Typical nickaulus designed course. Very fair and can be challenging at times if you hit it to the wrong spot. Not as nice as the stadium course but definitely better than the Norman course. The roughs here are extremely difficult. As in good luck finding your ball it could literally be submerged in the roughs. There's two great holes here with island greens, That is already hard without wind and very tough when there is. Theres Many holes with water in play which will really make you put your course management to work. Overall it's worth playing. Pace even on a busy day is very good. Lots of restrooms throughout the course. And they even have a new gps systems. Each cart has its own water jug. There is a cart girl that goes around. The Marshall also comes around. read more

Nicklaus shares clubhouse and practice facilities with PGA West Stadium Course. Being the less famous of the two, it can be pretty empty and play can be completed in under 4 hours. I found this course to be much easier than the Stadium Course. Holes aren't as long, and par 5s reachable in 2. Greens are guarded, but are pretty reasonable on most. Did get lost trying to find the 17th hole. Signs aren't that obvious how to get there. You are traversing through private streets and in between homes to get from hole to hole at times. Starter and staff make you feel right at home. Get some bills ready, cause the cart guys are used to being tipped. Greens - super smooth pro style greens Fairways - well manicured and narrow - lined with nice homes on most holes Rough - punishing with plenty of lost balls in the long grass and water Water - water comes into play on only a handful of holes Driving range - 1st rate - balls and tees supplied - hitting off grass to grass landing area. DATE PLAYED: January 28, 2014 The PGA West Stadium Course is a must play if you are in the Palm Springs/La Quinta area. After researching where to play golf since I had a free day to play, I decided to play the Stadium Course. I search two discounts websites (GolfNow and Stand By Golf) hoping for a cheap rate since I was a single golfer. Both discount websites had tee times for $230 which was way more than I was willing to pay. I decided to call the pro shop and was informed that the course holds morning tee times on all even dates for the members and releases them three days prior to the date. With this in mind, I waited to book my tee time through the PGA West website and got a 7:03 a.m tee time for $139. From the moment you arrive at the course, customer service is a priority. The bag drop off staff were very friendly as well as the pro shop staff. With a 7:03 a.m. tee time, I was also the only golfer on the driving range. The driving range was fully stocked with golfer balls with a grass stations. As I approached the starter, I was notified that I was being paired with one of the PGA West members. The member was very nice and advised me of where to aim on each hole. The greens where pure and running 10 on the stimp meter. Tee boxes and fairways were in excellent shape. Since it was only the member and I with no one in front of us, we finished the round in 2 hours and 45 minutes. I ended up playing the Blue tees and shooting a 79. Since I was able to finish the round by 10 am and under 3 hours, I took advantage of the replay rate which was $79 for Stadium Course and $59 for Nicklaus, Norman, La Quinta Dunes or Mountain courses. PGA West Stadium has more sand then the beach. To get our moneys worth I tested nearly everyone of them. Sad but true. When you come to a course like this you want to be playing your best golf. The week prior they hosted a Q school (PGA Qualifying) event so the greens were fast and pins were placed in a challenging place to say the least. They did roll very true though. But if you get the speed wrong you're next putt is longer then your first or you just might be chipping which was the case for myself and others in our group. Beautiful course throughout though...peppered with bunkers in landing areas and no easy approaches to greens so no running up thinned shots. Rough and bunkers guard all shots that are not struck well. The starter said something that will give you a good idea of how technical the course is....he says..."the only level shots you'll have today is off the tee boxes." He was spot on. I believe the course is rated at 140 from the whites and with the green speeds and pin placement that day I would say a bit higher. Lovely course, but just be ready to hit straight or bring a couple extra balls. Oh yeah hole 16 has a bunker that you will not believe. 40 feet down in the back...insane! And 17 is a beautiful island green. Too nice! read more

