I would caution anyone NOT to board their cats at the PetSmart PetsHotel on Richmond Highway in Alexandria.The information on their website is patently false; they don't do any of the things that they claim they do. We had such a horrible experience and feel a tremendous amount of guilt for trusting that they would take care of our cat. After a short stay, our healthy 1-year old cat was returned to us lethargic and clearly traumatized, with serious episodes of vomiting and diarrhea that ended up in a $2,500 vet hospital stay. A quick business trip turned into an ungodly expense. We were promised an update during his stay as well as a "Pawgresss Report" when we picked him up, but received neither, likely because he wasn't adjusting well and it was easier for them to keep that from us. They didn't even do a basic medical check when we dropped him off, which again was supposed to happen according to their website. I reached out to the hotel manager, Arden, once he was admitted to the vet hospital two days after his stay, and described our experience. She "seemed" very sympathetic and assured me that an incident report would be filed and that someone would get back to me ASAP. Well, here it is 4 days later and I still haven't heard from anyone; I would have thought that they would want, at the very least, an update on his diagnosis/condition to prevent an outbreak at their facility. Nope. Clearly, what they say and what they actually do are at odds. Don't be like me and get caught up in the flowery language used on their website to describe their facility and services; it's all disingenuous, if not patently false. I've taken my dog Bucky to this PetSmart for day camp and overnight stays many times, and I've never had an issue. Bucky has high anxiety and can be very nervous around new people, but the staff here are always gentle, patient, and reassuring. They take their time with him and make sure he feels safe and comfortable. Anytime I call to check on him, they give me a clear update and let me know how he is doing. Now, Bucky runs right to the staff every time we drop him off. There is a worker who reads to the dogs and another who always greets Bucky with excitement. Their kindness has made a huge difference for him. I recommend this PetSmart to everyone I know because they have truly helped my dog with his socialization. I waited a while to write a review, but after more than 15 visits the experience has been amazing. When I come to pick him up, he acts like he does not even want to leave. I have been using this Petsmart location periodically over the last 7 years and today my first day bringing my dog back after about 5 years due to the lack of customer service I had previously experienced in their Grooming department. And even with new staffing in this department I still cannot seem to get that warm feeling that my animal is in good hands. Firstly, Michael my groomer for today did not even greet me upon arrival. He was free when we arrived and did not even carry my dog, let alone acknowledge her in my presence. Definitely not a warm feeling leaving my dog in his hands. Secondly, I was told a two hour window which I set my timer for two hours before I even left the building. Once I returned with 28 minutes still remaining on my timer, I shopped the store to pick up a few items before picking my dog up from her appointment. Once I went to pick her up, I was told my dog was not ready but not from Michael but another groomer which I found odd because Michael is literally standing right in front of me and for some reason never no eye contact nor acknowledge me as a customer. At that point I asked to speak to a manager because this gentleman was not giving me confidence that he cared about my dog nor giving his customers the best customer service. The groomer called and said my dog was finished but when I arrived he was still wet without receiving a proper blow out, the paws were not even touched/trimmed, and he did not receive a sanitary trim. When I dropped my dog off for a bath & brush, I was called back being told that my dog was ready 17 minutes after I dropped him off which I found out to be a reasonable time frame to thoroughly groom him. When I came to get him, my suspicions were correct unfortunately. He had eye boogers left on both eyes and his ears weren't completely dried which was worrisome because my dog is prone to ear infections if not thoroughly dried. I had been a recurrent customer in the past for the sake of having his grooming done conveniently located to where I live but today was the final straw for me. I understand people want to get off from work on time but you still have to do your job correctly and not inconvenience your customers plans to do so. Unfortunately, I agree with many of the negative reviews. I recently took my 13-year-old Yorkie to their groomer for a haircut and she's been a different dog ever since. She used to get excited when I put on her harness because she knew we'd be taking a walk. Now, when I put on her harness, she yelps every time! I believe it's because of how the groomer handled her when she was in the grooming harness. The groomer wasn't kind to me and didn't seem to want to be at work. The groomer was a petite, white woman with an accent. The other groomers may be wonderful, but she definitely was not the best choice for my elderly dog. read more

