For a small BBQ place, these guys know how to make their brisket. It's all about the brisket. And it's the strangest brisket I've ever had. Why? Because it's the driest brisket I've ever had so I was initially skeptical and how tasty it would be. Brisket packs a lot of flavor and it's really good. I was so surprised. I didn't think you could have such dry brisket and still be good. I even told the cook this too. Brought some of my Soldiers here and some of them claimed it was the best BBQ they've ever had. I'm not usually one for BBQ.. Like, ever. It's just NOT a style of cuisine that my palate is in agreement with. So when my mother came to visit, she was craving some good old Texas BBQ. Well, I couldn't object, so we looked for a good place. After searching online for the best-reviewed place, we decided on Petty's. And I'm glad we did. I don't remember what it was my mother ordered, but she was thoroughly impressed and left full. I remember I go the chopped chicken BBQ sandwich with mac 'n cheese and green beans. It was delicious! The chicken was moist and tender, and the sauce was glorious. Not too sweet, not too tart, and not too spicy; perfectly balanced with a hint of aromatic smoke to tip it off. My only complaint is that the bread didn't hold up very well, and it wasn't the best quality. Your standard grocery-store hamburger bun, and while that's fine, it was kind've a turn of. Especially when that BBQ was so darn good; it kinda sucked the life out of it a bit. I don't expect them to get bakery-fresh bread for their BBQ, but perhaps it's time to part from the standard processed bread. Just throwing that out there for consideration. The mac 'n cheese was great, and the green beans were decent enough. Even the staff members were wonderful. They were very helpful when it came to choosing food options and offered sound advice and flavor choices. They were talkative and personable, and asked after us as we ate. We pretty much gave up on bbq, but after a recommendation from a friend we decided to give Petty's a try and they didn't disappoint. We ordered the Petty Pack which came with 2lbs of meat, 3 pint sides and a half a loaf of bread. We decided on pulled pork, brisket, mac n cheese, green beans and potato salad. The pulled pork was good, but OMG the brisket. It was so moist and utterly delicious. The Dr. Pepper sauce complemented the meat well. I went during lunch hours and there wasn't a long wait, so that's a plus. The staff were really honest, he asked what I really wanted and gave his recommendations. The restroom is small and dark. There seating isn't normal, there are picnic tables inside and they're slightly low to the ground. I had chicken, brisket, pinto beans and macaroni. It was really good and flavorful. The owner or manager should probably upgrade to real plates and silverware for dine in customers as opposed to paper plates and plastic silverware. Saddly another regular, *not really trying" BBQ place. The Good Large rations at a reasonable price, fast service, perfect for an hour lunch break. Above average sausage by Killeen standards. Good banana "pudin" it's not really pudin but it's taste and homemade. The bad The meats taste the same, saddly like every BBQ place I've been in killeen, there's nothing to the sauces just vinegar and sugar, the hot one is kinda different but still could be better. So good you don't need sauce, but all their sauces are great so I make little piles of each on my plate. The pork shoulder super tender and brisket that doesn't need a knife to cut it. Great customer service, came in around dinner and got the last bit of chopped brisket. Also had chopped pork, mac n cheese and green beans. The little bit of brisket the werwe able to give me was amazing. I didn't eat anything until I dug out every piece of brisket from my plate. Burnt ends were awesome and the meat was full of flavor. Mac n Cheese was good but I have a very high standard for that. Green beans, off the chain. Second best thing on the plate! To the bad.... Chopped pork was not so good. It was very generic and bland. I pride myself in the smoking that I do so when I go to what I hear is the best in town, every meat should be tolerable and yummy. I tried several bites to find a good piece of meat and it just didn't happen. Corn bread, nothing special. BBQ Sauce, this should be a BBQ joint's staple. The thing that is paired with the smokey meat and takes it to another level. When I see bottles of bbq sauce from the grocery store, that's not cool. So of course I try the house bbq sauces and they really didn't taste good. They all were bland and weren't at all tasty. So I will go back for the brisket, which I can eat without the bbq sauce happily and give it all a try again. I didn't get the banana pudding either so that is something I will need to make happen as well. You know when you walk into a place and you feel like you are being rushed to order? Yeah that's deff this place! They stare at you waiting for the order instead of giving a person time. I stubbed my toe on the door, as I was walking in and was bleeding very badly so I was worried about that, rather than ordering food. Finally, when I kept saying I wasn't ready to the worker noticed, and asked if I needed a Bandaid, so atleast that was nice of her. Now to the food.. I don't think this place deserves 4 stars. The only thing that we ordered that was good was the pulled pork and brisket. I ordered sausage and it seemed like it wasn't even barbecued. No sign that it was on the grill; it was just warm