Overall, I enjoyed the Stadium Course at PGA West. I'm giving it 1 less star than its sister course the Nicklaus Tournament course since the NT was a little more enjoyable (also significantly less $$$). But still, this is a very worthy course, extremely challenging, even for the pros. I feel like this course should have a sign similar to the one on the 1st hole of Bethpage Black: "WARNING: The Stadium Course is an extremely difficult course, which we recommend only for highly skilled golfers." It's right up there with the TPC Sawgrass Stadium course in terms of difficulty, which is also a Pete Dye classic, although I will say that this course is a lot more forgiving off of the tee. Here's my summary: Service: 5 stars No major complaints here, great service. Only minor complaint is the fact that they force everyone to have no more than 2 carts in each group - having 3 carts as we originally planned, probably would have saved us some time and sped up the pace of play - hint, hint to the starter/marshals. I KNOW you guys aren't lacking on golf carts, so if a group has 3 carts, it's probably for a good reason. Like 1 person hits it 150 off the tee, and the other hits it 300. Anyway, I digress. Facility: 5 stars Clubhouse is nice, practice facilities are some of the best I've seen - there's a reason why this place is the "home of golf in America on the West Coast" Course Design: 3 stars I thought the Nicklaus course layout was a little bit better - a little more fair. Some of the holes here are very tricked out - not a huge fan of that. Probably a little too much water on the course for my taste. Also, i don't think it's necessarily playable for folks that are over a 10 handicap, or don't hit it over 230-250. Some of the forced carries are challenging for the pros, let alone amateurs. Course Condition: 4 stars For some reason, I felt that the Nicklaus course was in slightly better shape. Probably because it gets slightly less play than the Stadium course does, which doesn't really make a lot of sense. But it was still in very good shape. Greens were super fast - not much faster than the Nicklaus course though. If you're debating which course to play, do yourself a favor and play the Nicklaus course. Your round will probably be 30 minutes less, and you'll enjoy yourself more, and probably pay less $. However, if you want to be challenged like few other courses, play the Stadium and try your luck. World class. Pete Dye's design speaks for itself. With exception of your tee-shot, every shot will be on unleveled footing. Carts are equipped with GPS which provide flyover/approach/green views and touch screen sensors over any point of the map to gauge risk/reward down to the yard. Course will test all aspects of your game. Service was also first class. As soon as I parked a bag attendant pulled up, took our bags and loaded up our carts which included tee-times and scorecards with all our names printed. Marshalls kept all groups on pace to meet the 4.5hr goal in addition to handing out wet towels soaked in ice water about every 4 holes. The Jack Nicklaus course was a great round. There was no lack of challenges on this course for sure. This course has a slope rating of 143 and two island greens (one semi-island). I played it early in the morning around 7:20 am by myself and finished in 3 hrs (playing 2 balls on most holes). After playing the Stadium, I would definitely warm up here first before. It's very similar in nature and some of the larger traps reminded me of the Stadium without the Pete Dye exclamation marks. Forgiving fairway shots lead into a much more demanding 2nd and third shot. Planning on attending Q-School, well you better start practicing here since it hosts the PGA Tour's find round of Q-School on both this course along with the Stadium. +If you book your tee time through their website, not on the phone, and not through golfnow, but on their reservation system on their website, you'll find some discounted rates. +Nice facility and great practice range (big). +secret locker room in the bathroom (go into the unmarked door, it's a good place to change your shoes). +Course is kept in great condition -Bring your A game if you want a low score. read more

Wow!! The Stadium course is on point! Had the pleasure of playing this last month when its was ridiculously hot! But with the heat comes some well priced green fees. Think we paid $70 for twilight, compared to $250 during prime time I'll take it and run! What can i say about this course? Every hole is unique and beautiful! You'll walk up to some holes just saying "are you serious!?" Course was in great shape, greens were well paced and rolled true. Fairways were like carpet and the rough!!! wow, the starter said "this season has been very humid and the rough was extremely thick." Didn't really believe him until hole #1! overcooked a 9 iron out of the fairway bunker long and doubled it due to this lovely humidity rough! This course is a monster and if you're not hitting straight just take in the scenery and forget the score cause either way you're gonna enjoy yourself. Played from the tips and at 7300 yards was no joke!! Squeezed out a 78 and def didn't see that coming after the double on #1. If you have a chance to play this course don't hesitate, book the tee time and enjoy it! Clubhouse was also ridiculous! food was good, beer on tap was superb. Had some nice micro brew selections. I recommend the IPA! All in all the experience of this course was top notch! Highly recommend to any golfer! read more