I would like to start by saying the selection is great, and I love the way that they actually take care of their animals. However, when I went in to buy cat supplies, I picked up some litter to examine it and it is clear and animal had peed on it, it was clear and Animal had marked it. I don't know how anybody could've missed that smell-like a cat had marked it with pee and got all over me even though I only picked up two things from that store. I smelled it all night afterwards, I even took a shower. I appreciate the business, but there is no reason any customer needs to pick up something at a store and have that experience. It is not good to have a customer walk out and have their the entire night ruined because they smelled something they shouldn't smell because they got leaked on by one of your products that obviously was not inspected correctly before it hit the shelves. Just want to state the facts here. 3 situation: This Pet Hotel Daycare/boarding gave me back a bloody dog. They were kind and assumed the vet bill however, we never received a explanation that made any sense. We did however accept that perhaps it was a fluke if nature but clearly no one was watching him and no one called us. Please 2 staff members were rude about it. Thank God for Marsha ( store manager) who took care of the situation. Another occasion: Dogs all caught kennel cough (3), their was way too much food left. We decided this place was unfit for our fur babies and we vowed to never use there pet hotel again. A year later... they called us and told us to come get our dog. They harassed us for 2 weeks even after we told them that it wasn't our dog and that it was a mistake. We payed then a visit to settle it once and for all. They gave us a paper with my name forged on it, a fake address, a fake phone number; my name was written like a kindergartener write it. He came back with matted eyes, poop matted into his bottom, unable to bark for two days and his bark is not correct now and more than half his food was returned. I am beyond pissed. I brought my puppy Joey here for services: Grooming, 1-on-1 training, and for a puppy Sundae. I dropped him off about 12:30pm, about 1:30, I received a call from a staff member asking if I noticed my dog was limping.. (this is where shit goes downhill) Instead of calling me and stating my puppy was injured in their care, they tried to pushed the blame on me w/that stupid ass question. When we arrived my Jack Russell Terrier was in perfect puppy health. Of course, he wasn't "limping" in my care. Logically speaking, if my dog had a limp prior to his appointment, why would I bring him there for physical activities and why wasnt this spotted during his evaluation? The more the employee spoke, the more bullshit came out of his mouth. He said Joey completed his 1-on-1 training, he even played outside w/ the trainer for 15 mins outside, so if he was physically able to accomplish two of the services, how dare you call me asking if I noticed he had a limp. (Btw, the story gets better....) Joey was placed in room 101, where it appears the injury took place. Per the employee, the room has no cameras (therefore the incident was not recorded)The employee then stated JRTs are known for "faking" injured (on what f**king planet?) I'm not a pet owner just to say I am a pet owner, prior to purchasing my pure breed pooch, extensive research etc., was done! (Moving on....) they offered to take my puppy to VCA because there was no available vets at Banfield hospital (how convenient!). I went to VCA to get my dog, when I arrived due to COVID - you have to sit in your car, each spot is numbered. The front desk staff stated I could not come in but offered to bring my dog to the car. When they brought him to the car, he seem to have anxiety, he was shaking and upset. I spoke with the vet, who stated they believe he has a sprain and/or inflammation in his left hind leg. So they provided him with two medications to take - annoyed they didn't do an x-Ray. I didn't notice the severity of his injury until he got home. My dog cannot walk and/or stand on all 4. Since coming home, he hasnt moved, I have to lift him to use a wee-wee pad. All he is doing is laying down, sleeping, barely eating and/or moving. I am taking him to his vet and getting a second option. I am so pissed over this, I will be speaking to my lawyer about my options as I await PetSmart's investigation. This review is for the Grooming salon only, specifically my experience with Michael b. I took my 8-month old shih tzu/toy poodle mix dog for a bath and full haircut. Unfortunately, I should have read the other reviews prior to selecting him as my groomer. Several hours after dropping her off, he calls and says my pup is being aggressive and biting