery service even though they emailed us telling us they'd be out within a week. Two weeks later still nothing. I call, for an emergency fill up. As we have freezing temperatures and my oil tank is reading empty they tell me they'd request for an emergency next day service. Call the next day. They say we can't confirm when your delivery pick up will be yet. But by Wednesday. That's another 6 days while my tank is reading empty and I have an infant in the house. I have been a customer with Petro since they were Carroll Independent since 2009...don't know what happened but their service has gone straight into the toilet...I pay a contract with them to automatically fill my oil tank and to service my boiler (AND I have a $440.00 credit with them!!!!!)...this is the second time in as many days I have had no heat because Petro says I have oil but my boiler says it does NOT...last night (3/2/25) a technician came out, supposedly put 10 gallons into my tank, told me that would last a couple days...WRONG...today (3/3/25) no heat again...below 60 in my house right now and they can't get anyone out here till after 6pm and the delivery driver doesn't know how to bleed the line...well now, ain't that just peachy...my COMBAT WOUNDED husband just got out of the hospital two days ago and this is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE!!! if anyone has suggestions for a better oil company, I am actively looking...someone from "management" was supposed to call us today...Petro has dropped the ball once again and I will not deal with shoddy service...if I could select a rating less that one star, I would!!! read more

Having been a customer since 1987, in addition to heating oil, I have purchased 3-Oil-Fired Hot Water Tanks; at least 1 New Oil-Fired Furnace; An Above-Ground Oil Tank; 2 New-Air Conditioning Units; and a New Generator. The Generator went on the 'fritz' at the crack of dawn 2-days ago; as well as losing our Heat & Hot Water at the same time-- we're experiencing a major COLD-SNAP and 10+ steadily increasing desperate phone calls finally resulted in the appearance of PETRO's technician at 8PM last evening (the same technician, incidentally, who was involved last summer during a 2-week HEAT WAVE, when our air conditioning unit stopped working. So much for PETRO's claims of "Fast & Reliable Service.") Better yet, our PETRO Technician determined our Oil Tank was BONE-DRY. He restored our Heat, but we are still without HOT WATER. read more

Excellent service! Great explanation of terms by agent answering phone. There were no surprises with charges and I really appreciate that. Bill from Petro came out and found carbide igniter for gas furnace was broken. Fixed it same day. Professional and pleasant. Very pleased. Cold weather ahead now we will be warm. Petro has acquired Carroll Fuel and together both companies are terrible. They price gouge, do not fix their oil delivery errors and pass the bill directly to their customers! Do not use Carroll Fuel or Petro or any other subsidiary or affiliate. You will regret it and they will take advantage of you as a customer. read more