Just played my first 18 at the Stadium course and it was an experience of a lifetime. It is important to note that I'm not a high brow golfer that is a member of a country club, I'm a normal guy who plays public courses maybe once a week. It was Fathers day (June 20) and I was expecting to pay through the nose which wasn't the case. I went through golfnow.com and got a 11:15am tee time for $69 a person. PRE TEE OFF- Super easy to locate...Get off the 10 and stay on Jefferson and follow that till it ends at the Clubhouse. We pulled into the valet parking and they took the bags and parked the car. Super quick service!! We walked into a very nice clubhouse with some great pictures of past players. We checked in at 1050am and the starter was a good guy that gave us some helpful info on getting around the course in one piece. After checking in the group went downstairs to our cart that was ready with our bags and had water in a cooler as well. We made our way to the range for a quick warm up. The range had Taylormade golf balls available for us to hit which is also included in the $69 green fee. After warming up the group went up to the starter at the 1st tee to get things going. He suggested we play from the combo tees(mix of white and blue tees) but the group stuck out our chest and elected to play from the blacks. The only con I have is the GPS(which looked like an amazing system) wasn't working yet every sprinkler had the yardage. The flags also had the laser mirrors on them for those of you with laser range finders. ON THE COURSE- The Stadium Course lived up to its reputation with being unforgiving. Many times myself or a group member would hit what would look like a great shot to find out was perfectly placed in a pot bunker. There are many long carry shots over water and huge bunkers that need the "Hand Wedge" to get out of. The 17th Island Green was awesome but my favorite was making the 5, 6, 7 turn... All over large lakes...the fairways were perfect and every divot had seed/sand in it because the players did their part and took care for this course. The greens were hard and fast which required a strong bump and run game. My high pitch shots seemed to bounce 3 times right off the greens most of the time. ***WARNING*** If you are a hack you might need to bring 2 cases of balls!! We never saw a group in front or behind us for the full 18 which allowed us to experience the course to the fullest. On 16 we all took shots out of the 20+ foot deep bunker, and on 17 we all took at least 2 shots at the Island green even though most of us needed only 1!! The beer cart lady came around every 4 holes and was helpful grabbing our group an extra ice chest for the beers!! The Scores of the group from the blacks went as follows: Bill 104(meltdown on 17 added 6 strokes!!), Myself 96, Brian and Bob 93's. AFTER THE ROUND- The cart attendant took our clubs up to the front of the clubhouse for us to pick up when we were finished at the bar. The bar had a lot of TV's which was nice because the final round of the US Open was on!! We had a couple of cocktails and recapped some of the memorable moments on the course. The Clubhouse seemed to close early but they never told us to leave which was nice. After we settled up we made our way home. read more

PGA WEST Golf Academy - 17th Island Green aka Alcatraz - Golf Near Me - La Quinta, California

One question before I get started. We're in the middle of the desert. Where the heck did all this water come from? Jeesh! As with all the PGA West tracks, this is an incredible adventure. Perfectly manicured fairways, tee boxes and greens in excellent condition and everywhere you look there is danger. Water, bunkers and uneven lies surround every inch of the fairway. Keep it in the center, even if you need to sacrifice quite a bit of distance. This course rates a 74.7/139 from the tips. Unless you're about to head out on the Nationwide Tour or better, I highly reccomend you move up to at least the Championship tees which rate a 71.9/131. This is no place for a Beginner. While the forward tees have much lower slope ratings, the lack of level landing areas all the way up to the green would make it a tough day for someone with a 20 handicap or higher. Signature hole has to be #15 for me. Work your way up the right side fairway with two bomber shots and you're still left with a long wedge shot to a very tight island green surrounded with 360 degrees of water. Service is great, but make sure your cart has water and ice on it before you drive out. This was forgotten on a number of the rounds we played out here. Oh, a wide-brim hat, sunscreen, Gatorade and some food are also an absolute must out here. read more

PGA West Stadium Course, different from the others reviewed, is one of the best courses I've played golf in the US. And it stacks up nicely against the ones I've played in Ireland. PGA West is the former home of the Skins Game and other PGA events. It's noted for it's 17th Island Green. Our group of hackers wanted to see how the pros play, so we opted for the Championship Tees...slope of 150, if you want it. On the first tee, I absolutely STOOD on my drive. I hit a pretty fair iron shot to the green and thought, "What's the big deal? I'm owning this." Then I realized why the pros make their money. The greens are FASSSSSSSSSSSST. Bring your touch, because an 8 footer can easily turn into a knee-knocking four-putt, if you're lucky. There were a few holes where it seemed like we where playing air hockey, just pushing the ball around. The course was in immaculate condition and the staff is outstanding. It has been a while since I was there, but this is probably not going to change much: If you have more money than Croessus, go whenever you want (Read: Fall, Winter, Spring). If you want to SAVE money, playing an incredible course, go in the summer, most specifically August. It is SWELTERING HOT. Not kidding, the temperature was 120 degrees. BUT, it is a "Dry Heat"...at that temperature, the humidity is afraid to come outside. And as such, as long as you stay hydrated you are fine. We drank a cup of water after each shot, wore towels soaked in ice water, the whole nine. We also played a five+ hour round. We stopped for lunch, took our time between shots. The kind of stuff that ticks you off during regular rounds, but is necessary on days like this. There were ZERO crowds; we saw one foursome about five or six holes behind us. The Pro Shop was great too. Lots of good merchandise to buy and tell your friends about. I've played there a few times, and really look forward to each time. I try to practice and get ready for the types of shots you are going to see. I've broken a hundred, but my score wasn't on the low end of the radio station dial. If you live in San Diego, LA, or the Inland Empire, and love to golf, practice up and make a go of it this summer. They always have specials. I think our green fee was $35-50, typically $250. The last time it was an "All you can play" with two-night stay at the La Quinta Resort & Spa. I think I got in close to 60 holes that trip. PGA West is a chance to live and play like a pro, while spending Muni Course Hacker Money. read more