while he is trying to do her front legs and face. He asks if he could restrain her if necessary. This was odd, because I have taken her to several groomers in Alexandria and none have complained about aggressive behavior. Her cut was way shorter than I wanted and did not look clean or even throughout. When I got her home I noticed she had a cut on one of her back legs. I believe if my dog was in fact aggressive, I believe it occurred after he cut her on her back leg and she was then bleeding and in pain the rest of the session. The next day my vet agreed it was a pretty bad cut that looked to come from grooming tools and not an injury she would get in the normal course of the day. In the following days, I can tell she is in pain on her back leg. I find it horrible service that he wouldn't own up to his mistake and point out the injury. I will never return for grooming services which is sad because Talaysha is AMAZING and so kind and gentle for bath and brush services. read more

Brought my pet here to be groomed and she returned with open wounds under her armpits. For context, I have a 6lb sweet as pie dog with absolutely no grooming anxiety - so she is super easy to groom. In full disclosure, I can only review this place when it comes to the staff and types of animals they have here. My 2-year-old daughter and I came here while my wife was shopping at nearby Target to keep her entertained. She loved it. Here's why: 1) Pets: They have a variety of pets here that my daughter loved seeing. They have a long wall of hundreds of fish, a few cages of parrots, hamsters, snakes, lizards, turtles, and more. The Saturday we went they brought in puppies for adoption. They also have a dog day care with glass windows for people to watch the dogs. 2) Staff: The employees we met were friendly and displayed deep care for the pets. as they fed each pet, they explained to my toddler what they were doing and facts about the different animals. read more

They get 2 stars for my dog coming home alive. Our most recent stay was our second time at this location. The first time was back in February. This most recent time I had two dogs stay and asked for a bath and nail trim for my female dog. They gave the bath to the male dog (yes it was specified at drop off). The staff seemed pretty unapologetic and careless so that goes to show how much they care about your pet! In February my dog stayed for 3 nights. Our most recent visit was a couple weeks ago. Both times my dog comes home with kennel cough. My dog is up to date and very healthy so that fact that she can stay here for a few nights and come back BOTH times is kind of unacceptable. We didn't have these issues at the Springfield location. We won't be back at this one probably let alone any PetSmart. There are plenty other places that I'm positive will take more genuine and compassionate care of your pet. read more

Poor communication and practices. My dog has stayed at this pethotel multiple times with his heart murmur. The reservation team confirms my appointment aware of the heart murmur but does not know the "standard practices" of the hotel which is NOW that they don't keep pets with heart conditions. I'm assuming because of the unexplained deaths they have now decided to enforce their practices. Two days before my dog was supposed to stay with them I call to confirm some changes and as I get transferred to the store they tell me my dog can't stay. Despite me being contacted from someone from Petsmart saying he could stay. Imagine my disdain of being inconvenienced for a second time by this location. I first spoke with Arden and then the store manager Cindy who refused to give me any type of information for their district manager Cassandra. Apparently they don't care to have the communication rectified or care about the satisfaction (or inconvenience for that matter) of the consumer. Also after contacting the customer service line they still can't disclose the information for Cassandra so who knows if the complaint will even be seen by her. read more

The appointment process was swift and professional however, they did not inform me that I needed bring my dogs vaccination card. Fine, mistakes happen we were able to show a photo and get him in to get his nails clipped and groomed. He was dropped off at 2:15 pm. At 4:30pm my husband receives a message that our dog (listed by name) is ready for pick up. When my husband arrives they tell him our dog is not ready and that they do not send messages just calls. When shown the message, that's when they apologize and state that they have only cut the nails and then mention that my dog was being aggressive. My dog has been taken to numerous groomers not one complaint now all of a sudden Petsmart states he has an aggression issue. After an hour still no call so my husband goes again to check and this time he was ready, they didn't call. I just wish they had puppy coats as the little guy shivers outside, but we understand we're at the end of the season. There were a lot of choices across price points for toys, food and treats. I