So my Aspengirl and I have a regular habit of walking down here Friday afternoons and getting her a treat. While their treat assortment is always amazing - and staff are always so loving to my 50/50 girl (half the time she's nice to other dogs in the store, half the time she's not havin' it) - our favorite experience is how they helped fit her recently for a new sweater. Between how kind they were to her as they measured her, showed me how to get her into and out of her sweater, and kept me posted on when the right size would be coming in, it was an all around fantastic experience. We stopped in here based on a recommendation from our neighbor because our puppy had an upset stomach and was scratching a lot after his walks. The staff here is extremely helpful and knowledgeable about dogs. We bought some goats milk (serves as a probiotic) and some itch relief spray. We made the goats milk into frozen cubes and we give it to our puppy a few times a well he thinks it's a little treat and his tummy hasn't been upset . The itch relief spray has definitely worked wonders for the scratching after his walks. I would recommend this small business to any pet owner and we will be back to shop for our puppy. read more

Filthy dirty environment! I was shocked! Flies and bugs on the bones, other dog treats like the chicken heads and feet. Honestly, I'm surprised dogs don't leave there sick after visiting! Annabelle is always helpful, she is much loved in the dog community... but if she isn't on site, the advice you get is neither well-informed nor helpful. And the girl behind the counter that day was more interested in her cell phone than me. Although they are local to Potomac Yard, I seriously don't mind driving further for a more enjoyable shopping experience. read more

I usually LOVE this dog store so much - the employees are usually so friendly and always offer my lil dog a treat. I've gone here now 4 times and usually this nice lady is there and remembers my face or usually my dog. She's always very helpful and answers my (many) questions as I didn't grow up with animals. The last time I went here, a different cashier (unfortunately don't have her name) gave me so much shade because I asked a simple question regarding how to help prevent tick bites. She made me feel like I was not doing a good job as a pet owner since I wasn't going to the vet for monthly heart worm treatments (growing up I only went to the doctor if I was sick so the idea of going whenever you feel like it is very foreign or me.) As it just so happens, my dog won first place (in one of the categories) at the Del Ray Halloween Parade. She won a $50 gift certificate for The Dog Store - cool! So we traveled over to the quaint slice of life town called "Del Ray" nestled in Alexandria. The area is filled with small mom & pop businesses and eateries. One such gem is The Dog Store. This 'boutique" place is filled with leashes, collars, bowls, treats and other assorted K9 goodness. It's like an "Unleashed" but a third of the size. While they only carry healthy options, they were a little slim on actual food. A few canned options and some dry kibble - mostly Taste of the Wild and Orjen. Knowing that Costco sells Taste of the Wild (for half the price) under the name "Nature's Domain" I told the employee and she was quite surprised. They do have a great selection of cool leashes - I especially liked the shock-absorbing type leashes. But I opted to spend my gift certificate on treats. They have a very large variety of healthy snacks for dogs so I was quite happy.. so are our pups. My girl has two Italian Greyhounds with very few teeth, so I had asked for a small & soft treat - she directed me to treats that the IGs love. From what I understand, there's a daycare for dogs up on J. D. Highway and this location is their retail store. Very cute place yet lacks the food options that other pet stores carry. But if you need accessories, leashes,collars, toys, bowls, harnesses, etc... this is a gem of a place. read more

I stopped here after strolling down Mount Vernon. Because everyone has a dog in Del Ray (not an over-exaggeration, I swear) I wasn't surprised to see a cute pet boutique in the area. After reading a bit more about it, I found out that Your Dog's Best Friend was actually a dog daycare further up Alexandria, and this is "The Store", a location that provides food/treats, accessories, toys, etc. for your pup. I have a cat, but that didn't stop me from poking my head in and looking around. From my experience, a lot of "dog" boutiques also feature some kitty things, so I figured it'd be worth a shot. There were a few sweaters (in extra small) that my kitty would look good in and looked to be of very good quality. They didn't have any treats or other accessories that would be suitable for my cat other than that. The store itself is kind of small. It's set up intuitively, with like-products grouped together. They had a very good selection of dog foods and treats all together. They also had a tiny collection of collars and leashes on the wall. Everything was pretty basic, though. The selection for those seemed pretty boring. (They only had standard colors/designs and I like more unique things.) The staff was very nice. There was only one person working at the time, and there were a few customers in the shop. He very effectively divided his attention between us, asking the standard questions like, "Do you need any help today?" He seemed somewhat knowledgeable about the products they carried, but I didn't ask him anything specific. I'd give this place 3 stars. Me being a cat owner and not finding anything kitty-appropriate had nothing to do with it, I swear! I understand that this place caters to dogs and their owners. My rating is based around the size, selection, and price here. The store is small, but it still seems like they could put way more stuff in here! If you're looking for something, I'd actually suggest a Petco because they do seem to have a lot more variety of products. The prices weren't outrageous, but you could definitely find things cheaper if you shopped around a bit. However, if you want quality products, I don't think you can go wrong here. Your Dog's Best Friend is a popular service in Alexandria, and I expect nothing less in terms of quality and service with "The Store". read more

