First time trying this BBQ place. I highly recommend this place. The ribs are even better than Rudy's BBQ. The meat falls off the bone, their most brisket is great, the sausage is great, the coleslaw and potato salad is the best I ever had. I can only find two things that need to be addressed. Wow. I'm not a brisket fan but, this was phenomenal. Pulled pork was delicious but a touch dry. Only three sauces, "spicy" was spicy but still sweet and not overpowering, the standard "sweet" is just that. A basic, to the point sweet barbecue sauce that hits all the right marks. Mustard sauce was again, a basic mustard sauce sweetened just enough to knock down the tart a bit. Thank you, Yelp Search, for helping me find Petty's BBQ. This place is pretty damn good and I've had my fair share of wood smoked low and slow BBQ between here and there. If you're gonna be in town for a visit, then bookmark this place and check them out. They're relatively easy to get to, and they should keep the wood smoker out front because it's the landmark I needed to find. During my temporary work assignment in Central Texas, I made it a point to stop by a local place that was not available in my hometown for grabbing snacks before retiring to the hotel after another 12-hour workday. Mission accomplished and I visited Petty's once more for lunch before driving to the airport for my return flight. I sampled a variety of smoked barbecue, homemade side dishes and an icy glass (or two) of sweet tea. Photos attached. I have to admit, the amount of sugar in a proper tea recipe is much more than I'm accustomed to, but it certainly is refreshing on a hot day and that sweetness compliments the savory food and hearty sauces nicely. The vibe is super casual and the folks working there are nice. On my dinner visit, it looked like they were closing shop early. Maybe calling ahead to see if your favorite dish is available because they make limited quantities, then that's it for the day. I asked for a sampler platter of what was left and dude hooked it up. I tried my best to devour what I could, but had to cram the leftovers in the hotel mini-fridge as 4th meal snacks. In the words of Keith Jackson: "Whooaa Nellie!!" This little place in Killeen pumps out some biggest BBQ flavors in the area, and I'm not just talking BBQ, their Cheesecake Banana Pudding is Blue Ribbon quality - - a show stopper. On my way back to Austin from Killeen I used Yelp to help guide the way, looking for the highest rated opportunities on the beaten path. Petty's BBQ was tops on the list. It's right off 195 South but you gotta pay attention to the street signs or else you'd easily miss it. Small lot on a corner, it's on a big concrete foundation slab, and there's a "backyard" area that's fenced in where 2 large smokers sit, along w/ all the necessary supplies needed to make BBQ the right way. No pressure cookers here, that's a good sign, I had a good feeling about this. Place is small, about 5-6 picnic tables worth, I look over the menu and there's lots of offerings. I choose the 2 meat plate (ribs and brisket) w/ 2 sides (poto salad + philin mac'n'cheese) w/ cornbread to go, along w/ a small banana pudding and cheesecake banana pudding. I was so hungry that when I got my order I chose to sit down and and have a few bites before hitting the road, and maybe save the rest for dinner or lunch. That's when things took a turn...... The ribs were fantastic! Fall of the bone, smokey, and well seasoned. The brisket was moist, juicy, smokey, not too much seasoning on it but that's what pepper is for. The mac'n'cheese was very good, and I sampled both puddings (banana and cheesecake banana) - which were outta this world. The 2 guys running the counter watched me and were curious, they asked for my feedback. I barely spoke a word as I was finishing the last rib and just looked up at them and said: "I think I'm going to have to give you some more of my money....". They laughed. I'm glad I tried because now it's good enough to order extras to take home for the rest of the week, and I would have been a sad boy had I waited till I got home. The chicken was awesome - well seasoned and juicy. The pork shoulder is full of smokey goodness, light on the seasoning spice, but the spicy sausage rocked! It's not Elgin Sausage - but someone else from TX, it was great to try something new and tasty. I put my 2nd to-go order in just in the nick of time, soon after half the town showed up asking for BBQ and these boys ended up running out. That's what it's like when your BBQ and cuisine is that good - - everyone wants some and you can't keep enough on-hand cuz supplies don't last. First time going , went around 1 o clock . I ordered a half a pound of chicken and moist brisket. Along with backed Mac and cheese and coleslaw. Chicken was kind of dry but fell straight of the bone. The brisket was good along side with there bbq sauce. The backed mac and cheese was really good and the Coleslaw was still crunchy and nice and sweet. Honestly the bbg was the best part. Hidden Gem! A tiny cooking machine met us at the ordering counter. She took our order and we quickly had our food. Beef ribs, cream corn, Mac n cheese, brisket, hot sausage and green beans. And don't forget dessert - banana pudding. Everything was so good! The brisket was so moist, the sauce was so good. The ribs had a great smoky flavor. Good ol fashioned white bread on the side to sop up the juice. The Mac n cheese was so creamy and obviously home made. My husband said the cream corn reminded him of his MeMaw's. Unfortunately it reminded him of how he had to shuck all the corn but it was worth it! I had to take a doggy bag for sooo much meat but I stopped in time for the banana pudding. I stopped by this place today. I thought the food was rather bland. I ordered the rib plate that came with two sides. Ribs were just ok nothing special. The mashed potatoes were good but the Mac and cheese was watery and had no flavor. The two employees weren't too friendly and the customer service in general could be better. We had a party of 8 (four couples) when we dropped in at about 2:00 pm on a weekday. We knew it was going to be good by the smell that hit us as we opened the door. The large sampler plate is the way to go for two people, there was plenty of food for both. Our favorite was the Pulled Pork and the Pork Ribs, both had a nice peppery bite. The pinto beans were an unexpected surprise, they were way better than your usual BBQ place pinto beans. If you are looking for dessert, don't miss the strawberry rhubarb cobbler. read more