Are family has had a home here for at least 35 years or better . My boys grew up hanging out with dad and ma . This place is beautiful very relaxing . My son and I love to golf my other son has fished 80 percent of the ponds around this golf me a . There all older now and still follow there passions . Not alone though there kids enjoy this area also . At the pool hanging out golfing with grandpa . And now Marshal after Marshal says we can't watch are kids fish the ponds . Granted we live here pay this pay that . Just because we don't have a Golf membership we where told we were Tresspassing . That's BS . So our kids can't enjoy what we did . We catch and release anyway . Have respect for golfers . Stay quite. As the staff of PGA maybe you should reconsider some of your rules . It's really sad . read more

Amazing Course, but completely ridiculous if you don't play often. The first coupe holes had some mysterious rough that if you hit into you'll never find it. The other 14ish holes had rough that was more manageable. All the holes have different layouts which makes you use all your clubs, and lots of water lining entire fairways, or surround greens so for your own sake, layup. I say make sure you have a box of balls, because the rough eats up balls, and if you play in the summer you'll just be too hot to keep looking. read more

Alcatraz!!!!! This course is a widow maker. It will make you gaze in awe, sometimes cheer, and definately cry No!!!!!! But it is so awesome. You have to play it at least once in your life. I have a Birdie, and few pars including Alcatraz - Hole 17, named because it's an island green surrounded by rocks and lots and lots of water. Nothing is better than dropping a shot onto Hole 17. It will seperate the men from the boys. Clubhouse is awesome, and they recently installed what may be the most insane GPS system ever lensed on a course. The Screen is about 13's and is in full HD, and shows you a flyover of the hole when you pull up to your tee box! Worth Every penny! read more

Made a tee time here 3 weeks ago for my friend and I to play. We were going to get there 5 minutes beforehand so I figure I should call the pro shop and tell them the situation . He said " if you don't get there on time you will not be allowed to golf until 1pm( our tee time was a 8.42. " )" so we hurried and got there 6 minutes before tee time. I get to the pro shop and the guy with the same voice said " don't worry there is a frost delay, everything is pushed back by at least 30 minutes ." Couldn't believe it. I had been carrying a sinus infection for 1 week and I really hoped it would be gone but it got worse whilst on the middle part of the front 9. I told my friend that I was done and couldn't play any longer. So I thought a partial refund maybe possible as I was really sick and it was Christmas. The time for good will , but not at PGA west . " sorry sir it's against our policy " . This after waiting in line for 15 minutes. In total 9 holes cost me $400!! Happy Christmas PGA west !! Have a good one. Oh and the course was nice read more

Seriously, how do you give a course a 5-star rating after it ate up almost a dozen balls and you almost shot 20 strokes over your handicap? Because it is that good. Everything you have read in all the reviews here is true. Pete Dye has created a real monster, but a stunningly beautiful one. I played the Combo tees, and thank god I did. God help me if I had gone back to my customary Blue tees. The course is long, the greens are firm and there is more sand on the course than the beach. I am pretty good bunker player, but it gets a bit much when you hit out of the sand about a dozen times and you have just played 7 holes by that time :-). My playing partner made the cardinal mistake of going long and left on #16 - I swear that this guy was probably a 10-handicap, and it took him 4 shots to get out of the bunker. It's not his fault, what does a mere mortal do when you are staring at a 25 foot wall!!! The island green on 17 is talked about but it's just a-ok. Overall, it was one of the best courses I've played. read more