I almost passed by this store, even tho Christmas would not be Christmas if I did not buy a toy for my sister's excellent dog. I thought, I'll go to Petco, probably cheaper. But the knowledgeable staff person here made an excellent toy suggestion, and the toy was by far not one of their more expensive options. this is the best dog store in Alexandria by far....the times that I have been in I am always greeted by Jiff,I think he's Swedish maybe..a jovial bespectacled fellow who is always willing to steer me to the right food and such for my little poo-poo...I only really shop here because of him..its a little out of the way for me but he makes it worth the trip..a pleasure to stop in every time he's there...his knowledge far exceeds dogdom... he is a human encyclopedia of randomness...you gotta love the guy! top notch,highly recommend! UPDATE! with no manager Jiff then there is no customer service....I went in this week and the unperson able robot salesperson trash talked the old boy...i could read into the small minded small business "politics" a mile away..from what I could piece together sounds like he got a better job offer somewhere else and the owner took things personally,must be one of "those kind" of bosses..all I know is i will never step foot in the store again...the atmosphere is very stale and negative without the guy..,also seems a bit messy and disorganized now ..hopefully he was scooped up by the competition down the avenue and puts em' out of business! read more

I'm always looking for random stores to take my dogs. The big box stores all carry the same thing, so it gets a little mundane. I'm really glad I found this gem, they had tons of stuff I hadn't seen before and what was even more surprising was their prices! My dog breeder was really assertive about buying high quality dog food, so I got in the habit of buying Orijen, Acana, and Heritage, all of which never offer discounts. This place has the best prices I've found so far, and I buy several healthy chews that I haven't found anywhere else. I can't say whether the toys/treats are priced well, but I'm willing to stop buy for the dog food. The gentleman who helped me was awesome, he had a wealth of product knowledge and advice. Bonus points for being across the street from Dairy Godmother custard, just another excuse to stop by! read more

Had a wonderful experience today getting a harness for my 4 month old Aussie. They took their time and let him try on multiple different types and sizes of harness. I even was allowed to take him for a spin around the street to see how the harness performed in action. Finally settled on a harness and picked up a few other items. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. A must go if you are looking to get friendly advice and quality toys. read more

First, I cannot overstate how much my dog Bodhi loves this store and the people in it. We call it "Bodhi's store." We live in Del Ray (affectionately and accurately referred to by my niece as "Dog City"), about 4 blocks away. As we're prepping Bodhi for his evening walk, if we say "Do you want to go to Bodhi's store?" he immediately starts whimpering with excitement and then proceeds to drag us the entire way there, forgetting he needs to go potty and foregoing all opportunities to play with other dogs along the way (he makes up for that on the way home, of course). He then runs through the door with joy and immediately proceeds to the counter, where he gets his usual treat and SO much love from Jeff. It is my mission in life to keep my Bodhi boy happy and his frequent trips here are a huge part of that. Bodhi has a lot of food allergies/sensitivities and Jeff does an incredible job keeping the store stocked with special treats that we can't find anywhere else. He is aware of Bodhi's allergies and will always keep me informed when he has gotten in new products that we might want to try and kindly gives a sample so we can see if Bodhi likes it. Most importantly, Jeff is so friendly and great with the dogs that come in and they really love him. He truly is part of this community that really values its pooches! This kind of customer service really sets this store apart from places like PetSmart. read more

Used to love this place, but we won't be shopping here anymore. We have been buying two large bags of dog food per month here for a while now. The last few months, they are out of stock more often than not. You'd think seeing the same person ask for the same food multiple times a month for a few months in a row would trigger the staff to order a little extra of that particular product, but apparently that's not how things work at this place. What makes it worse is that the staff person (the same person multiple times) seems like she couldn't care less that they are repeatedly out of stock, and she's not exactly forthcoming with any information or effort that might help me get my food before they run out. I can't spend my afternoons scrambling to find dog food anymore, so I'm done with this place. I'll take my purchase of two bags a month of one of your most expensive foods elsewhere. Probably one of the many places online offering my particular choice of food at a competitive price. One morning I showed up about 5 minutes before the store opened. The staff person (the same lady, again) unlocked the door and started moving their multitudes of little decorative items out to the front of the store. I was standing right there but she didn't even acknowledge me. I said hi to her and she just sort of looked at me. When she finished moving all the stuff out, she just walked back in and left me standing there. She didn't tell me she was open and ready for business or anything. And when I walked in, she didn't greet me. Small business owners, if you want people to buy from you, you need to have something to sell. And you need to hire people who don't treat your customers like an annoyance. read more

The place is really nice looking and had some great stuff, but the women running the store on Sunday, July 31, 2016 was extremely unfriendly. I have managed a boutique store before, and if she were my employee, i would have fired her. We would've bought more and probably become regular patrons if she even tried to help us or respond with words when we tried to talk to her instead of just pointing and then looking away from us. Really disappointing, especially for a dog store where you'd think staff would be pleasant and at least mildly enthusiastic. Having just moved to the neighborhood this past spring, we looked forward to finding a "local" shop who carried high quality dog food and other dog related items. After several purchases at The Dog Store, we could no longer tolerate the "meh" attitude displayed by the clerk - same clerk each time we visited. He (Caucasian male, 40's) could not be any less helpful. In fact, on our last visit in late summer, he was remarkably rude to another customer who was asking a question. Our dog loves her time at You Dog's Best Friends. When she came to us from the rescue society, she was very skittish. However, because of her time at YDBF, she now loves to play with other dogs and has warmed up to other people. When we arrive in the morning, she would walk right to the door of her room if I didn't hold her leash.