cut up sausage. The Mac n Cheese was watery and barely had flavor. The lemonade and tea didn't taste authentic. I think they just poured mix into the batch of water because it tasted artificial and really sweet. The barbecue sauce was watery and didn't taste like bbq sauce at all!! Last, is the banana pudding cheese cake or whatever. It was too sweet and mainly filled with whip cream. It has bits of chocolate looking something in there, which idk why cause that wasn't in the description? But whatever, there had no cream cheese or cheese cake filling so I just threw it away! Not impressed. The brisket was very tough, fatty and with very little flavor. It didn't really have any type of smoke flavor. The ribs were a little better but still lacked the tenderness needed. Tough with a lot of meat left on the bone. Potato salad was nothing to write home about, Big chucks of potatoes took away from the texture and flavor of the salad. This was a pretty delicious BBQ joint. I had the "JoJo Chicken" which is a half chicken plate with two sides. I had the green beans (salty but delicious as that's how I like it) and the Cole slaw which was tasty and simple. Odd that she herself was complaining to her colleague in her dialect after we couldn't figure out what to order. She was also extremely abusive to the other employees. The food was cold since it had been sitting out and had no seasoning. They could use a health inspection ASAP. The racist abusive woman originally lied about not having certain items and the moment we were about to walk out she mysteriously found what we wanted. We were looking for lunch after a trip through the base museum and found (with a little work) Petty's BBQ. It's a small place in a small strip center, but worth the trip. We happened to make it on a Friday, which means fried cabbage. Never had it - a strange but excellent addition to BBQ. I don't think the BBQ could hang with some of the central Texas legends, but its definitely respectable. Try the chicken - there is something different in the rub. Avoid the brisket, unless you just refuse to eat pork. The base should have Petty's waiting on the tarmac as flights return from the Middle East. Way better welcome home. read more

My family and I got the Petty Pack meal and it was DELICIOUS! It came with 2 lbs of meat- we got the brisket and sausage and 3 sides- we chose macaroni and cheese, fried cabbage, and potato salad. The brisket is legit! If you like holes in walls that serve up great food and pass those overhead savings on to you, then try this place out! I asked for brisket by the pound and it was delicious. I was done before I looked over and realized they had bbq sauce. It didn't need it. The cucumber kimchi (only served Monday's) was too sweet. I like the fizzy type kimchi a lot better. This the best BBQ in the Killeen and Harker Heights area. I live in Temple and come here with no problems. The BBQ sauce is awesome. The food is always great and the portions are great. The lemonade is sooooo good! All the food I have ate (which is a lot) has been well seasoned, tender and juicy. The smell of the food cooking out side can be smelled before you even pull up, it literally draws you in. This location can be easily passed up if you are not looking for it, but smell for the smell let your nose guide you here. The employees are always nice and friendly. This restaurant is ummm ummm good! Hands down the best in the area. Way better then any chain BBQ restaurant! If you haven't been to this restaurant not sure what you are waiting for. Only down fall is they are closed on Monday but I have learned to deal with it. read more

Great local bbq place with a convenient location in Killeen - not far from Fort Hood. Visited on a Saturday afternoon with my wife and two children. Place is clean, staff are friendly and efficient and the prices are reasonable. I had the combo plate - half chicken and puled pork with potato salade, pinto beans and cornbread. Wife had the same with the coleslaw. Daughter had a chicken sandwich plate while the baby had a side order of mac and cheese. Sweet tea or lemonade for everyone. Food was out quickly, hot and delicious. Chicken was incredibly moist, pork was easily the smokiest I've ever consumed - and the bbq sauce was the perfect complement to the smokey - saltiness. Mac and cheese was legit - cheesey. Potato salad was good, as were the slightly seasoned pinto beans. Its really awesome Bar B Que!!! Seen the commercials many times decided to try it and bought a coupon from seize the deal to be able to try it. I got two of the wrangler strangler things( 2 meats and sides). Had the ribs and got sausage and brisket for my Boyfriend. I got the mac and cheese and green beans. Got potato salad and brown beans for David. We got the cornbread. David loves cornbread so I gave him mine LOL Let me tell you it was super tasty. Sorry, I was really excited for this. After eating there I got severe stomach cramps and fun to follow. Based on my Occupation, I understand food borne illness. It appeared clean, not sure where the problems started. The brisket tasted average, pinto beans did not have flavor, and Mac and cheese was just average as well. I used to live in Killeen and our coaching staff would go to Petty's and the brisket was one of the best. Ownership changed within the last year and it's just not the same. Owners are extremely nice but I was disappointed. The brisket was dry and extremely tough. It used to be melt in your mouth good. I also ordered the pulled pork which was chopped.