recently left my dog here for boarding. I boarded two of my dogs. One of my dogs had scratches on her nose. I was called and informed about that they explained to me that my dog was pushing her face up against the gate so they moved her into a glass window cage. My other dog who I boarded prior to me picking him up I noticed a deep gash on his back with fur missing this was indeed a big cut. He also had a scatch on his face with a swollen eye. His eye was is purple around it with red marks at the top of his eye. As I explained this to them no one could explain what happened I never received a call that my other dog had scratches and cuts. I remember as I was being checked out one of the employees mentioning to me that my dog went to the bathroom a lot in his cage. I am wondering if that is the reason he has a cut on his back and a blackened eye. I do not know but I will not be sending my pets here any more. This place needs to be shutdown. It breaks my heart to know that i left my dog with someone who would abuse them. I am very disappointed and very sad that my dogs have been boarded with them. Do NOT get your dog groomed at this store. I've gotten my dog groomed at petsmart stores before, but this is the first time I went to this location. Drop her off for a 11:30am appt and was told it would take 3-4hrs to groom and that they would call me. No problem, that's a usual amount of time especially on a busy weekend. I come back 4hrs later and had to ask if she was done since I never got a call.... I'm asked my dogs name and I tell them. One groomer there stated he was just finished and called him a male yellow husky. RED FLAG: I have a female dog AND she's a white German Shepard. (And if your wondering if they were referring to another dog there, no they meant my dog) The male groomer whom apparently groomed my dog rudely said he called me but no one picked up. I had zero missed calls or messages and I stated such to him. He then referred to my dog as a male. Little concerning when you've been the one grooming my dog. I waited as he finished talking to another customer. Then he got my dog and he walked me to the back doggie day care area to print off the form. While waiting for him to print the form he goes on about how he called my number, asks for me what my number is and then stated he called the wrong number because he read the form wrong. Then goes on about how I'm not in the petsmart system...yet I received texts from petsmart all the time. And when I booked the appt through the petsmart mobile app, my phone number is in there. I ask him how long my dog had been done for and he stated a little over an hour. So she'd be sitting in a cage for at least an hour, which I'm not happy about. After her answers that question he goes on about how he can't continue calling the pet owners on the weekend when they are busy. He calls once and he is done. Then he proceeds to try and change topic and talks about how well she did and how calm she is. ...at this point I'm upset and I just want my form so I can check out and pay the $72 for the bath (and upgraded chi and nail grind package). So I sat there quietly and put on my dogs harness, grabbed the form, and went to check out. Once I get home I check my dog out and while she looks clean, a few of her nails are splinting and I have to pull the random piece of nail off. It's really disappointing to pay extra money to get the nail grind and it's not done with the appropriate amount of care. I call the store and ask to speak to the manager. I talk with a woman who while friendly, states it's not on petsmart to call the owners when their dog is done. Shocking since I was told I would be called when she was done. She goes on to offer me to bring back my dog next week to get redone, but at this point I'm disappointed all around and want nothing to do with the grooming services. I state as much and tell her I just wanted to give feedback. The woman then states she's the store manager and if she takes my number she will have the grooming manager call me when she gets back from vacation. I leave my number and was going to wait until I heard from the grooming manager. This is where it gets interesting (keep in mind this all happens the same exact day). My sister used to work as a groomer at petsmart (different store) and I was talking to her about it. I don't have a Facebook, but my sister does so she posted grooming issue on the petsmart grooming page. The grooming manager apparently comments back saying she can't speak professionally, but sometimes PP's mishear things and her team calls PP at the number they provide. I find it a problem that she can take to social media providing her opinion about the situation completely without reviewing the issue with both the customer and team member. And how could she even fully review the incident with both of us within hours of the incident and still on vacation. Unprofessional. I honestly was just attempting to provide feedback to the PetSmart's grooming department, but this has been such a negative experience all around.