These pros can analyze your swing quickly, and tell you the one or two factors on which to concentrate. They leave you with both written summaries of steps to take, and a memory stick summary of your lesson. My wife and I particularly like John Battaglia. Played here yesterday and another great PGA west course. Coming down the home stretch is where this course really gets tough. I got thru it but be prepared. I was a bit skeptical that a resort course would as hard as this course is advertised to be. If you play from the front (red) tees and can only hit 150 yards, it's not that bad. I played from the blues, and it ate my lunch. 225 yard par 3's with water? Ouch. I think I would have scored better if I used an 8 iron and left the rest of the clubs in my bag all day. I normally play with 1 or 2 balls for a round; I went through about 10 here. If you're accurate but not that long, this course isn't so bad. If you're at all inaccurate, you're going to shoot 15 - 20 strokes over your average. The course is well-maintained and has many stunning holes. If you miss the fairway, you're either on a 30 degree lie or in the water. If you miss the green and avoid the many nasty bunkers, you think you're OK, until you realize that the fescue is so thick that it grabs your wedge and what might have been a good short game turns into duffs, bladed shots, etc. Overall, this is one of the best courses I've ever played. Sure, it is a manufactured experience (vs. a course that is designed into the land, such as Bandon, Pebble, Pasatiempo, etc.). But they manufactured a heck of a nice course. If you can't afford the 8am greens fee in the spring, try to play twilight via some of the web golf aggregators like standby golf or golfnow. read more

I think Jack is a skier when he's not golfing cuz there's enough moguls here for an Olympic downhill! That said, course is very well manicured and challenging enough, yet very rewarding for good shots. If you're off here you will have a difficult day. Bring gnat spray if you have an early tee time. They're brutal! Rough is a killer. Greens true. Sand traps are plenty but very nice to hit out of (expert at rating sand traps). One word of advise: listen to the starter when he tells you to club up to reach the green. There is NOTHING behind almost every green that could hurt you. Fall short and it will be a LONG day. Oh, and don't let the asshole guys that live there and drive in behind you and onto the 12th tee box in their Bentley and Mercedes golf carts push you. Sure you guys paid. read more

What a test. Jack Nicklaus is mean, elevated greens, valleys along the sides of the holes and fairway, and huge diabolical bunkers that you may as well hit backwards to get out of. Nonetheless it was a picturesque course and in excellent shape. Bring an few extra balls, as I lost a couple to water and backyards. Beautiful course, but too tough for your average golfer. My dad and I teed it up with two other friends last weekend. The rough was exceptionally high and resulted in many lost balls. Keep in mind you are going to lose your fair share of balls anyway, since water hazards factor prominently on about half the holes. But to hit a decent drive two yards off the fairway and be unable to find your ball because of ankle high rough just seems unfair. All in all, the 4 of us shot 97, 100, 106 and 118. Our handicaps were 15, 10, 17 and 18 respectively. If you are accurate off the tee, you will probably love this course and I have to admit the scenery is quite beautiful. But if you are an average golfer, you will probably spend most of your round in complete misery and your most enjoyable moments will be drinking beer in the restaurant afterwards and joking about how you will never be coming back. read more

Great course. Yes very challenging, seems like fairways are protected by bunkers and greens are protected by water and bunkers so your A game may not be enough. The driving range, chipping green, practice green was very big and nice with free range balls included. The restaurant/19 hole is the best I've ever been to. It's used for stadium course/Nicholas tournament. We watched Monday night football while sitting out on the patio watching # 9 and #18 greens of the Nicholas course. Completely overpriced. There are sand traps everywhere so it is challenging, but for the price, I expected so much more. The fairways and greens were no much better than most municipal courses and I would even say many holes were worse. There's like 2-3 scenic holes, but the rest are crap. Took a lesson with Josh....WOW!!! After filming your swing, together with Josh's analysis,he put me on track to defeat my biggest failure in MY swing.Then after working on it for approx. 30 minutes he filmed me again.Clearly,decidedly better than before.Then they allow you to go to the range and hit until your through.For me it was approx .4 hrs. (all part of the lesson)!! The next day I took it to the course and played the best I ever have(I've been playing over 20 years)! It is the best investment I have EVER made in my golf game and at 51 years old I feel as if my best golf is in front of me!! Thanks again Josh(Myers)!! read more

Play there during the summers. Great course in good condition. I like not having blind shots and knowing where I am going, but that wont help you! lots of drop offs around fairways and greens so you better have a good short game, no a Great short game! always in great shape even in July! read more
